            Book Description

Many complex molecular interactions are involved in the development of the mammalian brain. Molecules serving as guidance cues for migratory cells, growing axons and for recognition of postsynaptic targets are a major topic for research because they are directly involved in the formation of neuronal circuits, thus creating the foundation for subsequent functional refinement through interactions with the environment. In addition, most guidance cue molecules are also involved in plasticity, damage repair and regeneration in the adult brain.

This volume reviews current knowledge on major classes of molecules involved in: guidance of growing axons; tau proteins involved in the establishment of axonal polarity, outgrowth and contact recognition; gangliosides and lectins involved in neuronal migration, neurite outgrowth and contact recognition; and myelin molecules that inhibit nerve regeneration.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A688633. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This research investigates the problems inherent in Decision Support Systems (DSS) that depend on the quality and accuracy of legacy information as the basis for decision making. A Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) was developed at Naval Postgraduate School to analyze the comparative desirability of Army Reserve Unit locations. The Army Reserve Installation Evaluation System (ARIES) integrates a GIS mapping engine and a decision model solver in a flexible environment that leverages operational legacy database information for decision-making. Data quality problems from legacy sources motivated the development of a data migration plan to transform the source data into an architecture optimized for the ARIES SDSS application. This research developed a prototype Data Migration Tool (DMT) to extract the relevant source data into a centralized repository for the SDSS with an acceptable degree of data quality to support SDSS outcomes. Six data quality attributes were identified: accuracy, completeness, consistency, timeliness, uniqueness, and validity. The ARIES DMT focused on data validity and developed techniques for measuring and enforcing data validity. The DMT also specified individual responsibilities for data administration, development of data retrieval routines, and data quality assessment. Significant system performance enhancements resulted from implementation of the DMT by leveraging the spatial aspects of the underlying repository through geographic queries that efficiently localized subsets of the data files.

                Book Description

Spatial data quality, which helps minimize the risks of data misuse in a specific decision-making context, is explained in this book that provides perspectives on how to evaluate the quality of vector or raster data for both the data producer and the data user. Key concepts covered include describing the quality of vector or raster data, enhancing its quality, evaluating and documenting it using metadata, communicating it to users, and relating it to the decision-making process.

                        Book Description

As research in the geosciences and social sciences becomes increasingly dependent on computers, applications such as geographical information systems are becoming indispensable tools. But the digital representations of phenomena that these systems require are often of poor quality, leading to inaccurate results, uncertainty, error propagation, and potentially legal liability. Spatial data quality has become an essential research topic within geographical information science. This book covers many of the cutting-edge research issues related to spatial data quality, including measurement in GIS and geostatistics, the modeling of spatial objects that have inherent uncertainty, spatial data quality control, quality management, communicating uncertainty and resolution, reasoning and decision-making, visualization of uncertainty and error metadata. Spatial Data Quality will be of interest to anyone undertaking research using GIS and related technologies.

                          Book Description

Elements of Spatial Data Quality outlines the need and suggests potential categories for the content of a comprehensive statement of data quality that must be imbedded in the metadata that accompanies the transfer of a digital spatial data file or is available in a separate metadata catalog. Members of the International Cartographic Association's Commission on Spatial Data Quality have identified seven elements of data quality: positional accuracy, attribute accuracy, completeness, logical consistency, lineage, semantic accuracy and temporal information. In the book the authors describe: components of each data quality element, possible metrics that can be used to measure the quality of each criteria, possible testing and rating schemes, and how these parameters might differ from a producer or user point of view. Finally no volume of this nature would be complete without a chapter devoted to necessary future research in this subject ar

                                  Book Description

R.S. Rivlin is one of the principal architects of nonlinear continuum mechanics: His work on the mechanics of rubber (in the 1940s and 50s) established the basis of finite elasticity theory. These volumes make most of his scientific papers available again and show the full scope and significance of his contributions.
