Book Description

International companies such as Levis, Toys-R-Us, Avon, Nike, McDonalds, Texaco, Reebok, Sony and the White House Task Force have learned that putting corporate citizenship at the heart of corporate strategy has given them the competitive edge. The book profiles their efforts and provides innovative and visionary solutions to issues including Human Rights, Fair Trade, Social and Ethical Auditing, Environmental Policy, Stakeholder Relations, Global Codes of Conduct and Corporate Governance. These issues carry such weight in the business world that many international corporations, Avon in particular, are requiring that all suppliers be SA8000 certified, or lose their business.

4 out of 5 stars Exit fluff, enter common sense.......2001-01-14

I read this book wearing my corporate glasses. Having worked in corporate (multi-national) America, I was biased. I have seen many mission statements which claim to improve peoples lives, but have yet to see this implemented in the daily corporate work processes. And the question managers mostly ask is: where is the data that shows that corporations can make money on good business practice? Well, this book changed all these misconceptions for me. It was lucid, very convincing and extremely well researched. For a cynic, its hard to admit that I am now a convert. I gave the book four stars because: 1. it is filled with references and cases to real companies and their proven track record of success with new strategies, 2. it provides the reader with convincing data and facts and 3. it demystifies buzz-words and has come a long way in shedding the fluff which often dominates this field. The book is structured in a way that you can read chapters independently of each other-which is great for the manager on the run. But this is also why I withheld the last star. The introductions to each chapter tend to be a little long and at times repetitive, especially when you read the book chronologically. I highly recommend this book as THE book on corporate citizenship and hope that business schools make it compulsory reading for every budding business student and professor alike. We would benefit immensely from it. Locally, as well as globally.

4 out of 5 stars Corporate Citizenship.......2000-11-13

The stated aim of the book is "to provide you with a source of ideas and examples, giving clear explanations of the issues and language currently dominating discussion about the social and environmental responsibilities of business . . . Reading this book will give you the insight and the answers as to how to evolve into a successful, responsible business. Benefit from the significant initiatives and hard lessons learned by organizations across all sectors, types and sizes" (taken from inside cover).

I believe that the book has achieved this, outlining the main issues of social accountability, documenting numerous real-life examples of companies demonstrating these principles in action, and using these to show how companies have now adopted a more socially responsible way of doing business . . . profitably! In addition, there is a glossary of terms used at the end to help understand the jargon used, as well as a list of contact addresses of organizations mentioned throughout the book.

This is very much a book targeted at managers of corporations, but can be equally relevant for tomorrow's leaders wanting to learn from past mistakes, therefore was an interesting read. I enjoyed reading it and find the principles stated relevant not only to organizations, but to individuals too. My main criticism was that there was a great emphasis on the role of the organization throughout the book, and little was said about the individual until the end. Although I realize that this was the focus of the book (being called "Corporate Citizenship"!!), I think that I might have found it more personally relevant if it also incorporated the role of every stakeholder in society. We all have our part to play, which was occasionally overlooked in this book.

Apparently the author had written or tried to write a lot on many things.(Please refer to the Table of Content). The problem is, one can learn very little. I really cant grasp any core message or useful technique/strategy/tool. Worst of all, his writing skill was awful. He used paragraphs of words to explain a simple idea that could be presented easily in graphs. Similar ideas were repeated in different chapters. The few graphs shown were bad, too. Perhaps except the first chapter on the problem of index benchmarking which was a bit insightful (but not helpful on personal investing actually), there was nothing useful at all. Somehow I got the feeling that the author simply wanted to write a book to promote his money management business. In short, a waste of time and my hard earned money.

p.s. If I had known of the author's second book "Savvy Home Buying Tactics: Financing Exposed from the Inside (2006)", I would definitely give this 2005 one a pass.

