Congratulations. You've built a successful business, or earned a lot of money and invested it wisely, or skillfully managed the family business you inherited. Now it's time to figure out what to do with it all, as taking it with you isn't an option. Obviously, there's more to this task than retirement planning, which is complex enough for most people. How do you ensure that your money survives you, no matter how long you live, and ends up in the hands of those you want to have it, after you're gone? How do you keep estate taxes--which can take a 55 percent bite out of your wealth--to a minimum?
Staying Wealthy covers all contingencies, with sections on estate planning, long-term health care, business succession, investing, family issues, liability, charity, and, finally, a look at the all those problems as faced by the superwealthy. The chapter on estate planning alone is scary enough to make you read the entire book. It shows what happens if you die without a will--intestate--and explains that your assets will be divided up according to the laws of whatever state you happened to be living in at the time of your death. "It would be purely coincidental if the state's plan of distribution matched your own," writes Breuel, who goes on to note that it's not just society's poorest who shed their mortal coil without a will; Pablo Picasso and Abraham Lincoln both died intestate. Each section is richly detailed, with easy-to-understand charts and graphs, hypothetical case studies, and real examples drawn from news reports. The only thing more useful for the wealthy would be a book detailing how not to die, get divorced, or become incapacitated. Until someone figures that out, though, Staying Wealthy is the book that should be on the shelf of everyone who's earned a small fortune, or aspires to. --Lou Schuler
Book Description
This is the most accessible consumer book ever to address the question, "How can I enjoy and pass to my heirs more of what I'm working a lifetime to accumulate?" Breuel's three decades of experience in giving people more control over their wealth is evident in the power and simplicity of his advice.

The Last Straw

Book Description
Long ago a man named Artaban and three companions observed a new star in the night sky. They knew it signified the birth of a great teacher--someone who would bring change and hope to the world. There and then they decided to follow the star to pay homage to the newborn child. But along the way Artaban stops to help those in need, and his journey takes him far longer than he could have dreamed. Lovingly written and stunningly illustrated, here is a Christmas story unlike any other, about one man's lifelong search for virtue. The Fourth Wise Man truly captures the real meaning of Christmas and is sure to be a holiday favorite for all ages. Susan Summers is a former teacher who shared the story of The Fourth Wise Man with her students for many years, and finally decided to write it down. Jackie Morris has illustrated several books, including Out of the Ark: Stories from the World's Religions, which Publishers Weekly praised for its joyous watercolors.
Customer Reviews:
Simple and yet powerful.......2006-02-09
The Bible tells of the three wise men, Magi, who came from the East, following a star to the newly born King of the Jews. But, there was a fourth wise man, Artaban, who sold all that he had, and acquired three jewels, to give as his gift to the babe. But, when Artaban stops to help a sick man, he is delayed and misses accompanying the other three, and so he must set off alone. This is the story of the fourth wise man, who seeks the King of the Jews, and finds him in the most unlikely of places.
This is an absolutely wonderful story. It takes the famous 1896 story, written by Henry Van Dyke (1852-1933), and puts it in simple and yet powerful words which can be read by the younger reader. But, this isn't just a kids' book. Indeed, the author wrote an excellent parable for all Christians, telling a powerful story in an easy-to-understand manner. I loved the story, and Jackie Morris's excellent illustrations.
I am glad to have this book, and highly recommend it to everyone!
Cut Throught the Christmas Clutter.......2005-03-09
How about something fresh and new to cut through some of the Christmas clutter that seems to spring up around the holiday each year and must always be pruned away before the season can be properly celebrated and enjoyed ?
How about a powerful and moving story that has stood the test of time for a hundred years and is available as a children's book?
How about a meaningful and inspiring tale that the whole family can enjoy together, a fictional story that helps to put the real story of Christmas into its proper historical and cultural context, and expose some of its true meaning?
Henry van Dyke (1852-1933) graduated from Princeton in 1873, was pastor of the Brick Presbyterian Church in New York City (1883-99), professor of English literature at Princeton (1899-1923), and U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands (1913-16). He wrote the well known hymn Ode To Joy (Joyful, Joyful). He also wrote The Story of the Other Wise Man which was originally published in 1895.
