I have used this text three or four times as a professor. It provides a fine integration of environmental and business aspects. I fashion a mock business entity and have my learners use the principles in the book as applied to their part of their business. It works well.

A fairly good text book.......2005-08-20

This book does give a good idea of the subject. However, I found that it is rather basic, and is suitable more as a text book, and not for the purpose that I was looking. As a person experienced in business and manufacturing, and having recently entered the retail segment, I was looking for a book that would give me more in-depth information on the subject.

More Dematiaceous Hyphomycetes reviewed by E.W.A. Boehm.......2001-05-07

Although published quite some time ago, More Dematiaceous Hyphomycetes by M. B. Ellis and his earlier book titled simply Dematiaceous Hyphomycetes are probably the most often used texts to identify hyphomycetous microfungi with dark conidiospores (and many non-pigmented hyphomycetes as well). Massively illustrated both texts supply taxonomic keys enabling the student of mycology to indentify their collections at least to genus and in many cases to species. Purchasing More Dematiaceous Hyphomycetes by M. B. Ellis by itself is probably not a good idea because many descriptions of genera given in the first text (Dematiaceous Hyphomycetes) are not repeated in the second but rather are simply referred to. Nonwithstanding this reservation, this is a "must have" book for any mycologist interested in this group of dark spored asexual fungi. I would also advise any would be purchaser of this book to also purchase BC Sutton's Coelomycetes which cover those hyphomycetes producing conidial fructifications.

The science of the aging process.......2000-04-18

This book is a collection of monographs by experts in the field of Oxidative Stress. The author is Dr Richard Cutler ,who spent 18 years working as a biochemist at the National Institute of Aging in the USA, and who is a world recognised expert in the field of the biochemistry of aging.

The book is not suitable for those readers who do not have a sound understanding of biochemistry as it concentrates on each authors own speciality and so does not explain some basic principles.

However it does contain thought provoking information on how our cells and proteins age. It has a very good chapter on cardiovascular disease that goes a long way to explain the pathogenesis of heart disease being a problem of oxidised lipids and the production of antibodies to these lipids.The antibodies attract macrophages ,which engulf the oxidised LDL and are the initial insult that produces arterial plaque.

Other chapters are hard work and need to be read twice to understand them.There are chapters on the brain degenerative disorders and Alzheimers disease that are too scientific.

Description:
We investigated the influence of partial oxidative stress on permeability and fluidity of nucleated fish red blood cells for simulating nucleated somatic cells. Peroxide value indicating lipid hydroperoxide level in nucleated red blood cells of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) increased with increasing body size. We detected that oxidation of nucleated red blood cells led to the degraded PUFA compositions and accelerated the permeability of calcein and ATP in the nucleated red blood cells restrictedly oxidized with 1 mM AAPH treatment for 30 min at 21 ^oC in the dark. Using fluorescence probes, PC"3P, we found that oxidative stress reduced the membrane fluidity of nucleated red blood cells. It was also observed that AAPH had no significant influence on the osmotic fragility and electrophoretic profiles of red blood cell proteins. These results suggest that partial oxidative-stress, even if failure to fragment the membrane, may affect membrane permeability of fish nucleated red blood cells for an important energy molecule, ATP.

The field of physical oceanography has matured to a point where it is now conceivable to combine numerical models and observations via data assimilation in order to provide ocean prediction products on various spatial and time scales. As a result, many nations have begun large-scale efforts to provide routine products to the oceanographic community and started to develop operational oceanography systems. The Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) provides a framework for these efforts, i.e. a global system of observations, communications, modeling, and assimilation that will deliver regular, comprehensive information on the state of the oceans, in a way that will promote and engender wide utility and availability of this resource for maximum benefit to the community. The societal benefit of this experiment will be an increased knowledge of the marine environment and ocean climate, predictive skills for societal, industrial, and commercial benefit and tactical and strategic advantage, as well as the provision of a comprehensive and integrated approach to the oceans. The chapters collected in this volume cover a wide range of topics and summarize our present knowledge in ocean modeling, ocean observing systems, and data assimilation.

HIGH ON MY LIST OF FAVORITES.......2006-11-23

Fiction First Aid, by Raymond Obstfeld, is packed with practical, no-nonsense tips for troubleshooting a manuscript that "needs something." It's organized simply, with chapters about plot, characterization, setting, style, theme, and the writer's life. Each chapter has sections describing symptoms, the ailment, diagnosis, and treatment. Because the author's approach assumes that the reader has already written a manuscript, I wouldn't recommend Fiction First Aid as the very first "how-to" book for a novice. But this one is high on my list of favorites.

Advanced Writing Help.......2006-06-30

I was looking for a writing guide that dealt more with plot and characterization as opposed to really technical issues (grammar, syntax, etc). My grammar is fine, but sometimes I need a reminder as to why my character isn't working or the plot is flat.

Instead of teaching about why a sentence seems off, it tells you why the story seems off.

This book is easy to read, well conceived and incredibly helpful. Obstfeld knows his stuff and he writes from the perspective of one who has been in the trenches and knows what writers need to know. Highly recommended.

Good good good.......2003-12-05

I've read many other fiction writing helping books (2!), and I can solemnly swear that this one is the best. Instead of destroying your dreams of being a writer by constantly reminding you that writing is a hard business to get into (as if I didn't know that), it offers you hope. The author obviously is experienced at writing fiction, as he teaches a class. This book is well garnished with many interesting and helpful anecdotes. The problems he adresses are things that I've been concerned about in my writing, but had not been able to find answers to in other books. It's written in a very easy to read and noncondescending manner, and has good eamples. I wholly recommend this book!

A great book to help polish your work.......2002-12-26

I'm an editing book junkie, and this is hands down the best one I've ever read. It gives specifics on trouble spots and what to look for, and actually tells you how to fix them. So many books I've read just advise of what to do, but never show you how. I read through the pages thinking, "I do that. Yikes, I do that too." My work has improved trememdously since I read this book. I think every writer who wants to polish his work or give it a final once over before submission should read it.