                  Book Description

This book is devoted entirely to methods developed in and for studies of members of the bacterial family Streptococcaceae. Many of the studies that have been conducted on the Streptococcaceae were initiated because of the diseases they cause, or to enhance their utility from an industrial perspective. However, the results of many of these investigations have demonstrated a complexity among some members of the family that warrants an interest in them in their own right, apart from or in addition to any biomedical or industrial considerations.
It is therefore hoped and expected that the advanced methods contained in this book will be of interest to those who work with the streptococci and other Gram-positive organisms, to researchers interested in industrial and medical microbiology and to any researcher who seeks to obtain a better understanding of how microorganisms interact with each other, their environment and their hosts.

                    Book Description

The Princeton Review realizes that acing the SAT II: Physics Subject Test is very different from getting straight A’s in school. We don't try to teach you everything there is to know about physics–only what you'll need to score higher on the exam. There's a big difference. In Cracking the SAT II: Physics, we'll teach you how to think like the test writers and

·Dodge the test traps and pitfalls that can cost you points
·Use proven score-raising techniques to break questions down and improve your score
·Use targeted review techniques to crack mechanics, kinetics, thermodynamics, modern physics, and other complex topics

This book includes two full-length practice SAT II: Physics Subject Tests. The practice questions are just like the ones you’ll see on the actual exam, and we fully explain every solution.

                    5 out of 5 stars Not a bad book.......2006-06-10

This is an excellent book for studying physics but not for preparing SAT 2 physics. However this book is a little harder than the real test.

                    3 out of 5 stars Decent Book.......2005-05-27

I found this book decent. One MAJOR complaint I have is that the problems at the end of each chapter are much too difficult and are not useful because they are too specific and will never be tested on the exam. The questions make you recall often specific formulas that won't be on the SAT II.

Also, some of the concepts covered in the book are superfluous or too far in depth. My suggestion is to use the SparkNotes Physics SAT II for review and then practice tests in this book. I haven't looked at any other review sources besides Princeton Review and SparkNotes, however out of those two I recommend the SparkNotes because it is shorter and much easier to understand.

The best way, however to study, is to have a good physics textbook, a good teacher, and be confident in material you reviewed in class. Taking this exam by just using this book and having no other knowledge is a huge mistake.

In conclusion, my main problems are the chapter questions which are too specific and exam review which is often useless and also overly meticulous.

4 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2004-07-08

I took the June 04 SAT II Physics after taking a freshman Honors Physics course. In this class we did not cover electricity, magnetism, nuclear physics, particle physics, or relativity.

I studied for about two and half months prior to the exam, maybe half an hour every day, and in the last month, an hour a day, and the last two weeks, two hours a day.

This book is very good as it is extremely thorough, and I found its explanations of uncovered topics to be quite helpful.

However, there was a lot of unnecessary material that was in the book. Rotational Kinematics and a lot of particle/nuclear physics were not covered in the least on the actual exam. I don't know if this is the standard for all tests or if the edition I took was an exception.

The practice tests were much harder than the actual thing. I received a 720 and 760 on the Princeton, and an 800 on the actual thing.

In addition to the Princeton Review, I used the Kaplan and Sparknotes books and studied them thoroughly, and I glossed over the Barrons. My suggestion for doing well? Use the Kaplans and work through that in the first month or so (it is not indepth, just provides the basic ideas, and the practice tests are a joke). Then, move onto the Princeton, and perhaps take a look at some of the Barrons problems as they are extremely hard and good. However, I would advise those not to use the Sparknotes as it is plagued with errors, although the material is very good.

Good luck to all those who take the Physics SAT II. If you are any good at Physics I would advise taking it as it is one of the more lenient SAT II's (Get 8 wrong, and you can still pull off an 800 or 790).

                    2 out of 5 stars Cutting corners.......2004-05-24

Really, if you want to buy this book I'd suggest you buy the AP Physics Review published by Princeton Review instead. Why? Because its the SAME thing! The only difference is that they took out the Physics C-level stuff and scarped out all the free response questions. All the multiple choice are the same, and so are the review material (from the diagrams to the explaination).

4 out of 5 stars Publisher Says No Errors Reported.......2004-05-13

I'm giving this review a decent score sight unseen because the publisher monitors errors, and none has been reported (per Random House Customer Service, 800-733-3000).

