      Book Description

This text offers the ideal approach for economics and business students seeking to understand the mathematics relevant to them. Each chapter demonstrates basic mathematical techniques, while also explaining the economic analysis and business context where each is used. By following the worked examples and tackling the practice problems, students will discover how to use and apply each of these techniques. Now in its second edition, the text features expanded summaries of economic analysis, new sections on matrix algebra and linear programming, and additional demonstrations of economics applications. Along with these new features, the book continues to separate mathematical methods and economics applications into discrete sections, allowing the student to learn the mathematics needed, or to proceed immediately to the economics examples.Although the book is complete in itself, it also encourages students to develop their understanding of both mathematics and economics by using the interactive CD-ROM in the back of the book. This CD-ROM includes the award-winning MathEcon software, Excel files, Powerpoint slides, all definitions and 'remember ' boxes, and additional practice questions. In its flexibility, comprehensiveness, and readable format, this text will continue to serve as an essential resource for students in this area.

      Book Description

Written for first-year undergraduates on economics and business courses, this book offers the ideal approach to understanding the mathematics relevant to them. It sets out all the basic mathematical techniques and explains the economic analysis or business context where each is used.

The book is structured with mathematical methods and economics applications in separate sections. This allows students either first to learn the mathematics needed in a particular chapter or to proceed immediately to the economics examples, depending on their mathematical backgrounds.

Although the book is complete in itself, it also encourages students to develop their understanding of both mathematics and economics by using the interactive screens on the MathEcon CD-ROM. These screens are taken from the award-winning WinEcon courseware.

A 'Virtual Workbook' supports the book with a range of interactive exercises.

5 out of 5 stars Very Clear and Straight-forward.......2003-06-04

Of all the books I've looked at to help me review mathematics for my economics PhD (it's been ten years since I did that stuff in college) this book is by far the best I've found. It's written very clearly and things are explained nice and slowly. The problem I have with most books in this genre is that they overwhelm you with zillions of equations and give me a migraine. This book, on the other hand, actually explains things.

I don't know anything about the Cd Rom because I borrowed this book from the library and the Cd Rom wasn't in it. But, I can't say as I really missed it.

          Book Description

In the Ankole region the overriding concern since the colonial period has been the commercialization of livestock production through the introduction of commercial ranching. The lack of success in this endeavor is due not only to the political and economic crises over the years, but to a failure to understand the underlying bottlenecks faced by the various categories of cattle keepers. In pastoral Karamoja the proliferation of firearms has had a profound impact on the organization of herd management. The inherent military organization of the herding cooperatives forced the Ngakarimojong people to adapt not only to changes in their physical environment but also to regional factors. This study examines the two issues that figure large in contemporary Ugandan agricultural and political studies-ranching and pastoral institutions where the cattle move with seasons and droughts.

          Book Description

Designed for your two-semester combined course, the new edition of anatomy and physiology is written to allow instructors the ability to accomplish one goal: to teach anatomy and physiology while fostering the skill of problem solving. Through learning how to solve problems and think critically, students learn A&P based on two themes: the relationship between structure and function, and homeostasis. An effective anatomy and physiology text should involve your students. It should invite them into the subject matter with a clear and interesting foundation, not intimidate or overwhelm. It should stimulate curiosity, promote critical thinking, and perhaps most importantly, it should teach students how to apply their knowledge throughout their professional careers. The fifth edition of Anatomy & Physiology accomplishes all of this and more.

          3 out of 5 stars A&P.......2007-10-03

Unfortunately the class that I bought this text for is only for the Physiology side and I don't use the Anatomy content at all. As for the Physiology content I think that they do a very good job of explaining complex concepts in a simple student-friendly way.

3 out of 5 stars Professor thought all wrong!.......2006-06-15

Although my professor thought most of the information in the textbook was wrong, it was a great guide to use both online and in class. Great illustrations!

          2 out of 5 stars Not Recommended.......2006-05-21

I bought this book for my Anatomy and Physiology 1 class in college. It was the required book for the class and the first semester we were using it. Upon going through we found numerous problems with information in the book. For example, there is an illustration of a reflex on page 419 and the foot is on backwards (according to the direction of the spinal cord). This is only one of many, many small problems with the book.

I do however give it two stars because the website accompanying the book gives a lot of explanations for each chapter with videos to better see what the chapter talks about.

If you're getting this book for independent study I recommend something else because this book has a lot of information that is wrong and you won't know to correct it. If you have a teacher who can point out the little qualms with this book, go for it but buy at your own risk.

