This book introduces the reader to the use of Monte Carlo methods for solving practical problems in radiation transport, and will also serve as a reference work for practitioners in the field. It assumes the reader has a general knowledge of calculus and radiation physics, and a knowledge of Fortran programming, but assumes no prior knowledge of stochastic methods or statistical physics. The subject is presented by a combination of theoretical development and practical calculations. Because Monte Carlo methods are closely linked to the use of computers, from the beginning the reader is taught to convert the theoretical constructs developed in the text into functional software for use on a personal computer. Example problems provide the reader with an in-depth understanding of the concepts presented and lead to the production of a unique learning tool, a probabilistic framework code that models in a simple manner the features of production of Monte Carlo transport codes. This framework code is developed in stages such that every function is understood, tested, and demonstrated - random sampling, generating random numbers, implementing geometric models, using variance reduction, tracking particles in a random walk, testing the thoroughness with which the problem phase space is sampled, scoring detectors, and obtaining estimates of uncertainty in results. Advanced topics covered include criticality, correlated sampling, adjoint transport, and neutron thermalization.
Monte Carlo codes can produce highly precise wrong answers. The probability of this occurring is increased if production codes are run as opaque, `black boxes' of software. This text attempts to make Monte Carlo into a comprehensible, usable tool for solving practical transport problems. It is suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and researchers who wish to expand their knowledge of the Monte Carlo technique.

Radiation Shielding.......2000-01-09

I have read 'Radiation Shielding' from cover to cover,and I must say that Shultis hit the nail on the head for almost every question I wanted answered.This book was very helpful in that it provided great detail for shielding procedures, step by step,unlike many other books I read.The only problem I found with this textbook is that the binding on it is weak,and comes off easily. Plus the pages have a strong smell of sulfur(fart) .This was probably due to a problem with the manufacture of the paper,but don't worry,it's not that bad.Thumbs up.Great book.

Having had the authors as professors while getting my nuclear engineering degree, I can assure you that these are two professionals that know what they are talking about. The book is an excellent reference for anyone involved in radiation shielding. If you are teaching a class related to this, you must have this book. The book presents a very thorough technical discussion of all aspects regarding radiation shielding.

This book provides an excellent overview of modern radiation shielding analysis. It includes a very solid introduction to concepts of ionizing radiation and radiation shielding. All references are were very much up-to-date and a lot of attention is being paid to advanced techniques. The book is a must for anyone who is or will be involved in serious radiation shielding engineering.

For at least two decades the career of Edward Said has defined what it means to be a public intellectual today. Although attacked as a terrorist and derided as a fraud for his work on behalf of his fellow Palestinians, Said’s importance extends far beyond his political activism. In this volume a distinguished group of scholars assesses nearly every aspect of Said’s workâhis contributions to postcolonial theory, his work on racism and ethnicity, his aesthetics and his resistance to the aestheticization of politics, his concepts of figuration, his assessment of the role of the exile in a metropolitan culture, and his work on music and the visual arts.
In two separate interviews, Said himself comments on a variety of topics, among them the response of the American Jewish community to his political efforts in the Middle East. Yet even as the Palestinian struggle finds a central place in his work, it is essentialâas the contributors demonstrateâto see that this struggle rests on and gives power to his general "critique of colonizers" and is not simply the outgrowth of a local nationalism.
