Product Innovation Strategy, Pure and Simple: How Winning Companies Outpace Their Competitors
by Michel Robert

This book is now superceded by the author's 'STRATEGIC PRODUCT INNOVATION, PURE & SIMPLE: CREATING NEW-TO-THE-MARKET PRODUCTS THAT BREED COMPETITIVE SUPREMACY', although the intellectual contents remain intact as well as unchanged. The latter is apparently published by the author's own consulting company, Decision Processes International.

The principal theme of this book, just like that of the new book, is making innovation a learnable & repeatable disciplined business practice.

In this respect, the author has done a remarkable job.

When it comes to understanding and explaining why some companies develop and launch new products better than their competitors, Mike Robert has no equal. In preparing to help overhaul the strategic planning process at a major publishing firm, we read countless books on strategic planning before choosing Mike's "Strategy, Pure and Simple" as our guide. We couldn't have made a better choice. Mike's tell-it-like-it-is style and clearly defined process served as a guide through numerous planning sessions. Four years later, I find myself consulting for a major insurance and annuity provider who's seeking to establish a disciplined new product development process. The book we're using as our guide? Mike Robert's "Product Innovation Strategy, Pure and Simple". I wouldn't have it any other way. If you're considering improving your company's strategic planning and new product development processes, I highly recommend both of Mike Robert's recent works (unless, of course, you're competing with the company I'm currently working with.

Nothing has so altered the investment landscape in the past five years as the Internet and the CNBC network. The availability of real-time financial news, data and analysis, and instant order entry and execution have empowered investors and democratized financial markets. Barbara Rockefeller's CNBC 24/7 Trading is a primer for what's fast approaching--a trading day that never ends, where at least 500 international stocks can be bought or sold electronically anytime, anywhere.

The book's main theme is the importance of including foreign stocks in a portfolio to lower risk and increase returns. Current portfolio-management theory, or "modern portfolio theory," holds that foreign stocks have historically outperformed American stocks and tend to move up and down at different times, as well. Thus, a portfolio that includes both is not only less risky but also likely to perform better over time. The point of optimum diversification, the "efficient frontier," is where the greatest returns are achieved with the least risk. They make the case that to not diversify is to actually take a bigger risk. In fact, today more money is invested and managed according to the tenets of modern portfolio theory than by any other method. Yet, missing in this book is any discussion about the impact of an increasingly wired world on stock volatility everywhere, and especially on the "noncorrelation" between U.S. and foreign stocks, on which modern portfolio theory is predicated. Recall how quickly the Asian financial crisis spread to Brazil and then to Russia just a couple of years ago. In the near future, events may well impact all stocks globally in the same way at the same time.

The book explains well the many risks in buying foreign securities. There's currency risk; country-specific economic and political risks; foreign-market, liquidity, broker, and back-office risk; foreign-company operational risk; and accounting standards that are anything but standard. What's more, it's harder, at least for now, to get timely and accurate news and financial data from overseas. The book does cover several theoretically safer methods of investing abroad, including American Depositary Receipts, iShares (foreign index shares), and open- and closed-end funds. And there are sections on the basics of foreign exchange and even charting for beginners.

Investors interested in taking a financial worldview will find here all the reasons they should--and plenty of things to worry about if they do. --Scott Harrison

5 out of 5 stars Excellent explanation with lots of research leads.......2001-06-05

This book is an excellent addition to a collection of a small investor who wants to learn about the benefits of international investing. However, it is also a great reading for somebody who is just starting in the field of Finance. It explains basic concepts very carefully, so that a good base is established for further explanations. Yes, to a certain point it concentrates more on non-U.S. markets, but I believe this is only because U.S. market information is readily available to us every day. The book is very well written and deserves a full five-star rating.

2 out of 5 stars Misleading.......2001-05-05

Whereas this book definitely has its good points, the title is quite misleading. As a matter of fact its focus is quite limited mostly to foriegn markets and evaluating these investments combined with trends within the many international markets. On a general level this is discussed fairly well but the details are explained in a matter where it is assumed that you have taken a good number of economics classes. In addition, the different chapters seem to touch back to the same point that when investing overseas you have to look at not only the stock market but the state of affairs within the country both ethically and economically. You must be a good follower of the currency markets as well. This is not easy for most investors to understand on an in depth basis which is needed to trade overseas.

