To Dr. Mayes: in your next book, the advanced one a reviewer speaks about, could you give more explanations in general on the financial concepts. Otherwise, keep using this great tool, Excel, or even Access 2000. I refer you to "Building Accounting Systems using Access 97" by James T. Perry, et al. I would think that you could use Access 2000 to apply financial analysis if Access is better suited than Excel, which I am not so sure; although Mr. Perry seems to give quite convincing arguments in favour of using Access instead of Excel.
Thanks for your book that I really liked. I am now up-to-date with Excel and I am keen to learn more about Finance. Thanks to you :-)

Summary of George Washington Carver.......2003-10-02
He had a strong interest in the plant life, and was always going in the woods when he was growing up.
He worked his way through high school and college.
Although he was faced with many struggles, racial problems, and disapppointments, he always maintained his focus on his dreams.
In 1896, George was offered a teaching job from Booker T. Washington, who was the principal of Tuskegee Institute in Birmingham, AL.
He accepted the position, and was assigned several responsibilities. One of the assignments was director of the school agricultural experiment station.
One of Carver's greatest concerns was to help improve the well being of other blacks.
He had strong Christian beliefs and always included God in his work.
George became well known for his several creative ways for finding use for the peanut, sweet potato, and other crops.
He received several awards, one of which was the Springharn Medal in 1923. In 1935, George was selected to the collaborator to the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Mycology and Plant Disease Survey.
He pursued his lab and fieldwork the same way he embraced man and nature; with wonder and affection.

The Moment of Proof: Mathematical Epiphanies
Donald C. Benson Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0195139194 |
Amazon.com
The world described by mathematics might seem strange and daunting, but it is our world nonetheless. If you've ever experienced the pleasure of a sudden flash of mathematical insight--even while balancing your checkbook--then you know how miraculous a few digits and an equal sign can become at just the right time. Mathematician Donald C. Benson is intimately familiar with this phenomenon, and he has written The Moment of Proof: Mathematical Epiphanies to remind us that math can be as much fun as mountain climbing (and, of course, just as challenging). Part textbook, part puzzle book, it rewards our hard work with a steady flow of wide-eyed moments of clarity as we see how simple and elegant even the most frightening problem can be.Benson covers classic problems like the sliding-tile and birthday-matching puzzles, but also delves into abstractions: counting, sorting, and "interesting numbers" all jump into his spotlight. This is fascinating enough, but his explanations of Russian peasant math and the secrets of the abacus have just the right mix of concreteness and abstraction to please anyone but the terminally mathphobic. Benson does expect quite a bit from his readers; paper and pencil are essential for complete understanding. But with each new epiphany, each new glimpse into the workings of the world, the effort invested in The Moment of Proof is returned, with interest. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
When Archimedes, while bathing, suddenly hit upon the principle of buoyancy, he ran wildly through the streets of Syracuse, stark naked, crying "eureka!" In The Moment of Proof, Donald Benson attempts to convey to general readers the feeling of eureka--the joy of discovery--that mathematicians feel when they first encounter an elegant proof. This is not an introduction to mathematics so much as an introduction to the pleasures of mathematical thinking. And indeed the delights of this book are many and varied. The book is packed with intriguing conundrums--Loyd's Fifteen Puzzle, the Petersburg Paradox, the Chaos Game, the Monty Hall Problem, the Prisoners' Dilemma--as well as many mathematical curiosities. We learn how to perform the arithmetical proof called "casting out nines" and are introduced to Russian peasant multiplication, a bizarre way to multiply numbers that actually works. The book shows us how to calculate the number of ways a chef can combine ten or fewer spices to flavor his soup (1,024) and how many people we would have to gather in a room to have a 50-50 chance of two having the same birthday (23 people). But most important, Benson takes us step by step through these many mathematical wonders, so that we arrive at the solution much the way a working scientist would--and with much the same feeling of surprise. Every fan of mathematical puzzles will be enthralled by The Moment of Proof. Indeed, anyone interested in mathematics or in scientific discovery in general will want to own this book.Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2006-04-02
Very few epiphanies make for a disappointment.......2003-01-05
Good for Laymen.......2002-11-07
Delivers on the promise of the title.......2001-11-28
My definition of the joy of mathematics:
You have a few facts, awkwardly arrayed. You have some idea of a new fact you think might be a logical consequence of those facts. You start finding ways of stating them more interestingly. This may lead you to defining new composite concepts. You play around with them for a while. Sometimes you have to throw them out and start over. Often if you are brilliant, once in a great while if you are me, things start falling into place rather elegantly. Then you finally discover a snappy way of articulating all the pieces of a problem and the proof pops out.
And it feels amazing.
This book allows people like me, who wish they could have these moments more often, to live them vicariously through the great selection of theorems and demonstrations Donald Benson has put together. I didn't find this book particularly hard to read. In fact, I often read it while walking -- wishing I had a chalkboard, admittedly. It is written for laypersons who are not afraid to spend quite a bit of time on a page: all the knowledge you need is there, but seeing how it fits together to produce a given result can take some effort. The proofs are all some combination of elegant, surprising, and subtle, and always cause a few minutes of ecstasy.
Too serious.......2001-06-26

Arthur James Balfour, 1848-1930: Historiography and Annotated Bibliography (Bibliographies of British Statesmen)
Eugene L. Rasor Manufacturer: Greenwood Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0313288771 |
Book Description
A world-renowned British stateman, Arthur James Balfour is best known as Prime Minister and signer of the Balfour Declaration, calling for a national home for Jews in Palestine. Less well known are his initiatives in creating a structure for strategic planning, preparation for, and fighting a war, the Committee of Imperial Defence, and chairing the committee which articulated the basis for the constitution of the British Commonwealth of Nations. This book provides the most extensive survey of the literature by and about Balfour. The first section of the book, a historiographical narrative, surveys the important literature, integrating historical and biographical events, criticisms, evaluations, and observations of reviewers along with those of the writer. It surveys books, monographs, official histories, government publications, memoirs, diaries, dissertations, bibliographies, pertinent articles from journals, collections of unpublished papers, manuscript collections, and archival and research holdings. The second section provides an annotated bibliography of the 500 items discussed in the historiographical narrative.

Great book for high school teachers and the popular audience.......2002-11-17
In chapter 1, the author attempts to give an intuitive definition of topology. The author uses various pictures and handwaving arguments to explain various notions in topology, such as homeomorphism ("coffee cup = donut"), simply connected (object with no holes), homology (two circles can intersect at one point only), Jordan curves, and Euler's theorem.
In chapter 2, the author uses paper models to illustrate the topology of surfaces, both orientable and nonorientable. The author gives instructions on how to make a paper model of a Klein bottle, but cautions the reader that such a model is not an exact representation of the mathematical object rigorously defined in topology, since the surface passes through itself in the paper construction.
Chapter 3 is a set of instructions on how to make a "shortest" Moebius strip. The procedures for doing this are interesting and fun, for the author constructs a Moebius strip whose length is less than its width, by a factor of 1 over the square root of 3. He devotes an appendix for an improvement due to Martin Gardner of Scientific American fame.
In chapter 4 the author constructs what he calls a "conical Moebius strip". The author asks the reader to consider an annulus with a radial slit, with which of course one can construct a Moebius strip by twisting the ends and joining them. But he asks how large the hole must be in relation to the outside diameter. The answer to this is that one does not need any hole at all in order to carry out the construction. In fact, an angular segment can be cut out instead of the radial cut, and this leads him to construct the conical Moebius strip.
The author returns to the Klein bottle in chapter 5, and shows first what happens if the usual construction of the Klein bottle is cut down the center symmetrically: two Moebius strips are obtained. But to construct this model is difficult, so he gives alternate constructions for making the Klein bottle. He then shows what happens to the various models when the pieces are cut.
But how do you make a projective plane using scissors and paper? Intuitively one can imagine this would be very difficult, but the author shows ways to do it in chapter 6. His strategy for making these models is to teach the concept of symmetry in topology, and he pulls this off very well.
The famous 4-color problem for maps, i.e. that one needs only 4 colors for a map, is considered in chapter 7. At the time of publication, the 4-color problem was still open, so the author attempts to try and explain it using various diagrams and subdivisions thereof. The 4-color problem was proved using computer algorithms by the mathematicians K. Appel and W. Haken in 1976.
Network topology is considered in chapter 8, with the famous Koenigsberg bridge problem leading off the discussion. The author also introduces the very important Betti numbers, these having far-reaching ramifications in topology. And interestingly, the author is able, via a consideration of loop-cuts and cross-cuts in paper models of the Klein bottle and projective plane, to introduce the very important concept of "duality". The theory of knots makes its appearance here, although the discussion is very short. The author is well-aware of the difficulties in finding a classification theory of knots, but more could possibly be done here in the lines of the rest of the book to illustrate some of the peculiarities of knots.
Chapter 9 is really fun, for it concerns the torus with a puncture, and how to turn it inside out. The diagrams are helpful and the intuition gained valuable. The mathematician Steven Smale found a way of turning the sphere inside out in the early 1060s, but the author does not tackle Smale's method! This is unfortunate, since it is very difficult to follow the steps in Smale's method, at least for me.
The author does not want to leave the reader with the impression that topology is all scissors, paper, and tape, so he devotes the last two chapters of the book to point-set topology. Concepts such as continuity, limit points, and neighborhoods are discussed. It is quite difficult to explain to beginning readers and students of topology what a neighborhood actually does without having the notion of a metric or distance, but the author does a fairly good job here.
useful but not broad enough.......1998-12-23

