3 out of 5 stars Useful overview of the global auto industry.......2005-02-22

Author Jonathan Mantle is a multinational, who "divides his time between New York, London, and the Far East." His book gives us a crisp overview of the global auto industry, but mostly covers post World War II developments to 1994. He focuses on several themes. One is the relationship between Nazi Germany and the later role of various participants in the auto industry. His story begins with the development of what became the Volkwagen. Dr. Porsche and Louis Renault were possible Nazi collaborators. Both Ford and General Motors continued to operate their plants in Germany during World War II and were major suppliers of trucks and half-tracks to the Third Reich. GM's Opel subsidiary also made engines for Messerschmidts including Germany's jet engine.

Another theme is the development of "people's cars," smaller, affordable automobiles for the masses-especially as Europe recovered from World War II. The VW Beetle was the most successful of these, but others include Fiat's Nuova Cinquecento, Citroen's Deux Chevaux (2CV), the Morris Mini Minor, Ford of Britain's Cortina, East Germany's Trabant, and Korea's Hyundai Pony. He mentions the Ford Pinto and the Chevy Vega, but generally covers only selected aspects of the US story.

A third theme is the introduction of auto manufacturing technology to developing countries. The story of Japan, Korea, and the Soviet Union are told in detail. There is some mention of efforts throughout the globe.

Finally, Mantle describes the labor struggles especially in Europe. The demise of the British auto industry was caused by strong unions and inflexible work rules. Similar stories are told of Italy. Successful efforts to reach workable union compromises in the US and Germany are also described.

Inevitably a complete chronology of industry sinks into details of various companies' marketing efforts. The latter half of the book tends to get bogged down, though the author makes a valiant effort to focus on major developments. But this leaves a story without a climax. The dialogue continues to 1994 and ends with a brief epilogue.

This is a useful overview of the global auto business with the history of major players. The author does a reasonable job of hitting the high points. References. Select bibliography. Index.

3 out of 5 stars A Great Potential, Nevertheless a Great Fall.......1999-10-11

I liked the book - a lot. But there were too mant questions left unaswered. Frankly, if Mr.Mantle published all the materials as a different book that he would have collected for writing this, that may answer a lot. In short, he cut too much out of a great length of fascinating and valuable information.

Please, do write it again, or revise this book fully. I will buy that. For the time being, this book is just a reference of chaos. And a damn good one.

1 out of 5 stars Pretty poor stuff.......1999-10-04

Poor research, poor writing, poorly organised

1 out of 5 stars A book tainted with racists comments and research errors.......1998-05-18

His historical research is pretty poor when in the page 92 he wrote: "In 1967, President Salinas of Mexico had asked Volskwagenwerk to build the Mexican peoples' car".

In 1967, the mexican president was Díaz Ordaz, and Salinas took office until 1988.

And in the same page too, when talking about that the Volskwagen succeeded as a masses car in Africa and Latin-America he writes :

"...the Beetle had become the vehicle of freedom and mobility for races whom Hitler and Speer would have damned as Untermenschen (subhuman) and consigned to Nacht und Nebel (night and fog = gas chamber)"

What's the point of this comment Mr Mantle?

Through all the book the author seems to be interested in remarking the Nazi background of Henry Ford, the Ford Co. and GM as a way of celebrating them, it seems.

1 out of 5 stars Great potential, but poor follow through.......1997-11-07

I heard the author, Jonathon Mantle on a radio show and became quite excited by the prospect of reading his book. It seemed like an accessible yet critical analysis of the car industry from a decidely non-"Car and Driver" enthusiasts point of view. Unfortunately, it turns out the entire book is just a gloss, very short chapters that are almost contentless. I felt cheated. Important subjects are mentioned and then left, some longer chapters are on mundane issues such as industrial sabotage while really important issues such as the collusion of car and chemical industries to destroy public transportation are only briefly noted. The saving grace was a very good apendix and bibliography that should have been used more in the body of the book. I thought the whole thing a very weak effort. If I could I would return the book to Amazon for a refund.

          Book Description

Drawing on a database of more than one hundred anti-poverty interventions in 47 countries, Targeting of Transfers in Developing Countries provides a general review of experiences with methods used to target interventions in transition and developing countries. Written for policymakers and program managers in developing countries, in donor agencies, and in NGOs who have responsibility for designing interventions that reach the poor, it conveys what targeting options are available, what results can be expected as well as information that will assist in choosing among them and in their implementation. Key messages are:

          * While targeting "works" - the median program transfers 25 percent more to the poor than would a universal allocation - targeting performance around the world is highly variable.

          * Means testing, geographic targeting, and self-selection based on a work requirement are the most robustly progressive methods. Proxy means testing, community-based selection of individuals and demographic targeting to children show good results on average, but with considerable variation. Demographic targeting to the elderly, community bidding, and self-selection based on consumption show limited potential for good targeting.

