Book Description
Mirroring the expansion of wealth in the Middle East and Asia and a surge in Islamic self-identity, Islamic banking practices have either become the law of the land or coexist and compete with Western practices in at least six countries. A growing number of institutions and mutual funds (akin to Western ''socially responsible'' funds) have established Islamic investment and other practices to cater to this burgeoning market. Because of its prevalence, practitioners in every banking-related area must familiarize themselves with current Islamic finance practices in order to do business with Muslim clients and to engage in cross-border financing. Injunctions from the Qur'an and the sayings of Prophet Muhammed have generated a web of interrelated norms which prohibit Islamic financiers from engaging in transactions that involve interest (riba) and speculation (gharar). Islamic Law and Finance describes the dynamic set of Islamically-sanctioned ways financiers can transacat business.

The Deposition Guide discusses what deposition witnesses’ rights are and how witnesses can best prepare and handle themselves at their deposition, offering an easy-to-read, practical handbook dealing with the civil pretrial “discovery” process, including abuses to which a deposition witness may be exposed. This handbook exposes the reality of what actually happens in a deposition and cites court rules governing depositions that a witness ("deponent") can assert before, during and after a deposition to maximize his or her rights and make the experience a much less stressful one. There is a chapter devoted to special tips for expert witnesses, and another that gives advice on how to prepare and conduct yourself during a videotaped deposition.
Customer Reviews:
Great help if you read it before your deposition is taken.......2002-11-13
Like a lot of people, I had no idea what to expect when I was told I had to give a deposition in a lawsuit where I was listed as a witness. All I knew was that lawyers would be asking me a lot of questions under oath, and I was nervous, since the last place I feel comfortable is in a room full of lawyers. I wanted to know what my rights were as a witness. I bought The Deposition Guide and am glad I did. In a short, easy-to-read book there are dozens of tips and advice on the law that gave me confidence I had some control over what goes on in a deposition and what I could do if it got out of hand. The book also explains and puts into perspective just what a deposition is and why lawyers want this kind of testimony before a trial. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be prepared and understand what his or her rights are before being subjected to a deposition.

Hop! Plop! Boom! Bop! This day’s fun will never stop!
Mouse and Elephant know that the perfect remedy to a boring day is a trip to the playground. But it’s a little tough to decide which playground ride is their favorite. With Elephant so Big, and Mouse so Small, each ride can be a bit of a challenge for the pair. The seesaw sends Mouse soaring. The swings are a total flop for Elephant. And the whirly-bird is just a bit too whirly for Mouse. It takes a little bit of trial and a whole lot of error before Mouse and Elephant discover what their favorite really is — each other.
A funny and charming look at friendship, with a simple and playful text that the youngest audiences will beg to hear over and over!
Customer Reviews:
Great book for toddlers.......2007-08-23
The language is sharp, the images bright, and any toddler would delight in following an adult reading the book. A definite delight.
Teamwork in action.......2007-02-03
"Hop! Plop!" begins with two bored friends on a sunshiny day. They decide to head down to the playground for a little fun.
And that's when the trouble begins. You see, our two friends are physically incompatible--one is an elephant, the other a mouse. The seesaw is complete failure, with poor mouse set flying with a "hop," a "plop," a "boom," and a "bop." Mouse tries to eat an entire watermelon to even up their weight, but all that water content doesn't help. Needless to say, "the swings were a total flop" as well. As is the whirlybird.
Finally, the elephant discovers some playground equipment that will work for the two friends. He creates a slide from his own trunk. The two are delighted and celebrate with rounds of "you're my favorite."
Written in compact prose by Corey Rosen Schwartz and Tali Klein, "Hop! Plop!" is, on the surface of things, a simple tale. But it offers so much more. "Hop! Plop!" is the perfect choice for a preschool or kindergarten unit on weights and measures. It's also a classic sibling or friend "finding a compromise" story. With a little ingenuity, two friends or siblings can work anything out, despite their differences. "Hop! Pop!" is also an excellent early reader title. Schwartz and Klein have kept the difficult words to a minimum and there are plenty of excellent onomatopoeic words just perfect for sounding out.
Olivier Dunrea's cheerful, warm illustrations really drew me in. They suggest a languid summer's day when kids (or mice and elephants) have the freedom to find something to do.
"Hop! Plop!" is highly recommended for children ages three to eight.
What a great kids book.......2006-11-10
This book is so wonderful. It was reccomened to me by a customer of mine. The wording is great and big enough for kids. The illustrations are out of this world. My son loves it. I have decided that I will be giving this book to all the kids in my extended family this holiday.
