In a dry fashion, Packard tells the true story of the mighty Hewlett-Packard Company: Two college buddies begin a partnership by producing an audio oscillator in a Palo Alto garage in 1938 and wind up 60 years later with a $25-billion-dollar electronics company on their hands. He wraps the book up tidily with a timeline of the company's development milestones. Packard chalks up success to many things, including government contracts during wartime, but mostly to the company's management outlook ("The HP Way"), which champions openness, honesty, and flexibility throughout the organization. Entrepreneurs and technologists alike will be interested in this journey of an American giant. Packard's tone sometimes veers toward the self-congratulatory, but in this case, it somehow seems justified.
Book Description
Much more personal than standard corporate histories, David Packard's The HP Way provides insights into managing and motivating people and inspiration for would–be entrepreneurs. This bestselling classic joins the Collins Business Essentials line–up with a new Note from Steve Jobs.
From a one–car–garage company to a multibillion–dollar industry, the rise of Hewlett–Packard is an extraordinary tale of vision, innovation and hard work. Conceived in 1939, Hewlett–Packard earned success not only as a result of its engineering know–how and cutting–edge product ideas, but also because of the unique management style it developed – a way of doing things called 'the HP way'.
Decades before today's creative management trends, Hewlett–Packard invented such strategies as 'walk–around management', 'flextime', and 'quality cycles'. Always sensitive to the needs of its customers and responsive to employee input, Hewlett–Packard earned massive steady growth that far outshone its competitors' vacillating fortunes, even with radically different products from those responsible for its initial boom.
For entrepreneurs and managers alike, the wisdom found in these pages is invaluable if they want their businesses to gain steady growth and consistent success.

A must read classic because of the importance of HP to world business.......2007-10-09
This is a wonderful business classic that should be read and studied by everyone interested in business. David Packard and Bill Hewlett created one of the great American companies and that alone is worth knowing. That it is one of the great foundations of Silicon Valley is another reason that you need to know this story. However, as far as I am concerned, the most important reason to know this story is the set of principles these two men used in founding, building, and running their company.
While they were technically brilliant men, they were also geniuses in gathering and grooming talent. However, their ability to inspire amazing loyalty in their employees is something that seems all but lost in our modern age of disposable firms and transient employment. They pioneered open plan offices (few walls and no doors), management by walking around, and much more. They had profit sharing from the very beginning. Not only did they have annual company picnics, they also bought a camp for use by employees. I know there are many reasons for the transition to where we are now, but I still have to ask if we really are better off today than we were then. Well, are we?
The stories about the development of various products are all interesting, but the stories are all in the service of illustrating the principles he is trying to get across. His emphasis on conservative financing is well aware of the use many companies make of leverage. The rejection of Wall Street's focus on the present quarter is heartfelt, and primacy of sound business principles and corporate culture resonate strongly in our time and its emphasis on simply winning in any way possible. The pictures also add to the story.
The recent book, "Bill & Dave" provides background material and fills in some of the gaps you will notice in reading this book, and I recommend it, as well. Still, this is the original and written by the man himself (well, by his staff with his supervision, right?) and deserves our attention.
A must read. Really.

A decent book but could have told more about the company.......2006-12-21
Hewlett Packard is a now disgraced company that has severe problems to face in the future but this book will take you back to the HP of old. It tells how a printer company was developed to fill a need and the way in which they did business. I am normally not a fan of these books (The .... Way) but this one did a good job. It is short and to the point filling in the gap of an interesting company. It is worth a quick glance over if you are interested in the tech industry to see how a company should be run.
Nice guys sometimes win...........2006-10-17
Bill Hewlett & Dave Packard were two nice guys who worked hard, played fair, and won. An interesting tale with some good homespun advice.
What Happened?.......2006-10-05
I've read through this book 5 times and I don't recall the part where Mr Packard says to spy on the board of directors!
Hewlett Packard's Rise to the Top.......2006-05-26
Hewlett- Packard is a giant in the PC industry and one of the best- known names in high tech. Most every business in America owns at least one product from this company. From its humble beginnings in a Palo Alto garage, HP has grown into a massive electronics machine, racking up more than $45 billion in revenue for the 2001 year.
As far as the company itself goes, Hewlett- Packard is definitely a success story and it's a respectable company from most every standpoint. William Hewlett and Dave Packard deserve credit for running an ethical organization that pays attention to its surroundings and strives to treat others fairly. However, this book, "The HP Way", is somewhat lacking in its coverage of the company and as a source of business inspiration. Dave Packard wrote the book by himself, with a little help from two friends who provided some editing assistance. Packard might be outstanding as a businessman, but he is not a professional writer. And his choice of two amateur editors doesn't help matters. He really should have hired a professional to help him compose this book.
Packard gets a little sidetracked at times, too. The book starts out as a timeline, recounting important events and achievements from the past. Then, it strays from that course and starts talking about business planning and the ingredients for success. There's nothing wrong with this approach to writing a book, but Packard doesn't write in a smooth, continuous way. Instead, he reminisces about his times with Hewlett- Packard as though he is trying to cram as many tidbits of facts into one short book as he possibly can. Instead of providing the reader with stories about business struggles, personality conflicts, and resolutions, the book jumps around and includes snippets from events in the past. Because of this, there is no suspense at all in this book. It's basically just a summary of facts.
Hewlett- Packard is a very large U.S. corporation, with a strong presence in both domestic and foreign markets. This book is just over 200 pages in length. In my opinion, this is far too little space to adequately cover an industry behemoth like Hewlett- Packard. The large- size print makes the book a quick read, but it also contributes to its inadequate coverage of the company.
Dave Packard, and his partner William Hewlett, are legendary in the high tech business world. They built a huge corporate empire, starting with a simple electronic device assembled in a garage. The HP Way attempts to present the story of Hewlett- Packard and its rise to the top, but it fails to keep the interest of the reader, due to its unfocused style and lack of continuity. A corporation like Hewlett- Packard deserves better.

Book Description
This book is a practical guide to an investment-oriented approach to the valuation of knowledge management (KM) strategies and projects. It is not a how-to book on the accounting, appraisal-oriented, or intellectual capital approaches to the valuation of intangible assets. Instead, it focuses on how best to leverage knowledge assets to create real economic value. Most managers are interested in results. This book shows how to demonstrate those results by driving knowledge assets more directly and visibly into the financial statements of the organization.
The purpose of the book is to provide a rigorous financial framework for analyzing the value that can be created and protected by investing in the knowledge assets of an organization. The valuation methodology presented in this book provides the tools you need to get the most from your firm's investment in knowledge management. Specifically, we will combine selected tools from value-based management and financial economics with proven and unique models from knowledge management to create a method for valuing knowledge strategies, KM programs, and specific KM projects.
The book is written in four parts. Part I focuses on essential background material in knowledge management, finance, economics, and organizational theory. Part II uses the background material to develop a formal treatment of knowledge management and the KM valuation methodology. In Part III, the KM methodology is applied to over a dozen real-world valuation challenges in knowledge products, intellectual property, and knowledge work. Even though we use our own firm as an extended case study, care is taken to show how the examples we give (e.g., knowledge products and services, corporate libraries, communities of practices, enterprise-wide knowledge sharing systems, and patents) can be generalized and applied to other types of businesses. Part IV focuses on active research challenges in knowledge management and KM valuation.

Finally, a Very Practical Guide.......2000-08-23
"Knowledge Management", "Intellectual Capital", "Organizational Learning" and similar concepts all aim to help managers create more competitive success and shareholder value through better use of their firm's intangible assets (e.g., individual and collective knowledge, be it explicit or tacit). In spite of the intuitive appeal of these ideas, in too many organizations managers have a hard time applying them practically and measuring their results. This book directly addresses these issues in a manner that is both accessible and practical. To be sure, many more articles and books will be written on this subject; this one, however, should stand the test of time because of its usefulness to managers who actually have to implement these ideas and live with their results.

Book Description
In this fascinating book a distinguished legal authority and former prosecutor examines the flaws, contradictions, and weaknesses in the American justice system. The gripping stories he tells about the investigation and trial of criminal cases - from evidence gathering to jury selection to plea bargaining - reveal what`s really going on and demonstrate how the system often delivers virtual-rather than actual-justice.
Customer Reviews:
Awful.......2007-05-29
This book is just plain bad. I almost didn't review it because it seems to have gone largely unnoticed. In the end, however, I felt I owed Amazon customers a duty to warn them.
There's just nothing interesting in this book at all. There are a bunch of complaints about our justice system ranging from jury nullification to peremptory challenges. The author gripes and then proposes a solution. The solutions seem to be either too radical to ever gain support or too bland to even care about. What they all lack is any kind of original thought or logical support. Almost all support is anecdotal... and they're not even real anecdotes, they're fictional (although to be fair they are believable).
One good thing: Each chapter can be read individually. So if you're really interested in this book you can go to the library and read one chapter. If you liked that short story, there are 13 more. Or, if you start to read the book you can drop it at any time without losing any closure as each chapter wraps up that topic.

