Written in a lively, down-to-earth style. -Offers 'really new thinking' in the area of organizational theory. The Intelligence Advantage makes available a new understanding of the way

How to herd cats! Leading self-organizing organizations........1999-08-16
A clearly written, conceptually lucid, practical guide to leading self-organizing organizations which can respond effectively to the demands of their environment. McMaster emphasizes that changed thinking and speaking precede changed organizations. Mechanical thinking won't make it in an age which demands organically structured organizations utilizing every ounce of intelligence of every member. Leaders who want control will wind up with no organization to lead; leaders who want to enable everyone in the organization to operate at their own maximum of creativity, freedom and productivity (no contradiction here) will survive and thrive. Amen. Applicable to non-profits and other organizations as well as businesses
it has a unique and powerful articulation on organizations.......1998-07-14
This is one of the unique and powerful works on living organizations. It should be read by everyone who likes original contributions to the literature.
McMaster rivals Nonaka's Knowledge-Creating Company.......1997-04-24
Arie de Geus, whose view of The Living Company appears in Harvard Business Review M/A 1997 says of this book: "We will fail to realise the potential of organisations until we see them as organisms in their own right and intelligence is the source of an organisation's capacity for survival. These are the basic hypotheses in Mike McMaster's thinking which, then, leads towards his illuminating ideas on organisational design and away from much of the mechanistic thinking of recent management theory". Sample David's view on innovation (page 133): "Corporations that are known for innovation are specifically designed to create occasions for innovation and support innovative activities. They include reward systems, communication practices, investment, blending people and ideas and appropriate reporting structures. In corporations not specifically designed for innovation, the innovative capacity is mostly displayed by individuals who are sufficiently powerful to get their ideas accepted. Given the lack of design to support such activity, the relative organisational innovative expression in such corporations is quite low." McMasters goes on to define innovation but notice some carefully chosen nuances in the words he uses; "Our operational definition of innnovation is THAT ACTIVITY WHICH RESULTS IN A CHANGE THAT HAS USEFULNESS BEYOND A CURRENT APPICATION AND THAT ALTERS THE ABILITY OF THE SYSTEM AS A WHOLE". Innovation increases the flexibility, complexity or computational ability of the larger system." Innovation is not therefore a natural thing for corporate boards to direct if they are paying too much attention to counting up last quarter's figures or downsizing your future. Anyway, McMasters goes on to discuss many other subtleties regarding creativity. For example : "In a group or team, creativity occurs in dialogue itself. An individual may have originated and be indentified with a creative idea. Yet, if an idea is a group creation, it is the result of the interplay of the participants, both for and against the idea. Each individual has contributed to the thinking, the creative process and the creation itself in ways that are not always obvious." Book Description
In this book an international team of authors have produced a concise and timely review of immobilized enzyme reactor (IMER) technology, with emphasis on the practical applications of IMER systems.
Book Description
This is the second edition of the author's account of celebrated controversies in geology that embrace many of the most important ideas that have emerged since the birth of the subject. Two new chapters have been added. One reviews the emergence of stratigraphy in the nineteenth century, focusing on two major controversies concerning the Cambrian-Silurian and the Devonian. The second new chapter deals with the mass extinctions controversy, which has not yet been resolved. The existing chapters have been revised in the light of recent publications. The book will be of interest to professional geologists, geology students, and amateur geologists as well as to geographers and historians of science.
Customer Reviews:
LET THE DEBATES BEGIN.......2000-08-11
I have used this book in the past for my "Great Ideas in Geology" course and it remains a great read for anyone interested in geoscientific thought. Titanic intellectual battles are played out here as catastrophists clash with uniformitarians and neptunists, vulcanists and plutonists do battle. Hallam did, however, miss an important figure in the chapter on Ice Ages. Based on his geological observations made during the construction of his cotton mill in Vernon, Connecticut, Peter Dobson correctly concluded that unusually shaped boulders of arkosic sandstone and conglomerate had been sculpted by the agency of ice transport. Dobson's observations were published in 1826, and thus preceeded the 1833 publication of Ignace Venetz' pioneering work on the same subject. As Roderick Murchison was aware of Dobson's work, Dobson deserves credit as one of, if not the, founders of glacial theory.
Topics are concise and mind-opening!.......1999-09-22
Excellant coverage of material that spans a century of controversies and brings you up to speed on the new way of thinking about the formation of the earth and how plate tectonics is at the heart of it all!! Great read for those who did not pay attention in science class!! You don't have to feel left out anymore!
Book Description
The Highlands Controversy is a rich and perceptive account of the third and last major dispute in nineteenth-century geology stemming from the work of Sir Roderick Murchison. The earlier Devonian and Cambrian-Silurian controversies centered on whether the strata of Devon and Wales should be classified by lithological or paleontological criteria, but the Highlands dispute arose from the difficulties the Scottish Highlands presented to geologists who were just learning to decipher the very complex processes of mountain building and metamorphism. David Oldroyd follows this controversy into the last years of the nineteenth century, as geology was transformed by increasing professionalization and by the development of new field and laboratory techniques. In telling this story, Oldroyd's aim is to analyze how scientific knowledge is constructed within a competitive scientific community—how theory, empirical findings, and social factors interact in the formation of knowledge.
