Great Book about Warren Buffet.......2007-09-21
Gives you a simple overview about the investment genius. Great Book, gives you a feel forFinancial Statement Analysis: A Practitioner's Guide, 3rd Edition how the genius handles things.
Decent.......2007-09-15
The book is decent. If you really want to learn about the Buffet Way then there are better books -like "Making of an American capitalistic" and Essays of Buffet. This book tries to abstract the concepts and present them in an easy to read manner.
The reason I give it 3 stars is - after reading "Making of an American.." , I found the information in this book less useful.
Hagstrom does a good job of abstracting though.
Maybe I was expecting too much.......2007-06-14
It's not that this book isn't well written. It is factual and has much historical information. It thoroughly explains the early influences on Warren Buffet and how he has modified his approach over the years. After reading it, I'm not sure I really understand HOW WB decided to bet the farm on Coke or Washington Post, only that he did so. Perhaps it's too much to expect that I can read the book and become a genius investor or even understand how WB did.
Warren Buffet, What Else Can I say?.......2007-05-07
This book is like most books in the sense that it guides the reader through Birkshire Hathaways most important and most lucrative deals ever. The way that this book is different is that the author takes you through the mentality of Warren before, during and after those deals. It shows the reader a pyschological view at Warren's investing style and how we, the regular investor, could incorporate his style into our investing prefrences. Recommend this book to any Warren Buffett fan but not to the most serious and devoted investors out there. If you really want to invest like Warren, buy The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Grahm and Security Analysis by Benjamin Grahm and David Dodd. These books will shoe you exactly how Warren does it and why.
The philosophy of Warren Buffett without getting to technical.......2007-04-19
Warren Buffet is the greatest investor alive today. His track record speaks for itself and this book goes some small way towards explaining the inner workings of this investment genius. A few years ago I passed on buying Buffetology because I thought I wasn't ready for it and now found this book from my best friend Vergal Walton.
The Warren Buffet Way is the most readable book I've come across on investment so far. The essence of this book is summarised in the various chapters of the book. The stories of the companies that Buffet invests in from the earliest days to the most recent are all entertaining and extremely insightful. One of the core underlying principles is to take the long term view of with investments. And when buying shares to think of it as buying a business and behaving in a way that the owner would behave. The Dot com crash was almost a directly result of short term opportunistic investments. And the whole investment philosophy of Buffet rests on theories expounded more than 50 years ago by Benjamin Graham and David Dodd in Security Analysis as well as The Intelligent Investor also by Graham.
Historically Buffet bought sizeable interests in publicly traded companies from the Coca-Cola company to the Gillette company. And more recently he has moved into purchasing privately held companies outright. As he says he is willing to own these businesses forever. That is an exceptional attitude in investment. Hagestrom described Buffet as the focussed investor. Rather investing large sums of money in a smaller number of companies.
The Focus Investor's Golden Rules:
1.Concentrate your investment in outstanding companies run by strong management
2.Limit yourself to the number of companies you can truly understand. Ten to twenty is good, more than twenty is asking for trouble.
3.Pick the very best of your good companies, and put the bulk of your investment there.
4.Think long-term: five to ten years, minimum.
5.Volatility happens. Carry on.

