With more than two million books in print, Elain St. James's Simplify series has taught readers to cut back on what's not important and enjoy more of what matters. She has helped readers simplify their lives, their inner selves, their holidays, and their lives with kids. Now in her new book, Simplify Your Work Life, St. James offers advice on simplifying time spent at work. Taken from that book, this calendar offers daily guidance on learning to seize time, being more productive, being more effective with people, being more efficient with money, changing the way one works, and changing the way one thinks about work. She also highlights high-tech "conveniences," such as the cell phone, e-mail, fax machine, and time management systems, and helps readers understand the difference between making work easier and making it easier to do more work. With helpful, easy, and smart suggestions, this calendar encourages readers to make work fulfilling and challenging without letting it take over their lives.

Seidman uses the above quote in the chapter where he apportions blame for the S&L fiasco. This book contains a lot of entertaining passages, and considering it is a book about finance written by an accountant, that in itself makes the book unusual.

I found the book to be well written, and very up-front about the authors biases. It was refreshing that the hidden agenda was right out in the open for everyone to inspect, just the way the author maintains that good government should operate. As Seidman states in his introduction:

"Why write about these experiences?" Of course, I share the goals of most memoirists: to immortalize my contribution to society; even scores with my enemies; provide financial security for my old age, confirm the taxpayers worst suspicions about their government; and generally leave a record of my adventures for the benefit of future historians".

                Book Description

This volume focuses on issues of plant pathology and sustainability, such as short term economic plans versus long term economic visions in farming and forestry. The book also deals with the complex biological interactions governing success in minimizing pest or pathogen damage by biological or chemical strategies, benefits and costs to the producer, consequences for the environment of management options, and the challenge of defining useful farm or forest indicatorsof sustainable practices.

                Book Description

An indispensable book for all professionals and students interested in the field of geoarchaeology, including those with limited earth-science experience, this new edition of Geoarchaeology builds on the success and innovation of the first edition and includes updates, new concepts and examples, an enhanced bibliography, and many new illustrations. The second edition begins by considering the history and theory of geoarchaeology. Rapp and Hill then move to discussions of soils and environmental interpretations; initial context and site formation; methods of discovery and spatial analyses; estimating time; paleoenvironments, landscapes, and the human past; identifying, analyzing, and sourcing raw materials; and construction, destruction, and conservation of sites and materials.
"[This book] covers a wide range of topics . . . with clarity and balance. . . . [The] chapters are all well written and have concise introductory discussions that are not too detailed and not too brief. . . . Beautifully produced."—Michael Waters, Geoarchaeology: An International Journal (on the first edition)

4 out of 5 stars Great read but could use more photos to illustrate concepts.......2007-04-24

This is a superb volume. It`s interesting to read, well organized, gives a broad overview of the field, and presents illustrations of how geologists are able to contribute meaningfully to our understanding of the human past.

The authors cover a broad range of subjects, including the development of the consiliance (Wilson would be proud) between archaeology and geology, that is between what might be seen as basically a "social science" and a so-called "hard science." They discuss some of the background of both disciplines, which really arose as official fields of endeavor in the 19th century, although both have significant roots in the 17th and 18th centuries. (Thomas Jefferson in the 18th century comes to mind as do Steno and Hutton).

The subject of petrology---igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic---and how it contributes to an understanding of the stratigraphy of a site is very informative. The particular character of the paleoenvironment that encouraged humans to occupy a site in the first place is also very illuminating. The authors also point out the contributions of paleoclimatology, palynology, zooarchaology, fluvial systems, and other types of earth history studies that help give the reader a clearer understanding of the pre-historic and ancient historic worlds.

What I found particularly interesting was their discussions of the effects of upstream erosive processes on various segments of rivers, since these are still actions in force today. The human effects on terrain become very obvious here. While the data were drawn mostly from the rivers in the United Kingdom, some material on German and French rivers and on the US Mississippi are also included. The effects of the earthquakes of 1812-1813 in New Madrid, Missouri on the Mississippi were especially amazing. (An interesting discussion of this particular event is found in When the Mississippi Ran Backwards : Empire, Intrigue, Murder, and the New Madrid Earthquakes.

Information on conservation of sites provides a much clearer understanding of the problems involved in preserving a site once it has been found and its material remains exhumed. They discuss water-logged material, bog material, and modern day environmental effects on site preservation. A description of the leaning tower of Pisa and its issues was especially illustrative, since it reveals the effects of substrate on ancient buildings. Their presentation of geological data on Maya temples and the karstic substrate on which they are built made more sense of their abandonment than many other theories. The effect of site choice without an adequate understanding the effects of substrate are particularly obvious in their mention of a modern building in Mexico which has sunk several feet because of the "built" land underlying it.

