From the eyes/connections of a senior veteran Microsoftie you can learn for yourself how business is done and has been changed by technology. A great communicator, Mr. McDowell clears the eyes of the foggy headed, old thinking business manager to the wonders and money savings of tech. A must read for any modernizing or future thinking executive looking for success. This is one of those books that are a cheap investment in the future profitability of your company. Your employees should read it too!

I have a clear understanding in my mind of all the things my company can do to help businesses evolve strategy with our IT products and why that is important, but I have had what I believe to be a somewhat difficult time articulating the "whys and wherefores." This book provides lucid, clearly compelling explanations and examples that crystallize the message of the power of information technolgy.

McDowell and Simon make strong cases for how information technology should not be used simply to do things better than you have done them before, but instead to use it to do things you have never been able to do before. If you don't fully understand technology and want some non-technical explanations of why you should be using it, this book was written for you.

I didn't expect to like this book. Having worked for a number of the companies highlighted in the Federal Government suit against Microsoft, I thought it might be more rhetoric from Redmond.

However, it's not just Microsoft's views because the "speakers" in the book are real customers; giant companies like Texaco, as you would expect, but also small companies (including one VERY small -- a one-person firm) and even a city mayor and a state governor.

This is a practical guide about using technology to stay competitive, whether your business is large or small. Look for yourself.

Microsoft PR Phlegm Wastes Fallen Trees.......2001-05-10

After starting out by saying that the products every business makes will be obsolete in three years because Bill Gates says his will be, the book continues as such a large Microsoft PR release that one wonders if its publisher has become a vanity press. Written on company time, with each word approved by the Flacks of Redmond, it offer little insight. And when the book flap boasts the author speaks with "candor of a Microsoft VP" one can bet he didn't testify at the antitrust trial -- or maybe he did. Buy PRIDE BEFORE THE FALL or WORLD WAR 3.0 if you want to find out how Microsoft does business, not this waste of felled trees.

Unfortunately, I did not have the option of choosing to take this class from the co-author Professor Frickey, however, this book more than made up for that.

This is an excellent book on a topic which unfortunately receives little attention at most law schools. This book provides lawyers or law students with the analytic skills necessary to be successful at practice and at class. In addition if you do not develop those skills you can always use the plethora of statutory cannons contained in this book.

Much Better than the Movie.......2007-08-14

Jennifer Weiner's book was much better than the film starring Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette, and Shirley Maclaine. Not to say that the movie was bad because it wasn't, but it left out so much of Maggie's character. Plus, it gave some interesting insights into why the stepmother was so despicable. I thought the ending of the movie was so beautiful until I read the book. It's much better and more emotional than the movie ever thought about being. The only thing that takes a little adjustment is that the chapters are told from different points of view. In one chapter you will read things from Maggie's perspective while the next one will be from Rose or her grandmother Ella. At first it was kind of annoying because you get hooked on what's going on with one character, but as you go on you'll find that the different points of view is what makes the book so much better because you get to understand each of the characters and why they are they way the are. ENJOY!!!

Well written for what it was.......2007-05-21

This was my first attempt at the now commonly called "Chick-Lit" genre. I read it because I wanted something quick to read over my Easter holiday and I really enjoyed the movie.

The movie was adapted really well so there isn't much in the book that wasn't in the movie. This genre makes for an easy read so I completed the book in a little over a day. Not something to read if you really want to get wrapped up in the story as I usually like to do.

If you haven't watched the movie yet, I would strongly recommend reading the book first so you're able to enjoy it more. I would consider reading more from this author.

A waiting room in the doctor's office, the wrestling room, and the car were only a few of the places that I utilized to get even just a couple more pages read in the three days it took to complete this witty novel. Born the daughter of a famous soprano and an oboist, Kate grows up in Manhattan. On the track for a career in publishing, her job search results in her finding both a gig writing tabloids and her best friend, Janie Segal, who comes with a trust fund. When the two move in together, Kate falls for their handsome neighbor, Evan McKenna. Evan, engaged to an unfaithful super model, breaks Kate's heart one winter night when she all but reveals her deep love for him. To escape embarrassment, Kate flies to London and the comfort of her mother. On the flight home, Kate meets Ben Borowitz, a political consultant, and manages to somewhat forget Evan for the first time.

Fast-forward and Kate is now a stay-at-home mom of three trying to fit in in Stepford-like Upchurch, Connecticut. Her new circle of acquaintances are trim, fit, worry-free clones who drive SUVs and carry matching diaper bags while making sure their children are not fed any preservatives. Not the most welcoming crowd, Kate is thrilled when Kitty Cavanaugh, the assumed leader, invites her to lunch in her home. After knocking, Kate walks into Kitty's house only to find her lifeless body lying in cold blood with a knife in her back.

As Kate becomes embroiled in the mystery of Kitty's death, it becomes clear that the ideal lives of Upchurch's mom clique are simply façades for the true secrets that lie below the surface. Kate uncovers Kitty's questionable past and distasteful details about her husband. Between nursery school and play dates, Kate risks her life in hopes for a little fun and a lot of adventures. Goodnight Nobody is a fantastic read, perfect for the beach or before bed, that keeps the reader guessing and trying to solve the mystery with Kate.

After reading In Her Shoes, I knew Jennifer Weiner was an author I had to have more of. When my mom came home from a signing in Philadelphia, she mentioned having a conversation with Ms. Weiner and was interested in reading her novels, so when I saw Goodnight Nobody at the library, I had to get it. Not bothering to read the summary, I dove right in, assuming from the title that it was about a single girl's attempts at love. Little did I know, it was a murder mystery.

Never having read a mystery before, I was apprehensive until I realized that the book wouldn't leave my hands. I read it everywhere, and the concise chapters were perfect, whether I was rushing but more so when I just had to keep reading but needed a good stopping page. The characters were portrayed so well that I felt as if I not only knew them, but they were also my neighbors. I laughed out loud when Janie accidentally put ecstasy in Reina's (Kate's mom) drink. This novel was extremely comically satisfying.

I would highly recommend Goodnight Nobody to someone looking for a light read. It is a great summer novel that begs to be finished in one sitting. The only con I could find was that it's a must that you reserve a whole day or you'll find yourself staying up way past your bed time itching to figure out who Kitty's killer is and if Kate's old flame, Evan, will be rekindled.

Good book, okay movie.......2007-03-20

I loved this book, just like I loved Good in Bed and Little Earthquakes.
I read the book long before they made it into a so so movie. I hate seeing movies of books I have already read. They are always different and mess with the images I had in my head while reading it. The only books that make good movies are those that were written like a screenplay and therefore should have just been movies to begin with. If you make a movie from a book, don't change details!!!!!!
Anyway, if you like her other books, you will like this one. The only thing that I don't like about her books is that they are so similar and I forget what characters are in what book.
Oh, and to the reviewer who compared this to Bridget Jones' books, I hated the Bridget Jones' books! This is by far a much better book and not in the same category!
