Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Must read for everyone.......2005-12-11

Whenever I manage a group this is one of the 3 books I ask everyone to read. This is a superb guide to how someone should approach work tactically.

Not everything in it is worth following, but most of it is. And it is a very good picture of how to succeed at Microsoft. One of Microsoft's key to success is that every employee more or less follows the guidelines in this book. The trick of this book is Julie wrote down what were the unofficial guides to work there.

5 out of 5 stars National Best Seller.......2004-11-13

This book was published in 14 languages and was a national best seller. Reading it, I can see why. The tips in this book make sense for any industry, any job. Also a look behind the scenes at Microsoft and how they do things is fascinating, and at times funny. The sequel, "The Microsoft Edge," is also useful and actually funnier.

3 out of 5 stars Good ideas but nothing revolutionary.......2003-11-16

This book has many good ideas, but most people have probably thought, heard, or read them elsewhere. It is an enjoyable, humorous read, however. For those with limited business backgrounds it would make a great starting point.

5 out of 5 stars fun, easy read........2002-08-15

This 160-page book is a very quick read, with a fun, pithy tone. All of the advice is 100 percent on the money, with insightful stories to further drive home the point. Packed with high-energy advice that can be applicable to any company.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars It Will Last.......2002-04-10

So the bubble has burst and Microsoft got sued. But some things about the energetic, questing 90s need to remembered. This was a time when new ideas counted, when creative effort was rewarded, when individual and company excitement were almost indistinguishable. Bick's book celebrates those time with advice that will last, regardless where the market goes or which fad is hot. Because it is written for the individual it applies to relations, activities and good practice in all kinds of business settings. The writing is direct, tied to examples, free of jargon and spiced with more than occasional humor. The sharpest instruction don't need embellishment or hype. This book tells things straight and clearly. Bick may have learned at Microsoft, but her advice is universal.

      Book Description

Stock market investors have very different reactions to downside versus upside risk. This book begins by explaining the current treatment of stock market risk and methods of lowering that risk. The authors then show that many types of asymmetry of stock returns or investor reactions cause the existing theory to fail. They present the theory of downside risk and utility theory to account for the asymmetry, showing how the previous model can be adjusted for downside risk.

      Book Description

The conservative ""social issues agenda"" promises to use the power of law to effect a cultural counterrevolution that would negate the successes of the civil rights movement, the women's movement, and the gay rights movement. In this lively and provocative book, ([a constitutional law scholar] for law ads) the author of Belonging to America discusses a wide range of issues-from street crime and pornography to abortion and school prayer-and argues eloquently that most of the social issues agenda violates the constitutional principle of equal citizenship.

      5 out of 5 stars A most intelligent book.......1998-04-29

Many social science books are propaganda pieces for a particular viewpoint or ideology. Not this one. This one is a calm, cool, and collected analysis of why the conservative social-issue agenda is not a true defense of any family value but an effort to push the political interests of those with an old-time white male evangelical Christian ideal, at the expense of everyone else -- blacks, women, libertarians, Native Americans, Jews, other non-christians, etc. On the other hand, this book is not a textbook, and does require some prior knowledge of U.S. constitutional law. It may be easier to understand to readers with at least a college-level government or constitutional law class.

                  Book Description

This book presents a series of integrated papers on the latest techniques and concepts for understanding the fossil record of primates; including humans. Papers review the dating of primate fossil finds from many areas of the world, as well as the status and importance of recent discoveries of fossils linking the monkeys and apes to humans. Further contributions compare the anatomy and growth of living primates to that of the ancestral animals in order to give an understanding of trends in evolution. A final section discusses the application of recently developed genetic techniques to interpret and explain the evolution of primates. By presenting the most recent research, this volume provides a valuable synthesis of the new developments in primate and human evolution.

                    Book Description

The survival of primates in their natural habitats is of growing concern to primatologists, ecologists and conservationists. In this volume, research on feeding behaviour, nutrition and digestive physiology from captive and wild primates is presented. Correlates of the habitat and social organisation are discussed, and then integrated with the pressing problem of how to conserve primates. Broad issues of confrontation between human and non-human primate populations are considered in the light of conflicting priorities for land-use and development. The increased knowledge of what primates require for their survival is applied to problems of captive propagation as a means of reducing dependence on exploiting wild populations. The papers presented in this volume will stimulate discussion between ecologists, conservationists and those concerned with land-use management to establish realistic policies for primate conservation.

                      Book Description

This volume presents a comprehensive review of the current research in the field of primate thinking, learning and behavioural development. Recent theories of the ways in which primates perceive their world are integrated with the ways that they behave and communicate about each other and their environment. Many different species in both the wild and in captivity are discussed with coverage from the social development of neonates to the behaviour of adults. The common theme to the contributions is an attempt to understand how primates perceive, learn about and manipulate their social and physical environment.

                          Book Description

This book presents a rigorous application of modern electromagnetic field theory to atomic theory. The historical view of quantum theory was developed before four major physical principles were known, or understood. These are (1) the standing energy that accompanies and encompasses electromagnetically active, electrically small volumes, (2) the power-frequency relationships in nonlinear systems, (3) the possible directivity of modal fields, and (4) electron nonlocality. The inclusion of these four effects yields a deterministic interpretation of quantum theory that is consistent with those of other sciences; the quixotic axioms of the historically accepted view of quantum theory are not needed. The new interpretation preserves the full applicability of electromagnetic field theory within atoms, showing that the status of all physical phenomena - including that within atoms - at any instant does completely specify the status an instant later.

5 out of 5 stars Everyday science at its best.......2000-08-01

A variety of everyday phenomena are explained in this little book (185 pages). Most of it is optics and thermal physics, like frost and dew on the window, interference colors, mirages, heating and cooling (of LA smog, the greenhouse effect) origin of seasons, ...

Quite complex concepts like optical thickness are illustrated with nice experiments (pouring milk in water) and by foot steps in the snow. Don't be afraid of refractive index gradients or polarization upon reflection, Bohren will explain them marvelously.

I hope more physics textbooks would be like this: this is intriguing science whereas geometrical optics, the school book stuff, is mostly boring. Besides, these experiments and observations can be carried out by anybody with commonly available stuff: you only need a light bulb, a ruler and some volunteers to measure solar irrandiance, with 10-20% accuracy.

5 out of 5 stars A Different and Entertaining Premise.......2007-07-23

I've read many vampire novels, and this one really stood out to me. The concept of a vampire using AA's Twelve Step program to kick his blood habit is quite clever and unique. At least in my reading experience.

I also enjoyed the characters, which I found to be believable, likeable, and interesting. I liked the chemistry between Christian and Jolee. I was surprised by the "heat" level of the story, because the cover didn't depict that. But I liked that aspect of the story too. And the other brothers, Rhys and Sebastian, caught my attention. Again, I thought the characterization was excellent.

Overall, a fun and different read. I will definitely check out Ms. Love's other books.

Kathy, I forgot to tell you how much I enjoyed Christian's 12 steps. You redeemed him well, and make me want to visit the nearest trailer park and kareoke bar. Ooops, I did that one, didn't I? Can't wait on the next brother! Keep typing:)

3 out of 5 stars Not as Good as the First Book.......2006-08-04

I was I little disappointed in this book. It wasn't deep enought for me. If you compare it to her first book, it just didn't have the drama and it just seemed like it was missing something that I can't put my finger on.

I would still read this book. It was a good a book. It got three stars from me because I was expecting it to be an even greater book. Looking forward to the third book in her series.

2 out of 5 stars Capable writing but not much here.......2006-05-31

Christian Young is desperately trying to be human. He's got a blog where he recounts his strides, and he's got a "becoming human" list posted on his refrigerator. He doesn't even bite people any more--he picks up expired blood at the blood bank. Still, he is a vampire, with all the advantages, and drawbacks of that lifestyle. Unfortunately, he's already made too many mistakes--mistakes that can never be forgiven. Although he's rich, he's living in a trailer park as part of his attempt to flee from his evil past.

Jolee Dugan is trailer trash. She's trying to make something of herself though, and owns a bar that once, and maybe in the future, features Karaoke, but her drug-abusing brother keeps hitting her up for money and an ex-boyfriend also looks to be causing trouble. When her brother pulls a knife on her, her sexy neighbor Christian show sup, disarms him, and then insults her. Jolee isn't surprised by the insult--but she doesn't need it and vows to have nothing to do with Christian. Still, when he almost runs her down with his car, the two seem thrust together.

Author Kathy Love delivers the Cinderella myth with a vampire serving as both fairy godmother and Prince Charming. Ultra-rich Christian wants nothing more than to take Jolee to nice places, give her nice things, help attract lots of customers to her bar where he serves as a waiter for free, and ultimately to provide her with the best sex she's ever had--or ever imagined a woman could have (extra-large condoms only, please). Although he's tortured by his past, he knows that he's found what he'd always imagined he would never know--love.

Love starts with a cute premise--a vampire working on a 12-step program, but doesn't really deliver on the humor. Christian may have been hard and evil once, but he's pretty much a push-over in this story. And Jolee can't decide whether she's independent or shattered. Her reaction to being discovered while making out with Christian just outside a fancy restaurant, for example, is annoying rather than cute. The issue of Christian's missing fangs really should be the source of either great humor or great angst--but Love glosses over the problem and solves it by the magic of writing it away rather than through some magic that actually flows from the story.

Readers who just can't get enough of the sexy vampire/humor story may want to check out this series. Love's writing is capable and the 12-step program has potential. Those who aren't completely addicted to the subgenre, though, may want to give this one a pass.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, sexy vampire story.......2006-05-01

This is the story of the second brother in the series. If you are like me, and you loved Rhys in the first story, you will LOVE Christian in this one. I can't wait for Seabastian's story, now!! You will love this vampire family every bit as much as Lynsay Sands vampire series. If you need a break from some of the more "darker" vampire stories, than look no further. Plenty of steamy, sexy vampires, and loads of humor.

                            Book Description

Until now, China has been scarcely represented in the burgeoning comparative literature on pilgrimage. This volume remedies that omission, discussing the interaction between pilgrims and sacred sites from the tenth century to the present. From the perspectives of literature, art, history, religion, politics, and anthropology, the essays focus on China's most famous pilgrimage mountains as well as lesser known sites.

"~The Dakota King series is a series aimed for young adolescents, with a feeling of high adventure. Dakota King could really be most accurately compared with the main character to the television show "The Pretender", whereas the books give the notion the Dakota King can do pretty much anything and everything. He's like Sherlock Holmes in terms of detective skills and Indiana Jones in terms of adventuring."~ definate "participatory" theme to them as the book gives you full page clues and revealing the culprit at the end of a book via a full page picture of the bad guy and a description of how DK solved the mystery, almost making the books feel like a game. But what do you expect from educational books aimed at adolescents? character than can do anything" you find so often in comic books that I discovered. And there's that fact that Dakota King and his partner, Longh Gonh, just have damn cool names. If you know an adventure/mystery fan around 9 to 13 years of age...they might like it.