Like the book Alluvial Geoarchaeology: Floodplain Archaeology and Environmental Change (Cambridge Manuals in Archaeology), which I also read and reviewed, this one relies heavily on schematic illustrations to clarify concepts. While these put the basic ideas across, they do not really provide a very clear understanding of what the worker is likely to find in the field. Here too, I would suggest more photos of sites that illustrate what is being discussed, so that beginning geoarchaeologist or archaeologist has a better handle on what to expect. Seismic features, discontinuities, unconformitities, fining up and fining down, the different soil horizons and the types found in different climates need more than a diagram for the novice to really grasp some of these features as they are commonly seen in the field. I suspect a field trip with this in mind would be very useful.

I would recommend this book to any beginning earth history, archeology, or basic geology class, certainly as a reading list entry. Brown's book is a more depthy discussion specifically of fluvial systems and is a little more difficult to stick to, but since many sites, especially prehistoric sites, are buried by river deposition and revealed by aggradation, an understanding of the behavior of rivers and their effect on archaeological sites and materials is especially useful. I would suggest that the two books be read together. Certainly they reinforce and augment one another.

A great read, but it could have used more photos.

5 out of 5 stars The "other" five stars book on Geoarchaeology.......2006-10-20

I have previously reviewed the book "Practical and Theoretical Geoarchaeology" by Goldberg and Macphail and I've given it 5 stars. This one is anoother five-stars book on geoarchaeology, especially since this second edition has been considerably expanded by about 80 pages.

The two books are both excelent, but they possess diferent strenghts: Goldberg&Macphail's book relies heavily on landscapes, sediments, soils, stratigraphy, soil chemistry and especially soil micromorphology; it also is excelent due to coverage of field and laboratory methods.

Although this focus is excelent (the book covers these topics extensively) it lets out a lot of other topics; for example, environmental studies in a archaeological context are left out (the authors consider it a separate field of study done by a separate team), and so are Archaeometric studies which the authors also consider to be out of the field of Geoarchaeology (they dedicate a chapter to some archaeometric studies, but the coverage is not only incomplete but the information is also very sparse).

On the other hand, Rapp's book, although beying relatively brief in coverage of the multiple topics does cover everything that the geosciences can contribute to Archaeology, from the same topics covered by Goldberg&Macphail's book, to environmental studies and Archaeometry (like, for example, provenance studies involving trace-element patterns and stable isotopes, etc). Rapp's book is by far the most complete in terms of coverage (especially this second edition) but it is also the most brief and succint; Goldberg&Macphail's book does not cover all the ground Rapp's book covers and leaves a lot out, but on the other side it its coverage of the featured topics is much more comprehensive.

All in all, two execelent books in Geoarchaeology that deserve to be each in the 5 stars pantheon; nevertheless you should be aware of the different strenghts of each one when you make your choice. If you're like me, you'll buy both.

                    Book Description

In 2002, more than three-quarters of a million ambitious high school students took at least one AP exam in hopes of getting a head start on their college career. Peterson's s AP Success: Physics B/C provides complete test preparation for one of the more popular AP exams taken by students during their junior and senior years in high school. This book covers all major test topics--from atoms and compounds to behavior and ecology--that students will encounter on this exam (either the Physics B or Physics C). Detailed reviews of subject principles allow students to fully understand the skills that will help them score well on the test. Peterson's AP Success: Physics includes the features that are the hallmark of Peterson's AP Success series: comprehensive subject review, flexible study planning, user-friendly design geared for the high school student, and answers with comprehensive explanations for all test items.

                    5 out of 5 stars Simply Good.......2002-08-07

This AP prep book is the best ever. I had only two days to study for the physics C exams. I used this book's practice tests, and the questions on the AP exams were very similar to the ones on practice exam. I ended up with a 5 on physics C mechanics, and a 4 on physics C E&M. If I had more time, I would actually go over rest of the book and probably end up with a 5 in E&M. Physics w/ calculus is not an easy subject. Don't expect this book to do the learning for you. But if you work hard and smart, this book will give a you 5.

1 out of 5 stars Use any other study guide.......2002-07-16

I used this book to prepare for the AP Physics exam, and believe me, it didn't help. This gives you the answers to the practice tests, but gives you no indication of where these answers come from, or how to solve the problems. They'll derive equations and not tell you what they're derived from, I had to check with my teacher often to figure out what the book was explaining. I spent months studying for the exam, and this book gave me no advantage over the regular textbook, it only confused me, and made me ask more questions, keeping me off-track for studying the test material. Find yourself ANY other test prep, I doubt there would be two books this bad on the market. If REA has a Physics study guide I'd suggest that--its AP US History study guide was the best test prep I've had yet for any AP Exam.

                      Book Description

Seattle, with its spectacular natural beauty and rough frontier history, has inspired writers from its earliest days. This anthology spans seven decades and includes fiction, memoirs, histories, and journalism that define the city or use it as a setting, imparting the flavor of the city through a literary prism.