He wrote how Artaban desperately desired to travel with the other three wise men to worship and adore the Christ Child, but delayed his quest to bring his gifts to the newborn king in order to help a dying man, save the life of a baby, and rescue a young girl from slavery. Artaban finally loses every one of his gifts but finds and is found by the King of kings. Henry Van Dyke wrote a touching story of someone who spends his life doing good and searching for truth and beauty.
Susan Summers was a teacher in England. During an epiphany service at a small church she first encountered Henry Van Dyke's story. She was so impressed and moved by it that she began to use it each year as a school assembly topic. After leaving teaching she rewrote the story for children, and dedicated it to her former students.
Jackie Morris created the beautiful watercolor illustrations that accompany the text. They include large panoramic vistas and moving portraits.

Not for tots.......2003-01-01
This is a great book, especially for anyone trying to teach the real meaning of christmas. It is in the format of a child's book, but its language and subject matter (including the murder of all babies under Herod) is pretty advanced, so it's appropriate for kids who would normally read chapter books: I'd say 7+ years.
Beautiful Story.......2002-05-15
This book should be on the gift list for everyone you know! The original story was written by Henry Van Dyke (1852-1933). Susan Summers has rewritten and brought forth such gorgeous illustrations of a very special tale! No holiday season should go by without bringing this wonderful book out to read in a cozy gathering around the fireplace.
The Fourth Wise Man tells the story of Artaban who had originally planned to journey to Bethlehem with the other three wisemen to pay homage to the new King of the Jews but was delayed by his acts of kindness to others along the way. He does miss the birth of Jesus but continues a lifelong search of the King with a most wonderful journey and blissful end.
This is one of my all time favorites for any season and always brings tears to my eyes to think of the beauty of Artaban's life. Here's what Mr. Van Dyke had to say about his story:
"Who seeks for heaven alone to save his soul May keep the path, but will not reach the goal; While he who walks in love may wander far, Yet God will bring him where the blessed are."
Wow!.......2001-12-28
A wonderful addition to a family's library. Reading this book should become a family tradition right along with "Twas the Night Before Christmas"

Book Description
"I do not know where this little story came from--out of the air, perhaps. One thing is certain, it is not written in any other book, nor is it to be found among the ancient lore of the East. And yet I have never felt as if it were my own. It was a gift, and it seemed to me as if I knew the Giver."
--Henry Van Dyke
Long, long ago, a wise man named Artaban, a priest of the Magi, discerned from heavenly signs that the time was at hand for the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy--the birth among the Hebrews of a holy Prince and Deliverer of Man. Hastening to join three fellow Magi for the long journey into Judaea, he paused to help a dying man and was left behind. And so Artaban began his pilgrimage alone, striking out not toward the realization of his life's deepest longing, as he hoped, but only toward misfortune and suffering. Or so he believed until one blessed, radiant moment.
With an introduction by Leo Buscaglia
Download Description
Artaban dismounted. The dim starlight revealed the form of a man lying across the road. His humble dress and the outline of his haggard face showed that he was probably one of the poor Hebrew exiles who still dwelt in great numbers in the vicinity. His pallid skin, dry and yellow as parchment, bore the mark of the deadly fever which ravaged the marsh-lands in autumn. The chill of death was in his lean hand, and, as Artaban released it, the arm fell back inertly upon the motionless breast.
Customer Reviews:
One of My Favorite Authors.......2007-08-20
Henry Van Dyke is an incredible author. This little Christmas story is one of his best. It takes a well-known story about the 3 wisemen and adds a new twist. He takes us down a path that we think is so familiar and then shocks us with the fact that a life well-lived is not defined by God the way we define it.
Through the travels of the "Other Wise Man" we learn how to love others, how to show compassion and how to open our hearts to those God loves.
Uplifting experiences.......2007-01-09
The Other Wise Man truly puts things into perspective about to gain what one wants in life. It comes only through service to others & seeking to do something that makes a real difference in the lives of those around me. It isn't so much a case of being religious as realizing there are spiritual principles in life, that if observed, lead one to a fulfilling life by helping others in need. Do that & one will truly live a life with meaning & purpose.