Introduction to Superconductivity: Second Edition (Dover Books on Physics)

Book Description
This book presents in a pedagogical yet complete way correlated systems in one dimension. Recent progress in nanotechnology and material research have made one dimensional systems a crucial part of today's physics. After an introduction to the basic concepts of correlated systems, the book gives a step by step description of the techniques needed to treat one dimension, and discusses the resulting physics. Then specific experimental realizations of one dimensional systems such as spin chains, quantum wires, nanotubes, organic superconductors etc. are examined. Given its progressive and pedagogical approach, this book should satisfy both graduate students who want to learn the tools of the trade and become professionals in the field as well as more advanced researchers who want to know more about the physics of a specific one dimensional system without unnecessary technicalities.

Book Description
The main theme of the book is focused on the intimate connection between two families of exactly solvable models: the inverse-square (ISE) and the nearest-neighbor exchange (NNE) models. The NNE models are Bethe-Ansatz solvable and include the Heisenberg spin chain, t-J models and Hubbard models. The ISE Calogero-Sutherland family of models are simple to solve and contain essentially the same physics as the NNE family. The author introduces and discusses current topics, such as the Luttinger liquid concept, fractional statistics, and spin-charge separation, in the context of the explicit models.

Lie Groups, Lie Algebras, and Some of Their Applications
ASIN: 0801880157 |
Book Description
One of the key components of modern physics, quantum mechanics is used in such fields as chemistry, electrical engineering, and computer science. Central to quantum mechanics is Schrödinger's Equation, which explains the behavior of atomic particles and the energy levels of a quantum system. Robert Gilmore's innovative approach to Schrödinger's Equation offers new insight into quantum mechanics at an elementary level.
Gilmore presents compact transfer matrix methods for solving quantum problems that can easily be implemented on a personal computer. He shows how to use these methods on a large variety of potentials, both simple and periodic. He shows how to compute bound states, scattering states, and energy bands and describes the relation between bound and scattering states. Chapters on alloys, superlattices, quantum engineering, and solar cells indicate the practical application of the methods discussed.
Gilmore's concise and elegant treatment will be of interest to students and professors of introductory and intermediate quantum courses, as well as professionals working in electrical engineering and applied mathematics.

Customer Reviews:
Five stars are not enough.......2005-07-04
This is the first book I ever read by Poppy Z. Brite, and ever since I have been enchanted by her works. I think her novels are better than short stories, as there is more room for detail and development, but that is not to say that her short stories are lacking in richness. This is a good work to start with, if you are new to Poppy Z. Brite's work, because it gives you a glimpse into the world of her writing. Each story makes you crave more of her witty, erotic, dark prose. A must-have for any fan of Gothic horror.
Still In Print Under Another Title.......2000-03-12
First I would like to mention that this book is still in print, but under a different tittle. It is called "Wormwood."
This is an excellent book of short stories by the amazing Ms. Brite. THese short pieces do a great job in showing how Poppy thinks and writes, and give you a good grasp of her style. They do not hold up to the very high standards of her novels though. If you are to read her short stories and dislike them, don't give up and discredit her until you've read a novel of hers (I suggest starting with Lost Souls.)
Ms. Brite's True Form.......1999-10-19
This book is more than text and paper; it is an invitation into a world created by the Queen of modern Gothic literature. I have read all of Ms. Brite's works, and this first glimpse in original form is perhaps her best...A TRUE AND LITERAL MASTERPIECE! I kept it in bed for weeks.
THE BEST EVER from Poppy Z. Brite.......1999-10-08
This is truly THE MASTERPIECE from Ms. Brite. It took me a couple of years to track down a copy. It was DEFINITELY worth the time, trouble, and money! I would encourage true fans of gothic and horror to get a copy to read at any price!
dark beauty.......1999-08-08
Poppy Z Brite delivers a compelling decadent and darkly erotic brand of horror. Swamp foetus is a collection of shorts stories that brings out the best of her lush gothic imagination. If you need any thing to help sell this to you it may be worth knowing that Steve and Ghost return for a short trip round urban bizarre in New York. Dont be fooled into thinking that this its all there is worth while between the covers, oh no there is the festering, verdirgis seduction of a truly accomplished authoress hooking your soft flesh and draging you into a skewed world that repulses yet makes you want to be a part of it! So go on put the sisters of mercy on your hi-fi pour your self some red wine and slip into decadence and dark beauty
