Book Description
The Benchmarking Workbook will do exactly what the title suggests make it easier for you to put theory into practice. It is a "do-it-yourself" guide to benchmarking. Benchmarking methods are simple, easy to grasp, and universal everyone can do it! But many people suffer from unclear frames of reference, impossible deadlines, inadequate budgets, unexplained expectations; even when these obstacles are overcome, the greatest danger is becoming swamped by detail. This is where the Benchmarking Workbook will prove to be a major ally. If you are on a benchmarking team, you will find that this workbook is a tool to help get at the practical aspects; aspects with which books of theory just cannot cope. It includes
- examples from actual cases
- self-diagnostic "what to do" sections
- forms, checklists and questionnaires
The Benchmarking Workbook helps you
- organize your research
- clarify your thinking
- prioritize your findings
The Benchmarking Workbook has been developed by Karlöf and Partners. It is the practical companion to the original book Benchmarking: A Signpost to Excellence in Quality and Productivity by Bengt Karlöf and Svante Östblom, published by John Wiley & Sons.
Customer Reviews:
Not a Bad Book, but . . ........2000-02-08
This workbook is filled with sample forms for a variety of uses. Unfortunately, it's a little sketchy as to the applicability of each form. The book is intended to be a companion to Karlof's prior work, "Benchmarking: A Signpost to Excellence and Productivity". The biggest disappointment is the price. The book has a text book price -- it's a paperback! At that price you would at least expect forms that are closer to letter sized. Based on the pricing of the paperback edition, the hardback must be over $200. This book is hardly a value.
Book Description
All populations fluctuate stochastically, creating a risk of extinction that does not exist in deterministic models, with fundamental consequences for both pure and applied ecology. This book provides the most comprehensive introduction to stochastic population dynamics, combining classical background material with a variety of modern approaches, including new and previously unpublished results by the authors, illustrated with examples from bird and mammal populations, and insect communities.

Book Description
This is the first comprehensive treatise that deals with the formation of blood vessels during embryonic development. Assembly of the Vasculature and its Regulation presents our most current understanding of vascular angiogenesis and vasculogenesis at the molecular scale. The book covers the events and regulatory factors that characterize vessel formation during the prenatal and perinatal periods. It describes the proliferation, migration and differentiation of angioblasts, their assembly into vascular tubes, the subsequent growth of these structures and the addition of medial and adventitial components to form the functional network that is the vascular system. The first half of the book details the major issues concerned with vessel formation and its regulation (growth factors and their receptors, extracellular matrix, adhesion molecules, and smooth muscle differentiation). The second half covers vascular development in a number of organs (heart, central nervous system, kidney, lung, and placenta). The book is an important reference work for all students and researchers working in vascular biology.

Book Description
The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) introduced a criterion starting with their 1992-1993 site visits that "Students must demonstrate a knowledge of the application of statistics to engineering problems." Since most engineering curricula are filled with requirements in their own discipline, they generally do not have time for a traditional two semesters of probability and statistics. Attempts to condense that material into a single semester often results in so much time being spent on probability that the statistics useful for designing and analyzing engineering/scientific experiments is never covered. In developing a one-semester course whose purpose was to introduce engineering/scientific students to the most useful statistical methods, this book was created to satisfy those needs.
- Provides the statistical design and analysis of engineering experiments & problems
- Presents a student-friendly approach through providing statistical models for advanced learning techniques
- Covers essential and useful statistical methods used by engineers and scientists

Customer Reviews:
Decent Substance but Overpriced and Flimsy.......2006-11-05
This book is an alright book for an Intro Electronics course with professorial guidance. Simpson obviously has a lot of knowledge on the subject, so I don't really have a problem with that area. But it would have been nice to have a selected answers section. My biggest problems with this book have to do with the price and construction. The book cost way too much for a paperback. Besides that bit, mine fell apart the first day I got it! I suggest splitting Analog and Digital into two seperate books. This kind of stuff can get one upset...
THE reference book on electronics.......2004-11-30
I highly recommend Simpson's book. It provides clear, accurate information on all those things that we may have missed (or forgotten). His treatment of solid state devices is detailed, but accurate (too many other books gloss over the SS theory).
The only reason that I can't give it 5 stars is it's age. I would prefer an updated edition. If you have a copy, keep it.
A Professor's View of "Introductory Electronics...".......2003-08-22
As a second year undergraduate Biomedical Engineering student I used Simpson's text for my first Biomedical Instrumentation class at Duke University. At the time the professor told us that we would have a tough time with the book, but over time we would find that it was an outstanding reference and as our sophistication grew we would come to appraciate it more. That has certainly been the case!
As a professor now, teaching my own Biomedical Instrumentation class I still find this text to be the best on out there. It provides a thorough background on many of the key concepts of Electrical Engineering including AC and DC circuits, Fourier analysis, Semiconductor Physics, Transistors, Op Amps, Op Amp Ciucuits, Digital Logic, and even microprocessors. Some of this is admittedly dated, especially the digital sections, but the fundamentals are all there and I have not seen another book that covers so much, so clearly.
One of the great features of this text is its practical bent. There is a whole chapter on noise; describing phyical sources and some ways of dealing with probelms. There is also an excellent appendix describing various types of capacitors, inductors, and resistors. It answers great questions like: Should I use a ceramic capacitor in my design or an aluminum electrolytic?
Of the roughly 50 books on the shelf in my office, this is the one that is most commonly missing. I recommend this book as an excellent reference in an area where there are a lot of books available.