Oldroyd uses archival material and his own extensive reconstruction of the nineteenth-century fieldwork in a case study showing how detailed maps and sections made it possible to understand the exceptionally complex geological structure of the Highlands
An invaluable addition to the history of geology, The Highlands Controversy also makes important contributions to our understanding of the social and conceptual processes of scientific work, especially in times of heated dispute.
Book Description
Frank Coles Phillips was a petrographer, mineralogist and structural petrologist working in the middle of the 20th century. He was very influential, both in the UK and abroad and was responsible for encouraging the development of structural geology as a discipline in Australia and for the adoption of the stereogram as a fundamental interpretational tool in a structural geology in the UK. He was a superb teacher, perhaps best known amongst mineralogists and geologists of today for his classic textbooks, An Introduction to Crystallography and The Use of Stereographic Projection in Structural Geology. Phillips was the first to apply the methods of structural petrology (the study of the microscopic fabric of deformed rock) in a attempt to unravel the complex structural history of the Moine rocks of northwestern Scotland. His findings were at odds with those of his contemporaries and resulted in the Moine petrofabrics becoming embroiled on a long-running controversy, only completely resolved since the mid-1980s.
This geological biography of an importance 20th century mineralogist and petrologist takes a critical look at Phillips' research in the context of contemporaneous developments in structural and Moine geology. It reviews his work in relation to both past problems and present solutions. It will be of interest to all geologists, especially structural and microstructural geologists, historians of sciences and the general reader with an interest in science.
Customer Reviews:
a very nobel author.......2001-05-07
Most people these days are reading peskin and schroeder, weinberg, ryder...etc. They are hard. Schwinger's books (3 vols) departs from most treatments; except for some similarity I think with weinberg (who i havent read). Here is what I like: 1) he wrote it to include everything but kept students in mind. 2) he wrote to counteract ''frustration with mathematical ambiguities and physical remoteness...'' 3) it is 'written by sure hands'' I would not recommend this as a first book or you might not see what he's doing; so do sakurai/bjorken and drell/ryder first, then deepen your knowledge on your second pass at the subject. In that context is it superb.

Customer Reviews:
Useful for college english 155.......2003-03-11
Required book, very useful. However explanations can be hard to understand at times. The physical layout of the book is well thought out. It is binded together which would be great if you could fold the pages like a notebook, but unfortunately you cant.
A Politically Correct Grammar Handbook.......2001-03-14
This is an excellent grammar handbook. The sections on "Common Writing Problems" and "The Basics From A to Z" are most useful. Even a well-educated and experienced writer should find it a handy reference to answer grammar or word usage rules that have been forgotten--or never learned. However, some of it is a bit simplistic. We are told "The apostrophe is a small but important mark of punctuation." Which other small marks of punctuation are not important? And are all large marks of punctuation important just because of their size?
If you are politically correct you will especially like this book. It's a celebration that the multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-racial, multi-everything America of Bill Clinton's dreams has arrived. You won't find Jack and Jill here. Luigi,Heinrich, Sean and many other western European names are also missing. The examples are about Chayyal, Juana, Shanelle, Mustapha, and La Shonda. Hopefully, the authors will receive a letter from "Conjugates-With-Alacrity" complaining about the lack Lakota Sioux names.
PC gender politics are evident in the examples "Captain Janeway found the universe to be bigger than she had thought" and "Darla left the house because of her husband's violence." Four pages are devoted to "Biased Uses of Language."
There is an entire section devoted to "ESL (English as a Second Language) Writers," who are all immigrants. Little world symbols throughout the book highlight points of special concern to ESL writers. Bad grammar is "nonstandard English" rather than bad grammar. Those who use plantation English like "She love him until he die" are admonished to "include the standard endings when you are writing." How about when speaking during a job interview? Apparently the authors would rather be PC about not offending those who speak this way than to condemn this as bad grammar on all occasions.
Much of this book is for students but that is not revealed in the title. The sections on writing school papers and ESL are about half the book. Those extra pages and the plastic spiral binding are probably why it costs about twice as much as a grammar handbook should cost. If you need a book that will remain open at the desired page while you use both hands to cook or repair your motorcycle then it may be worth paying for spiral binding but it is unnecessary in a grammar book.
Unless you plan to carry it around a campus in your backpack, you would do well to compare this to The Chicago Style Manual of Style before buying.
Helpful book.......2000-12-15
I just started my Masters program and found this book helpful in my writing style. I found the book easy to reference material with and it made sense of things so that you could understand easily what the author was explaining. I recommend this book for all levels of education.