Book Description
Utilizing actual case studies and field photographs, this successful lab manual covers the full spectrum of historical geology sediments, plate tectonics, paleontology, and petrology in flexible, self-contained units. This manual has been developed for use in both nonmajors and combined courses in historical geology. The exercises emphasize the principles and methods by which geologists discover the origins and changing nature of our planet.
These exercises or "studies" will help students understand how ancient conditions can be read from rocks and fossils, how geologic forces at the surface and within the planet can alter the environment, and how events of the past can be placed within an integrated chronological sequence. The exercises are designed for students who may not intend to specialize in geology. This does not mean, however, that the treatment is superficial, nor that it cannot give adequate preparation for students pursuing an academic major in the earth sciences.
Customer Reviews:
Lab Instructor considers this full of inconsistencies.......2006-02-28
I teach a college geology lab that uses this lab book; I didn't chose it. It is filled with inconsistencies, no wonder the students are confused! It will give the students a picture and in one question tell them something about it, then in the next question completely contradict what they said previously. This makes grading just wretched; I often don't catch all these incosistencies before lab, and when reading through the students answers I have to go back and see if their answer makes sense in the context of what they were told.
Additionally, there is often not enough detail given to answer the question. For example, they are given a sequence of strata and asked whether the strata make up different time-rock units; but they don't know the age of anything in the picture! So how are they supposed to know?
I would never use this book. It's better to use something more elementary that doesn't confuse the students. I understand this lab book is trying to be more indepth than other lab books out there, but if the students are getting confused by it they're not learning more.
ok. but not as good as advertised........2005-10-11
There was a lot more writing in the book than expected. It did get to me in a timely manner and no pages were missing.
Historical Geology Lab Manual.......2002-02-16
I've taught Historical Geology labs from this manual starting with the third edition. I believe that this is one of the better lab texts on the subject but I hear the same complaints from students using the seventh edition that I heard from those using the third - "How are we supposed to interpret the information contained in these poor quality black-and-white photographs that typically lack a scale and a complete verbal description?" and "Why do the questions in the manual seem so 'obtuse'? We can't understand what is being asked for." I've seen only a slight improvement in photographic illustrations over the years (very, very few new illustrations) and minimal improvement in the "clarity" of questions. The colour geologic map plates are typically so poorly printed that I long ago stopped having students do geologic cross sections because we couldn't see elevation contour lines, differentiate colour patterns for formations, or read the strike and dip symbols. There are still (after 20 years) no exercises dealing with evolution theory. Examples of "applied" geology (petroleum, mining, hydrology) are still few in number and simplistic.
Book Description
This work shows that information is at the root of all fields of science. These fields may be generated by use of the concept of "extreme physical information" or EPI. The book greatly expands the material in Physics from Fisher Information to include many other areas in science.

Nothing new.......2007-07-11
The essence of really great theoretical physics is that it creates new insights and makes novel, experimentally verifiable predictions that take us in new directions, capabilities and understanding.
And that is what is missing from Frieden's work, thoroughly reviewed here - it just re-derives well-established standard-physics results from a different angle, but doesn't lead into new pastures - or at least, not yet... So what?
Must try harder; 'me too' is simply not good enough.
little information in this book.......2006-05-02
I was very excited at the first eyedrop in this book.
But having read half of it, I asked myself: what did I learn and is it worth to continue the reading.
What I learned is the definition of the Fisher information matrix and the eventuality that the laws of physics are woven with the thread of information. But I stopped reading further.
I had the bad feeling that the author greatly overstates his case.
It was nearly clear for me that all applications of the supposed theory where built on a simple canvas:
- rename the two terms of the Lagrangian as 'Fisher information' and 'physical information'
- and rename further the least-action-principle as 'EPI' (Extreme Physical Information)
Still, I think the subject is interresting and I may myself give it a second chance.
Therefore it is a good buy only if you can accept some disappointement and if you hope to go further by yourself.
statistics is the Theory of Everything.......2005-02-10
If, like me, you're fed up with popular science books which are too scared to include equations, I expect you'll find this as enormously challenging, stimulating and satisfying as I did.
The author interprets all physical measurement as extraction of Fisher information from the object being measured. From this he derives, for example, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle as a special case of the Cramer-Rao lower bound. By assuming, in addition, conservation of charge he derives Maxwell's equations and, similarly, from conservation of momentum he derives general relativity. He also derives - - amongst others! - - classical thermodynamics, and the Klein-Gordon equation (relativistic generalization of Schrodinger equation).
He also uses his theory to make predictions, such as that the neutrino has mass >0, and that the rate of change of entropy has a finite upper bound (as well as the lower bound of zero). Towards the end of the book are chapters on less physical topics including financial markets and cancer growth.
It wasn't easy going, even with a degree in maths (more knowledge of tensors would've helped), but the way he derives such a frankly amazing amount from so few premises convinces me that he is on to something important.
Clarifying physics.......2002-06-22
"Physics from Fisher Information" is a unification, indeed. The author derives the physical laws for such different fields as quantum mechanics, classical electromechanics, general relativity and statistical mechanics from the single powerful principle of Extreme Physical Information (EPI). This principle probably goes deeper than merely a mathematical similarity between the laws, which as such already helps to grasp the full picture of physics. Personally, I think it's a pity this clarifying book was not written yet when I was a student of physics. To miss this book, is to miss something essential.

Customer Reviews:
You ought to be ashamed.......1999-10-11
The Pushcart Prize is the most wonderful and rewarding annual anthology out there because, for one thing, it's the most fair--as Bill Henderson says in his introduction, there's no money here. You don't have to have written a bestseller or be in with the "New Yorker" crowd in order to be published here. All you have to do is be a good writer. Here is fiction and poetry at its rawest and purest form, from writers who write for the sake of writing, for the sheer love of it. This is a noble thing.
