Book Description

This book is directed at a wide range of readers interested in transport and/or European policies. It gives an overview of the current problems and challenges facing the European transport system and explains how a new European policy on transport infrastructure is emerging. The author argues that strong action at the EU level is needed to prevent the collapse of long distance transport. Without adequate measures in the transport sector to cope with the increase of trade and mobility associated with the development of the Single Market, European integration will stagnate. The book includes an overview of the actions undertaken in the past and the first comprehensive critical analysis of the Guidelines on trans-European transport networks (TEN's) decided by the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament in July 1996. From this, the author proposes a framework, based on efficiency, sustainability and cohesion objectives, for the establishment of a new multimodal TEN that would supersede the current TENs design. He pays particular attention to the transport implications of both the accession to the EU of Central and Eastern European countries and of the strengthening of the links with the Mediterranean neighbours. After a discussion of the political and financial difficulties of implementing TENs, he makes some practical proposals regarding the interaction between European institutions and the Member States vis-á-vis the new transport infrastructure policy. Finally, the critical questions of decision making and financing of major transport infrastructure projects are analysed to ascertain the many transformations required to introduce market rules in the sector, in particular those needed to attract private financing, and he concludes with some proposals for major changes in the role of EU institutions.

As an avid reader, I read this book over ten years ago and it still ranks as one of my favorite. I think of it often. It is a lovely and brilliant book.

A must-read for any animal lover!.......2006-03-19

I originally read this book in the early 1990's when I borrowed it from the library. I was living in Phoenix at the time, so the Sonoran desert setting was interesting. As an animal lover, this book is memorable. So much so, that when I recently took a trip back to Phoenix, as my boyfriend and I were hiking through the Superstition Mountains, I began to tell him about this book. (15 years after reading it!!) I vividly remember the way the author described how the coyote pawed at the desert floor, seeking water. I remember the coyote looking at the "sliver of moon", reminding him of his mother. Outstanding read, Ms. Popham. When I returned from the trip, I began the quest to find it again! I probably read in excess of 50 books a year...this is one book I will treasure in anticipation to share with my children.

An Epic Fable.......1999-11-16

On the surface, we have a small bunch of coyotes searching for water. But between the lines, we have a hero's odyssey. The perseverence and struggles of our hero, Brand X, evokes strong emotions. Truly, these little beasts are the most human characters you'll ever find. I mean, what could be more human than the quest to find oneself?

Good introduction, but short on analysis.......2006-01-23

Good overview of the history of terrorism as a stragety, but more of a collection of book excerpts with some introduction. Covers everything from historical terrorist groups, to modern religious fueled terrorism and state sponsored terror.

It's a good introduction, mainly because it offers direct subject matter (there is a page from the Hamas website, for example). However, the book does not go into much analysis of current situations. I would recommend this book as a start, sort of a "Readers Digest" for studying terrorism.

Authors Lea and Burke strive to help students develop the kind of logical thinking needed to understand physics and to successfully apply it to their lives, their future professions, and their mid-term examinations. They do this by first providing a conceptual understanding of each topic, and then introducing the necessary analytical problem-solving techniques. Early in the text, the authors introduce a four-step method for solving problems (model, setup, solve, analyze). This method is then used and labeled in every example in the book. Students can see the method at work with each example and learn which tools they need to solve each type of problem.

Excellent intro text but users need some math maturity.......2003-06-16

I've used this book for the 3-semester intro to physics sequence taught at San Francisco State and have been thoroughly pleased with it. Basic principles and key concepts are heavily emphasized. The authors tend to de-emphasize memorizing derived formulae (which leads to plug-and-chug problem solving) and focuses on breaking down a problem into its basic elements, which is in my opinion the best way to approach problems in physics. Some might find the math a bit rigorous for introductory physics but it's the same math as in Giancoli or Tipler which is just calculus (some differential equations is used later in the text but so does the others). This is not a "learn by example" text, since the examples tend to emphasize additional elements of the concepts (usually by showing some of the math techniques) but the text does show well thought out outlines to solving problems. It really has given me an excellent foundation in physics.

I've been working with this book for three semesters now, and I feel it's strong, specifically in that:

1. The authors recognize that many beginning students need problem solving strategies; they supply a good method and are consistent with its use.

2. The book makes it abundantly clear what the big ideas are going into (and coming out of) each chapter. This was a very helpful study tool.

3. Their is surprisingly little "hand-waving" in this book, which I think is special for an introductory book on physics.

4. The problems have a _wide_ range of difficulty levels, and there are a lot of them.

5. The book covers a terrific amount of material, including basic mechanics, waves, optics, thermodynamics, and E&M. There's a short section on special relativity and other modern physics too, which is a nice appetite-whetter for students who will continue on.

This book can be very useful, but the organizational structure might at first seem a little opaque. After some getting used to, I have found the book a great resource. I would definitely recommend it for an introductory sequence at almost any school. I think the book might fit in best at more rigorous institutions, because it doesn't really pull many punches in the early chapters (though it does a good job making challenging material digestible). A good instructor could effectively use it at any institution, though--it's written to be understood.

One side comment regarding other reviews: The intro physics courses at SF State (where some of the reviewers used this book, including me) are unfortunately out of sequence, with students taking intro E&M with as little as one semester of calculus under their belts. This is obviously a big problem and I think some criticism has been leveled at the book (unfairly) because of it.

Hard to read, difficult to understand.......2001-02-01

This is a poor choice for a lower division physics course. The authors' writing style is not particularly clear and often difficult to read, not to mention DRY. Nothing in this text inspired any interest in the subject matter. Come on! Physics should not be too difficult to make interesting! The authors sometimes use concepts that are not introduced and explained until later in the book. There must be better choices for an introductory physics class. (This text is the only physics text used at San Francisco State University. I have to assume that the primary (only?) reason it was chosen is that Lea & Burke teach there.)

Poorly written, hard to read and understand.......2001-02-01

I found this textbook to be difficult to read and understand, not a problem I normally have. The authors use concepts that are not introduced and discussed until later in the book. Overall, a poor choice for a first college-level textbook on physics.
