Being Local Worldwide: ABB and the Challenge of Global Management
Manufacturer: Cornell University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0801436508 |
Book Description
Fortune called Asea Brown Boveri, the giant multinational corporation created in 1987, "the most successful cross-border merger since Royal Dutch linked up with Britain's Shell in 1907." The coming together of two longtime national champions in the electrotechnical industry, Sweden's ASEA and Switzerland's Brown Boveri, marked the birth of a company with truly global aspirations, one whose apparent genius for combining strong central planning with local autonomy for its plants has made it a trendsetter. An international team of researchers assesses the dynamic interplay of the forces of convergence and diversity present in ABB. Together they examine the actual workings of this multinational--in order to learn to what degree the corporate strategies are achieved in its plants. Based on a multilevel organizational study, their book compares seven plants in six countries on three continents.

Tradeoffs or Synergies?: Agricultural Intensification, Economic Development and the Environment
Manufacturer: CABI ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0851994350 |
Book Description
The need for increased food production, enhanced economic growth and poverty reduction , while at the same time achieving environmental sustainability, is an issue of growing importance. This book addresses the linkages and tradeoffs involved in solving such key challenges. Some of the approaches taken are conceptual and theoretical, while others report on specific empirical cases in which linked economic, biophysical and policy models have been used to generate analytical (often quantitative) estimates of tradeoffs. Other approaches highlight institutional and policy issues involved in trying to achieve multiple social goals simultaneously. Empirical applications to areas throughout the developing world are included.

Transport Modeling in Hydrogeochemical Systems (Interdisciplinary Applied Mathematics)
J.David Logan Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387952764 |
Book Description
This book develops the basic ideas of transport models in hydrogeology, including diffusion-dispersion processes, advection, and adsorption or reaction. While balancing the mathematical and physical concepts, it is written in a scientific pedagogical style that is accessible to graduate students and researchers in applied mathematics, the geosciences, civil engineering, and other environmental sciences. The book is organized into six chapters that focus on the diffusion equation, the transport of contaminants and other solutes through porous media, the existence of traveling wave fronts in such systems, filtration theory, the kinematics and dynamics of ground water transport, and the flow and reactions in permeable rocks. Analytic methods for both elementary linear and nonlinear partial differential equations are discussed in detail. Appendices develop numerical methods for partial differential equations, including the method of lines and finite difference methods, and numerical methods for inverting Laplace transforms. Exercises are interspersed throughout the book and over one hundred and twenty references are cited. The book serves as an excellent text or supplementary reading in courses in applied mathematics, contaminant hydrology, ground water modeling, or hydrogeology.

Electroweak Symmetry Breaking: The Bottom-Up Approach (Springer Tracts in Modern Physics)
Wolfgang Kilian Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387400974 |
Book Description
The mechanism responsible for the generation of the mass of an particle has emerged as one of the most urging questions in fundamental physics. The effective-theory approach provides the theoretical basis for a model-independent description of the effects sensitive to this mechanism and their impact on observables. This book systematically develops this method, relating the predictions of different physics scenarios in a unified treatment. It also contains a detailed discussion of the processes that can actually be observed, the status of calculations, methods to isolate the interesting signals, and expectations for the sensitivity of future collider experiments. The systematic bottom-up approach provides the appropriate framework for interpreting measurements that will be performed to better understand the physics of mass generation in the universe. No knowledge of quantum field theory is required other than familiarity with effective Lagrangians and Feynmann diagrams. This book will be useful for both theorists and experimentalists who are interested in the phenomenology of electroweak interactions.

Patterns of Symmetry Breaking (NATO Science Series II: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1402017456 |
Book Description
The concept of spontaneous symmetry breaking plays a fundamental role in contemporary physics. It is essential to descriptions of such phenomena as the presence of degenerate ground states, massless modes, and topological defects. Examples are abundant in condensed matter physics, atomic and particle physics, as well as in astrophysics and cosmology. The book contains comprehensive, instructive reviews of significant aspects of the physics of spontaneous symmetry breaking. The emphasis is on topological defects: their appearance after phase transitions and the consequences of their presence. The most attractive feature of the book is that it embraces phenomena belonging to traditionally distinct branches of physics, such as the low temperature physics, liquid crystals, particle physics and cosmology. Both experimental and theoretical physics are represented. The unity and coherence of the underlying concepts is illustrated by an enormous variety of physical phenomena. As such, the book will interest any professional physicist working in modern physics.