          * There is no single preferred method for all types of programs or all country contexts. Successful targeting depends critically on how a method is implemented.

The CD-ROM includes the database of interventions, an annotated bibliography (PDF) and Spanish and Russian translations of the book (PDFs).

                                      * Provides practical solutions to the challenge of modeling and analyzing rock masses
                                      * Consolidates a wealth of previously published technical papers on the subject and introduces previously unseen material

This authoritative title is a key reference for any Geo-engineer. Rock masses differ considerably from man-made materials, and their properties can vary with location, direction and time. As a result there is a critical need to capture these variations via modeling and analysis.

Zhu and Zhao provide an expert introduction to the techniques and analytical methods needed for studying underground excavations in fractured rock masses. The book brings together previously published and new material to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date reference.

                                        Book Description

This book is a companion volume to its predecessor, A Monte Carlo Primer, A Practical Approach to Radiation Transport. As indicated by its title, this volume provides solutions to the exercises in the Primer. However, it also provides a great deal more. Each of the exercises is discussed in detail and, where appropriate, is repeatedly solved using a variety of techniques and approaches. Many of the exercises are deceptively simple, and the reader is led through the thought processes that unravel this simplicity and show the depth of insight that can be obtained by careful analysis. Emphasis is placed on offering the reader a clear and thorough development of the knowledge and insights that can be gained by solving each problem and, as emphasized in the Primer, on the need to confirm that the particle tracking that is the basis of each candidate solution has adequately sampled the regions of phase space that are important to the result. This volume is a useful and valuable companion to the Primer and offers the reader the opportunity to pursue the topics presented in the Primer to greater depth than was possible in that volume. A compact disc containing all of the software presented in both the Primer and the Solutions is included in this volume for the convenience of the user.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the Price.......2003-07-31

Take it for what it is: a quick summary for everything about Shakespeare. Although this is not an in-depth summarization of all Shakespeare's works, The Everything Shakespeare Book gives the reader the gist of sonnets, background, and individual play summaries. For the price, this is beneficial resource for anyone who wants a little information about Shakespeare and the Elizabethan periods. For instance, there is a discussion on the significance of the sonnets and speculation about whom they were written for. There are also some generalities about travel, costumes, entertainment, theatre opposition and rivals of Shakespeare during this time period.

There are a few problems with the book.
Some of the details are a bit vague and some of the "essentials" are relatively unessential (Rubie should have called this section "tidbits" instead). There is a section on Shakespearean words and their present day definitions (aye means "yes", etc), but it would have been more effective to include tougher Shakespeare words.

The most significant part is the play summaries and character lists (from these plays). Although this section is not complete in thoroughly characterizing any one play, they are certainly useful for a reader just wanting a quick summary of the work. After each play description, there is a quick caption that discusses elements such as where and when the play was first performed and how it ranks among other plays, as well as a brief commentary about the play. Finally, the section finishes with a list of popular quotes within each drama.

Overall, this is recommended for anyone wanting to brush up on a little Shakespeare or wanting some insight into this time period.

                                        3 out of 5 stars Survey of Shakespeare - for 10th graders.......2003-02-09

This is a pleasantly written introduction to Shakespeare - life, times, and works. Sort of a Shakespeare Survey for 10th graders. A somewhat oversized paperback, its 304pp are printed in large type with colored emphasis, presumably to attract the younger reader. In a relatively few words, "Everything" succeeds rather well in surveying everything and leaving a newcomer primed to explore more deeply in the mind and works of the great author. There are appendices on further readings, resources, and web sites, but these are weakly annotated, so a beginner will need additional guidance.

The "Everything" style is to highlight certain sections as "Essentials" and others as "Facts." I can't imagine that the "Essentials" often reflect what a school teacher is going to be quizzing, let alone what serious students would call a central issue. I also notice that the "Facts" are sometimes highly unfactual ("Some scholars feel the sonnets are..."). "Facts" is a daring words to employ anywhere in the realm of Shakespeare. Hamlet could have been speaking most candidly and fittingly for Shakespearean authors: "Believe none of us!" (i.e., In God we trust - for the rest we check footnotes). On the other hand, this mostly un-documented survey does at least acknowledge many of the debates that remain unfinished about the times, the man, and his works.

Overall, it's not a bad compromise between readability and honest scholarly equivocation in a book for young bard novices. If they continue on with Shakespeare they'll have time enough to be disabused of the "facts" they've learned.

Brief introductions to each play fill out the second half the book after the first has given you chapters on Shakespeare's World, The Elizabethan Stage, Did Shakespeare Write Shakespeare, Shakespeare's Rivals (nine discussed), Elizabethan English, and The Sonnets/Poems.
