Anybody serious about boosting profits needs to read this book.

Easily read. Short stories reinforce each point. Author's been there and done that. Probably the best business book since "Up the Organization" started it all. More practical than "In Search of Excellence." Be warned. No quick "one minute" cures here. Words like "empowerment" and "infrastructure" and "paradigm" don't appear. Just what it says, a no-nonsense book written in an irreverent and entertaining style.

    Book Description

Stanley Fischer served as First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund from 1994 to 2001. IMF Essays from a Time of Crisis collects sixteen essays written for the most part during his time at the IMF, each updated with Fischer's later reflections on the issues raised. The IMF drew much criticism for some of its actions during Fischer's tenure, and he vigorously defends the "battlefield medicine" practiced by the IMF during a series of economic crises, which included the problems of economic transition in the former Soviet bloc and the Asian financial crisis. Fischer addresses the subsequent calls for reform of the international financial system and makes the case for the IMF as an international lender of last resort.

The first section of essays, "The Role of the IMF and the Reform of the International Financial System," considers the IMF's role in the international financial system in light of the crises of the 1990s. The second section, "Macroeconomic Policy, Stabilization, and Transition," examines such topics as exchange rate regimes, inflation, and Eastern Europe's relation to the European Union. The final section, "Poverty and Development," reflects Fischer's basic belief that economic policies should explicitly target poverty reduction. These engaging and accessible essays will appeal not only to economics students, economists, and policymakers but also to the general reader interested in the international monetary system.

    4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2004-04-23

This lucid, plain, straightforward book is not necessarily the sort of thing one expects from an economist, yet author Stanley Fischer is one of our era's greatest economists. His work at the International Monetary Fund put him on the front lines during some of the twentieth century's most serious economic crises and panics. He has a unique and valuable perspective. His timely discussion of the IMF and the World Bank provides a sobering antidote to the rhetoric of both globalization and anti-globalization. Fischer reminds us that the IMF's many glaring failures and imperfections are the stumbles and flaws of an organization that has done good work to further a noble purpose. It also has proven willing and able to change when the facts do. For good reason, Fischer's essays sometimes read like the arguments of a defense attorney countering prosecutorial accusations. The IMF has come in for so much criticism in recent years that it is refreshing to discover so many points in its favor, and we find it both fair and prudent to consider them carefully.

    Book Description

An ambitious successor to W. Max Corden's highly acclaimed Inflation,
Exchange Rates, and the World Economy, this book addresses topics in
international macroeconomics that have come to the forefront of economic
policy debates in recent years. Covering exchange rate policy, the
European Monetary System, protection and competition, and the
international "non-system" since the collapse of Bretton Woods, Corden
provides a probing analysis of significant economic trends associated
with the increasing integration of the world capital market.

Beginning with essays on exchange rate policy, the current account, and
external effects of fiscal policy, Corden lays out the foundations of
balance-of-payments theory in relation to wage rates, income
distribution, and inflation. Chapters on the European Monetary System
focus on monetary integration and look skeptically at European proposals
to move toward monetary union. Other topical essays discuss the
"competitiveness" problem and the relation between protection and
    macroeconomic policy.

Corden summarizes and clarifies a vast range of work on the coordination
of macroeconomic policies and critically reviews various proposals for
    reforming the international monetary system.

Immediately apparent is Professor Corden's adeptness in narrative explanation: he can convey complex concepts using actual words (rather than relying heavily on drawings and symbols).

He also stretches basic models to convey a more complete picture. For example, he develops the simple Mudell-Fleming model to include real-world effects of disturbances, such as those on wages and real-money supply.

      Book Description

Why was the European Monetary System in 1992-93 swept by waves of disruptive speculative attacks? And what lessons emerged from that episode as regards the future of the European Monetary Union? This book provides a comprehensive assessment of the causes and implications of the 1992-93 crisis of the exchange rate mechanism. Cogent factual presentation, original theoretical analysis, and an interpretation rooted in theory, make this treatment by three leading economists essential reading to understand the process toward economic and political integration in Europe.

            Book Description

This book, now available in paperback, provides the first comprehensive and accessible account of the evolution of exchange rate regimes in the twentieth century. It presents a chronological, non-technical history and in doing so manages to link the past with the present to shed new light on the merits of different exchange rate systems.