Symmetry Breaking (Lecture Notes in Physics)
Franco Strocchi Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540735925 |
Book Description
This new edition of Prof. Strocchi's well received primer on rigorous aspects of symmetry breaking presents a more detailed and thorough discussion of the mechanism of symmetry breaking in classical field theory in relation with the Noether theorem. Moreover, the link between symmetry breaking without massless Goldstone bosons in Coulomb systems and in gauge theories is made more explicit in terms of the delocalized Coulomb dynamics. Furthermore, the chapter on the Higgs mechanism has been significantly expanded with a non-perturbative treatment of the Higgs phenomenon, at the basis of the standard model of particle physics, in the local and in the Coulomb gauges. Last but not least, a subject index has been added and a number of misprints have been corrected. From the reviews of the first edition:
The notion of spontaneous symmetry breaking has proven extremely valuable, the problem is that most derivations are perturbative and heuristic. Yet mathematically precise versions do exist, but are not widely known. It is precisely the aim of his book to correct this unbalance. - It is remarkable to see how much material can actually be presented in a rigorous way (incidentally, many of the results presented are due to Strocchi himself), yet this is largely ignored, the original heuristic derivations being, as a rule, more popular. - At each step he strongly emphasizes the physical meaning and motivation of the various notions introduced [...] a book that fills a conspicuous gap in the literature, and does it rather well. It could also be a good basis for a graduate course in mathematical physics. It can be recommended to physicists as well and, of course, for physics/mathematics libraries. J.-P. Antoine, Physicalia 28/2, 2006
Strocchi's main emphasis is on the fact that the loss of symmetric behaviour requires both the non-symmetric ground states and the infinite extension of the system. ¦It is written in a pleasant style at a level suitable for graduate students in theoretical physics. While mathematically proper, it is not forbidding for a physics readership; the author is always aware this subject is a branch of physics. It should make profitable reading for many theoretical physicists.
L.H. Ryder, J. Phys. A, 38 (2005) 9719-9730
In these notes the author explores the phenomenon of spontaneous symmetry breaking as it arises in classical and quantum systems. Despite many accounts in popular textbooks and a widespread belief, the phenomenon is rather subtle, requires an infinite set of degrees of freedom and an advanced mathematical setting of the system under investigation. [...] The mathematically oriented graduate student will certainly benefit from this thorough, rigorous and detailed investigation. G. Roepstorff, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1075, 2006

Symmetry Breaking for Compact Lie Groups (Memoirs of the American Mathematical Society)
Mike Field Manufacturer: Amer Mathematical Society ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0821804359 |
Book Description
This work comprises a general study of symmetry breaking for compact Lie groups in the context of equivariant bifurcation theory. The author starts by extending the theory developed by Field and Richardson for absolutely irreducible representations of finite groups to general irreducible representations of compact Lie groups. In particular, the author allows for branches of relative equilibria and phenomena such as the Hopf bifurcation. The author also presents a general theory of determinacy for irreducible Lie group actions along the lines previously described by Field in Equivariant Bifurcation Theory and Symmetry Breaking. In the main result of this work, it is shown that branching patterns for generic equivariant bifurcation problems defined on irreducible representations persist under perturbations by sufficiently high order non-equivariant terms.
The author gives applications of this result to normal form computations yielding, for example, equivariant Hopf bifurcations and shows how normal form computations of branching and stabilities are valid when taking account of the non-normalized tail.

sexuality and desire.......2000-05-21
Behn's novel is not only an exploration of the sexual politics of the socety in which she lived in, but also, an examination of the notions of gender and identity. The exchange of love letters between Sylvia and Philander allows readers to sense the intimacy between the two couple, but most importanly, it allows readers to follow the transformantion of Sylvia's identity from lady to whore. Behn conveys the double standard that exists in her society, and perhaps our society as well. Philander, after his lover affair and scandal is still a lord, but unfortunately for Sylvia, once 'undone' is no longer a lady.
This book was useful in helping me understand the sexual politics of seventeenth-century English society.
