The book should enlighten those equating the green movement with adverse economic impact. It simply doesnt have to be the case. Companies like Shell and Dow are realizing, the early birds will gain serious competitive advantages when adopting "cooler" operating philosophies including: lower operating costs in general, increased productivity, and lower carbon costs when they ultimately get implemented. Numerous verified examples are provided that cement what should be a common sense belief that reduction of waste (all types) lead to leaner more competitive companies.

I approached my own boss with these ideas and received a chuckle in response. Its an uphill fight out there, hopefully the more people become informed, the easier it will be. This book is a great one to hand to a nay sayer. (I plan on sending a copy to both my boss and President Bush for Christmas)

By Stephen Corrick Reprinted with permission...Joseph J. Romm was an Assistant Secretary of theUS Department of Energy. He obviously learned his lessons well. Hisbook, Cool Companies, makes an overwhelming case: Not only willreducing greenhouse gases not hurt companies' ability to compete, the action of reducing greenhouse gases (and industrial energy waste generally) offers the single easiest productivity booster, and among the shortest payback periods of any available to American industry today.

Cool Companies offers insights into the detailed processes by which all company sites-from industrial giants like DuPont and 3M all the way down to individual apartment owners-have used greenhouse gas emission reduction to drive many more dollars to their bottom line.

The only question one is left with after Romm so effectively makes his case is why the coal and oil companies are playing Chicken Little and screaming that reducing greenhouse gases will hurt American business. Obviously, the only American businesses they are referring to must be their own. The Wall Street Journal and the American Chamber of Commerce would be well served to get the true picture and start representing the needs and interests of the majority of their customers-whose interests, at this point, are often diametrically opposed to those of the fossil fuel industry.

Run out and buy this book, before your competitors do.......1999-10-16

Romm has done a great service with this book. There are a lot of people telling us we must act on climate, and a lot of theory on how. Too often, it is abstract and esoteric -- Romm gives practical, easy to follow examples of how the best in class cut costs; cut carbon; and boosted productivity.

If you work anywhere in corporate management -- Whether you are the Chief Operating Officer, The Chief Financial Officer, the Plant Manager, or the Environmental Manager, you need to run out and buy this book, and then read it, before your competitors do.

You'll find case study after case study of how the best companies cut carbon. From building design, to the office environment, to industrial processes on the plant floor, this book tells -- often in the words of the managers themselves -- how they did what they did. Not only the technologies they chose, but how they sold other managers, developed creative financing strategies(often getting projects financed off ledger, out of future savings for example), and obtained credit for cutting other emissions.

If you are an environmentalist or a regulator facing the prospect of a climate treaty, the examples Romm outlines show why the arcane debate about the cost of cutting greenhouse gasses is flat out irrelevant. Cool Companies save money by becoming more efficent.

Bottom line? If you read only one book on cutting greenhouse gasses -- make it this one.

I had the good fortune of meeting Dr.Farb at a book signing, 2 weeks before I was asked to chair the 40th annual Lunar Rendezvous Festival which celebrates the accomplishments of NASA and the community that surrounds it. Using her book as the basis for my organizational structure, we have implemented the "zero budget" principle and have enjoyed early successes. I highly recommend this book to anyone planning a charity fund raiser. It truly shows you how to avoid the expense pitfalls of throwing a major venue.

The Good Advice from Experts in the Non-Profit Field.......2000-07-05

You probably won't be able to develop your entire fund raising plan from this book, but this is a good, tip filled start to creating one. Because the book is filled with advice from experts who have different focuses, there is a higher level of confidence that the advice comes from "been there, done that." It isn't someone who has written grants for 20 years suddenly writing about annual letter writing campaigns (trust me, different approaches are needed)...each person writes from their areas of strengths (and biographies are given so you know what those strengths are). The tone is positive, educational, professional, interesting and will point you in the right direction for more in depth information in areas of specific interest. My only quibble...some of the sections are stronger than others about providing bibliographies and worksheets. I bought this book 'hot off the presses' and I haven't regretted it.

Since its inception over thirty years ago, affirmative action has been a difficult and divisive issue. Many Americans see affirmative action as an effective and just mechanism for helping the nation become more unified; others perceive it as a contradiction of the principles that work and ability will be rewarded and that the colorblindness presumed to be underlying the civil rights movement should apply to everyone.

If a single American institution might have guided the country through the thicket of affirmative action, it is the U.S. Supreme Court. Yet, argues Lincoln Caplan, the actions of the Court have only created confusion for the lower courts and intensified discord in the country. Since 1978, when the Court handed down its best-known decision about affirmative action in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke, it has ruled in a dozen cases about the subject, but it has failed to speak with a clear voice. Not one decision has been unanimous, many have been decided by a single vote, and the rulings usually involve a clutch of puzzling, contradictory opinions.

Caplan explores the evolution of affirmative action law by the Supreme Court and demonstrates how this evolution is fundamentally at odds with the way that affirmative action has developed throughout America. I'm a teacher of Language Arts and this collection of Trevino's short stories was a hit with my at-risk readers. The first story ("The Fabulous Sinkhole") was witty and lighthearted, yet exposed the hidden realities of being in this world via the objects in and the subjects surrounding the sinkhole. The characters' voices sound as if they could live on your street; the dialogue is natural and lively. The rest of the stories in this collection follow the same formula as above but just get weirder and funnier. A great book for any young adult who doesn't like to read fiction, yet loves horror movies, comic books and stories about low-rider zombies returned from the dead to slash and burn cultural stereotypes.

A monument! For every caver just dreaming to go caving to Ja this is a must have. Tons and tons of information. Excellent work from Mr Fincham. This is a lives work. Only minor flaw: the many cavemaps have been redrawn to have a uniform style throughout the book resulting in a reduction of detail compared to the original map. But who cares ;)

This is a good book for people with a limited geology background. This was one of the sources that I used to write a 20 page paper, and found it very useful. It starts out talking about the formation of karst terrian and walks you right through the process of building structures in karst areas. Including site investigation and preperation. Is well worth the price if you are doing research.

Beginning over 10,000 years ago and continuing until the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500s, hunter and gatherer societies occupied the Edwards Plateau of central Texas. Archaeological studies over the past eighty years have reconstructed their subsistence, technology, and settlement patterns, but until now little information has been available on their burial practices, due to the scarcity of known burial sites. This detailed archaeological report describes the human skeletal remains, burial furnishings, and fauna recovered from Bering Sinkhole in Kerr County, the first carefully excavated hunter-gatherer burial site in central Texas. The remains in Bering Sinkhole were deposited from 7,500 to 2,000 years ago. Leland Bement's analysis reveals a growing elaboration in burial rituals during the period and also uncovers important data on the diet and health of the hunter-gatherers. He discusses climate change based on faunal remains and compares burial goods such as bone, antler, freshwater shell, marine shell, turtle, and stone artifacts with those found at other Texas mortuary sites and with deposits at hunter-gatherer habitation sites in Central Texas.

Finally someone publishes archaeological data from a dig........1999-01-18

First, the down side. For $37.50, I hoped for a big book full of on-site color pictures and visual data. Doesn't have that. Information wise, it is outstanding. It is very difficult to find easily read data concerning ancient man in Texas. This book not only contains the information for which it is named, but includes parametal info as well. I really enjoyed the information on faunal, artifacts, species and other information pertinent to the time period. Even the weather is included as best can be determined. The concept that many other sink holes in the area could be cemeteries is amazing in itself. Where are the other tens of thousands of deceased people that once occupied this land? More archaeologists in the future should take the time to actually publish this interesting and valuable data for the general public.

A Very Special Reason.......2007-03-14

My son and his wife sing in a choir in Victoria, B.C., and during the time when his older sister was dying from cancer in Toronto, the choir sang for her at every choir practice the first verse of Be Thou A Smooth Way. An artist friend designed a memorial card for my daughter and it contained this verse, then my friend remembered she had a copy of The Celtic Vision, in which the complete prayer is printed. We both were touched by what we learned about the spirituality of the ancient Celts and loved some of the prayers. I purchased my own copy, which I use frequently and treasure, and then bought six other copies as gifts for family and friends.

Great Resource, Silly Amazon.......2006-11-17

This is a great collection of prayers showcasing real Celtic spirituality (aka, from real Celtic peoples, who wouldn't think of themselves as Celtic.) Amazon is mistaken in labeling it Irish though, as it's from the Carmina Gadelica, which deals with the Scottish folk living in the Outer Hebrides.

In any case, usable and interesting prayers straight from the source.
