Book Description

This enlightening parable entertains as it helps readers anticipate and respond to change in their lives. In the tale, two mice, Sniff and Scurry and two littlepeople, Hem and Haw, look for the "Cheese" - which represents success, happiness, and security - in the "Maze" - whether it be the workplace, the community, or relationships. In this calendar, each page offers a thought-provoking slice of the story, or an inspirational quotation from diverse well-known figures such as Thomas A. Edison, Michael Jordan, Henry David Thoreau, and Sam Walton, as well as Dr. Johnson's new insightful commentary on those quotations, often in the language of Who Moved My Cheese?. It gives readers an a-Mazing way to deal with change and win.

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2003-01-04

While the message in this book would seem obvious, not everyone takes away the same "lessons". My wife, for instance, insists that it is better to enjoy your cheese while it lasts rather than looking for new cheese all the time.

Someone else has created entire website around this subject and insists that you should resist when someone moves the cheese.

An insipid book to give to an incompetent employee before laying off.

2 out of 5 stars Little substance........2002-11-28

For those who are not familiar with the book, "Who Moved My Cheese?" is a simple parable that illustrates the natural tendency to resist change. The uncertainty that generally accompanies change in the workplace provides a level of discomfort that some try to escape. Rather than take the necessary steps for change, some employees cling to old notions and actions that produce little or no results.

Of course, it has been known for decades that people tend to avoid tasks that cause physical, mental, or emotional discomfort. Why it takes a simple little story about mice and cheese for some people to understand this is beyond me. Perhaps it provides a non-threatening, feel-good reminder of what we already know about ourselves?

The problem I see with "Who Moved My Cheese?" is not the message, but the difficulty in reducing such a simple little concept into practice. Knowing that we need to "search around the maze for new cheese" is equivalent to the stock market wizards telling us to buy low and sell high, or business experts telling us that we need to possess organizational savvy to be successful. These are things we all nod our heads in agreement with . . . but then what? We are left without any guidelines for determining when we are "moving around the maze" or simply "sitting at the cheese station."

Reading "Who Moved My Cheese?" is like signing up for the membership at the health club. It sure feels good, and it can be the start to something better, but the real work is yet to come. Read the book. Ponder its contents. But expect some discomfort if you really want to make progress.

Found it full of patronizing pap and pizzle. Offers few tips for managing change. Mostly tells you to get over it.

5 out of 5 stars A good book.......2002-10-17

¡§Who Moved My Cheese¡¨ is a book about the challenges we have to face. It is a short story with a good concept.
The main theme of the book is ¡§CHANGES¡¨. Of course, changes are not easy to adapt to. However, if we attach importance to one thing, we need to have enough courage to do it. Different people will see the cheese differently. Some may see it as their achievement at work; others may see it as their friends or their romances etc.
I do not know what your cheese is. You may face a problem that you feel is difficult to solve. So, ¡§Who Moved My Cheese ¡§is a good book for you to read.

I read this book twice. The first time I read it, it changed some of my perspectives. I felt that I am like Hem, a character in the book. Hem always complains about everything but never do anything to try and change the situation. I think I am Ham the second time I read the book. I am afraid to face the difficulty associated with change, but eventually, I will try to overcome it. I know I need time to adjust my way of thinking, but at least I have taken the first step.
This book is really worth reading. It may change your life. You may look at things from a simpler perspective. Trust me, life will be easier.

I read this book two times, first time I read this book, It change my mind on seeing things what happen around me. During that time I read this book, I feel that I am like Hem, who is the character of the book. I only know to complaint all bad things happen around me, and do not take action to change the worse situation, differently, the second time, I think I am Haw, who is the other character of the book. I afraid the difficulties during I change, luckily, at the end; I try it and make a successful. Although, I need time to adjust my view on face problems, I try it; I have gone my first step.

          Book Description

This book focuses on the pioneer of such intervention, California's widely acclaimed Community Treatment Project (CTP). During its 12-year operation CTP essentially instituted and legitimized community-based programming as a viable option for both national and international corrections. It also developed and field-tested many of the strategies and techniques for working with serious delinquents that are now common such as staff/youth matching and group homes. As did CTP itself, the book draws from an underlying, developmental view of adolescence and its challenges. In reflecting such a perspective, and in light of society's fundamental need for long-term protection, the book presents an ethical/pragmatic rationale for setting goals that highlight personal-emotional growth and new types or levels of social skills. In remaining centered on the goal of long-term public protection, the individualized intervention can both accomodate and guide the recent interest in restorative justice.

              Book Description

Volcanoes, earthquakes, and giant killer tidal waves called tsunamis . . . We think of these events as disasters, but for Earth they are merely business as usual. This dramatically illustrated book describes some of the more than 3,000 active volcanoes scattered around the planet, and chronicles many of history's most devastating volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tidal waves. The author explains that volcanoes and earthquakes both result from movement of the Earth's vast tectonic plates, and are most likely to occur at or near places where two or more plates come together. Such movement has been going on since the Earth's origins, creating mountain ranges and dividing the landmass into separate continents. Described in these pages are volcanic blasts from the past: Vesuvius, Italy in 79 A.D. ... Laki, Iceland in 1783 ... Tambora, Indonesia in 1815 ... Krakatoa, Indonesia in 1883 ... Mount St. Helens, Washington State in 1980 ... Pinatubo, the Philippines in 1991, and others. Also chronicled are earthquakes that have struck large population centers, producing disasters in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1755, San Francisco in 1906, Tokyo-Yokohama, Japan, in 1923, and Kobe, Japan, in 1995. The Earth's major trouble spots and likely targets for future earthquakes are described. Urban areas in greatest danger continue to be those along the Pacific Rim, which encompasses North America's West Coast and most of Japan's cities. Here is an intensely readable summary of natural disasters that have struck the earth, along with informed speculation on how and when similar events will recur in the future. More than 200 color illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars A splendid guide to tectonic hazards.......2002-08-05

This book is a five-star summation of the numerous tectonic hazards faced by human civilization. It is impressively written and contains numerous, informative color photographs and diagrams. Each discussion is separated and encapsulated into a mini-chapter; a format I find facilitates depth of understanding. Target Earth!, by Duncan Steel, covering impact hazards from asteroids and comets, is similarly well organized.

The book is very up-to-date in terms of the science involved. The discusssion of the mega-tsunami hazard from La Palma volcano in the Canary Islands is especially impressive, and frightening.
The entire United States East Coast is threatened by a landslide and giant tsunami from this volcano. All such cities will be destroyed if the worst case scenario takes place.

While the world very likely is not going to end tomorrow, it can be greatly readjusted by powerful tectonic forces leaving great destruction in their wake. Anyone interested in geology or geophysics, or living in a tectonically active area should read this book closely. The same goes for any coastal dweller, with respect to tsunami threats.

I recommend this book very highly.

Author concentrates on radiometry and detector basics, and does not give up to date performance specs on detectors or current trends etc which may soon be out of date. He does not cover readout electronics. I appreciate the fact that he derives a lot of things (formulas for integrating sphere, fourth power cosine law, etc.) instead of just stating results. He does the basics, and in my opinion does them very well. He also does not take forever to come to the point.

There are all sorts of typical measurement results for outdoor infrared signature measurements--not military targets but backgrounds and material samples, as well as a pretty complete explanation of the underlying physical processes, along with all the equations you'll ever need. The presentation is a little basic by modern standards, and the overall level of difficulty is high, more than the "Tutorial Texts" in the title suggests.

5 out of 5 stars semiconductor optical detectors.......2006-02-16

I have owned this book since 1988.The book is an excellent referecne book that details the basic physics as well as characteristics (needed for design)of different types of radiation detectors. The discussion of theory behind "detectivity",fgigure of merit, speed of response, signal to noise ratio, various sources of noise in semiconductor detectors, etc. are key items in any design. The info. on Focal plane array type detectors, shottky based diode structrues, PIN, APD, photoconductors are precise .I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning physics of semiconductor detectors structures. ref.: www.daghighian-henry.com
