Book Description
The 2nd edition of this successful book has several new features. The calibration discussion of the basic LIBOR market model has been enriched considerably, with an analysis of the impact of the swaptions interpolation technique and of the exogenous instantaneous correlation on the calibration outputs. A discussion of historical estimation of the instantaneous correlation matrix and of rank reduction has been added, and a LIBOR-model consistent swaption-volatility interpolation technique has been introduced.
The old sections devoted to the smile issue in the LIBOR market model have been enlarged into several new chapters. New sections on local-volatility dynamics, and on stochastic volatility models have been added, with a thorough treatment of the recently developed uncertain-volatility approach. Examples of calibrations to real market data are now considered.
The fast-growing interest for hybrid products has led to new chapters. A special focus here is devoted to the pricing of inflation-linked derivatives.
The three final new chapters of this second edition are devoted to credit. Since Credit Derivatives are increasingly fundamental, and since in the reduced-form modeling framework much of the technique involved is analogous to interest-rate modeling, Credit Derivatives -- mostly Credit Default Swaps (CDS), CDS Options and Constant Maturity CDS - are discussed, building on the basic short rate-models and market models introduced earlier for the default-free market. Counterparty risk in interest rate payoff valuation is also considered, motivated by the recent Basel II framework developments.
Customer Reviews:
Best book on interest rate models.......2002-12-14
This is the best book available on interest rate models. Very detailed. Much more focused and readable than Rebonato's book. More pragmatic and explicit than Musiela and Rutkowski. Not as theoretical as Hunt and Kennedy. James and Webber also looks very good, but I'm not that familiar with it. All other books have only bits and pieces on interest rates.
The best book I have read on the subject.......2002-05-06
With all the due respect to the other authors I would say that if one is interested in a good theoretical book whihc is also good on the implementation side then the book of Brigo and Mercurion is definetly the best book I have ever read on the subject.
Anyone interested in implementing the LMM/BGM/MSS model in practice is well advised to read it.
I would just say that this is certainly a must have in the field.
New stuff and nice overview: hard to beat!.......2002-01-17
In the late nineties I went through Brigo's innovative work on stochastic nonlinear filtering with differential geometry techniques. I was favorably impressed by results and style, particularly in his dissertation and in his 'geometry in present day science' very readable overview. Interesting results are found and nicely told with accurate - but not pointlessly complicated - advanced mathematics for the problems at hand, I reasoned.
I've followed a similar path from control to finance, and having worked with interest rate models, I couldn't help but order this Brigo-Mercurio book. I had high expectations 'cause these two guys are working in a bank on the real thing.
Sure enough I'm not disappointed.
1-factor models are handled with great care, a ton of formulas and recipes are given. I've never seen this kind of analysis of pricing with Gaussian 1-f models. The new upgrade of the CIR model is interesting and accurate. "CIR++" is now my favorite 1-f model. I like the treatment of lognormal 1-f models and the explanation of Monte Carlo and trees -- the flow-chart for Bermudan swaptions is crystal clear! Plots of market implied structures and volatility calibration are useful additions.
The chapter on 2-f extensions has one of the best discussions on volatility, and two tons of useful formulas/recipes. Two dimensional trees!
The HJM chapter size is OK. I agree - the useful models embedded in HJM are short rate models and market models.
Market models - these three chapters alone are worth the book. You'll find yourself nodding as you read the guided tour. They make it look easy all the time. The exposition is focused, clear, intuitive, detailed. There's also new stuff, just check the calibration discussion! Smile modeling begins with a brilliant tour and ends with Brigo-Mercurio's new approach - the mixing dynamics - deserving a whole chapter if expanded.
The detailed explanation on products is a much welcome original addition. Cross currency derivatives!
Quotes - as in Brigo's old work - are a pleasant diversion while reading. The 500 and more pages are a treat given the competitive price.
Still there's room for improvements - more "CIR2++"! Something on 3-f models. Historical estimation of the correlation matrix and low-rank optimized approximations. Expand smile modeling! More hedging. Something on structured products. Cross currency libor model. chapter 9 - other interest rate models - sounds out of place and can be suppressed for other things.
This book rings true and has useful teachings for students, academics and practitioners. Although it requires some background in stochastic calculus, it's hard to beat on the pricing front. Kudos to Brigo and Mercurio! It only harms there aren't enough books like this.
Nicely written overview of interest rate models.......2001-12-15
This recent book, written by two Italian "quants" Mercurio & Brigo, gives a nice and accessible overview of interest rate models which is a compromise between the practitioner viewpoint, expressed for ex. in Rebonato's book "Interet Rate option models"
and the theoretical viewpoint such as the one in Musiela & Rutkowski.
