Really enjoyed the author's wit and inspirational down to earth comments. Since no one ever educated me on retirement when I was in my 20's, 30's, I'm glad I got a chance to still cash in on maybe SOME DAY...great book.

Not for the average guy.......1999-07-09

While amusing and anecdotal, this book kept a nagging question present in the back of my mind: "why wasn't the title How to Retire as a Personal Injury Lawyer?" How can I know just how accurate the advice is when "early retirement" to this author is admittedly collecting royalties from nine books and when things get tough occasionally suing someone? It's not for a broad spectrum of readers.

This is the first personal finance book that I actually enjoyed reading. The advice was practical, realistic and funny. The author is willing to admit mistakes that he made on the road to early retirement. This book has made me realize that retirement does not have to be a taboo word in my household. I CAN retire early without giving up the home I love, and may even be able to convince my husband that retirement isn't as illusive a dream as we thought.

I never thought anyone could write about how to retire early in an entertaining way. Along with great financial planning advice, the book is filled with anecdotes that make you realize that early retirement is feasible without sacrificing your current lifestyle. I enjoyed the "Seinfeld" and "Dilbert" references that made the advice easier to understand and digest. If you don't want to get up at 6:00 a.m. every morning until you're 65 or older, this is the book to read."

Adam Smith and the Philosophy of Law and Economics is a unique book. Malloy and Evensky bring together a team of international and interdisciplinary scholars to address the work of Adam Smith as it relates to law and economics. In addition to their own contributions, the book includes works by Dr. John W. Cairns of the University of Edinburgh, Dr. J. Ralph Lindgren of Lehigh University, Professor Kenneth A.B. Mackinnon of the University of Waikato, and the Honorable Richard A. Posner of the United States Circuit Court of Appeals. Together these authors bring expertise from the areas of law, philosophy, history, economics, and law and economics to a new study of Adam Smith and his work.
Part One of the book presents new and important observations on Smith's views on community, ethics, the court system, criminal law, and delictual or tort law liability. In this part of the book Smith's work is also examined from the perspective of his use as persuasive authority in the works of modern legal economists. Adam Smith is the best known among economists for his book, The Wealth of Nations, often viewed as the keystone of modern economic thought. Although many practitioners today see the study of Smith as an antiquarian exercise, this book weaves Smith into a constructive critique of modern ecnomic analysis (engaging along the way the work of Nobel Laureates Gary Becker, Amarty Sen, Douglass North, and James Buchanan) and builds bridges between that discourse and the other social sciences.

Evensky(E) has done a great job in covering the major contributions of Adam Smith.He correctly integrates The Theory of Moral Sentiments(TMS,1759;1st edition) with The Wealth of Nations(WN;1776).He shows the importance of Smith's sixth and final edition of TMS in which Smith added a completely new part,Part VI,that dealt with the necessity of promoting morality as a social good that would generate positive externalities to the society as a whole.E correctly shows that Smith viewed government in a positive light and saw that it had to successfully carry out certain functions in order for that society to be prosperous.

My major criticism is that E does not place enough emphasis on the dark side of the Invisible Hand-the undepletable ,detrimental externalities that negatively impact the moral,political,social,martial,and intellectual(as well as limiting the extension of the Invisible Hand by destroying the capability of the work force to make a series of continuous improvements in the machinery that they use in the mass production process)capabilities of the work force as a whole,resulting in "...the almost entire corruption and degeneracy of the great body of the people"(Smith,p.734;Modern Library edition-Cannan) unless government intervenes to prevent or reduce the social damages .E refers to this problem in his footnote 21 on p.13 of his book:"It should be noted that Smith is keenly aware of the potential for technical advancement in production to numb the minds of workers".He returns to the problem again in chapter 9 where he treats the role of government in Smith's system.However,he only spends 1 page discussing how the provision of education(he leaves out the importance of religious instruction and hence misses the reason explaining why Smith added a new Part VI to TMS in 1790. Part VI was required in order to provide the theoretical foundation for his discussions of mass education on pp.716-768 of WN)is viewed .E needed to spend an entire chapter on Smith's careful discussion of all of the negative spillover effects that will result from the operation of the Invisible Hand on pp.734-741.The statement above that it "...numbs the minds..." is an understatement similar to the understatements made by Robert Heilbroner about the "... stultifying effect of mass production..." that would lead to " ...a decline in manly virtues..."(Heilbroner,p.68,The Worldly Philosophers).Smith's much more emphatic characterization and detailed treatment of the actual problem is correct.The problem is much more severe then a decline in manly virtues or numbing of the mind.Every future author on Smith needs to devote one chapter of his book to this actual,not just potential, problem.The failure to deal with it leads directly to Marx's analysis.

The Conquest, published in 1913, is the first of seven novels written by Oscar Micheaux, better known as a prolific pioneer African-American filmmaker. This novel, along with two that followed, The Forged Note in 1915 and The Homesteader in 1917, mirrors Micheaux's experience as a black pioneer of the American West. The son of former slaves, his family had settled in Kansas as a part of the Exoduster movement in the post-Reconstruction era.

Micheaux tells the story of a brave homesteader, Oscar Devereaux, whose dream is to tame 1,000 acres of land and establish himself as an example of success for his people; hence, The Conquest. He secures the land but is overwhelmed by his struggles with drought, loneliness, and a troubled marriage.

Recently "rediscovered" as an important figure in the history of Hollywood filmmaking, Micheaux is being newly appreciated as well for his skills as a novelist. The reissue of The Conquest, including an introduction by Professor Jayna J. Brown, reacquaints us with his work and puts his groundbreaking career in context for a new generation of readers.

oscar micheaux's finest book.......2003-05-29

Oscar Micheaux wrote seven novels. "The Conquest" was his first novel, and his best. If you can only purchase one book BY Oscar Micheaux, this is the best.
Prof. Jayna Brown's introduction is outstanding. Her introduction is tough but fair. The introduction places Oscar Micheaux in his historical context, as a conservative Booker T. Washington follower.
This is the first reprint of "The Conquest" that is not a facsimile copy of the original typeset edition from 1913. As a result, the lettering, font and artwork in the book are modern and elegant.
The book itself is autobiographical. But the book is about more than the struggle of one African-American. The book is also about a whole variety of topics: homesteading, railroading, rural America, and the urban vs. rural divide.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in homesteading, railroading, farming,or American history. Micheaux was one of a kind. The same thing that was said about writer George Schuyler could also be said about Oscar Micheaux:
"He woke up every morning to see which way the world was turning, and he took off in the opposite direction. He loved playing the role of the maverick."
