                Book Description

Are there furry creatures on the moon? Or Martians who ride spaceships to Earth? Today we know Martians don't exist, but we also know that plants and animals may live far beyond our solar system. Franklyn M. Branley's fascinating text and Edward Miller's zany illustrations tap into kids' curiosity to give a dazzling tour of life out among the stars. Updated with new photos of Mars and a "Find Out More" page full of hands-on activities.`This is a lighthearted yet serious introduction to the concept of life on other planets. It stretches the imagination by asking questions about life off Earth and then attempts to answer them. Whimsically illustrated descriptions of old theories give a light touch to some pretty odd ideas. . . . In stark contrast to these colorful drawings are the black-and-white photographs of astronauts and the surfaces of the moon and Mars showing the absolute lack of life so far uncovered.' —SLJ.

2 out of 5 stars There might be... but not in our solar system, says Branley.......2000-06-26

By relating famous hoaxes such as the radio broadcast of H.G. Well's War of the Worlds and discussing recent space probes to Mars, Mercury and Venus, Branley comes to the conclusion that there might be life beyond Earth... but not in our solar system. While he admits there may be possibilities of life in other galaxies, he claims there most likely isn't life in our solar system except for what exists on Earth. This is an outdated and inaccurate view. The goal of the series is to introduce basic science concepts to young children, but the only concept I came away with was very Earth-centric - none of our species could live on Mars, ergo, there is no life on Mars. Branley never defines life. In truth, we cannot assume "life" to be carbon based, requiring warm temperatures and sunlight. In fact, on our very own planet we have found species that do not require these things. Instead of writing "there is no life on Mars," Branley should have written, "There is no life as we know it today on Mars. If this idea is too scary for young children, perhaps there isn't a need for a low-level book on this topic. At the least, the book serves as a jumping off point for an interesting discussion. The authorial intrusion in the book ("People also say it's silly to believe there is life on them [other planets]. I don't think so.") is annoying and condescending. The writing is too simplified; children could handle more details than are given about the planets, the space program, and the various ways alien life has been envisioned in our culture. The illustrations are a bizarre mix of simple brightly colored collage style pictures and photographs. The diagram of the solar system is great, and whimsical aliens decorate the end papers and many pages. A page of further activities concludes the book. No works are cited, no resources for more information are listed. A glossary, index and timeline would have been appropriate inclusions. This book was originally published in 1984; it needs much more overhaul than it received.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic and Educational.......2000-06-11

This book talks in children's words about a subject that adults learned so long ago that they may have forgotten. The artistic side of the book keeps children entertained without taking away from the subject content. My five year old loves this book.

The material in this volume provides the basic theory necessary to understand the principles behind imaging the subsurface of the Earth using reflection and refraction seismology. For reflection seismology, the end product is a "record section" from a collection of "wiggly traces" that are recorded in the field from which information about the properties of subsurface structure and rock can be derived. For the most part, the principles of imaging are the same regardless of the depth to the target; the same mathematical background is necessary for targeting a shallow water table as for investigating the base of the earth's continental "crust" at a depth of 30-50 km.

This book is incredibly comprehensible and interesting. It was vaguely assigned as supplemental reading for my physics class and I read it in two days because I was hooked.

This book is an excellent introduction to special relativity. It very carefully distinguishes between the different types of time measurements. Also, it is one of the few introductory books that actually teaches the reader how to make use of spacetime diagrams. Advanced topics such as transformations of electromagnetic fields are not covered, but this this book will give you a strong basis for further study.

If want to get the same content for about $20 less, buy Unit R of Thomas Moore's Six Ideas That Shaped Physics. It seems that A Traveler's Guide to Spacetime became one volume in that series. Also, the Six Ideas book is in the second edition, but this book has not been updated.

Not only did Thomas Moore write a great book, he is also an excellent teacher. It is relativity made easy. Be sure to look for the Six Ideas that Shaped Physics if you really want to learn general physics. Moore emphasizes the models of physics, not the equations generate dby these models.

A Traveler's Guide to Spacetime is a wonderful introduction to the realm of Special Relativity. Moore presents the material in interesting format combining imaginative scenarios of evil space cadets with intuitive yet complicated equations.