All the SAT prep books are surely produced under tight time and budget constraints, and so the availability of errata is an important attribute. I ask others to consider this in their reviews. Random House's system is cumbersome; many publishers could learn from O'Reilly's handling of this issue.

                              Book Description

Sir Winston Churchill's first major historical work was this thrilling eyewitness account of one of the most remarkable events in the history of the British Empire. The River War was written in 1899 when Winston Churchill was a serving officer in the British army. It includes first-hand accounts of the actions in which he took part, including the celebrated victory at Omdurman. The River War tells one of the most extraordinary stories in the annals of the Empire: the rise of the famous Mahdi and his Dervish Empire; the murder of General Gordon at Khartoum; and the subsequent re-conquest of the Sudan by the Anglo-Egyptian force under General Kitchener. In the riveting style that would later earn him the Nobel Prize for Literature, Churchill recounts the background to the war, the history of the Sudan and its people, as well as vivid accounts of the battles and the hardships endured by the soldiers. Long out of print, The River War is a gripping account of this clash of arms and cultures. 296 pp 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 8 pp b/w photos

Yet he who had not seen the desert or felt the sun heavily on his shoulders would hardly admire the fertility of the riparian scrub. Unnourishing reeds and grasses grow rank and coarse from the water's edge. The dark, rotten soil between the tussocks is cracked and granulated by the drying up of the annual flood. The character of the vegetation is inhospitable. Thorn-bushes, bristling like hedgehogs and thriving arrogantly, everywhere predominate and with their prickly tangles obstruct or forbid the path. Only the palms by the brink are kindly, and men journeying along the Nile must look often towards their bushy tops, where among the spreading foliage the red and yellow glint of date clusters proclaims the ripening of a generous crop, and protests that Nature is not always mischievous and cruel.

5 out of 5 stars 1899 version of shock and awe.......2007-01-13

careful build up to climax of campaign at Omderman. Officer's perspective shows objective military analysis of force & probable outcomes for each engagement. Great narrative on cavalry movements in the field (almost like a sports report). Clear explanation of how the jehadi warrior code applied then as it does today. Refreshingly free of modern sentiment but full of respect for men fighting to the death on both sides; and of those who suffered terrible disease. The territorial value of securing sudan is argued weakly by Winston - suggesting the main motive behind the campaign was the political value of winning back hearts and minds after the disgraceful Khartoum incident. Good account of the French trying to interfere (Fashoda etc) and being told to 'pise oef' in a friendly British way. I am now going to read Gordon's 'Letters at Khartoum' - as recommended by Winston in these pages.

                              5 out of 5 stars Where's that anti-Islam polemic?.......2006-04-18

My attention was drawn to the book when I received an e-mail with the text of a speech allegedly made by Churchill in 1899, and attributed to pp 248-250 of Volume II of the first edition. The nicest part says "Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it."
Copies of the first edition are offered for much more money than the matter is worth to me. The soft-cover edition I bought (Wildside Press, no date) does not contain the supposed speech or quotation. Can anyone shed light on that?
The book itself is a meticulously detailed account of the campaign against the Mahdi, of the events that led up to it, and of the political context of Egypt and the Susan in those years. More detail than you might have thought you needed. The Mahdi's troops were said to be very brave, well armed with Mauser rifles and Nordenfeldt field guns (Sir Basil Zaharoff's company!); the Egyptian soldiers led by British officers had Lee Metford rifles (good but inferior to Mausers)and much more ammo; the Sudanese soldiers led by British officers had Martini-Henry single shot breech-loading rifles (remember the movie "Zulu" with Michael Caine, about the battle at Rorke's Drift?), not very good but good enough.
British military organization, logistics, and professional discipline carried the day. If you need a capsule account of the campaign itself, the best comment came from Hillaire Belloc, a British gasbag: "The difference is that we have got...the Maxim Gun, and they have not."