The authors, themselves PhDs in quantitative finance/ applied maths, wrote this book while working as quants in an Italian bank and this first hand contact with the market gave them a
practical view on the subject which markes this book very interesting.
The book contains a "rational" catalogue of models used in practice ( as opposed to models which are impossible to implement!).
In contrast with academic books on interest rate modeling which deal with HJM formulation, there is a lot of emphasis here on LIBOR and Swap market models
(BGM -Jamshidian models) which reflects the current market practice. This is a positive point since there are not many books with details on implementing and using these "market models".
Part II: Interest rate models in practice is particularly useful because it deals with implementation and calibration which, as any practitioner knows, are important and usually delicate issues.
However calibration issues are dealt with somewhat lightly, especially recent developments on modeling cap/swaption smiles
are not included here.
This book can also be used for a graduate level/PhD course on interest rate models.
There are a lot of numerical examples in the book and mathematics is kept to the necessary level while keeping the
approach both rigorous and understandable.
Overall, it is one of the best books written on the subject.
I highly recommend it to PhD students, quants and researchers interested in this field.
Well written and useful book.......2001-11-04
In my humble opinion, this is the best book on Interest Rate modeling out there. The writing style is clear and focused and the appendices are fantastic. The book is rigorous but someone with some background in Stochastic Calculus will find it easy to follow. If you need refresher, dont worry the authors have you covered, see the appendix on Stochastic Calculus. Not an introductory book. Very exciting book.

Book Description
Interest rate swaps--used globally by both corporate finance departments and investment firms to control interest payments, manage debt, and enhance investment portfolios--constitute a growing 1.9 trillion market. Now, financial personnel, swap traders, corporate treasurers, and professional cash managers can turn to this clear, authoritative guide to master all the methodologies used in the international swap market. Written for anyone whose work is touched by swap market activity, the guide uses diagramming techniques to first explain what swaps are, and how and why they are traded. It then addresses more sophisticated financial transactions, such as rate setting, analysis of swap desks, market-to-market, speculating, and financial statements. Readers will find detailed coverage of more than two dozen derivative products, including spreadlocks, swaptions, caps, and flows, and learn how swap trading works in foreign currencies and interest rates. Critical light is also shed on questions regulators are currently raising about the security and future of the swaps markets.
Customer Reviews:
Me thinks some reviewers protest too much.......2004-07-11
This book has been damned for being too simplistic, therefore consign it to the trash cart, or so we are expected to do. But given the relative novelty of these financial products simplicity in the best sense of word could be seen as a virtue in any work dealing with this topic. So, why the evident annoyance from some. Could it be that this work dissolves some of the mystery involved, and threatens some closed shop in these markets ?
Outdated and Shallow.......1999-09-02
The book easily shows its age in its focus on standards and issues which have long ago fallen by the wayside in this dynamic market. Far worse is that the book is preciously short on quantitative and analytic methods, and long on third-grade-teacher types of admonishments. I read the whole book becasue I paid for it, there are better, more up-to-date volumes out there. Could possibly be re-named "Swaps for English Majors", although, English majors as a group might correctly be upset at this association.

Book Description
A central focus of scholarly discourse in law is the phenomenon of endemic change in the substantive content of judicial doctrine, the manifest structure of rules and principles that determine the outcomes of litigated disputes. This discourse constitutes a debate over whether this phenomenon undermines the legitimacy of the judicial process in the Rule of Law system by which the society of the United States is popularly perceived to be governed. Pragmatism and Judicial Choice is a collection of essays that use the concepts of semiotics to subject various aspects of the judicial process in the United States to analysis and critique for the purpose of demonstrating that endemic instability does not undermine judicial legitimacy, but instead is an inevitable consequence of the judicial process when it is functioning in a manner consistent with its institutional nature.

Book Description
Interweaving modern and classical ideas of physics, Eugene Hecht offers students a fresh, narratively compelling presentation that emphasizes how things work. Unlike other texts for the course, Hecht uses the connection between symmetry principles and conservation law as a unifying theme to order the subject of physics and to help students understand physics as more than just a series of topics. Hecht draws from the ideas of biology, medicine, geology, astronomy, meteorology, and architecture to offer students a text that is both pragmatic and interdisciplinary.