Inspiring Tiny Tale........2006-09-15
The Three Wise Men were members of the Magi who set out to find Jesus when the Star of Jerusalem appeared. They sought the King of Kings who would be the Prince of Peace and set things right in the world. During their journey they stopped at Herod, seeking direction and when the finally found Jesus, they gave him great gifts and went home by another route so as to confuse Herod from his plot to kill the child.
Besides what is recorded in the Bible, we really know very little about The Three Wise Men and the Magi of which the belonged. There are some speculations that can be made based upon snippets in the recorded historical recorded, but that is all and most stories about these individuals is conjecture. THE STORY OF THE OTHER WISE MAN is a tiny tale about a supposedly fourth Magi, name Artaban. The story was originally written at the end of the 19th Century (1896) and was supposedly given to preacher and professor Henry Van Dyke in a vision.
In the story, Artaban sets out on a journey to meet his fellow Magi as they travel forth the meet a holy Prince among the Hebrews. Selling all that he owned, Artaban was going to present the child with three precious jewels. However, along the way he stops to help a dying man and is left behind by his companions. Artaban spends the rest of his life seeking the child and hoping to at see and meet the Prince before he dies.
THE STORY OF THE OTHER WISE MAN is a touching and eloquent tale that could work as a sermon explaining and expounding the essence of Christianity through the life of a person well-lived. It is a lesson we could all learn from: "He knew that all was well, because he had done the best that he could, from day to day. He had been true to the light that had been given to him."
Wonderful story, mediocre production values, great gift.......2006-06-24
This wonderful story, often preached as "The Story of the Fourth Wise Man," is beautifully written in the language and flow of another era. I give this book only four stars, however, because the book production values are mediocre. The paper and typeface aren't very good, and there are several typographical errors, which I think are inexcusable. Very much worth buying for yourself and as gifts, however, as a moving reminder of the true meaning of Christianity (and not just at Christmas).
Wonderful.......2006-01-06
The full impact of this book does not hit you until the end of it. I found myself with tears in my eyes and a heart full of joy. This is a wonderful work that displays the true meaning of the Christmas season. Wonderful!
Book Description
the story of the fourth wise man and his search for the Christ child is elegantly presented with rich oil illustrations
Customer Reviews:
I have given all my copies away!!.......2003-12-20
My English teacher read this to my class in Grade 12, and I remember crying in class. Very touching story which reminds us of the meaning of Christmas. I have purchased this for the children and adults in my life so many times that I have run out of copies. I guess that Amazon doesn't mind that...
The Story of the Other Wiseman by Henry Van Dyke.......1999-12-12
This is the story of Artaban, a seeker of Truth. He is the other wiseman who sought the 'great king'foretold in ancient script and heralded by the 'star'. On his way to meet the three wisemen, he is delayed. This sets him on a quest ins search of the King. It will lead him to many places and experiences. This book with its beautiful word pictures reminds us once again the importance of seeking Truth wherever we find it. It adds new meaning to the story of Christmas.
Book Description
A kindhearted king plays a bigger role in the Nativity than he realizes in this ode to unsung heroes everywhere.
Once upon a time, three kings came out of a distant land and followed a star across the desert. You may know them as the Wise Men, or perhaps the magi-bearers of gold, frankincense, and myrrh for a newborn child. What few know is that another king set out on the long and difficult journey, a king named Mazzel who, unlike the well-sung trio, arrived too late and empty-handed. First there was the frightened nomad girl who needed rescuing from a sandstorm, then the lost merchant caravan in need of a guide, and more crises along the route. What was Mazzel to do? Based on the short story "The Other Wise Man" by Henry Van Dyke, this enchanting fable from artist Ted Sieger is a heartening, universal tale that reminds us all of the meaning of Christmas.
Book Description
The Story of the Other Wise Man has been a favorite Christmas stories of Americans for generations. It is a story of sacrifice and redemption that moves the heart. This edition also includes three other Christmas stories by Henry van Dyke: The Christmas Angel, The Lost Word, and The Spirit of Christmas. The edition is illustrated by Mark Peyton.
