Driving Digital is loaded with both inspiration and pragmatic advice for anyone who recognizes that extraordinary gains are already being made by fully integrating technology into the workplace, but who still lacks the know-how--and perhaps the motivation--to get it accomplished. Robert McDowell, a vice president at Microsoft, uses best practices from wired operations like Marriott International, the city of Charlotte, North Carolina, and his own employer to flesh out its theme: using technology as a strategic weapon.McDowell's underlying message is that company leaders must truly be computer literate in order to drive their cultures in that direction and realize the benefits. He explains ways this is happening today, emphasizing that the most effective programs are implemented by business staffers, rather than IT, because they make related decisions and are ultimately accountable for them. He describes specific improvements, such as reducing red tape (for example, by transferring common forms to user-friendly electronic versions available through a company intranet) and upgrading vendor relations (by literally bringing them on board through alliances and strategic partnerships).
Recommended for business leaders who know what they must do, technologically, but who still need a swift kick in the right direction to get it done. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
As a manager in any organization, of any industry anywhere, you've known for a while that your company's strategy and vision had better include technology. If it doesn't, your enterprise will wind up as roadkill on the information superhighway.
Now here's a book to help you fully understand how leading organizations are shaping strategy, "driving digital" throughout the enterprise, and selling this new way of thinking to executives and managers who just don't get it.
Robert McDowell's Driving Digital combines the experience and candor of a Microsoft Corporation vice president to show why technology is no longer just a tool. He shows how it can become a driving force in today's workplace -- an essential core of any business plan -- and shares the secrets of how to make it happen in your company.
In his ten years at Microsoft, McDowell has seen successful companies combine business strategy with technology. In Driving Digital, he offers an insider view of the pitfalls and payoffs of the IT revolution in the workplace. You'll learn from stories shared by McDowell and other leaders across the spectrum of business and around the world. For example:
President Miguel Angel Rodriguez Echeverria of Costa Rica, who learned to use e-mail on live, national television to lead his country into the electronic age by example
David Jones, group chief information officer at Scottish Power, who brought this 24,000-employee, £6.5 billion company together on one information highway
Jim Hebe, the CEO of Freightliner Trucks, who used technology to drive his business further, faster, and better than the competition
Ed McDonald, who as chief of technology at Texaco whittled the company's 13 different e-mail systems down to one, giving every employee access to everyone else.
McDowell also takes you behind the scenes at Microsoft, sharing what he has learned from Chairman Bill Gates and CEO Steve Ballmer about using technology to think strategically.
Driving Digital speaks frankly and clearly about how managers and leaders need to get wired -- and why you should be doing that riqht now. Sure, it can be daunting, McDowell admits, to rethink an entire operations system, communications devices, and even business goals. But, he warns, this is where business is going, and the success of any company depends on its ability to plug into the information age.
For managers and leaders, Driving Digital is a fast ride toward a successful destination.

McDowell and Simon make strong cases for how information technology should not be used simply to do things better than you have done them before, but instead to use it to do things you have never been able to do before. If you don't fully understand technology and want some non-technical explanations of why you should be using it, this book was written for you.
A great surprise.......2001-05-21
However, it's not just Microsoft's views because the "speakers" in the book are real customers; giant companies like Texaco, as you would expect, but also small companies (including one VERY small -- a one-person firm) and even a city mayor and a state governor.
This is a practical guide about using technology to stay competitive, whether your business is large or small. Look for yourself.

In a field lacking choice there is no need to choose another.......2000-05-05
This is an excellent book on a topic which unfortunately receives little attention at most law schools. This book provides lawyers or law students with the analytic skills necessary to be successful at practice and at class. In addition if you do not develop those skills you can always use the plethora of statutory cannons contained in this book.

Differential Models of Hysteresis (Applied Mathematical Sciences)
Augusto Visintin Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540547932 |
Book Description
Hysteresis effects occur in science and engineering: plasticity, ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity are well-known examples. Modelling and mathematical analysis of hysteresis phenomena have been addressed by mathematicians only recently, but are now in full development. This volume provides a self-contained and comprehensive introduction to the analysis of hysteresis models, and illustrates several new results in this field. First the classical models of Prandtl, Ishlinskii, Preisach and Duhem are formulated and studied, using the concept of "hysteresis operator". A new model of discontinuous hysteresis is introduced. Several partial differential equations containing hysteresis operators are studied in the framework of Sobolev spaces.