4 out of 5 stars A Young "Subaltern of the Empire" with a Destiny.......2006-03-22

Here we find a 20-something Churchill reporting on the British-Egyptian campaign against the Mahdists in the Sudan in the late 1890's. This is mostly told in the third person, although he was present for part of the action as a junior officer in the 21st Lancers (back when cavalry still rode horses).

The language is quite readable today, although there are many local and military terms and proper nouns that I had to look up. My edition of this work is paperback and has one ASCII art map at the front, but I would have liked more maps to illustrate the many dates and place names.

Despite some (now rather impolitic, at the very least) themes such as an intrinsic British and European military and cultural superiority, our narrator offers a surprisingly broad political perspective for someone so early in his career. We now know that this career would be long and storied.

I think this book is relevant today as background for the continuing conflicts of the Middle East and Central Asia, whether you see them as vestiges (and payback) for colonialism, or Islam vs. Infidel, or (fill in your own favorite reductionist slogan). The Story of the Malakand Field Force (Churchill's work on an action in what is now, I think, Pakistan and Afghanistan) is similarly relevant to this very contemporary topic, and should give pause to any power considering an occupation of a place like Afghanistan.

4 out of 5 stars The River War.......2005-04-28

This is a very important book that was not put forward vigorously because of the low quality of the writing and the racism that ruled the mind of Winston Churchill and the minds of the elite of Great Britain and their policy makers. I have studied the Napoleonic war and the manipulation of the Allies by the British and all the countries who went forth a Vikings later turned to colony making.

Winston Churchill was not a nice person. He was responsible for the death of tens of thousands and believed in Lord George's proclamation, "I reserve the right to bomb niggers". This hate, fear, repulsion of Moors, and negars as stated by Queen Elizabeth is reflected to this day in the British shrunken Empire. The death of millions of folks all over the world to feed the greed of the Empire sets the Euro-centric folks into happy gaiety.

I know why Newt likes this book. It is the Think Tank mentality that places not the good of the American people first but the good of the white male and then the white female first against all others by using a level of fear down the list toward genocide or passive resistance.

The turmoil in the world, over population, hunger, famine, fatal diseases, are all worst because of this wasted chance of the west to embrace true Christianity. I do not mean that Constantine bible crap to allow him to have conscripts to protect the empire but the homo-sapian social ethics that allowed us to survive an Ice Age, and the world's natural dangers.

The glorification of organized violence should never be reinforced.

5 out of 5 stars Great Military History applicable to our times.......2003-12-28

This is a great history of an obscure little war that holds many lessons for the military today. I recommend it as a great read for any soldier or anyone linterested in military history or science. Churchill is a great writer and you can almost feel the heat and smell the gunsmoke in these pages.

Reactions and Characterizations of Solids is designed as an introductory text with plenty of illustrative examples to reinforce the essentials of the topic. The fundamental principles of elementary crystal chemistry are introduced together with the principles of both preparing and characterizing materials in the solid state. Some elementary thermodynamics are also included at this stage to introduce the idea of bond strength as a method of determining and predicting compound stability.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A967023. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Metal matrix composite have potential in a variety of aerospace applications, but they should be better understood before they can be employed. Despite the many studies that have contributed to characterizing the fatigue response of titanium alloy MMCs, few have researched the residual strength. The purpose of this study was to investigate the residual strength and the frequency effects on the residual strength of an unidirectional laminate of SCS-6/Ti-6-4, a titanium alloy matrix based composite under tension-tension, load-controlled conditions at elevated temperatures and different frequencies. Specimens were fatigued at frequencies of 1 and 0.01Hz, and at maximum stress of 900MPa with a stress ratio 0.05 and temperature of 427 deg C. From the supplier: The conservation movement which began in the 1800s is threatened by several attacks against existing and proposed environmental laws and regulations. Proposed budget cuts undermine the implementation of various programs and community efforts. Policy riders that are attached to environmental bills would potentially block strategies that would conserve wetlands and delay the enforcement of air and water pollution standards. As a result, several recommendations are presented such as the wise management of resources and demonstration of a personal commitment to the environment.