Hop! Plop!.......2006-05-14
I am a child and family therapist as well as a mother of 3 year old twins and a 5 year old. I am a Mom first so when I first read this book I was so impressed with the concepts being taught behind the story of two friends whom appear to be from opposite worlds. As a professional who works with small children I can see myself using this book within play therapy to help teach problem solving, tolerance of personal and physical differences, how to make those differences be a positive not a negative and the benefits of compromise within relationships whether it be friends (as it was in the book) or family. It has wonderful lessons carefully woven throughout the delightful text and captivating illustrations. A must have for any pre-schooler. It is a daily request in our household.
A fresh approach..........2006-04-20
What a fresh and warm approach to teaching kids about challenges, creative solutions and friendships. I have given this book to 3 of my nieces and friend's kids and they have all told me their kids love it. I look forward to their next book!

Lovely book.......2001-07-13
There are so few books today (even for kids) that are about unabashed joy, rather than scary things. This is a delightful, refreshing story with suitably adorable illustrations. I want to buy it for all the young children (and even some of the adults) I know!

Book Description
"Chesapeake Invader is excitingly written.... Poag shows us how scientific discoveries are made and how there are many twists and turns along the way."--Donald Prothero, Occidental College
Thirty-five million years ago, a meteorite three miles wide and moving sixty times faster than a bullet slammed into the sea bed near what is now Chesapeake Bay. The impact, more powerful than the combined explosion of every nuclear bomb on Earth, blasted out a crater fifty miles wide and one mile deep. Shock waves radiated through the Earth for thousands of miles, shaking the foundations of the Appalachians, as gigantic waves and winds of white-hot debris transformed the eastern seaboard into a lifeless wasteland. Chesapeake Invader is the story of this cataclysm, told by the man who discorered it happened. Wylie Poag, a senior scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey, explains when and why the catastrophe occurred, what destruction it caused, how scientists unearthed evidence of the impact, and how the meteorite's effects are felt even today.
Poag begins by reviewing how scientists in the decades after World War II uncovered a series of seemingly inexplicable geological features along the Virginia coast. As he worked to interpret one of these puzzling findings in the 1980s in his own field of paleontology, Poag began to suspect that the underlying explanation was the impact of a giant meteorite. He guides us along the path that he and dozens of colleagues subsequently followed as--in true scientific tradition--they combined seemingly outrageous hypotheses, painstaking research, and equal parts good and bad luck as they worked toward the discovery of what turned out to be the largest impact crater in the U.S. We join Poag in the lab, on deep-sea drilling ships, on the road for clues in Virginia, and in heated debates about his findings. He introduces us in clear, accessible language to the science behind meteorite impacts, to life and death on Earth thirty-five million years ago, and to the ways in which the meteorite shaped the Chesapeake Bay area by, for example, determining the Bay's very location and creating the notoriously briny groundwater underneath Virginia.
This is a compelling work of geological detective work and a paean to the joys and satisfactions of a life in science.
Customer Reviews:
America's biggest meteor strike unmasked........2002-06-03
The book presents an interesting first-person study of how the 53 mile-wide Chesapeake impact structure was identified. The 40-million year-old feature is not apparent from surface observation, and its unmasking forms this classic tale of scientific detective work at is finest. The author is not hesitant in issuing praise to those who knew some atypical feature was present, but who lacked the means or opportunity to categorically identify the structure for what it was. In this respect, the narrative is delightfully free of much of the acrimony that has marked so many of the works about the Chixulub dinosaur killer.
The book's text is highly readable and explains in an unpatronizing manner many of the tools and concepts used in solving this great scientific puzzle. Also, the book's author doesn't allow himself to be bogged down in minutiae, an all-to-easy peril in a work of this nature.
The book is recommended to any teen or adult with a limited background in science, and to any and all persons with an interest in earth science or the scientific method in action. I liked it very much. Enjoy.