Since the golden age before the First World War, the international monetary system has experienced several changes in exchange rate regimes, alternating between fixed and floating rate systems interspersed with managed or dirty floats. The authors examine and assess the evolution of exchange rate regimes since the first world war to the present day. They discuss the forces that have brought about change in order to determine how different regimes affected the economic environment. They consider the merits or otherwise of the respective regimes and assess the evidence and arguments for and against fixed and floating exchange rate systems.

Exchange Rate Regimes in the Twentieth Century provides a coherent and manageable analysis of a complex subject. It will prove invaluable to both undergraduates and postgraduates studying economic history, international economics and monetary economics.

              Book Description

This text systematically traces the development of the British Conservative government's policy to the European Exchange Rate Mechanism from 1979 to 1994. The book provides information and insight into the development of ERM policy, which led to the downfall and discredit of the Conservative leadership. Revealing dramatic episodes in the progress of the policy, including a full account of the deterioration in the relationship between Margaret Thatcher and Nigel Lawson, the author shows how the Thatcher government was torn apart, and the credibility of the Major government undermined.

                        Book Description

The dictionary contains about 30,000 vernacular and literary English names of plants (plus a few American), both wild and cultivated, with their botanical name and a brief account of the names' meaning if known. It was conceived as part of the author's wider interest in plant and tree lore, and ethnobotanical studies.

Knowledge of plant names can give insight into largely forgotten beliefs. Why for example is, or was, the common red poppy known as "Blind Man"? An old superstition has it that if the poppy were put to the eyes it would cause blindness. Such names were probably the result of some taboo against picking the plant. Similarly, other names were likely to have been applied as a result of a country mother's warning to her children against eating poisonous berries. For the warning carries more weight when the name given to the berry reinforces the warning. Many such plants or fruits may be ascribed to the devil, Devil's Berries for Deadly Nightshade is an example.

Names may also be purely descriptive, and can also serve to explain the meaning of the botanical name. Beauty-Berry is an example: it is the name given to the American shrub that belongs to the genus Callicarpa, which is made up of two Greek words that mean beauty and berry.

Literary, or "book" names, have also been included in this dictionary, as being a very important part of the whole. Many of them provide links in the transmission of words through the ages. Thor's Beard, for example, is a book name for "houseleek", and has never been used in the dialect. But it highlights the legend that houseleek is a lightning plant, and by reverse logic is a preserver from fire.

                                  Book Description

Carbonate cements are very common and abundant in clastic sequences. They profoundly influence the quality of hydrocarbon reservoirs and supply important information on palaeoenvironments and the chemical composition and flow patterns of fluids in sedimentary basins. Despite this importance, their distribution patterns in time and space and their geochemical evolution are not yet deeply explored and elucidated. This Special Publication contains 21 review papers and case studies on carbonate cementation in clastic sequences written by invited specialists on the subject. These papers present a wide and deep coverage that enhance our knowledge about carbonate cementation in various clastic depositional environments, tectonic settings and burial histories. The book will be of special interest to researchers, petroleum geologists and teachers and students at the postgraduate level.

                                    Book Description

Hardbound. This book covers the more basic aspects of carbonate minerals and their interaction with aqueous solutions; modern marine carbonate formation and sediments; carbonate diagenesis (early marine, meteoric and burial); the global cycle of carbon and human intervention; and the role of sedimentary carbonates as indicators of stability and changes in the Earth's surface environment. The selected subjects are presented with sufficient background information to enable the non-specialist to understand the basic chemistry involved. Tested on classes taught by the authors, and approved by the students, this comprehensive volume will prove itself to be a valuable reference source to students, researchers and professionals in the fields of oceanography, geochemistry, petrology, environmental science and petroleum geology.

Hardbound. Carbonate diagenesis is a subject of enormous complexity because of the basic chemical reactivity of carbonate minerals. These carbonate minerals react quickly with natural waters that either dissolve the carbonates, or precipitate new carbonates to bring the water into equilibrium with the host carbonate sediments and rocks. These rock-water interactions either create porosity by dissolution, or destroy porosity by the precipitation of carbonate cements into pore spaces. Carbonate Diagenesis and Porosity examines these important relationships in detail.