This text is the value-priced, intelligent choice for your nonmajors or combined courses. At 800 pages in length and in crisp, one-color, it is less expensive, totally customizable, and comes with a full-color teaching package. Kimball's discussion--clear, concise, and written at an appropriate level--features complete explanations of key concepts and current content. Traditional topics are discussed from the perspective of gene control and analysis. Genetics--with an emphasis on molecular genetics--begins the text and continues as a unifying theme throughout.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent book for premed students.......2001-01-06

For someone who is initially exposed to anatomy and physiology (even basic histology and embryology!), it's quite readable and understable. It even makes this complicated subject much fun. Colorful graphics and diagrams help describe concepts and processes more precisely and interestingly. You'll love physiology after reading it. "No, I don't think so" will probably be your answer when your classmates comment that physiology is too hard and dull. Fairly economical purchase of a combined anatomy and physiology text.

5 out of 5 stars Very practice book............2000-06-19

This book is very practice for students who study medicine (anatomy and physiology)... Students will find detailed information about physiology and anatomy of human body (brain, heart, kidney... and about intracellular transfer, ATP...) really, it's very good book!

This text-specific Art Notebook is an ancillary to assist students in note taking during lectures. The notebook includes all of the art from the textbook. On each page, there are one or two figures reproduced from the textbook. Each figure also corresponds to one of the transparencies available to instructors who adopt this textbook. The intention is to place the digital or transparency art in front of the students (via the notebook) as the instructor uses them during lectures. The advantage to the student is that he/she will be able to see all labels clearly, and take meaningful notes without having to make hurries sketches of the figure.

4 out of 5 stars A teachers guide to genetics.......2000-03-29

One of m friends were showing me this book when we were talking about genetics and stuff. I became intrested of it and borrowed it for a couple of weeks. This book led me into the world of genetic principles, possibilities and etics in no time. The language is in a medium level, quit easy to understand even for a swedish teacher. It is perfect if you study fundamental genetics or want to now what genetics is all about.

                      Book Description

For many of us, the physical sciences are as obscure as the phenomena they explain. We see the wonders of nature but miss the symmetry beneath, framed as it is in ever stranger symbols and concepts. Roger Newton's accessible account of how physicists understand the world allows the expert and novice alike to explore both the mysteries of the universe and the beauty of the science that gives shape to the unseeable.

In What Makes Nature Tick? we find engaging discussions of solitons and superconductors, quarks and strings, phase space, tachyons, time, chaos, and indeterminacy, as well as the investigations that have led to their elucidation. But Roger Newton does not limit this volume to late-breaking discoveries and startling facts. He presents physics as an expanding intellectual structure, a network of very human ideas that stretches back three hundred years from our present frontier of knowledge. Where does our unidirectional sense of time come from? What makes a particle elementary? How can forces be transmitted through empty space? In addition to providing these answers, and a host of others at the very heart of physics, Newton shows us how physicists formulate the questions--a process in which intuition, imagination, and aesthetics have a powerful influence.

5 out of 5 stars What Makes Nature Tick?.......2002-11-18

What Makes Nature Tick? written by Roger G. Newton is a book first and foremost about physics, but the physical sciences do play an intergral part.

Now, that you know the book is about physics, don't shy away from it as it is written in a way that the lay person can understand. This is a book the physical tinkers and problems solvers will like. This book shows the reader the imagination, intuition, and elucidation of the author when it come to this book. He makes the reader feel at home as he egages us in a discussion of superconductors, quarks, strings, and phase space.

From tachyons, time, and chaos we are on a journey of questions posed and answers given to some of the easier questions, while some of the more difficult are left to our imagination and the author's as well. But, I think the author will be able to answer those question well before I could.

There are mysteries in the universe that need exploring, this book brings a surprisingly powerful influence toward that goal. The Contents of this book are as followed: Science, Mathematics, and Imagination; Chaos and the Ghost of Laplace; Time's Arrow; Forces acting through Space; Waves: Standing, traveling, and Solitary; Tachyons, the Aging of Twins, and Causality; Spooky Action at a Distance; What is an Elementary Particle?; Collective Phenoomena; and The beauty and Power of Symmetry.

As you can see, this little tome covers a lot of physics, but it is presented in a why that will keep you very interested. This being said, you have to have a scientific leaning and a liking for science to appreciate the book. What I found interesting outside of this book is the further reading section.

I enjoyed this book and it explains some of the new science that we are getting from observation.

                            Book Description

The familiar musings of Howard Spiro extol the humanitarian spirit in life and medicine, even as new technologies dominate. These 45 essays, published in Science & Medicine from 1994 to 2003, are collected together in a handsome volume. Dr. Spiro's essays examine the state of medicine, society, education, patients, technology, practice, and eating (he's a gastroenterologist!), incorporating allusions to history, philosophy, and literature and flavored with flashes of Dr. Spiro's noted wit.
