A desperate, postmortem defense of a failed policy.......2005-12-12
What's remarkable is how much gall and bravado it takes to defend a failed economic perspective AFTER it's been tested and proven wrong. Bartley, of course, was one of the chief proponents of "supply-side" economics, an extreme right-wing attitude toward economic policy that had little to do with solid economics, or indeed economic theory at all, so much as an attitude toward government and capitalism.
Even Milton Freidman, who had many valid initial points about the constraints on growth resulting from excessive taxes and over-regulation, or the delayed effects of federal monetary policy, never went this far... and non-economists like Bartley and Laffer were pretty much alone in their claims about the "magic of the marketplace" generating increased revenues by lowering taxes.
The sad thing is that, even though serious economists never bought into or supported the "supply side" concept, it didn't really matter to cranks like Bartley: their purpose was superficial populism and public-opinion essays to drum up right-wing support. And, of course, that resulted in the great Reagan-era "experiment"--which was (let's not forget) an unqualified failure by any measure.
Bartley would like to pretend otherwise--understandably, since he was largely responsible for this era of economic catastrophe. But to claim with a straight face that the supply-side policies of the 80s resulted in faster growth is simply ludicrous. Supply-side tax cuts generated a hideous and unprecedented peacetime deficit, a loss of federal revenues, a widened gap between rich and poor, and _slower_ growth. These are indisputable facts. If anyone had suggested this experiment with a full awarenss of the inevitable consequences for our society, they would be condemned as inhumane sociopaths.
But like any crackpot, Bartley isn't impressed with mere facts. You can always tell a far-right crackpot by their willingness to ignore not only the knowledge of those who've actually made their careers studying the field (i.e., "that darn ol' academia"), but also the real-world results of their tested and failed policies.
Supply-side was a disastrously bad idea with no intellectual foundation (not even among monetarists of the Friedman/Chicago school). It proved to be a complete failure. That alone should be enough to ensure that no one ever listens to Bartley again, let alone takes seriously the idea that these policies should be tried again.
But like the Evil Dead, the old supply-side notions of "tax cuts for growth" have never died in the minds of the frenetic faithful at the Wall Street Journal. So we're still dealing with this idiocy today, long after a trial run should have discredited this foolishness once and for all.
The Label "Trickle-Down Economics" is Liberal Idiocy.......2004-09-25
Robert Bartley wrote the most important and well-written economic history of the 1980s. It will stand as a rock of common sense and reason, while the shabby brickbats of Reagan's detractors will fade away.
The technical aspects of economics is very challenging to understand. That's what so great about it. Most of detractors of Reagan's economic policies were shrill. Bartley manages to make all the arguments between economists intelligible.
You learn how economic theory affected everyday life in the 1970s, 1980s, and very early 1990s.
Of paramount importance is the theme that runs through Bartley's robust analysis - THE fight of the 20th century: capitalism vs. socialism. Capitalism won and Reagan was its leading public spokesman AT A POINT WHEN HE WAS DESPERATELY NEEDED.
You will learn just how much in deep trouble the American dollar was, and how Americans pulled together to rise out of the Jimmy Carter malaise.
To try to understand all the fuss and debate over economics in politics and electioneering without the Seven Fat Years would be a mistake.
Reagan's economic policies and the people who helped shape it are a fundamental factor in making the USA a winner of the cold war and a superpower.
The True Story on How Economics Works.......2004-06-18
Robert Bartley, former editor of the Wall Street Journal (may he rest in peace), has written one of the best accounts of the 1980s economic policies, explaining what led to the economic growth, and what can be done to re-create these policies once again.
Many people who claim to oppose supply-side economics never explain how the theory works. The notion that Reagan's tax cuts were mere "trickle down" economics is buttressed by the fact that no one claims that the money will "trickle down." That is not how the economic philosophy works in theory or in practice. Instead, the theory considers high taxes to be another example in which a high cost placed on a product or service is likely to result in fewer interested buyers. Similarly, high marginal tax rates are more likely to stiffle growth since the reward for working additional hours is diminished. Those with small businesses, or those who invest, may decide that the extra work will not translate into higher returns, and thus may produce less. That is not good for the economy because this stiffles economic growth, and is a recipe for stagnation, which is exactly what happened in the 1970s. So reduce taxes to create more growth. The marginal rate fell from 70% to 28% during Reagan's tenure.
