Book Description
"Lean Thinking" has dominated product development and project management for over a decade. Now, however, a six-year study by MIT's International Motor Vehicle Program led by Michael Cusumano and Kentaro Nobeoka finds that, in order to dramatically improve product portfolios, Toyota and other leading companies are moving beyond single-project management on which lean thinking is based. In Thinking Beyond Lean, Cusumano and Nobeoka show that single-project management can produce isolated hit products and "fat" designs that contain few common components and many unnecessary parts and features. As a result, in this era of slowing growth and falling profits, leading companies are maximizing their investment by utilizing a groundbreaking concept the authors call "multi-project management." Drawing on a data base of 210 automobile products and detailed case studies from Toyota, Ford, GM, Chrysler, Nissan, Honda, Mazda, Renault, and Fiat, the authors demonstrate how product development teams can share engineers and key common components but retain separate designers to maintain distinctive product features. The result: multi-project management has brought these companies huge savings in development and production costs.
Cusumano and Nobeoka's findings will be required reading for every company that makes more than one product. Taking up where The Machine That Changed the World left off, Thinking Beyond Lean will change the way leaders do business now and in the future.

Too good but too high!.......2000-10-17
Actually, I don't own one but our ISO 9000 group has one, second edition. The contents are interesting and realistic in nature. Since I am documenting procedures for our ISO certification, I wish I could have one for my own reference but the price is too high. Perhaps you can come up with a photocopied version at a lower price for us technical people to have one. This book will be of great help in our company's drive for ISO 9000 certification! Thanks a lot!
THE BOOK for sugar industry.......2000-05-04
This book, or should I say Encyclopedia, is the best book on the sugar industry ever written. It describes in detail each and every part of a Sugar industry, with useful information and guide to designers and constructers. Ther is no doubt to it, every person in the industry uses it. Both the english and French versions are the most complete literature that one may expect. But the price is still too high to be available to engineers and technicians.
It is useful to both the one working in a sugar factory and the one who designs and constructs the apparatus.
One point that may be added for futur editions is a small chapter on structural steel work that exist in a sugar factory, which constitute an important % of the investment.

The theory of transmission lines is a classical topic of electrical engineering. Recently this topic has received renewed attention and has been a focus of considerable research. This is because the transmisson line theory has found new and important applications in the area of high-speed VLSI interconnects, while it has retained its significance in the area of power transmission. In many applications, transmission lines are connected to nonlinear circuits. For instance, interconnects of high-speed VLSI chips can be modelled as transmission lines loaded with nonlinear elements. These nonlinearities may lead to many new effects such as instability, chaos, generation of higher order harmonics, etc. The mathematical models of transmission lines with nonlinear loads consist of the linear partial differential equations describing the current and voltage dynamics along the lines together with the nonlinear boundary conditions imposed by the nonlinear loads connected to the lines. These nonlinear boundary conditions make the mathematical treatment very difficult. For this reason, the analysis of transmission lines with nonlinear loads has not been addressed adequately in the existing literature. The unique and distinct feature of the proposed book is that it will present systematic, comprehensive, and in-depth analysis of transmission lines with nonlinear loads.
* A unified approach for the analysis of networks composed of distributed and lumped circuits
* A simple, concise and completely general way to present the wave propagation on transmission lines, including a thorough study of the line equations in characteristic form
* Frequency and time domain multiport representations of any linear transmission line
* A detailed analysis of the influence on the line characterization of the frequency and space dependence of the line parameters
* A rigorous study of the properties of the analytical and numerical solutions of the network equations
* The associated discrete circuits and the associated resisitive circuits of transmission lines
* Periodic solutions, bifurcations and chaos in transmission lines connected to noninear lumped circuits

Take Your Brain Out of The Box.......2006-09-10
In agreement with the other reviewer, this is a good synthesis of the theories of the scientists reviewed and very readable with discussions in layman terms. However, if one has not been introduced to these theories, then spend the time to take the brain out of the box and on a wonderful stroll. If so, I am confident that after consumption of these theories you will have an active interest and enthusiasm to pursue further studies or reading in one of the three.
A merge of sciences to find the meaning of life.......2000-06-29
Wright focuses on the theories of digital physicist Edward Fredkin (the universe is a computer), sociobiologist Edward O. Wilson (the universe is united by genes and culture), and Kenneth Boulding (the universe is united through communication as a natural process of evolution). Each man has *faith* in his hypothesis without following it up with rigorous experiments. Therefore, this book reads as one man's evaluation of other men's ego trips. I give it four stars, tho, because it is an excellent review and synthesis of these theories, including their origins. The book touches upon the "coincidence" that each theory maps into the basic tenets of the world's religions. Wright includes a fantastic bibliography with reviews of each listing; definitely worthwhile if you are interested in any of these theories. (For a more captivating read of Wright, check out _The Moral Animal_ and _Nonzero_. In those books, he continues what he starts in _Three Scientists_.)