What is also annoying besides the constant redundancy of this book, is the matter in which the author sites references and website addresses for more information. The author must have included at least fifty if not a hundred sites that support each single example. What would have helped the overall presentation of this book, if the author included a list of helpful web sites to locate key information at the end of the book rather than interspersed within his blah blah blah commentary.

There is some useful information in this book and one who likes to explore new web sites might find more value here. However CNBC could have made this book reach a wider audience by organizing this book in a more easy to read manner. Therefore a 2 1/2 star rating fits the bill.

3 out of 5 stars Thrill-o-minute romp it isn't..........2001-02-03

Although Barbara Rockefeller's attention to detail and obvious knowledge of the inside world of the life of a stock trader are quite phenomenal, I found the story lacking direction, and the climax weak. The characters of George Soros and Abby Joseph Cohen, for example, are minimally developed at best, and unnecessarily verbose at times. But Rockefeller has most certainly done her homework in terms of setting the stage for her story, an example that more contemporary writers should heed. All in all, however, this was a quite satisfying read!

5 out of 5 stars A Useful Tool.......2001-01-24

Barbara's book is a much needed addition to the trader's library. As currency, bonds, and stock index futures are now traded around the clock, the need for more information on how to deal with this fast-paced environment is much needed. Barbara's real expertise is in the currency sector and the information in the currency chapter alone is well worth the price of the book. As a CTA and investment advisor, I find Barbara's information highly useful and would highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fair warning.......2000-12-20

A recent amazon.com reviewer states incorrectly that Barbara Rockefeller's 24/7 Trading fails to note that the increasingly wired world raises volatility and affects the correlations among global stocks because this is one of the main points in the book. To wit: "...the developed world is so wired together these days that a drop in the Dow and the Nasdaq is often followed by an equivalent drop in the Nikkei (225 (Japan), DAX (Germany), CAC (France), DTSE 100 (UK) and other major indices." (p.187) She continues, saying that the benefits of international diversification may be exaggerated because a bear market in the United States contaminates other markets, at least in developed countries.

Note please some additional points on this topic. One is that the author advises that many portfolio diversification exercises use only classes of securities, rather than the securities themselves, which she describes as a sub-optimal practice because the same class of securities can contain a highly volatile security as well as a `placid' security.

The second point is that the author could have gone a lot farther in criticizing financial planners who create "optimal" portfolios for customers that are nothing of the sort. She perhaps should have warned much more strongly about paying an advisor to create an optimal portfolio. You will not always get what you think you paid for.

Finally, Rockefeller says clearly that no website today will give you the correlation of any two securities easily. You have to do it yourself, if you can get the data. Data on foreign stocks is hard to get, and, often, is not free; and, useful websites come and go, all of which the author acknowledges.

Why should US investors care are about non-US stocks? Because the new US administration is western states-oriented, investors should be prepared for future US dollar weakness that will presumably favor western states' exporters of commodities - grain, oil, beef and timber. With US dollar weakness, non-US stock will presumably appreciate in price versus US stocks. This means that savvy investors should be taking far closer looks at non-US stocks in the next four years than they have been taking in the last four. For serious investors, 24/7 Trading could not have come at a better time. Reading it is fair warning for the future.

5 out of 5 stars Enfoque entretenido para abordar materia complejas.......1999-07-10

                      Book Description

This work is the first explicit examination of the key role that mathematics has played in the development of theoretical physics and will undoubtedly challenge the more conventional accounts of its historical development. Although mathematics has long been regarded as the "language" of physics, the connections between these independent disciplines have been far more complex and intimate than previous narratives have shown. This study encompasses engagements across discipline boundaries and many nations rom the ear of Euler and Bernoulli o that of Hilbert and Einstein. At all times physicists and mathematicians retained their distinct sets of disciplinary standards and goals. Interactions within historical ears are handled using the standards of the time to define mathematics and physics. In this context, the works of Lagrange, Laplace, Fourier, Jacobi, William Thomson, Maxwell, Helmholtz, and many others are discussed, and by 1870, it is evident that the essentials of modern theoretical physics are in place. The epilogue, spanning the decades from 1870 to the First World War, deals with the decline of these interactions and the building of new connections. It is particularly significant that these new patterns of interactions became paradigmatic for the rest of the twentieth century. The unique perspectives concerning the history of theoretical physics will undoubtedly cause some raised eyebrows, as the author convincingly demonstrates that practices, methods, and language shaped the development of the field, and are a key to understanding the mergence of the modern academic discipline. Mathematicians and physicists, as well as historians of both disciplines, will find this provocative work of great interest.