Book Description
The latest volume in the gripping saga of Yorick Brown, an unemployed and unmotivated slacker that discovers that he is the only male left in a world inhabited solely by women after a plague of unknown origin instantly kills every mammal with a Y chromosome.Accompanied by his mischievous monkey and the mysterious Agent 355, Yorick embarks on a transcontinental journey to find his girlfriend and discover why he is the last man on Earth. This volume finds Yorick, Agent 355 and Dr. Mann traveling across the Pacific to Japan in pursuit of Yorick's stolen monkey Ampersand, whose innards may hold the key to mankind's future
Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Yorick is a bit confused and conflicted, when Agent 355 and Dr Mann have a fling.
Apart from this, the gang hitch a ride on a pirate ship, as eventually Yorick wants to find his girlfriend Beth, who is in Australia. He finds somewhat of a kindred spirit in the pirate captain, if you forget about the fact that she is a pirate.
Problems escalate when the Australian navy and spies become involved.
Good, but perhaps weakest book in series.......2007-07-06
This trade paperback collects issues #32-36 of the excellent DC Comics series. All but the last feature guest artists instead of co-creator Pia Guerra. Though the series is still enjoyable, I'd echo some other reviewers' statements about this seeming like filler material. Agent 355, Dr. Mann and stowaway Yorick hitch a ride across the Pacific on a commercial ship 'The Whale' in pursuit of Ampersand and his kidnapper. This volume's title suggests one of the budding romances among the travelers. Meanwhile, an Australian submarine suspects 'The Whale' of sinister motives and draws close. The final chapter provides backstory of Beth and her relationship with Yorick.
Volume 6 also offers the highest cost to issue ratio since Volume 2. Volume 5 contained eight issues for a list price of $15 US.
better and better.......2007-03-17
the first volume of Y hooked me and each book gets better and better. i don't know how Vaughan does it. if you're a fan of his other work (Runaways), you'll probably dig this, his more-adult fare.
Australian Troubles.......2006-02-20
After the abduction of Ampersand, the monkey that holds the key to the continuing survival of humanity, Yorick Brown, the last man on Earth, Agent 355, his bodyguard, and Dr. Allison Mann, a geneticist whose research could help repopulate the planet, must travel to Japan to get back the monkey. Ampersand produces a chemical that made himself and Yorick immune to the effects of a devastating plague that wiped out every other male mammal on the planet.
The trio hitches a ride on a cargo vessel in order to get to Japan. Once again, problems arise when a few crewmembers discover the existence of Yorick, and the captain invites him to spend the night in her quarters. Meanwhile, (the straight) Agent 355, who has reached a breaking point and requires some kind of physical contact, engages in sexual intercourse with Allison, who was recently revealed as a lesbian. This complicates things between the group, but it becomes the least of their worries when an Australian submarine appears and tries to blow up the ship.
Also, in the arc "Boy Loses Girl", we see what Yorick's girlfriend Beth has been up to ever since the plague. Using a mixture of flashbacks and dream sequences, we learn how Yorick and Beth met, what happened to her right after the plague, and where she has been since we last saw her about to get captured by Aboriginals.
While the story isn't as good as in the previous arc, it is still great. Brian K. Vaughan once again shows why he is one of the best comic book writers around. Y: The Last Man is a great series, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
The weaker part of the Y series.......2006-02-07
Y: The Last Man is one of the best comics I've read in 20 years, and if you're considering buying this book, it's likely that you've already read all of the series leading up to it (and if not, you shouldn't be buying this). While I give the series 5 stars, Book 6 of the collection scores considerably lower because it consists of pretty much "filler" material, in that the stories are interesting, but don't really move the story along and most of it could have been left out.
Book 6 covers issues #32-36 of the comic, and the storyline involves the kidnapping of Yorick's monkey, Ampersand, as Yorick (the last man on Earth), Agent 355, and Dr. Mann cross the Pacific aboard a ship to try to find him. The title refers to the lesbian encounter that takes place between Agent 355 and Dr. Mann (as revealed already on the cover of the book), and is pretty much the most exciting thing that happens.
The stories are okay, but they're not as great as some of the previous book and you won't be on the edge of your seat while reading it. You could probably even skip this book alltogether and just read a one paragraph summary of events and be okay, but it's so cheap and the story overall is so good that I do recommend picking it up anyway.

Power, Politics, and Polite Society.......2000-04-10
In "The Last of The Southern Girls", William Morris sets himself up for the ambitious task of combining the contradictions and complications of life in our Nation's capital with the wiles and trials of Southern feminity. As a Southern girl who moved to Washington, D.C. directly follwing graduation, I believe Morris accurately depicts the lovely and despicable traits of two cultures where social obligations and expectations supercede reality. Morris does an especially effective job of describing the tightrope walked by those involved in the delicate role of "public servant," where every move for "the people" must also contribute to one's own personal fame and power.