The other part of Reagan's program was to have a tigheter monetary policy. By tightening the dollar, it would reduce inflation. Thus, tighten the dollar, reduce inflation, and reduce taxes, and create growth. That is exactly what happened. During Reagan's tenure, inflation went down and growth went up. THIS IS AN INDISPUTABLE FACT.
The left does not like this theory because it contradicts the notion that government has an effect in creating economic growth.
But no matter what the liberals want to think, the young economist who went to Eureka College -- Ronald Reagan -- outsmarted all of them. His plan worked, while Jimmy Carter, the man who thought he knew everything, was an abyssmal failure.
Michael Gordon
Pure bunk.......2003-12-11
The problem with most contemporary books about economics (or
politics or the stock market) is that it becomes obvious a few
years later that the causes and effects perceived at the time
are not borne out by subsequent events. This book definitely
suffers from this malady. In short, it's an amusing one-sided
supply sider fantasy. Gee whiz, how come the economy boomed under
Clinton with all his gigantic tax increases? Basically supply
side economics is just another smokescreen offered by the haves
to the have-nots. Supply siders are the same people who believe
in Amway and chain letters as a means of getting rich.
early supply side fantasy& long term debacle=Reagan yrs.......2003-10-31
Robert L. Bartley must have been living on a different planet(during the 1980's) with this book. OR he is really just trying, sincerely, to sell a book with complete (deceptions). We hope(for our mental sake that he was living on a different planet) and NOT being a hypocrite in (relaying) inaccurate data/events by trying to pull the wool over our economic eyebrows with this book of hyper lies or exaggerations.
The Reagan first term in office started with lies!. His early 1981 Tax breaks, were masked by tax increases(state and local taxes rose). He also claimed that he would be responsive and
responsible for sound fiscal budgetary accounting. His entire term in office was scarred by ballooning federal budget deficits.
Because of his overwhelming budget cuts(he sold the American people in early 1980 on STARVING late 1970's hyper inflation by cutting the budget and Federal Reserve monetary supply so severly, too severly) and because of the real tax breaks (and) tax increases in the early 1980's and because of left over inflationary pressures from the Carter and Nixon years, therefore THE FIRST half of the first term of Reagan's years were marked by an early (1980's technical recession, just look at the GDP figures for that period). And every so called heavy weight media and non media conservative in this country allowed this lie of 7 fat positive growth years to continue.
The battle cry at the end of Reagan's first term in office fiscally proves my point here. With Reagan's NOW famous "stay the course". He and his campaign fake strategists were ACTUALLY begging us good American's to stay the economic course for his second term. And why?. Because his supply side economic policies of his first term WERE NOT WORKING for positive economic growth. Yes we were in a Contraction or recession during (NEARLY) the entire first half of this so called "7 Fat Years". It was NOT until the mid 80's that economic growth took hold and continued to late 1989(and this was false growth based on government debt/spending and consumer debt/fake borrowing). You are a real jokester, Mr. Robert L. Bartley author of this book. You should have titled this book "4 or 5 Fat Years Based on False Growth or Debt".
Also to throw voodoo economics on top of BAD economics, we as a Nation were treated to the S AND L mess. Co-authored in part by then Vice President George Bush Sr's son in Colorado. That cost us big(in the financial pocket books Mr.and Mrs. America). We are still paying for this calamity in the form of left over 80's now new millenium insurance premiums and fees from our wonderful consumer based banks.
And to top this whole terror Reagan economics off, coupled with too lazy "deregulations" we fell back into a technical recession at the end of his term(1989). NOT because of Bush Sr's lack of his own creative supply side economics. But because of the TOTALLY faulty beginning pen-menship of Reagan economics to begin with(all debt and false/fake economics all the time).
The ONLY really UNIQUE portrait of Reagan economics is: Reagan is one of the few, IF not only American President ever to be partially responsible for creating a technical recession(1981-1983)and fully responsible for 1989-1992 technical recession. How about that as a factorial for you history making maniacs?.

