Download Description
The transition economies of the Europe and Central Asia Region faced unprecedented political, economic, and social change after the break-up of the Soviet Union. With assistance from the World Bank and other donors, many countries quickly accomplished a number of reforms, but progress in others has been slower. Much has been achieved--the private share of GDP in the transition countries is nearly 70 percent, and 8 countries have joined the EU--but much remains to be completed. Economies in Transition assesses the effectiveness of Bank assistance to the transition, focusing particularly on five topics: 1) private sector development; 2) governance, public sector management, and institution-building; 3) the financial sector; 4) social protection; and 5) energy. Overall Bank assistance has been successful, but there were mistakes before the true nature of transition was fully understood. The Bank internalized the emerging lessons and shifted its emphasis accordingly. This study highlights the importance of lending at prudent levels until a solid knowledge base is established, with convincing evidence of government and societal ownership of the assistance program. It contends that analysis of governance and poverty monitoring should be early features of the assistance program, active programs of stakeholder inclusion should be widely replicated, and country assistance strategies used to bolster reform capacity.

Customer Reviews:
this book was disappointing.......1999-07-05
If you're looking for something practical, this book is not for you. Cathie spends most of his time relating different "harmonics" to each other without ever taking the time to explain the significance of the numbers or of the way he manipulates them. The book was interesting, no doubts there. But if you want information you can use in experiments of your own, then search elsewhere. This one is pure theory.

Book Description
The structure of a growth or an etch front on a surface is not only a subject of great interest from the practical point of view but also is of fundamental scientific interest. Very often surfaces are created under non-equilibrium conditions such that the morphology is not always smooth.
In addition to a detailed description of the characteristics of random rough surfaces,
Experimental Methods in the Physical Sciences, Volume 37, Characterization of Amorphous and Crystalline Rough Surface-Principles and Applications will focus on the basic principles of real and diffraction techniques for quantitative characterization of the rough surfaces. The book thus includes the latest development on the characterization and measurements of a wide variety of rough surfaces. The complementary nature of the real space and diffraction techniques is fully displayed.
Key Features
* An accessible description of quantitative characterization of random rough surfaces and growth/etch fronts
* A detailed description of the principles, experimentation, and limitations of advanced real-space imaging techniques (such as atomic force microscopy) and diffraction techniques (such as light scattering, X-ray diffraction, and electron diffraction)
* Characterization of a variety of rough surfaces (e.g., self-affine, mounded, anisotropic, and two-level surfaces) accompanied by quantitative examples to illustrate the essence of the principles
* An insightful description of how rough surfaces are formed
* Presentation of the most recent examples of the applications of rough surfaces in various areas

Particle characterization is an important component in product research and development, manufacture, and quality control of particulate materials and an important tool in the frontier of sciences, such as in biotechnology and nanotechnology. This book systematically describes one major branch of modern particle characterization technology - the light scattering methods. This is the first monograph in particle science and technology covering the principles, instrumentation, data interpretation, applications, and latest experimental development in laser diffraction, optical particle counting, photon correlation spectroscopy, and electrophoretic light scattering.
In addition, a summary of all major particle sizing and other characterization methods, basic statistics and sample preparation techniques used in particle characterization, as well as almost 500 latest references are provided.
The book is a must for industrial users of light scattering techniques characterizing a variety of particulate systems and for undergraduate or graduate students who want to learn how to use light scattering to study particular materials, in chemical engineering, material sciences, physical chemistry and other related fields.
Customer Reviews:
Very Impressive and Easy to Understand.......2001-01-02
I was impressed how this book started. I was expecting a very technical, hard to read and hard to understand book from the start. Much to my suprise, it was very simple to grasp the concept of Light Scattering with this book. I have read it over the course of 2 months and found that this book is usable by all levels of readers. It can make light scattering methods simple to understand and it can also satisfy the more advanced reader with the technical insight they require. It is a new book and has all the latest methods being used in industry. I am not sure who this author is, but his ability to make this VERY technical information simple to understand and still make a book robust in advanced technical detail makes him one good author to look out for.
I highly recommend as a great reference book.

Description:
Because porosity can affect a wide range of performance attributes in vessels, its measurement has become an important component of ceramic technological studies. To measure ceramic porosity, archaeologists have borrowed well-established methods from the material sciences. However, these methods can have drawbacks for archaeological applications including the potential to damage archaeological residues contained within the sherd, the need for expensive equipment, and/or the use of hazardous materials. In this paper we introduce a new, non-destructive method for measuring porosity based on the infusion of liquid nitrogen into the sherd. A comparison of results obtained from this method with those obtained from other approaches indicates that the technique produces reliable results.

Wilderness and Razor Wire
ASIN: 0816523568 |
Book Description
A teacher and family man incarcerated in Arizona State Prison--the result of a transgression that would cost him a dozen years of his life--Ken Lamberton can see beyond his desert walls. In essays that focus on the natural history of the region and on his own personal experiences with desert places, the author of the Burroughs Medal-winning book Wilderness and Razor Wire takes readers along as he revisits the Southwest he knew when he was free, and as he makes an inner journey toward self-awareness.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent essays.......2005-03-31
The power of Ken Lamberton's "Beyond Desert Walls: Essays from Prison" comes from its amazing, unflinching honesty joined with elegant writing - a combination that, for me, is irresistible in personal essay or memoir. A Teacher of the Year in the 1980s, Lamberton later spent a dozen years in prison for an offense even he describes as despicable. Yet it was in prison that he found himself and honed his writing skills. His first book of essays, "Wilderness and Razor Wire," won the 2002 John Burroughs Medal for outstanding nature writing; written while he was incarcerated, it eloquently describes the little bits of nature available to him within an Arizona prison and how they saved him.
While "Beyond Desert Walls" is also about nature (specifically the Sonoran Desert of southeastern Arizona), it is more about Lamberton himself and how he got into the predicament that put him behind bars. Describing this over the course of several essays is where his honesty really comes to the fore. It's also about his wife, Karen, and her stubborn determination to stick by him - she even became a paralegal to assist with his case - and how she believed, as he wrote, that he was "worth salvaging." And it's about Lamberton's belief in himself as he creates a new, more introspective and truthful life as a faithful husband, devoted father, and freelance writer.
In my opinion, Lamberton does for prose what another remarkable ex-convict, Jimmy Santiago Baca, does for poetry.
