                  Book Description

This book covers a hot subject in cell biology; i.e. how the cell environment sends messages to the cell, regulates gene expression, and modulates the cell phenotype. For a long time the extracellular matrix was believed to have only a supporting role for cell attachment. However, it became apparent that the matrix participates actively in cell metabolism. The experiments that led to this conclusion are described in this volume. Progressively, molecules have been identified that transmit this signaling at the cell-matrix interface. Their identity and mechanism of action are also illustrated in this book. Finally, it explains the role the cell-matrix relationship plays in the regulation of cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and the expression of malignancy.

                      Book Description

This monograph introduces modern developments on the bound state problem in Schrödinger potential theory and its applications in particle physics. The Schrödinger equation provides a framework for dealing with energy levels of N-body systems. It was a cornerstone of the quantum revolution in physics of the twenties but re-emerged in the eighties as a powerful tool in the study of spectra and decay properties of mesons and baryons. This book begins with a detailed study of two-body problems, including discussion of general properties, level ordering problems, energy level spacing and decay properties. Following chapters treat relativistic generalisations, and the inverse problem. Finally, 3-body problems and N-body problems are dealt with. Applications in particle and atomic physics are considered, including quarkonium spectroscopy. The emphasis throughout is on showing how the theory can be tested by experiment. Many references are provided.

                      Book Description

Written partly in response to the criticisms of Uncle Tom's Cabin by both white Southerners and black abolitionists, Dred (1856) extends the plantation novel to examine, in the words of the author, "the views and reasonings of those who have bowed down to the yoke, and felt the iron enter their souls." Through the compelling stories of Nina Gordon, the mistress of a slave plantation, and Dred, a black revolutionary, Stowe brings to life conflicting beliefs about race, the institution of slavery, and the need for the radical action that erupted during the 1850s. Exploring the political and spiritual goals that fuel Dred's rebellion, she creates a figure far different from the acquiescent Christian martyr, Uncle Tom.

A bestseller in its day, and praised by many of Stowe's contemporaries including George Eliot, Dred deserves to be read in tandem with Uncle Tom's Cabin and for its compelling story.

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The other book by Harriet Beecher Stowe.......2006-03-16

While Uncle Tom's Cabin will likely remain Harriet Beecher Stowe's best known work, her 1856 novel Dred should not be overlooked. If you like this time period, you should like Dred. Stowe avoids the heavy-handed authorial commentary that characterizes Uncle Tom's Cabin; in other words, she lets the events of the story speak for themselves. The story is slow-burning plantation drama--again, if you're a fan of 19th century literature, you'll love Dred. Dred compares favorably to Moby-Dick, as both novels turn on gradual plots where the reader's bond to the characters becomes crucial. Because the plot takes awhile to develop, the true reward of the novel comes from watching the characters grow and evolve.

This edition features an introduction and notes by Robert Levine, which do a great job of placing Stowe's work in a historical context. Dred should appeal to students of 19th century literature, and anyone else with an interest in slavery and abolition.

5 out of 5 stars Right On, Harriet.......2000-01-14

A compelling and highly readable indictment of slavery in America, "Dred" takes risks that "Uncle Tom's Cabin" did not. The ending of "Dred" is powerful and strong, unlike that of "Uncle Tom", which seemed to advocate ultimately that the slaves should be freed and encourged to return to Africa. Harriet Beecher Stowe is just as sharp in her criticism of the North and she is to the South. She is quick to condemn the passive profiteers of slavery as she is the slaveholder himself. I throughly enjoyed this book. I will read it a secod time.

                                          Book Description

The two leading thinkers in historical geography in the English-speaking world in the mid-twentieth century were Carl Sauer and H.C. Darby. Critical evaluations of the work of Carl Sauer have been published but so far none have examined the contribution of H.C. Darby, although the influence of his ideas on his students and many other contemporary scholars in geography, history and archaeology can be seen in the development of landscape studies and advances in the understanding of processes of geographical change.

This set of twelve previously unpublished essays on historical geography written by Darby in the 1960s explains the basis of his ideas. The material was intended by Darby as a book, but he failed to complete this in his lifetime.

The essays are divided into three quartets of studies relating to England, France and the United States. They are accompanied by contributions from Hugh Clout, T.J. Coppock, Hugh Prince and Michael Williams which both contextualize the material and bring it up-to-date.

I rate this book a 10 because, it always kept you wondering, and it kept getting better and better. It was also good because, this guy in the middle of the book came and rescued Mr.Tucket. Then the chapter ended right at a great part so I wanted to keep reading it.

What I liked about this book is that it was full of action. What I did not like about this book is I would have liked to see if he makes it back to his family and who died in his wagon train. I think this book is good for ages 8 and up because there is a little violence. I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars.

The book is about a kid named Tucket. It takes place on a wagon train to California. For his birthday he is always moving to another place in the world. But this year they are going to California. But the next day it Tucket's Birthday so his mom made him a cake. Then he went to his dad out side the wagon train were he was controlling the horses. His dad got out a bra new shotgun made his size and had Tucket carved into the butt of the shotgun. His dad said he could try it out. So Tucket got out of the wagon train and loaded the gun. Boom!!!! The bullet hit a buffalo chip. Then a pack of Indians came and took him to the tribe. He tried to escape but they said, "If you try to escape we will cut of your hands. Then that night a guy on a hors with one arm said, "Come with me we are going to leave this place. So they left and escape.

When I read this book I gave it a 5 star. It was exciting and it was a cool adventure book.
I did not like how the Indians said, "I'll cut your arms off if you try to escape. But it was still really good. I loved how it was like an adventure and how he escapes. But the really cool part was when the guy shot his gun but he only had one arm. But he was really good.

This story is a wonderful way to move into working with clay. Just as the boy in the story creates his own horse from clay, allowing children to work with clay immediately after hearing this story gives them a chance to experience kinesthetically what they've heard. Rather than going immediately to reflective or responsive writing, use this step to allow the children to spend more time working it through. Then write.

This book has made a lasting impression on my first graders. They loved the story and delighted in the pastel illustrations, especially of the pony in flight. THE MUD PONY fits perfectly in the study of folklore. It appeals not only to the young mind, but to the more mature person as well. The fantasy is delightful and easily grasped by primary children. It makes a fantastic "Read Aloud" book. Read Aloud is a mandatory part of our San Diego Literacy program. We are encouraged to choose only books that "speak" to the children, that instill in them a desire to read more. Moreover, Native American folklore is a precious genre that should be be incorporated into each grade's literary curriculum. Happily, THE MUD PONY can be included in the Multi-cultural category. My students compared and contrasted it with two other books, THE GIFT and EAGLE FEATHERS, both by Owl Goingback. They used the graphic organizer of a triple-circled Venn Diagram which allows for a marvelous overview of the three books, depicting: characters, settings, themes, authors, and illustrators. The children chose a special picture to depict their favorite selections and drew their own rendition onto the diagram. They also searched for "special words" in each book and added them to the large sheet of manila paper covering the front classroom door. All who pass by can read the titles and the information beneath each. As a long-time veteran of the teaching of reading to students of all ages, I am happy to promote THE MUD PONY. Thank you, Caron Lee Cohen, for a book that appeals to the inner child in all of us.

                                              Book Description

One of the more complex and widespread rituals practiced by Native American groups focused on the calumet, a sacred pipe with a feathered shaft. The Calumet Ceremony was a powerful ritual through which members of another tribe were adopted. It also promoted social unity within tribes and facilitated contact and trade between them.
Perhaps the most detailed description of a Calumet Ceremony was recorded near the turn of the century by ethnographer Alice C. Fletcher. Fletcher witnessed the Hako, a version of the Calumet Ceremony practiced by the Chaui clan of the Pawnee. With the invaluable assistance of Tahirussawichi, a Pawnee Ku’rahus or ceremonial leader, and renowned Indian scholar James R. Murie, himself a Pawnee, the author describes in marvelous detail the intricate rhythm and structure of the ceremony. Each song of the Hako is transcribed, translated, interpreted by the Pawnee Ku’rahus, and later analyzed by the author. Fletcher concludes that the Hako promised longevity, fertility, and prosperity to individuals and worked to insure “friendship and peace” between clans and tribes.
The Hako, was originally published in 1904.

George Bird Grinnell is in one point different from other historians of the Old West. He personnally knew many of the cele-brities of that age, and what is written in his books are found-ed upon their stories. Major Frank North and his brother,Captain Luther North /Grinnell's close friend/ commanded this unique force of Indian auxiliaries. Unique, because they never lost a fight or even a single life during the long line of their battles and skirmishes. They patrolled the building of the railway and fought in major battles like the one of the Summit Springs. Also an important part of the book is the short history of the Pawnee Nation and it serves as well as a biography of the North brothers. And all this is in the highly readable style of George Bird Grinnell with full of westernisms.

                                                    Book Description

From the first brilliant rush of horses to the triumphant sight of beautiful bays, chestnuts, shiny blacks, whites, grays, and paints galloping across the pages, Paul Goble's very special book will delight all who love horses and all who love stories that tell of the spiritual connection between people and animals.

His magnificent, detailed paintings evoke an almost forgotten world as he recounts a stirring legend based on the oral tradition of the Pawnee. Focusing on a poor boy and his grandmother, adventure begins when the boy discovers an old, limping horse. Though ridiculed by his tribe, the boy cares for the horse and brings it back to health. In turn, the animal helps his friend achieve greatness, only to be betrayed. The boy's remorse is sincere, but will he be forgiven?

Captivating readers, Caldecott medalist Paul Goble shows how a loving friendship changes the lives of a people.

4 out of 5 stars Mind blowing cosmology.......2004-11-15

I used this book for a paper in college. I was in a class about North American Indians. The book is an excellent recounting of the Skidi Pawnee thoughts and practices about their cosmology, their view of the world and its creation. The strories are very intricate and fun to read! Writing is a little dry. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great Author!.......1998-11-14

I enjoyed this book! I know the author. He was my teacher in Astronomy and a great author! This is a very good book to read, especially if you have interests in the stars or any other aspect of Astronomy. Von Del is a great teacher in his classes as well as in his books! This book is a must have for people building their astronomy/cosmology libraries!

                                                      Book Description

The Pawnee Mythology, originally published in 1906, preserves 148 tales of the Pawnee Indians, who farmed and hunted and lived in earth-covered lodges along the Platte River in Nebraska. The stories, collected from surviving members of four bands—Skidi, Pitahauirat, Kitkehahki, and Chaui—were generally told during intermissions of sacred ceremonies. Many were accompanied by music.
George A. Dorsey recorded these Pawnee myths early in the twentieth century after the tribe’s traumatic removal from their ancestral homeland to Oklahoma. He included stories of instruction concerning supernatural beings, the importance of revering such gifts as the buffalo and corn, and the results of violating nature. Hero tales, forming another group, usually centered on a poor boy who overcame all odds to benefit the tribe. Other tales invited good fortune, recognized wonderful beings like the witch women and spider women, and explained the origin of medicine powers. Coyote tales were meant to amuse while teaching ethics.