The Feller sisters are equal but opposite. Maggie is the good-looking, dyslexic little sister who knows how to get anything she wants--but not how to keep it. She "felt as if somewhere between the ages of fourteen and sixteen she'd walked off the edge of a cliff and had been falling ever since." Rose is the plump, practical, responsible older sister who knows about law but not much about her own happiness: "What did she like, besides shoes, and Jim, and foods that were bad for her?" When Maggie's latest eviction lands her in Rose's apartment, and Maggie insults Rose by seducing one of her sister's rare boyfriends, what follows is a chain of events by turns hilarious and heartbreaking. Embarrassed Rose evicts Maggie and begins a work sabbatical leading to a new livelihood and way of living. Maggie flees and runs away to Princeton. Masquerading as a student, she learns to love poetry and saves money for a trip to Miami--and a visit to a long-lost grandmother named Ella who might offer her a last shot at sanctuary. But In Her Shoes, the second novel from Good in Bed author Jennifer Weiner, is about more than the sisters' latest sibling rivalry; Maggie and Rose must sort out the childhood vulnerabilities and family mysteries that still linger two decades after their mother's death. In less capable hands, the plot might grow corny, but Weiner's humor and affection for the characters ultimately helps them transcend both neuroses and grief and learn the redemptive power of love. --Jane HodgesBook Description
Meet Rose Feller, a thirty-year-old high-powered attorney with a secret passion for romance novels. She has an exercise regime she's going to start next week, and she dreams of a man who will slide off her glasses, gaze into her eyes, and tell her she's beautiful. She also dreams of getting her fantastically screwed-up, semi-employed little sister to straighten up and fly right.
Meet Rose's sister, Maggie. Twenty-eight years old and drop-dead gorgeous. Although her big-screen stardom hasn't progressed past her left hip's appearance in a Will Smith video, Maggie dreams of fame and fortune -- and of getting her big sister on a skin-care regimen.
These two women, who claim to have nothing in common but a childhood tragedy, DNA, and the same size feet, are about to learn that they're more alike than they'd ever imagined. Along the way, they'll encounter a diverse cast of characters -- from a stepmother who's into recreational Botox to a disdainful pug with no name. They'll borrow shoes and clothes and boyfriends, and eventually make peace with their most intimate enemies -- each other.

Meet Rose Feller. She's thirty years old and a high-powered attorney with a secret passion for romance novels. She has an exercise regime she's going to start next week, and she dreams of a man who will slide off her glasses, gaze into her eyes, and tell her that she's beautiful. She also dreams of getting her fantastically screwed-up little sister to get her life together. Meet Rose's sister, Maggie. Twenty-eight years old, drop-dead gorgeous and only occasionally employed, Maggie sings backup in a band called Whiskered Biscuit. Although her dreams of big-screen stardom haven't progressed past her left hip's appearance in a Will Smith video, Maggie dreams of fame and fortune - and of getting her dowdy big sister to stick to a skin-care regime. These two women with nothing in common but a childhood tragedy, shared DNA, and the same size feet, are about to learn that their family is more different than they ever imagined, and that they're more alike than they'd ever believe. In Her Shoes - Jennifer Weiner's follow-up to her critically acclaimed debut, Good in Bed - observes Rose and Maggie, the brain and the beauty, as they make journeys of discovery that take them from the streets of Philadelphia to Ivy League libraries to a "retirement community for active seniors" in Boca Raton. Along the way, they'll encounter a wild cast of characters -- from a stepmother who's into recreational Botox to a small, disdainful pug with no name. They'll borrow shoes and clothes and boyfriends, and make peace with their most intimate enemies - each other. Funny and poignant, richly detailed and wrenchingly real, In Her Shoes will speak to anyone who has endured the bonds of big - or little - sisterhood, or longed for a life different from the one the world has dictated, and dreamed of trying something else on for size.Customer Reviews:
