This book considers the impact of incomplete information and heterogeneous beliefs on investor's optimal portfolio and consumption behavior and equilibrium asset prices. After a brief review of the existing incomplete information literature, the effect of incomplete information on investors' exptected utility, risky asset prices, and interest rates is described. It is demonstrated that increasing the quality of investors' information need not increase their expected utility and the prices of risky assets. The impact of heterogeneous beliefs on investors' portfolio and consumption behavior and equilibrium asset prices is shown to be non-trivial. Heterogeneous beliefs can explain a number of observed phenomena, such as the fact that equilibrium state-price densities are not log-normal, the "smile" in option implied volatility, and the patterns of implied risk aversion reported recently in the literature. It is also demonstrated that financial markets in general do not aggregate information efficiently, a fact that can explain the equity premium puzzle.

Reinvention of Published Work.......2004-01-13

The book has deficiencies that I am sorry to report in the following.
The book is about heterogeneous beliefs. Therefore, a discussion of the
relevant literature would have been appropriate. Unfortunately, the au-
thor does not mention important contributions. I highlight a few omissions.
Mordecai Kurz and his coauthors (1997) have developed a fascinating theory
of heterogeneous, yet rational beliefs. This approach should be part of a
book about the economic implications of heterogeneous beliefs. Stochastic
volatility, to mention just one point that plays also a role in Ziegler's book,
has been shown to arise endogenously in the literature on rational beliefs.
Another approach to heterogeneous beliefs is provided by the recent liter-
ature on 'ambiguity', see Gilboa and Schmeidler (1989), Dow and Werlang
(1992), Epstein and Chen (2002). There, agents are uncertain or ambiguous
about the exact distribution of asset returns. Therefore, they use a whole
class of possible priors and maximize the expected utility under the worst be-
lief. The home bias puzzle, e.g., can be explained by ambiguity, see Epstein
and Miao (2003). Both Kurz's approach as well as the ambiguity literature
have the advantage of having a sound decision theoretic foundation whereas
the assumption of heterogeneous priors is somewhat ad hoc.
Chapter 2 of Ziegler's book has been published before { but not by the
author. In fact, it is the sad reviewer who has published not only that chap-
ter (Riedel (2000a)) but related work earlier(Riedel (2000b), Riedel (2001)).
Parts of Chapter 5 are easy corollaries to Chapter 1 in Riedel (2000b). Un-
fortunately, Ziegler has not read these contributions.

It has been recognised recently that the strange features of the quantum world could be used for new information transmission or processing functions such as quantum cryptography or, more ambitiously, quantum computing. These fascinating perspectives renewed the interest in fundamental quantum properties and lead to important theoretical advances, such as quantum algorithms and quantum error correction codes. On the experimental side, remarkable advances have been achieved in quantum optics, solid state physics or nuclear magnetic resonance. This book presents the lecture notes of the Les Houches Summer School on Quantum entanglement and information processing. Want to find out what happened to the commander of U-234 (Last Mission to Japan)? or like trivia? This is the definitive work in English.

Includes all relevant information, including U-Boot Class, posthumous promotions, birthplace, and in many cases, co-ordinates where last located.

In many cases, U-Boat commanders were enthusiastic young men, only to age quickly during command and the least political of officers in the several services. Anyone wishing to pursue study of any particular commander should begin here.

Excellent cross-referencing by name and submarine, including multiple commanders. Interestingly, U-96, the subject of Das Boot, the film documenting the wartime expoits of a Type VII-C, had four commanders--a rather unusual high.

Due to abbreviations, knowledge of German would be helpful...refer to the German Military Dictionary published by the U.S. Armed Forces for assistance. The losses are, of course, staggering.

This book is priceless. I big on WW II history. Perfect for someone who has a good working knowledge of u-boats (thats means your intrested). I guess the translations are pretty good (I skipped the trans. notes). Probally only for the history buff (WW II). I don't believe your regular joe will be to intrested in this. (4/5 for history buffs / 3/5 for others). I borrowed it from a friend. If I had the extra money. I would buy it. I'm a broke college student. So heres my five cents probally won't buy you much.

Rachlin has compiled an amazing amount of information on a wide range of subjects into this collection. It is a great book for anyone who enjoys history, whether as a hobby or a scholarly pursuit. He keeps the entries short and concise and still manages to provide a thorough explanation on the artifacts. The book is also convienient in its structure, in that you can read a chapter, put it down and leave for months, and then come back and read about another historical treasure.

I found out about this great gem of an educational trivia book by watching the History Channel. Impressively covering curiosities in brief, entertaining chapters--even a non-history buff can be amused.

Ever wonder what DID actually happen to Einsteins brain? Is it still floating in a jar of formaldehyde? Or is some genius walking around with it? Still wondering if the levitating sacred Silver Chalice IS the Holy Grail? What is the Red Magenta and why is it worth possibly over 2 million dollars?

A great coffee table book of useless fascinating information.

Victor Jakob, an aging German physicist in 1918 faces the destruction of Germany after World War I, but even more, tries to salvage something from the realization that his life's work has been in vain. He realizes that his personal search for the world-ether has been as hopeless as the Reich's effort at domination. After a century of living with the implications of quantum mechanics and general relativity, and in a time when string theory attempts to explain it all, it's difficult to understand the unsettling options that bewildered physicists at the turn of the century

Not an easy read, but thought provoking........1999-03-18

Did you know that before quantum physics or atomic physics, classical physics maintained that there was a world ether through which light waves traveled? I had no idea what the struggle this old physicist was having because I did't even know that what he was losing had ever existed. However, I learned a lot, not only about the history of physics, but about a German scientist's view of science and his home land. If you would like a challenge, try this one, but don't take it to the beach.