                        Book Description

Twilight is the story of a lady who is banished from Versailles by the king. She tries to make the best of living on her country estate, but although she entertains lovers and friends from Paris, she comes to find it intolerable. Life at court was the only thing that gave her existence meaning, and she moves inexorably towards suicide. n Moonbeam Alley, a traveller delayed in a French port explores the sailors' quarter. Enticed by a voice singing an aria, he learns the story of those who run it and frequent it: a tale of violence, passion, and a marriage that is no true marriage.

                          Book Description

The Human Genome Diversity Project tells us that between 15,000 and 30,000 years ago people from Mongolia crossed Beringia to what we now call the Americas. U.S. Immigration and Migration chronicles and interprets the phenomenal waves of immigration to the United States from the earliest times through the period from 1820 to 1930, when the United States was the destination of some 60% of the world's immigrants -- up to the present day, when restrictive policies have temporarily stanched the flow of immigrants.

Features include 300 black-and-white illustrations, including about 10 maps; chronology; sidebars; words to know; research and activity ideas; further reading; and a subject index. The Almanac volumes tell of the economic, religious and political forces that compelled people to seek a better life in a new land. These same forces later inspired the migration of many Americans to other areas in mass movements such as the Westward Expansion; the rural to urban migration; the Great Migration of blacks in the early part of the 20th century; and the migration to the Sunbelt starting in the 1960s. The Biographies volumes bring the panorama of immigration and migration to a personal level by profiling both prominent and less well-known people of the immigrant experience. Insights into the movement of people are provided in the Primary Sources volume via excerpts from such key documents as the Maryland Toleration Act (1649), the Treaty of Fort Stanwix (1784), the Homestead Act (1862), the Chinese Exclusion Act (1882), and the Immigration Act (1924), as well as personal observations from two Mexican immigrants and concerns about the rise in U.S. immigration from conservative talk-show host Patrick J. Buchanan.

In Slave in a Box, M.M. Manring investigates why the troubling figure of Aunt Jemima has endured in American culture. The author traces the evolution of the mammy from her roots in Old South slave reality and mythology, through reinterpretations during Reconstruction and in minstrel shows and turn-of-the-century advertisements, to Aunt Jemima's symbolic role in the Civil Rights movement and her present incarnation as a "working grandmother." The reader learns how advertising entrepreneur James Webb Young, aided by celebrated illustrator N.C. Wyeth, skillfully tapped into nostalgic 1920s perceptions of the South as a culture of white leisure and black labor. Aunt Jemima's ready-mixed products offered middle-class housewives the next best thing to a black servant: a "slave in a box" that conjured up romantic images of not only the food but also the social hierarchy of the plantation South.

4 out of 5 stars Using this book to teach business history.......2003-10-16

Slave in a Box is a great study of the racism and sexism embodied in the birth of advertising. It is not only provocative but also chock full of great facts about the era--from the importance of paper bags in marketing to the story of an African American who actually wrote for minstrel shows. I am writing because I am a historian and used the book in my Industrialization of America class. The class generally hated it, because it is so detailed, but despite their response I recommend using it in a course. Our discussion was painful--black students said the book was "depressing" and white students denied that race had anything to do with the power of this trade name (they harped on the convenience, as if the stereotype was irrelevant!). I learned so much about them and so much about what we all need to do as teachers that I think it was a very valuable experience.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!.......2000-04-06

Very often, histories/studies of Aunt Jemima and the mammy stereotype are simply descriptive; this book does a great job of showing how Aunt Jemima's image and products were designed to complement/support ideal white femininity. My only criticism is that Aunt Jemima's presence on television and radio wasn't discussed enough. A great read for anyone interested in issues of race, gender and domesticity. I have recommended this book to many people, and continue to do so.

5 out of 5 stars absorbing, thorough, and highly readable.......1998-11-12

Prof. Manring has accomplished something rare: an academic book free of jargon, a cultural history free of polemic, and a thorough analysis that never drags. She writes clear, lively prose -- this is a book for the general reader as well as the student of American history. Brava!

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking. Well written........1998-09-02

This book and its contextualization of Aunt Jemima or the mammy stereotype, as I refer to it, is well-written and thought-provoking. The material has been very helpful to me in exploring how this particular stereotype of black women functions in American culture and I will be using it as a key reference in my dissertation. Thanks.