Reading Seattle ranges from classics by Horace R. Cayton, Richard Hugo, Betty MacDonald, Mary McCarthy, Murray Morgan, and John Okada to more recent works by Sherman Alexie, Lynda Barry, David Guterson, J. A. Jance, and Jonathan Raban. It includes cutting-edge work by emerging talents and reintroduces works by important Seattle writers who may have been overlooked in recent years.

The writers featured in this volume explore a variety of neighborhoods and districts within the city, delineating urban spaces and painting memorable portraits of characters both historical and fictional.

"No prose anthology, in my view, could be more helpful—to immigrants or lifelong residents—in delivering Seattle's relatively recent but startlingly rich history and diverse literary voices. For those unable to live in or visit this ever-surprising city, Reading Seattle may just be the next best thing."—from the Foreword by Charles Johnson

                              Book Description

This important history documents the religious customs of the crypto-Jewish culture in Spain, Portugal, and their American colonies, principally Mexico, Peru, and Brazil. In coping with clandestineness, crypto-Jews rapidly evolved their own idiosyncratic religion. Its Jewish core was quickly replaced with concepts and practices from the surrounding Catholic culture covered by a veneer of Jewish theology. Included in this award-winning volume are examinations of crypto-Jewish beliefs, superstitions, birth customs, education, marriage and sex, holidays, dietary laws, conversions and death, and burial practices. Secrecy and Deceit provides a comprehensive account of the customs of these secret Jews.

“Secrecy and Deceit provides rare glimpses into a subject that is increasingly fascinating to many different audiences.”—Jane S. Gerber, Director, Institute for Sephardic Studies, CUNY Graduate Center

“Historians and students of comparative and popular religion will be drawing on this work for years.”—Haym Soloveitchik, Yeshiva University

4 out of 5 stars The "Dark Age" of Spanish Jewry.......2000-05-02

The history of Spanish Jews, or Sephardim, stretches back to biblical times. The Jews of Spain and Portugal made formative contributions to all Hispanic cultures, the impact of which is first being measured and recognized today.

The Sephardim experienced a Golden Age in Iberia between 900-1100, during which they acted as the intermediaries between the rival political and cultural worlds of Islam and Christianity. This Golden Age ended with the Reconquest of Spain by Catholic overlords, though for another 300 years the Jews continued to contribute to Iberian life. In 1391 and again in 1492, intense and violent social pressures were put upon the Jews to join the larger Christian community. Many Jews converted, often unwillingly. In 1492 the remaining Jews were exiled from Spain.

The converted Jews (Conversos) became an underclass in Spanish society. Many of them clung tenaciously to Jewish practices in the face of torture and death at the hands of the Inquisition. Having lost contact with other Jews, these people developed a religion which was an admixture of Catholic and Jewish rituals. David Gitlitz examines these practices in detail and attempts to answer the question of whether the Conversos were in fact Jewish.

Gitlitz's research is exhaustive. He has combed through thousands of Inquistion records, showing that a sense of "Jewishness" if not Jewish practice remained a core value of many Spaniards' lives well into the 1700s. Gitlitz is convincing in showing that the Inquisition unwittingly aided crypto-Jews in perpetuating themselves by publishing Edicts of Faith. Essentially checklists for informers, they described the behavior of "Judaizers" (sometimes the practices listed were absurd or simply erroneous). These, ironically, were used by Judaizers as guides to religious behavior. It is revealing that as the Inquisition faded, crypto-Judaism waned, though never totally vanished.

Gitlitz's knowledge and research on the subject is encyclopedic. The book is written in a "textbook" style which makes it somewhat technical and dry, though it is enlivened by excerpts from Inquisition records, which Gitlitz has apparently chosen for their interest, irony, unintended comedy, or spiritedness.

It is difficult to imagine that human beings would face the tortures of the rack for not eating pork. That these same tortured people could summon the will to laugh at their executioners is something wondrous.

Whether they were "Christians," "Jews," or both or neither, SECRECY AND DECEIT is a testament to their spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Science plus Religion: they're not mutually exclusive.......2003-02-21

For a long time we have been told that science and religion are two opposing camps, each offering a competing view of reality, either with science steadily replacing God as new discoveries are made, or with the entrenched defenders of the faith battling against the onslaught of atheism. This warfare mentality is no more evident than in the debate about creation and evolution. Highly vocal advocates on one side or the other would have you believe that you have to choose between your faith and science.

Worlds Apart presents a challenging and welcome alternative to this "either-or" mentality. Drawing upon examples from the history of science and the history of the Church's response to new scientific discoveries, Dr. Giberson argues that science and religion do not offer competing answers to the same questions about reality. Instead, each answers different categories of questions that together offer a much more complete view of reality than either can alone. The conflicts arise only when we try to make the Bible an authority on questions that belong to science, or when we try to make science answer questions that belong in the realm of religion. Creation and evolution should be seen therefore, not as mutually exclusive alternatives, but rather as complementary answers to different sorts of questions.
