    Book Description

After World War II a select number of countries outside Japan and the West--those that Alice Amsden calls "the rest"--gained market share in modern industries and altered global competition. By 2000, a great divide had developed within "the rest", the lines drawn according to prewar manufacturing experience and equality in income distribution. China, India, Korea and Taiwan had built their own national manufacturing enterprises that were investing heavily in RandD. Their developmental states had transformed themselves into champions of science and technology. By contrast, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico had experienced a wave of acquisitions and mergers that left even more of their leading enterprises controlled by multinational firms. The developmental states of Mexico and Turkey had become hand-tied by membership in NAFTA and the European Union. Which model of late industrialization will prevail, the "independent" or the "integrationist," is a question that challenges the twenty-first century.

      Book Description

The first edition of Porter/Norton was the most successful new entry into the financial accounting market in twenty years. This third edition holds true to the original vision of teaching the subject from both the preparer and user perspective, but with a revision focused on greater accessibility to the variety of students taught. Two annual reports (Gateway and Ben JerryÆs) and an annual update program with price stability guarantee highlight the third edition package.

5 out of 5 stars Get the new edition, not the 9th edition.......2002-09-18

I am the co-author of this book. the 10th edition is now out. If you are a student, you'll want that. If you're trying to learn on your own, you'll find this 9th edition adequate and much cheaper. good luck. roman

5 out of 5 stars Great for graduate study.......2002-08-22

Many people get this book wrong. This is a book for graduate students, not for undergraduates. It introduces the concepts of financial accounting in a condensed way, which does require more time and patient to understand it, like the way we study in MBA program. Since this book assumes its reader as future statement readers, it introduces finanical statements, including balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement,in the first few chapters to let student understand the linkage among them. It is usually very difficult to understand for those without background, though. Plus, given the fact that this book is required by most of top MBA programs, like Chicago, Columbia, and NYU, I'd like to say that accounting professors have told us the quality of this book. For those who have a hard time on this, I would also recommend its accompanied study guide and solution manuals (used one available on amazon website ISBN 0030269695& ASIN: 0030182697; make sure get the right edition!!). After all, this is a good book, but requires more practices. Good luck.

      4 out of 5 stars A Good Introductory Text.......2001-12-30

I'd never had any accounting courses before. This textbook was required for my financial accounting course in an MBA program. The book does a good job of logically explaining all the important topics. Unfortunately, it takes a Herculean effort to sit down and study the material due to the dry subject matter.

The authors did a good job of using examples from real firms, which, I think, makes it more interesting. I've decided to keep this book after the course for a reference.

1 out of 5 stars Accounting for dummies (ahem, I mean Lawyers).......2001-10-16

I am a 2nd year law student in the top 10% of my class at a first tier law school (meaning, I'm capable of reading and comprehending dense material). I took an accounting class thinking it would be helpful knowledge in the practice of law. My professor - fantastic. This text book - awful. The only reason I was able to (hopefully) get a good grade (the exam was last week) was that the professor was so good at explaining the concepts he felt were important. The book was confusing and overly verbose (coming from a wordsmith & soon to be lawyer, that statement should be given much weight!!) There were many exercises, but truth be told it was the professor's explanations that allowed me to do the exercises, NOT the book's.

1 out of 5 stars You're going to get confuse!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-06-15

Firstly,I really want to rate this book zero star or minus star.I've bought this book because I used it in my MBA course .This book made me hate Accounting too.I strongly agree with rewiewer " this book made me hate accounting" .After I've read this book for many times I found it very wordy I can summarise the concept in one line whereas the books try to explain too much (2-3 pages)and also irrelavant.Eventhough the authur uses a lot of explanations, but can not be understood.IT is very vital to you to keep your money for the movie, put in the bank ,or doing whatever except buying this book.Anyway this book has a lot of exercises( Not so extremely bad)

                            Book Description

This book discusses mathematical models that are based on the concepts of classical equilibrium thermodynamics. They are intended for the analysis of possible results of diverse natural and production processes. Unlike the traditional models, these allow one to view the achievable set of partial equilibria with regards to constraints on kinetics, energy and mass exchange and to determine states of the studied systems of interest for the researcher. Application of the suggested models in chemical technology, energy and ecology is illustrated in the examples.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the history of ideas about the sun and the stars, from antiquity to modern times. Two theoretical astrophysicists who have been active in the field since the early 1960s tell the story in fluent prose. About half of the book covers most of the theoretical research done from 1940 to the close of the twentieth century, a large body of work that has to date been little explored by historians.