I Love A Good Mystery.......2002-02-10
Geology is a fun science and part of the fun is due to the historical nature of much of geology - geology is all about solving ancient mysteries. Chesapeake Invader by C. Wylie Poag excellenty describes the solving of one such geological mystery. Starting in the middle of the 20th-Century, geologists began to find unusual rock formations in coastal Virginia that didn't have a garden variety geologic explanation. The plate tectonics revolution, which provided so many solutions to so many geologic conundrums, didn't unravel these weird East Coast rocks. This mystery had to wait until humans wrapped their minds around one of the last great discoveries of geology, the realization that asteroid and comet impacts are an important force in our Solar System and that the Earth is not immune from the devastation of these impacts. Poag gives the reader a good glimpse of how geologists [and scientists in general] go about solving problems. Folks who enjoy learning about impacts, but are tired of reading about the end of Cretaceous impact, should enjoy Chesapeake Invader as a welcome change of pace. [If you haven't read enough about the end of Cretaceous impact, I would highly recommend The End Of The Dinosaurs by Charles Frankel and Night Comes To The Cretaceous by James Lawrence Powell.] I enjoyed going along for the ride while C. Wylie Poag solved this great geological mystery and I recommend that you also take this ride.
Good science, readable science.......2001-12-31
This book is well-written non-fiction.
Poag tells of a fifty-year geological research project on the East Coast of North America. He tells us how the findings of several natural sciences have combined to demonstrate, beyond reasonable doubt, that a large meteor impacted Earth at Chesapeake Bay, some 35 million years ago. In doing so, Poag teaches the reader about undersea sonic surveying, about core drilling to determine the structures surrounding impact craters of various types, about fossils found in seabed (and former seabed) rocks, and about how those fossils permit approximate dating of sedimentary deposits back to life's origin on earth, some 4 billion years ago.
We now know that large meteor impacts have played a major role in the Earth's evolution. Striking only 35 million years back, Poag's "Chesapeake Invader" was a relatively recent such event. In its closing chapter, his book addresses the present NASA search for the NEXT one.
Paleontologist Tracks Down Killer Meteorite.......2000-05-03
For those interested in the effects of giant meteorites on the earth, this book is worth reading. It is not a novel, more like a documentary, but facinating just the same. The author details his efforts to prove the existance of a giant meteor crater under Chesapeake Bay. Along the way, he details the effects of the strike on the flora and fauna of the time. This is a real-life example of the scientific method applied to geology and paleontology tempered with human nature and a little good luck thrown in.

Computer Modelling of Electronic and Atomic Processes in Solids focuses on the development and application of computer models for the analysis of various solid materials at the atomic, molecular and macroscopic levels. Many of the papers incorporate environmental effects in the computer models, including space effects such as atomic oxygen, radiation, charged ions, microparticle impacts, temperature and photoexcitation.
To better understand the topics covered and their interaction with the various elements presented, the book incorporates a flowchart detailing the contents of the papers and their relationship to the subject areas. The three main sections of the book cover: Atomic and Molecular Processes; Electronic Structure and Processes; and Structure and Properties.
Book Description
Being royally undead isn't all it's cracked up to be--there are still bills to be paid. Luckily, new Queen of the Vampires Betsy Taylor lands her dream job selling designer shoes at Macy's.
But when a string of vampire murders hits St. Paul, Betsy must enlist the help of the one vamp who makes her blood boil: the oh-so-sexy Sinclair. Now, she's really treading on dangerous ground--high heels and all.
Customer Reviews:
Light and funny with a good heart.......2007-10-06
This is the second I've read in this series of books and I really enojoy them. The plot is light, funny and fast paced. The heroine, Betsy, is a nice humorous twist to the typical type of gal we see in this type of book. She's a little bit shallow, very practical, and clearly swimming out of her depth in her new role as Vampire Queen, but the reader still see a good heart underneath it all. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the paranormal fiction/romance genre or "chick lit".
Equally entertaining sequel to "Undead and Unwed.".......2007-10-03
This entertaining vampire romance is the second of a series which incongruously combines chick lit romantic comedy and vampire thriller. Think "Sex in the City" meets "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," from the viewpoint of a new vampire.
The "Queen Betsy" series currently consists of six books, as follows:
1) Undead and Unwed
2) Undead and Unemployed
3) Undead and Unappreciated
4) Undead and Unreturnable
5) Undead and Unpopular
6) Undead and Uneasy.
The book begins with a police record of an interview with a taxi-driver, who describes how he witnessed a supernatural attack, and how a mysterious, tall, very pale, and very beautiful girl had driven off a vampire. Those who have not read the first book will have no idea what is going on, but those who previously read "Undead and Unwed" will recognise Betsy Taylor from the description.
The book is mostly told in the first person by Elizabeth Taylor, who prefers to be called Betsy for obvious reasons and is a most unusual vampire. Unlike other vampires, Betsy can say the name of God, and touch the bible or holy water without being burned or hurt.