Book Description
First published in 1823, Hogg's powerful novel combines two stories that hauntingly echo each other, one set in Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders in the early 1820s, and the other set in the Highlands in 1746, the time of Culloden and its devastating aftermath. The Three Perils of Woman subversively challenges many of the attitudes and assumptions of the established elite of Hogg's day, for example by refusing to gloss over what it calls 'the disgrace of the British annals', the atrocities committed by the Duke of Cumberland's victorious army in the Highlands after Culloden. Likewise, in its story of the 1820s Hogg's novel questions prevailing social attitudes to prostitution and other matters. The Three Perils of Woman had an interested but shocked and hostile reception on its first publication, and this controversial text was omitted from all the nineteenth-century collected editions of Hogg's works. It remained out of print from the 1820s until its republication in 1995 in the new Stirling / South Carolina edition of Hogg published by Edinburgh University Press, on which the present edition is based. Since 1995 The Three Perils of Woman has come to be seen as a book of outstanding interest and importance.
Customer Reviews:
I'm About to Have a Nervous Breakdown.......2005-03-08
The very day I began reading this most excellent of tales, serendipity led me to this quote by Horace Walpole: "History is a romance that is believed; romance, a history that is not believed." While I find myself wanting to believe in Hogg's outlandish history, I cannot believe the sheer ridiculousness of the romantic tales as presented in The Three Perils of Woman. It seems quite clear to me that this is just as Hogg intended.
Who is this male Hogg, boldly attempting to present the female myth with such reckless abandon? Why do I feel as though I am being mocked? Perhaps females were not meant to read such an improper tale. This story could be easily screened on any current Soap Opera, with nary an eyelash batted. Was this the Beverly Hills 90210 of its day? I digress.
In Peril the First: Love, Gatty Bell is a rather naive 18 year-old who has discovered the perils of first love. As Gatty's miserable tale unfolds, I can hear her screaming the lyrics to Black Flag's "Nervous Breakdown." I do feel her plight. She is such a sad and silly girl in love. Oh what a simpering fool this Gatty is! Maybe it's me that's screaming those lyrics.... I want her to SNAP OUT OF IT! Her father also wants her to snap out of it, and so attempts to arrange a marriage with her oafish, though well-off cousin Richard Rickleton. Clever Hogg; is he laughing at us, or with us? Hogg's characters are rich with passion, bravery, melodrama, and often, sheer idiocy.
Hogg's narrative flows along in satirically charming roundabouts, always leading back to the central theme of woman. Here we find her strengths and weaknesses, her wiles and woes. He brands her liar, coquette, wife, concubine, mother, servant, nursemaid, unassuming, simple, heroine. Hogg is an extremist who writes with an underlying current of condescension. Either Hogg, the man, is a very talented humourist, or a bitter man who seeks redemption. This novel reads as an intimate recounting of people he has known, and perhaps peers he wishes he did not know. Sometimes we get the feeling that those characteristics he pokes fun at most, are those inhabited by his real-life compatriots.
In the many Scots-spoken narratives throughout the text, I find subtle as well as blatant hints of rancor towards privileged establishment. As it should be. Something in this base treatment of language leads the reader down a path to acceptance of the absurd. These Scots-language passages in particular, provide quaint vehicles for Hogg's ideals to be driven home. They provide the reader with pathos and a deeper interest in the characters.
Hogg presents such incongruous positioning of the "classes" to hilarious -- and tragic -- conclusion. The premise of so many misunderstandings in the games of love, to such disastrous ends, is sad in the extreme. The plight of these men and women would be sadder still, were it not for the quick wit of the author. I find myself laughing at the most inopportune times. Hogg attempts to elevate the lower class, but manages to prove that life has always been bloated with human prejudice and suppression.
I find a similarity in the presentation of the female characters as opposed to the males. Hogg presents the women as fawning, fainting, fluttering, incessantly longing, lying, and laying! Did I mention laundering? They swoon as they scheme to be redeemed and revered by the men, despite all transgressions. These women always manage to come out as heroines. Sally, the true heroine of this tale, is the biggest loser due to her sin of jealousy. Their is no redemption for Sally... and I might have found comfort in the end, had Davie Duff taken her ears. Hogg does not grant me this wish, which I find quite upsetting.
Male characters are no less maligned than females, under Hoggs' severe and critical eye. They appear as buffoons, cheats, heroes, drunkards, and dimwits. Suspicious and stupid, compassionate and forgiving. The Rich Rickleton (cousin Dick) character is so unbelievable, he must certainly be patterned after a real man. Cousin Dick was my favorite character, along with that of Davie Duff, the grave-digger. One cannot help but wish that Daniel Bell, in all his infinite wisdom, is a slight parody of Hogg's own father. It is the men in this story who make us laugh loudest.
I must fondly conclude that James Hogg was a punk. He did it his way. With little sense of decorum, and a rebellious bent, Hogg manages to debase almost everybody he writes about in The Three Perils of Woman. I want to believe he just doesn't care, but Hogg's writing is too witty, sometimes biting, and not at all as aloof as he would have us believe. I sense a structured non-compliance, as well as a haughty disregard for something; perhaps bad feelings against the writings of his contemporaries. It is this underlying current of mockery which often overshadows the subject matter. Woman and her perils become secondary to this subversive theme. Hogg's version of historic romance is a lesson in what some might deem abject reality; others, adverse futility of attempting to understand the workings of the human mind. Though Hogg did not create the historical romance genre, he seems determined to push it to the limit with each plot twist and turn.