Book Description
This book chronicles how successive generations of natural philosophers, geologists and geomorphologists have come to invent different views of the Earth over the past 250 years.Today we take for granted certain given truths about the Earth: our planet is unimaginably old; the surface of the planet is in perpetual motion through the action of plate tectonics; and the structures on the surface of the Earth are being continuously modified by agencies such as wind, rain, rivers and glaciers. However, even 100 years ago, some of this received wisdom was not available.Using as its central viewpoint changing ideas about the significance of the action of rain and rivers on the Earth 's surface, Inventing the Earth shows how our contemporary "truths " have come to be accepted and, with no guarantee that our current view of the Earth is correct, exposes the frailty of even the most impeccably scientific visions of the Earth.Inventing the Earth is essential reading for undergraduates and postgraduates in physical geography, earth science and environmental studies.

Book Description
Providing the first comprehensive treatment, this book covers all aspects of the laser Doppler and phase Doppler measurement techniques, including light scattering from small particles, fundamental optics, system design, signal and data processing, tracer particle generation, and applications in single and two-phase flows. The book is intended as both a reference book for more experienced users as well as an instructional book for students. It provides ample material as a basis for a lecture course on the subject and represents one of the most comprehensive treatments of the phase Doppler technique to date. The book will serve as a valuable reference book in any fluid mechanics laboratory where the laser Doppler or phase Doppler techniques are used. This work reflects the authors' long practical experience in the development of the techniques and equipment, as the many examples confirm.

First published in 1952, Invisible Man revealed the pain of a black man's existence in a white world. It was shocking then, but remains important literature today. It is the story of a young man's journey--through the Deep South to the streets of Harlem, through events and experiences that range from tortured to macabre. As he moves through time, he learns about the black world, the white world, and a world of his own. His passage is a frightening but at the same time enlightening pilgrimage, for the Invisible Man and for all of us.
Book Description
Invisible Man is a milestone in American literature, a book that has continued to engage readers since its appearance in 1952. A first novel by an unknown writer, it remained on the bestseller list for sixteen weeks, won the National Book Award for fiction, and established Ralph Ellison as one of the key writers of the century. The nameless narrator of the novel describes growing up in a black community in the South, attending a Negro college from which he is expelled, moving to New York and becoming the chief spokesman of the Harlem branch of "the Brotherhood", and retreating amid violence and confusion to the basement lair of the Invisible Man he imagines himself to be. The book is a passionate and witty tour de force of style, strongly influenced by T.S. Eliot's
The Waste Land, Joyce, and Dostoevsky.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome book .......2007-09-05
The book came in new condition and I would buy a lot more books from this company in the future.
lightining.......2007-07-20
I've only read a couple of novels in my life where I could feel the author's intensity, like he was on fire with the muse when he wrote it. One was a portion of The Idiot by Dostoevsky, the other was this novel.
It can't be sustained. The novel falls off after the first half, but how can you sustain perfection?
Over-hyped.......2007-07-06
Long-winded and boring. Those who admire style over substance may enjoy this novel. Ellison reminds me a little of Joyce, i.e., the writing, prose and style are inventive and, at times, beautiful. However, unlike Joyce, the story goes nowhere and any revelations seem naive. Even for the time, he realizes his characters as overly-broad charicatures. In the end, the novel's premise is fundamentally flawed as Ellison seems unable to separate racism from hatred of the poor and institutional (religious, corporate, governmental, etc.) oppression.
A powerful novel, too often overlooked.......2007-06-26
With the release of Arnold Rampersad recent much praised biography of Invisible Man's author, Ralph Ellison, the time has truly arrived for readers to look again at this extraordinary novel. Too long pigeonholed as "African American literature" Invisible Man doubtless stands as a contender for the greatest American novel of the 20th century. Ellison draws on a wide range of sources to construct this opus, African American folk lore, 19th Century American literature, the bible, and Shakespeare, all tools brought into service as build this intricate tale of his narrator and protagonist, the never named "Invisible Man." From the treacherous terrain of the deep south, to the hopes and disappointments of Harlem, and to the Byzantine world of the American Communist Party, Ellison brings his readers along on a well guided tore of the landscape of the African American experience pre-WWII.
Yet as I said at the beginning, Invisible Man is a novel that speaks to the very heart of the American experience with its complex pull between expectations and class, the belief in limitless potential based on meritocracy and the minefield that destroys that very dream. Through it all, Ellison tells his tale with wit and deft humor, all of which contribute to the edifice that is this awesome work of fiction.
Dramatic Expose; Still Relevant Today.......2007-05-26
The quintessential novel serving as a precursor to the civil rights movement, "Invisible Man" explores the trials and tribulations of a gifted black man in the Depression era South and Harlem. Although racial strife and inequality is the central focus to Ellison's work, larger questions of individuality and conformity in an imperfect world abound. Even though the systemic racism and Jim Crow violence of this era has been relegated to the back burner of history, "Invisible Man" is still a potent story today, regardless of one's race or position in life.
"Invisible Man" serves as an apparatus for Ellision to espouse his own beliefs on the role of Blacks in America. Although Ellison rejects a philosophy of conformance to white society and the pursuit of economic success to trump racial inequality, he also vehemently rejects the black supremacy ideology, personified by Ras the Exhorter. Yet, the most damning condemnation is reserved for the organizations who manipulate and cajole blacks for their own agenda, as personified by the Brotherhood. Initially, the narrator (the unnamed "invisible" man) is offered a job as spokesman, who will spout their socialist propaganda at massive rallies in an attempt to organize Blacks into a vital force for socialist change. However, it soon becomes evident that the White power structure of the Brotherhood is using him as a means to dupe others. Indeed, the Brotherhood ultimately decides to "sacrifice" their Harlem contingency, a nice way of saying they they will let Blacks wallow in their own cesspool of racism and horrid living conditions.
Throughout the novel blindness plays an important role. In his attempt to advance himself, the narrator is blind to the true ambitions of the Brotherhood. Ras the Exhorter, the fiery demagogue, is blind to the race riot and violence he helps to incite. The white oppressors are blind to the black individual and his ability to succeed. Indeed, it seems as if no one is immune to the blindness of stereotypes, be they black or white.
On a higher level, "Invisible Man" explores the meaning of individuality and an attempt to define one's self. Throughout the novel, the narrator lets others define who he is. Only when he realizes that he's been living a pipe dream does he wake up and cast off the illusions of equality and manages to understand himself. However, this relates to anyone who as ever struggled to define themselves.
Overall, Ellison provides a multi-dimensional and thought-provoking novel. Although it was written sixty years ago and most of the systemic racism is gone, it is still relevant today. Indeed, it may be even more relevant as we attempt to break from the conformance of society and find our true selves.

Book Description
Critically acclaimed author John Smolens conjures a world of hidden truths and intrigue in which the familiar is the most mysterious force of all.
For years Samuel Xavier Adams’s father has been a shadow figure in his family’s lives, vanishing and reappearing, keeping a slender connection from afar while his wife and children are haunted by loneliness, his daughter wasted by addictions, and his son, Sam, hounded by his father’s enemies. Sam has spent his life trying to discover what his father, who “worked for the government,” was doing that was worth the family’s ruin. Sam’s insistence on answers and his suspicions of his father’s involvement in the events of November 1963 drew the wrong kind of attention from powerful quarters, scuttling his journalistic career. But at least, Sam believed, he had put his dealings with his father to rest.
Now the older man has resurfaced, has been seen slipping in and out of his wife’s hospital room moments before her death. Her autopsy report is suspicious and her ashes are missing. And Sam is again on his father’s trail, in a high-stakes game of hide-and-seek played out in the dark underworld of Boston’s hushed and foggy roads and waterways. There are other players in the game—many of them figures from the past whose allegiances and motives are tangled and obscure. All are racing toward a deadly reckoning, and for Sam it may be the last chance to solve the puzzle of his life by seeing his father clearly for the first time, before he inevitably vanishes again.

Review of Invisible World A Novel by John Smolens.......2003-05-03
Samuel Xavier Adams, the first-person narrator of The Invisible World, A Novel, by John Smolens, is convinced that his own father shot President Kennedy from the grassy knoll and writes a book with his conclusions, proving means, motive, and opportunity. A cover-up campaign raises doubts about his points, and his book soon is considered just another Kennedy assassination conspiracy theory. The novel opens years later with the death of Sam's mother. She is dying in the hospital; he is visiting with her, and she is lucid; he goes to the cafeteria; twenty minutes later he returns to find her slack-jawed stupefied, all memory and awareness wiped out; and she dies thus. Petra Mousakis, a reporter who has been having talks with Sam's mother because she believes Sam's conspiracy theory, says she saw a man enter his mother's hospital room and thinks it was his father. The novel tells the story of Sam's search for his father, to learn if and why he slipped a drug to his wife, Sam's mother, to wipe out her memory.
It's an enjoyable and fascinating read. Sam's colleague Petra is by turns colleague, lover, and soul mate, in a relationship with many twists and turns, and functions novelisticly as Sam's sounding board confidant. As regards his past years, so does his heroin addicted sister Abigail. In the hunt for his father, Sam encounters a sleazy politician, a Cuban freedom fighter turned drug dealer, and other characters with a stake in his quest. It's a dangerous quest, with murders, till at the climax father and son confront each other.
This novel will resonate with anyone who grew up without a father - whether he was not present because dead, because away, because of alcoholism, because of workaholism, or whatever. In Sam's case, his and Abigail's father was a government agent for an unnamed intelligence agency and was away from home for years at a time on secret assignments. Sam's resentment simmers under his need to find and confront his father.
This novel is also a paean to the city of Boston and nearby Salem and to sailing, with much loving detail about Boston / Salem landmarks and history and about sailing minutiae.
I was gripped by the plot, I cared about the characters, and I enjoyed the writing. So I highly recommend this novel.

Very Good Boston Thriller.......2003-03-29
Sons usually want to follow in their fathers footsteps. Oh, they can throw an adolescent rant, rebel for a few years, but they usually fall back into the comfortable groove of their fathers legacy. This relationship dynamic between father and son is explored in this exhilarating story written by John Smolens. Smolen's protagonist is Sam Adams, a disgraced Boston reporter and author who could not have a stranger relationship with his father. You see, Adams cannot follow in his fathers footsteps, because his father is the classic shadow man. Only telling his family that he "worked for the government", Adams Sr. was not doubt involved in the shadowy world of the CIA/FBI/Mafia alliance of the 60's and 70's. What he did, whom he killed, all classified. Sam does not know much, but he suspects one thing, that his father was in Dallas, on November 22, 1963.
The father and son connection is renewed when Sam's mother dies, under mysterious circumstances. Sam immediately suspects his father, who must have been covering up his last group of secrets. He immediately begins tracking his father again, a very dangerous thing to do. Soon, other shadow men emerge, thugs, soldiers, spooks. And they have a lot of guns and are not afraid to use them. While the story moves forward, Sam does a mental retrospective as he recalls his childhood, one full of long fatherly absences and sudden location changes. As he grows up, his father becomes more and more distant, never more so than on that day in Dallas. The story of Abigail, Sam's tragic sister is also told, highlighting the damaging effect that Adams Sr. has on the family. Meanwhile, the mysterious forces get closer and closer, just as Sam gets closer to the truth.
This book has some problems, namely some clichés and confusing character turns. However, this is overshadowed by Smolens interesting writing style. It reminds me of a street smart Ed McBain mixed with a somber Alan Furst. Boston and the rest of scenic New England is portrayed in a kind of smoky elegance, with plenty of Bruins hockey and pub scenes. New England kind of lends itself to this kind of conspiracy writing, especially concerning JFK's murder. The reader is treated to a good group of characters, and some customary Boston politicians. So, Boston and murder seem to go well together, and Smolens writes it very well.
The Invisible Word.......2003-03-17
This is a well-written story that captures the known and unknown world that surrounds a basically down and out writer, who is still coping with the secret CIA life of his father. The death of the writer's mother, presents a clash between the two worlds, the one of his sun and the shadow life of his father. Beware once you start reading, this book with be hard to put down.
fast paced book, throughally entertaining.......2003-01-13