This volume is published in co-operation with OGCI, and is based on training courses organised by OGCI and taught by Dr. Moore. It is intended to give the working geologist and university graduate student a reasonable overview of carbonate diagenesis and its influence on the evolution of carbonate porosity. It starts with a discussion of the major differences between carbonates and silic

many diagenetic processes which modify textures and obscure the original deposits and fabric. Careful petrographic study with a polarizing microscope is a key element for studying carbonate sediments, as a comparison to field or core logging, and as a precursor to geochemical analysis. This atlas
illustrates in full color numerous features of carbonate rocks and sediments, coverage far more extensive than in any general textbook. It is designed as a practical guide for identifying grain types and textures in carbonates and will appeal alike to undergraduate and graduate students and to
professionals in both research and industrial laboratories.

                                                Book Description

The first quantum mechanics text published that ties directly into a computer algebra system, this book exploits Mathematica(r) throughout for symbolic, numeric, and graphical computing. It is a work designed for computer interaction in an upper-division undergraduate or first-year graduate quantum mechanics course. It is also a toolbox for the practicing physicist seeking to automate a variety of algebraic and numerical tasks with the computer. The book is divided into two parts: "Systems in One Dimension" and "Quantum Dynamics." Part I emphasizes topics from a first-year course on quantum mechanics, while Part II includes more advanced topics. Although the text requires some familiarity with Mathematica, appendices are provided for gaining experience with the software and are referenced throughout the book. The text is task-oriented and integrated with numerous problems and exercises, with hints for working on the computer.

James M. Feagin is a Professor of Physics at California State University, Fullerton. He was educated at Georgia Tech and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he received a Ph.D. in theoretical physics in 1980. He is a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and has served as visiting Professor at the University of Freiburg, Germany. Feagin is the author of numerous articles on collision physics and the dynamics of few-body systems. He has given a number of invited talks and hosted workshops on incorporating computers into the physics curriculum and is presently helping to introduce computing into the Introductory University Physics Project (IUPP) sponsored by the American Institute of Physics.

The previous review was for the 1994 edition of the book. I bought the 2002 version of the book. This edition does not have the disk packaged with the book. Instead a broken link to the TELOS web page is given. After much searching on the internet I did find some of the notebooks for the book. But not the notebooks and ASCII text for each chapter. Without the chapter notebooks the 2002 version is just about worthless. It has only been four years since this edition was published and TELOS does not support the book. So I give the book two stars.

Quantum methods with Mathematica is one of these concept books that combine a traditional subject with a new and powerfull way of presenting and analysing it. Quantum mechanics due to its mathematical nature is particuarly well suited for a Mathematica face-lift. I think the book is well suited for teaching undergraduate QM since you do things instead of just reading about them and that usually works with students. On a proffesional basis, it is not particularky well suited for heavy duty work but having said that to do such a thing would destroy its usefullness as a textbook. It can act as the starting point for more serious work with Mathematica and QM, and I would recommend it as a reference book or teaching aid with no hesitation.

                                                Book Description

Spanning almost seven centuries, this anthology of literary texts ranges from the earliest writings in English up to the time of Chaucer. It encapsulates the foundation and consolidation of literature written in English, culminating in some of the finest works produced in the high Middle Ages. For the second edition, the anthology has been extended to include newly edited versions of key late medieval texts, particularly 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight', substantial extracts from 'Piers Plowman', and selections from the works of Chaucer. The texts are arranged by date of manuscript, foregrounding issues of dating, textual transmission, authorship and audience. Full translations are offered for all the Old and earlier Middle English material, along with marginal glosses for the later texts, making them accessible to those who are not language specialists. A general introduction gives an outline of the key works and the historical context in which they were written.

4 out of 5 stars Much improved second edition.......2004-02-19

The new edition of this anthology is greatly superior to the old one. The previous edition covered Old English quite thoroughly, but only the first half of the Middle English period. Thus, it was difficult to assign it to students in my Middle English class, since I'd have to also choose a textbook to cover the later fourteenth century. That defeciency has been corrected. The new edition adds selections from Langland, Chaucer, and the Gawain-poet. There are a few losses, "King Alisauder" being the most grievous, but nothing really fatal.

Overall, the changes made for this new edition make it a more useful and usable anthology. The introductory material and the footnotes are helpful.

One criticism I have is that only the first and last fitts of "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" are provided; I would prefer to see all of that poem. To me, that's pretty serious, and I'll have to find an additional text of GGK: the middle fitts, particularly Fitt 3, are vital to an understanding of the poem. Less serious are the omissions from the Chaucer section; perhaps alternate Canterbury Tales, or even "The Parliament of Fowls" or "The Book of the Duchess" could flesh this section out in a future edition.
