    Book Description

This collection explores eighteenth-century theories of international market competition that continue to be relevant for the twenty-first century. "Jealousy of trade" refers to a particular conjunction between politics and the economy that emerged when success in international trade became a matter of the military and political survival of nations. Today, it would be called "economic nationalism," and in this book Istvan Hont connects the commercial politics of nationalism and globalization in the eighteenth century to theories of commercial society and Enlightenment ideas of the economic limits of politics.

The book begins with an analysis of how the notion of "commerce" was added to Hobbes's "state of nature" by Samuel Pufendorf. Hont then considers British neo-Machiavellian political economy after the Glorious Revolution. From there he moves to a novel interpretation of the political economy of the Scottish Enlightenment, particularly of David Hume and Adam Smith, concluding with a conceptual history of nation-state and nationalism in the French Revolution.

Jealousy of Trade combines political theory with intellectual history, illuminating the past but also considering the challenges of today.

                    Book Description

The relation between quantum theory and the theory of gravitation remains one of the most outstanding unresolved issues of modern physics. According to general expectation, general relativity as well as quantum (field) theory in a fixed background spacetime cannot be fundamentally correct. Hence there should exist a broader theory comprising both in appropriate limits, i.e., quantum gravity. This book gives readers a comprehensive introduction accessible to interested non-experts to the main issues surrounding the search for quantum gravity. These issues relate to fundamental questions concerning the various formalisms of quantization; specific questions concerning concrete processes, like gravitational collapse or black-hole evaporation; and the all important question concerning the possibility of experimental tests of quantum-gravity effects.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    4 out of 5 stars Exciting!.......2007-06-12

This was a fun book to read - the plot was full or action and suspense, and the romance was very cute and natural! I related to the way Maggie wanted to protect her daughter at all costs, and the rebellious, smart-mouthed attitude of Melanie was familiar to me too.

1 out of 5 stars Definitely One Star.......2007-05-27

I listened to the audiobook of Full Scoop and was bored within the first 20 minutes. It was very predictable and the main characters did not have any chemistry. I have enjoyed some of her other romance books, including her Stephanie Plum series, but this one was a dud.

                    1 out of 5 stars A Grueling Read.......2006-12-04

After reading all of the Stephanie Plum series, I was hopeful this book would be equally entertaining. Sadly not the case. It took tenacity, if not OCD, to finish it. The characters are poorly developed, the plot smacks of artificiality. Overall, I felt it to be a romance novel posing as a mystery, with mediocre writing to boot.

My impression is Janet Evanovich's role is only to make the book more marketable. She could not possibly have played a major part in its creation! So who is Charlotte Hughes to pull this off?

                    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-11-17

I started the Full series a few years back when I needed an Evanovich fix between Plum books. I loved the first 3, after that I can't say they have lived up to my expectations. This latest is the worse of all, it reminds of the 180 page romance novels of the early 70's, you know the ones you'd 6 of every month in the mail? Juvenile and unrealistic, sorry Janet but this one is a stinker for those of us used to the great Stephanie Plum novels and even the Barnaby series. Lorelei King does her best, but even a great reader can't help this book.

                    2 out of 5 stars Don't expect Stephanie Plum.......2006-08-30

If you read this expecting the humor and fast pace of a Stephanie Plum novel, you'll be disappointed. It doesn't seem like JE did any more than wave a magic wand over these books.

Ice Cream: The Full Scoop describes the history of home and commercial ice cream making, from its hand-cranked beginnings to the origins of the ice cream cone and the modern ice cream factory. Packed with Gibbons' signature drawings, Ice Cream offers a fine visual and written history.

4 out of 5 stars Ice Cream: The Full Scoop.......2006-08-06

Gibbons continues to provide quality non-fiction for the beginning reader. In Ice Cream, she first describes how ice cream was developed, beginning with the Chinese who mixed snow, milk and rice together to Nancy Johnson, who in 1841 invented the hand-cranked ice-cream maker. The excellent diagram of the parts of the ice-cream maker provide an interesting understanding of how people enjoyed this treat before the advent of the refrigerated supermarket product. The second part of the book describes the ice-cream business, beginning with the Jersey cow. The reader follows the milk from the cooling tank through the transportation system to its arrival at the ice-cream factory. Once there, Gibbons takes us on a tour of the various steps that are necessary for the production of the popular treat, including the invention of the ice-cream cone and the various ways ice cream is served and additional ice cream trivia. The illustrations are colorful and simple with just the right amount of detail to support the text. Children and their parents who love ice-cream will want to dip into this book.

Dear Reader,Welcome to the world of Jamie Swift and Max Holt! My good friend Charlotte Hughes and I have teamed up to create a series of books featuring these two characters and they've taken on a life of their own! These books are not set in the same world as my Stephanie Plum novels, but what they have in common is lovable, dysfunctional characters, villains you love to hate, and a cross-eyed way of looking at life. Jamie and Max have intense chemistry-even though they drive each other crazy. Max thinks Jamie is a magnet for trouble and Jamie thinks Max is the most annoyingly sexy, mysterious man she's ever met. She knows she should stay away from him. But boy, oh boy, do the sparks fly when they get together. Jamie is a newspaper owner from a small southern town. And in Full Speed, she's after the story of a lifetime. Max Holt is right in the middle of that story, and so Jamie tracks down the millionaire playboy, forcing him to take her on as partner. What follows is a story of a corrupt minister, a gang of mobsters on the loose, a hound dog called Fleas, a wise-cracking computer genius, and lots of love in the fast lane. Not to mention plenty of steamy action between Jamie and Max. So have fun with Full Speed. We're going to sign off now and get back to creating more romantic adventures between Jamie Swift and Max Holt. Enjoy and happy reading! Janet and Charlotte