The first chapter, which outlines the period from about 3000 B.C. to 1700 A.D., shows that at every stage in history human beings have had a particular understanding of the sun and stars, and that this has continually evolved over the centuries. Next the authors systematically address the immense mass of observations astronomy accumulated from the early seventeenth century to the early twentieth. The remaining four chapters examine the history of the field from the physicists perspective, the emphasis being on theoretical work from the mid-1840s to the late 1990s--from thermodynamics to quantum mechanics, from nuclear physics and magnetohydrodynamics to the remarkable advances through to the late 1960s, and finally, to more recent theoretical work. Intended mainly for students and teachers of astronomy, this book will also be a useful reference for practicing astronomers and scientifically curious general readers.

At its founding, Boston was a small peninsula; over the last 375 years the city has doubled in size by filling in the surrounding tidal flats--areas covered with water at high tide and exposed at low. In Walking Tours of Boston's Made Land, historian Nancy Seasholes outlines twelve walks that trace where and why Boston's man-made land was created, and, along the way, uncovers fascinating and little-known pieces of Boston history. In the course of these walks--around the central waterfront, Back Bay, Beacon Hill, the South End, Charlestown, and elsewhere--she shows us how Boston's past is always just below the surface of its present.

Each walk is accompanied by a map that shows the route and original shoreline. The walks are illustrated with historical maps, historical photographs and views, and current photographs. All walks are accessible by public transportation.

Anthony Farrant has always found his way, lying to get jobs and borrowing money to get by when he leaves them in a hurry. His twin sister Kate persuades him to move and sets him up with a job as a bodyguard to Krogh, her lover and boss, an all-powerful Swedish financier. But Farrant does have a sense of decency. When Krogh gives orders that offend him, he leaks information to Minty, a down-trodden journalist, with drastic results.

3 out of 5 stars Far from great, but worth it.......2006-04-05

'England Made Me' is a relatively early novel in the illustrious writing career of Graham Greene, who was considered repeatedly for the Nobel Prize in Literature but ended up on a list of rejected greats that includes Joyce, Proust, Lawrence, and Maugham. Written during the outbreak of industrial globalization and trends that scattered British citizens throughout the world in pursuit of a good salary, 'Made Me' must have struck a nerve with readers in 1935 and has something of a prophetic voice today.

Just over 200 pages, Greene's novel follows the lives of Anthony Farrant and his twin sister, Kate, who share a deep affection for one another but have drifted geographically apart. Anthony has connived through one job, one country, one apartment, and one girlfriend after another; Kate, meanwhile, has enjoyed 'success' as the personal secretary and mistress of Erik Krogh, an industrial magnate based in Stockholm. Ever willing to help, Kate talks her lover into hiring Anthony as his bodyguard and 'watches over' the erratic sibling.

While emphasizing the petty ways of Anthony, Greene draws a bleak industrial landscape between the First and Second World Wars, with human decency and feelings of self-worth quickly eroding. In Greene's universe, all three main characters are cold and lonesome. Kate is certainly the more successful Farrant, but she has climbed her way to the executive offices through lust and a fair share of ruthlessness. Krogh is comparable in ways to Howard Hughes, a man who has everything, yet is constantly shadowed by the threat of failure and clueless on how to interact with others.

'England Made Me' is not only a social document that portraits a loss of national identity and individualism, but also a bizarre love story involving Kate, Krogh, and Anthony. Throughout the novel, Kate is torn between her love for Krogh and her 'sisterly' love for Tony, which grows in desperation and often borders on the incestuous. The Farrants' relationship is certainly one of the most unorthodox in world literature and leads to a shattering climax.

Well-made secondary characters bring energy to the novel, especially Minty, a fellow down-and-out Englishman who is a member of the Stockholm press, and Lucia Davidge, a vacationing girl whom Anthony falls for. Greene effectively gives us a tour of the Swedish capital, leaving us at several landmarks where the action takes place. 'England Made Me' has Greene's familiar style of journalistic narration, simple yet wonderfully alive. A Catholic viewpoint is again used in his storytelling, although not with the enrobing quality of his later work.

'England Made Me' is not one of Greene's better novels, as a good portion of the writing is cliched and certain points in the storyline appear forced in order for things to move along. But the inferior Greene will beat the superior work of other writers nine times out of ten and should be enjoyable to fans of 20th century British authors.

                                3 out of 5 stars A real slog.......2006-04-03

Graham Greene is my favorite author, and I've read most of his novels, but for me, this was a real slog to get through. In fact, the only reason I finished reading it was to learn from his usual excellent use of similes and metaphors. To me the conflict was meager, the plot boring, and the characters not all that interesting. I kept waiting for a brilliant twist in the plot, or some thrill, but alas, I finished reading the book wishing I'd read something else instead.

4 out of 5 stars "There's only the price people are willing to pay.".......2003-04-19

In Graham Greene's novel, "England Made Me," twins Kate and Anthony Farrant are opposites, but they are bound by their past, devotion, and on Kate's side--a sense of guilt. Kate is both the secretary and the fiancee of Krogh, a wealthy European industrialist--a driven man who functions like a machine, devoid of emotion and devoted only to his megalomaniacal urges. When Anthony experiences yet another bout of bad luck (and his life is full of bad luck stories), Kate comes to his rescue--yet again--and offers Anthony a job in Sweden with Krogh.

Anthony, a Nihilist, vacillates between giving up all the small pleasures he gains from living in England against the possibilities that may be gained from steady employment from his rich soon-to-be brother-in-law. Finally it is Kate's dominant willpower that prevails. Anthony leaves for Sweden, and so begins a chain of events which pit Anthony--the useless--although ornamental product of a corrupt British public school system in the last throes of Empire, against the vast, solid, immovable and unstoppable power of Krogh's financial empire.

The best things about Greene novels are the relationships between the characters. Greene always manages to place characters in the wrong spot at the wrong time. And Greene characters who have spent a lifetime acting or avoiding certain situations, are forced to confront those issues in Greene's created worlds. In "England Made Me, " Anthony's relationship with his sister Kate is bordering on the incestuous. Kate realises that she possesses all the traits that are good if they exist in a male, but are somewhat socially inappropriate--and even unattractive in a female. If forged together, Anthony and Kate would form a healthy, whole human being, but separately, Anthony is "too human to live"--weak, feckless, and an effete. Kate seems slightly un-human. Her very desire to 'help' Anthony, only encourages his dependence.

Anthony forms a relationship with Minty--a shabby, middle-aged, British newspaper reporter , who refers to himself in the third person. Minty and Anthony have a great deal in common--both men are "black sheep," both men are friendless (although Anthony is far more affable and charming), and both men are abject failures. Anthony's optimism and lack of introspection prevent him from arriving at this conclusion, however, for Minty is what Anthony could become if he ever stuck with one thing long enough. Anthony remains the most interesting character in the book--he's at once complex and yet shallow--happy to blackmail Krogh for the corrupt outrages he feels Krogh shouldn't be allowed to get away with, and yet, he's too vague to actually try and stop the man.

This is not the best Graham Greene novel I've read. The point of view shifts back and forth from first person (a variety of narrators) to third person omniscient, and there were several stream of consciousness passages that were hard to follow. It took a while for me to really get into this book, but when I did, I was riveted. This book is rated against other Graham Greene novels--displacedhuman

                                4 out of 5 stars A Clash of Values.......2002-04-17

A short, yet interesting novel set largely in Stockholm. The Englishman Anthony Farrant, through the good offices of his twin sister Kate, gets a job with the Swedish businessman Krogh. What follows thereafter is a slow exposure of the different sets of values held by Krogh and the other characters (who are mainly British residents in Sweden).

I thought that "England Made Me" is a deeply anxious work: the British (with one notable exception) are, for all their faults, fundamentally humane but lack any willpower. Krogh however is inhumane, shallow and yet totally driven. I reflected that perhaps Greene was intending this to be an allegory: the mid-twentienth century British lack any self-confidence and fall back on a mythical idea of decency derived from their spurious public school traditions, whereas Krogh represents the stark face of (then) modern capitalism - utterly lacking in compassion, amoral and foreign.

                                An interesting period piece.

4 out of 5 stars The Truth is a Dangerous Thing.......1998-06-16

A novel about the black sheep of a British family, England Made Me is an indictment of the "solid morals" that English society held fast to in the early twentieth century, and an incisive look at what "doing the right thing" actually leads to.

Some gardeners have avoided roses assuming that they were too tricky, fussy, and difficult to grow. This book will help gardeners identify the roses that are easy to grow in their region of the country, and also give tips on how to care for and maintain them.

Through six regional editions, Jackson & Perkins Beautiful Roses Made Easy explains how breeding and testing provide modern-day roses that are much easier to grow, with better results.

Regional editions give readers specific information on growing conditions in their area and the best roses for those conditions.