A fast read about two worlds where words mean nothing and everything at the same time - a must for anyone interested in politics.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for all ages.......2005-12-25
Ok first of all let me explain where this book fits into the marvel universe, Spider-girl is an "elseworlds" "what if?" spin off universe where peter parker got old, had a daughter who took up his job as web swinger, and now works for the police as a CSI type of lab guy.
Spider-girl is a monthly book and it did so well they had a bunch of spin off books in the "MC2" universe, all of them cancelled sadly, well the real treat was seeing the kids of old heroes taking on the world now but also seeing what happen to all the old guys and gals..that's where this book comes in.
People wanted more so they did this book, a mini series, highlighting the universe of MC2, an old catain america who is facing the limits that come with old age, young brats who think they are better than the old guys, heroes who have thrown in the towl and started a family, this creates a lot of great moments, the captain america stuff i think is the best, the scene in front of the mirror as he looks at his grey hair, scarred body and thinks about how old he is, or as he tries to cover a stumble when training with the young kids..classic.
MC2 is a line of comics for all ages, they lose no impact for older readers, but you don't get the sex and violence many books have these days, spider-girl is not a busty blond who wears almost nothing, in fact most of the girls are extremely well covered up, this is one you can give to your kids with no worry, in fact given the strong women in the book i would say its great for girls, give them a good solid role model in spider-girl.
The book will be a treat to long time MC2 fans who know the characters, but you need not know a thing to enjoy it, the line is meant or new readers, only spider-girl has a ongoing book anyway, this is just a grand romp that takes you back a little to the old days of super heroes.
And i you liekd this then get spider-girl, she has a few digests out now, real cheap, and written by the same guy so you can expect the same as you got here.

Book Description
In the closing days of the twentieth century an elderly writer wanders the streets of Vilnius, Lithuania, possessed by the need to photograph the young mothers of the city. In their faces and the faces of their children he sees the reflection of a secret that haunts him. A secret he has spent years trying to bury. In a decaying back street of the city a woman struggles to raise her family. As her son dreams of a better life, she is torn between Vilnius' twilight world of prostitution and her deter-mination to secure hope for her children. She too is haunted by memories that rob her of sleep. In Vilnius the rubble of the Jewish ghetto lies side by side with the fallen statues of communist heroes. Through this tangled debris of past and present the story of the writer's great love and his even greater betrayal finally demands to be told.
Customer Reviews:
Vilnius by candlelight.......2004-10-18
I'll give this novel three stars for effort, but that's about it. Collishaw tries to piece together a story that spans three generations of Vilnius, hoping to make some sense of the Holocaust which took place in Lithuania. Only problem is that it took him some 170 pages to finally get around to the heart of his story, in which the narrator retells his time in Vilnius during the height of WWII.
I thought it was presumptuous, to say the least, for Collishaw, a young Brit, to take the point of view of a Lithuanian penshioner. The book drags lethargically for the first two parts as Collishaw tries desperately to get into the mind of his character and offer some background on mid 90's Vilnius. It seems that Collishaw had been reading too much Kafka and not taking enough notes of what he saw in Vilnius at the time, as Collishaw paints it as a dank, dark, depressing place, which I suppose fits the mood of his anti-hero, Steponas Daumantas. He might as well have called him St. Stephen.
Eventually Collishaw gets around to telling what he set out to tell, and that is a story of the Holocaust. Collishaw draws heavily on poetic and painterly metaphors, creating a very naive version of the Holocaust in Vilnius. It moves along well enough, with a cross-cultural love affair, a good Polish pal, and enough intrigue to keep you interested. But, like the rest of the novel, it doesn't say much about Vilnius. It is simply someone trying to empathize with the history of this city.
I guess one should credit Collishaw for making a game effort. But, that's all it is. He obviously lacks the where-with-all to deal with the material he is trying to assemble in this novel. He covers over it with reasonably compelling characters and an atmospheric setting that will be new to most readers, but in the end this is no more than a bowl of milky soup.
Simply heart breaking.......2004-05-11
This straightforward, beautifully-written novel breaks your heart and puts it back together again. It is not overly ambitious but the author suceeeds in creating a story that draws you in and makes you reflect. It takes courage and skill for a writer to develop serious weaknesses in a character and still have the readers feel compassion for him or her. In most of these situations, I come to dislike the character. But not in this book. Everyone we meet is multi-dimensional and full of complex baggage. They are just trying to survive and find meaning in a cruel and unfair world. But at the end, the book is all about redemption and new opportunities in life no matter how far a person has fallen. What a satisfying experience!