Ambient Noise Characteristics During the Sheba Experiment

Product Description
This is a OFFICE OF NAVAL RESEARCH ARLINGTON VA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A686873. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The ambient noise data recorded by two free-drifting buoys during the 1997-98 SHEBA experiment presented a unique opportunity to gauge the noise field of the Arctic Ocean in a unique and changing environment. The two buoys drifted in unison for 12 months, providing an hourly ambient noise data set between 50 and 1000 Hz. The drift pattern was divided into five legs in response to the season or major changes in the direction of ice flow. The two buoys exhibited similar median spectra for all frequencies. When examined on a seasonal basis, summer low frequency ( < 200 Hz) noise levels were much closer to winter noise levels than past studies. This was mainly due to the low number of storms during the winter of 1997-98, which resulted in lower winter median noise levels When compared with previous ambient noise studies in the Beaufort Sea, the SHEBA noise data were consistent with the concept that noise levels decrease (especially in summer) during the years when cyclonic atmospheric circulation dominates the west Arctic. Cross correlation analysis indicated a strong association of wind speed and wind stress to ambient noise. Locally measured wind stress (as opposed to that computed using the geostrophic wind) did not substantially improve the correlation with ambient noise. Two tools to conceptualize the Arctic noise field were employed during the SHEBA experiment: the use of RADARSAT with RGPS and the PIPS computation of energy dissipation rate.

The SESAME I Experiment, Acoustic Data Processing and Catalog
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423581466 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL RESEARCH LAB STENNIS SPACE CENTER MS HIGH FREQUENCY ACOUSTICS SECTION report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A320923. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The first Shelf Edge Study Acoustic Measurement Experiment, SESAME I, was conducted August/September, 1995. The experiment took place at the Malin Shelf (56 deg 33' N, 9 deg 0' W) with the objective of determining the effects of solitary internal waves on acoustic fluctuations at the shelf edge. This paper describes the preliminary analysis of the narrow band continuous wave (CW) acoustic data from the three acoustic legs of the experiment. The acoustic data sets were collected using two Data Acquisition Buoy Systems (DABS), the first deployed in shallow water (170 m) at the shelf edge and the second deployed approximately 6100 m down slope in 500 m of water. Acoustic measurements were made over a frequency band of 100 to 2100 Hz with CW tonals broadcast at 150, 400, 800, and 1600 Hz. The signals were transmitted at source depths of 20, 50, and 100 m at multiple ranges from the array. System calibration analysis revealed both systems had low system noise floors and a flat amplitude response from approximately 125 Hz to 2000 Hz for all channels. The shallow-water DABS system had two hydrophones with an amplitude offset; calibration values applied to the data correct for these offsets. System calibrations have been applied to the acoustic results to produce transmission loss values versus source receiver range. Received levels were highest from the 500 m source depth at all frequencies and at both array locations. Both the 20 m and 100 m source depths often had very low signal to noise ratios, limiting the amount of reliable TL data.