At the end of the previous book, Betsy was proclaimed as Queen of the Vampires, but she doesn't want the position. Instead she goes looking for her dream job: as death has not changed her fascination with expensive shoes, Betsy tries to wangle herself a job working on the night shift selling designer shoes at top store Macy's.
But although Betsy would prefer to turn her back on her title as Queen of the Vampires, the other undead are not ready to turn their backs on her. A gang is murdering vampires, and the others want Betsy to do something about it. This kicks off a chain of events which soon becomes hysterical - that is, hysterically funny ...
Mary Davidson has great fun with the incongruity of mixing up the vampire genre with chick-lit romantic comedy. An interesting comparison with other authors who have written entertaining comedies by combining incongruous genres would be with Marianne Mancusi and Robert Frezza.
In the same way that this series gets plenty of laughs by combining chick lit with Vampires, Frezza write two very funny books which combined Vampires and Science Fiction ("McLendon's Syndrome" and "The VMR Theory") and Mancusi combined chick lit with time travel in "A Connecticut Fashionista at King Arthur's Court" and "A Hoboken Hipster in Sherwood Forest." Anyone who likes the "Queen Betsy" series is likely to enjoy all four of those, and vice versa, if you have read and enjoyed one of those books you may well enjoy this one.
OK, this is never going to win the Booker Prize or any other great award for classic literature but if you have the right sort of sense of humour, it is pretty good fun. I can recommend both "Undead and Unwed" and "Undead and Unemployed," and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
Undead and Unemployed.......2007-08-31
MaryJanice give a new twist to vampire stories....not the usual dark love novel , or getting out of control Anita Blake series - just a great story.
Boring.......2007-07-26
I have been reading this book for a few days now and CAN'T seem to get through it. I don't think it is funny and find it to be rather boring. I was thinking about giving up on it until I came on here and read the reviews. I guess I have to stick with it since so many people raved about it--PAINFUL!!
Undead and Unemployed.......2007-03-29
Oh no, no no no no (she says shaking her head) another series of books I just HAVE to read, the first two where consumed with great zest, they are halarious with some raucuous laugh out loud moments ..... the credit card, it really has to go !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! shopping (she says in defeat)

Fans of Mary Kay Andrews, Fannie Flagg, and the Sweet Potato Queens won't miss this sensational novel from the author of Since You're Leaving Anyway, Take Out the Trash. Picking up where they left off, Debbie Sue Overstreet and her pal, Edwina, are running the Styling Station and their detective agency the Domestic Equalizers. For them, there's no crime or heartbreak that a little hairspray and a little poking around can't solve! But when Paige McBride comes to town-a little bit spoiled and a whole lot rich the three soon find themselves knee deep in the muck of a horse-thievin' and husband-cheatin' escapade that sets the town of Saltlick, TX, on its ear. By the end, hair will be styled, casseroles will burn, and creeps will be brought to justice if Equalizers have their way. And love will, of course, conquer all.
Customer Reviews:
Much Fun!!!.......2006-06-03
Paige McBride has always been a pampered child. Daddy McBride has raised Paige in a lifestyle she has found success in, until one day Daddy tells her she is on her own. Needless to say, Paige has no idea what to do or how to get a job. Paige spent six years stumbling from colege to college but never came away with a college degree. Daddy steps in for one of the final times and helps Paige find a job she could only dream of having. She is offered a job as an assistant to a horse cutter. The catch is she has to move to a town, Salt Lick, Texas, in the middle of nowhere.
Spur Atwater finds himself nearly penniless and crossing his fingers and hoping his loan comes through so he can fulfill his dream of being a vet. New to Salt Lick, Texas as well, being single and sexy poses for an interesting welcome.
Paige meets 2 interesting ladies, Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwinda Perkins-Martin, near her first day in town and they become fast friends. Debbie Sue and Edwina, hair dressers by day, private investigators by night, find themselves embroiled in a plan to thrwart a horse stealing ring. Paige is enlisted in the plan, but her relationship with Spur hangs in the balance. Can their love survive her attempts to help her friends and save the horses which are so dear to her?
Paige and Spur get themselves entangled with each other in more ways than one throughout this fun read.
Add in some interesting Texas characters, misunderstandings, good food, and a lock in in a convenience store cooler and you have a hillarious story which reads quickly and leaves you wanting more when the story ends.
I initially got this book because the title intrigued me but I found this book to be an great read. I read through it so fast I was surprised when it was over. I will look for her first book.