This books probably isn't the best place to start for someone just becoming interested in either Alan Watts or in Eastern thought in general. However, for osmeone who is interested in Alan Watts, it is invaluable. It shows him just coming into his own as a writer - most of them were written when he was in his late teens and early twneties, and shows him strruggling to devlop his style and the finer points of his philosophy. THe introductory material is especially helpful

                                          Book Description

Originally published as appendices, or supplements, to the Annual Report of the State Historian of the State of New York for the years 1897 and 1898, these two volumes contain transcriptions of all colonial muster rolls on deposit in the state capital at Albany for the years 1664 to 1775. Incorporating a variety of records, including pay rolls, size rolls, petitions, minutes of meetings and official proceedings, journals, correspondence, and various field reports, this offical record of New York's colonial militia covers the period concerning the capture of New Netherlands from the Dutch (1664), the recapture of New York by the Dutch (1673), the restoration of New York to the English (1674), the unsuccessful expeditions against Canada (1689-1690 and 1709-1711), the French and Indian War, including the Battle of Lake George in 1755, and the outbreak of the War of the Revolution in 1775, listing all militia companies raised to quell mutinies, insurrections, and uprisings, or to do battle with the French and Indians and to protect New York's borders--usually from French and Iroquois incursions or threatened hostilities from Connecticut. Chiefly of interest to information-starved New York researchers and to others whose roots reach back to colonial New York, this work identifies approximately 30,000 men who served in the various militia companies during the period before the Revolution, including privateers and free-lancers such as Captain William Kidd. Arranged chronologically, and then more or less by county, city, town, and manor, and thereunder by militia company--each headed by a captain--the muster rolls are both spare and full, spare during the early years and comparatively rich in later years. At a minimum, each militiaman is noted in connection with his date of enlistment, his company and company commander, his rank, and his place of residence. But more often than not, information provided in the muster rolls includes such important items as place of birth, age, occupation, height, and physical description. Altogether this is an extraordinary body of information, little known until now, but of immeasurable value to anyone undertaking early New York genealogical research. In fact, it is one of the last great New York resources to be reprinted, though ironically it may prove to be a starting point in research. Published originally as Appendix "H" of the Second Annual Report of the State Historian of the State of New York (1897) and Appendix "M" of the Third Annual Report (1898), all names mentioned in the two volumes are indexed together at the end of Appendix "M".

                                            Book Description

This is the story of the Timucua, an American Indian people who thrived for centuries in the southeast portion of what is now the United States of America.Timucua groups lived in Northern Florida and Southern Georgia, a region occupied by native people for thirteen millennia. They were among the first of the American Indians to come in contact with Europeans, when the Spaniard Juan Ponce de Leon landed on the Florida coast in 1513. Thousands of archaeological sites, village middens and sand and shell mounds still dot the landscape, offering mute testimony to the former presence of the Timucua and their ancestors. Two hundred and fifty years after Ponce de Leon's voyage the Timucua had disappeared, extinguished by the ravages of colonialism. Who were the Timucua? Where did they come from? How did they live? What caused their extinction? These are questions this book attempts to answer, using information gathered from archaeological excavations and from the interpretation of historical documents left behind by the European powers, mainly Spain and France, who sought to colonize Florida and to place the Timucua under their sway.

Thanks to all of the archaeologists who have worked to answer all these questions.

                                              Book Description

Spanning 12,000 years, this scientifically accurate yet non-technical and easily digestible book guides readers through the prehistoric and historic archaeological evidence left by Georgia's native peoples. It is the only comprehensive, up-to-date, and text-based overview of its kind in print. Max White draws on an extensive body of archaeological and historical data, tracing Native American cultural development and accomplishment over the millennia preceding the establishment of Georgia as a colony and state. Each chapter opens with a vivid fictional vignette that transports the reader to a past culture and sets the scene for the narrative that follows. From hunting giant buffalo and elephants to attempts in the 1700s and 1800s to maintain tribal integrity in the face of European and Euro-American violence and threats, White takes the reader on an archaeologically-based tour of the land that today is Georgia.

Evidence from select archaeological sites and projects is woven into the narrative, and insets supplement the main text to highlight informative quotes from archaeological reports and historical documents. A generous number of photographs, maps, and illustrations are included to aid the reader in identifying artifacts and to give testimony to the artistic abilities of these indigenous peoples of Georgia.

                                                  Book Description

This book-a visual guide to the structure and anatomy of birds-is one of the most heavily illustrated ornithology references ever written. A concise atlas of avian anatomy, it contains more than 200 specially prepared, accurate, and clear drawings that include material never illustrated before. The text is as informative as the drawings; written at a level appropriate to undergraduate students and to bird lovers in general, it explains why birds look and act the way they do.

This is a great overall look into the evolution and biology of birds. I'm using it as a prep for some ornithology and biology courses at university. The book goes through evolution, systematics, biology, physiology, etc. I highly reccomend it for anyone needing to do some brush up work, or as an introduction to many of the topics I've mentioned above. I think it should pretty much be a standard for anyone interested in birds...Hooray for this manual!

5 out of 5 stars good source for avian physiology.......2000-01-13

This book is excellent for ornithology students and backyard birders alike. It has many detailed illustrations of the skeletal, muscular, and other internal systems of birds in general. The text gives general information on each system and then more detail on specific parts. I especially like the sections at the end on binocular use and study skin preparation

5 out of 5 stars Excellent drawings, clear text........1999-04-24

If you have only one textbook about birds on your bookshelf, choose this one. The text is easy to understand, and the illustrations are remarkable. It is now available in a less expensive paperback version, also available at Amazon.com.
