Perspectives on an Uncertain Future.......2001-06-04

This is one in a series of "Strategy & Business" books from Booz-Allen & Hamilton, published by Jossey-Bass. All are first-rate and well-worth checking out. In this book, Joel Kurtzman edits a series of in-depth interviews of 12 of the most influential thought leaders during the last decade. Obviously, some will quibble with the number and/or with specific selections. However, although several may be unfamiliar to you, after you read the interviews I think you will agree with me that all 12 are eminently worthy. They are: Charles Handy, Minoru Makihara, Keshub Mahindra, C.K. Prahalad, John Kao, Paul M. Romer, Stan Shih, Norbert Walter, John T. Chambers, Warren Bennis, Gary Hamel, and Jean-Rene Fourtou. In the Foreword, Brian N. Dickie (president and COO, Booz-Allen & Hamilton) suggests that "the new agenda" for CEOs and their top[ teams (managing for growth, business process redesign for the next generation, and new organization structures) and then suggests that "the winners will be those CEOs who can integrate the new agenda with their own clear vision while simplifying the execution challenge and inspiring their organizations to perform beyond expectations." It is from this perspective that Kurtzman then provides the 12 interviews. None of them fully addresses all of the issues but together, the CEOs provide insights of substantial value to decision-makers at all levels of organizational configuration. Kurtzman has exceptional skills as both interviewer and editor, framing initial questions and then adjusting smoothly during the rigorous but informal exchange of responses. He guides each "thought leader" without imposing any of his own opinions. The result is that the reader is provided with direct access to how each of the 12 thinks as well as what each has to share about a given issue. Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out the other volumes in the "Strategy & Business" series from Booz-Allen & Hamilton. I also highly recommend Strategy + Business magazine of which Kurtzman served as editor-in-chief.

Waste of 120 bucks.......2006-10-09

This is one of the worst-written programming books I have seen yet. I'm sorry I bought it. It appears to be written by a man who knows quite a bit about finance, and dangerously little about C++ programming. Duffy's review correctly describes the main flaws.

I would add that (1) The book is not structured to build upon OO, GOF Patterns, or STL design principles; (2) The code does not follow even basic C++ coding conventions; (3) The images (screenshots) are agonizingly UNREADABLE; (4) The code listings are in ITALICS using a variable-pitch font [is COURIER font code listing so difficult to include in a $100 book???]; (5) No over-arching component object model is suggested ANYWHERE in the book.

Some of the efforts at brevity are just plain WRONG or even DANGEROUSLY WRONG to teach beginning programmers. For example, Pg 19 Data Types section:

int - holds integer numbers up to a little over 2 million, for example, "int I = 2000000;."
long - same as int.
----------------

WRONG, PROFESSOR! This is not only a syntactically incorrect example, but a just plain wrong assertion. If the reader does not know how to determine the (platform-specific) size of an "int" or "long", then the author has only served to confuse the matter further!

Furthermore, I consider it a "cheapskate" tactic to ask readers to pay for the code from this book in electronic form (particularly when the book's code listings are so sloppy). That said, I would not use the code, even if it had been supplied for free ... but it *might* have been interesting to have something to play around with...

Have any of the reviewers actually USED any code from this book without substantial refactoring?

The only use I could see for this book is for intermediate-advanced fin-techs, who want to review a few general algorithms for selected derivative calculations (futures, forwards, etc) ... but just be prepared to squint and suffer through reading the code!

Book to learn how to program derivatives's modeling.......2004-08-05

This is very accessible book to learn from. If really want be a quanta this is the book to start with. All quantas entering the field of financial derivatives should start with this book, which includes all you will need to know to program and implement your first derivatives' modeling application.

This book has the contents that a graduate student will look for in a course that covers derivatives application development using C++. Dr. Brooks book is by far the best I have ever scanned for the purpose of finance. For a quant analyst position it is important to understand how to generate various mathematical tools using C++ and the book covers such code in details. The book covers Lattice based solutions through extensive coding of Black Derman and Toy, Monte Carlo simulation, curve fitting techniques and iterative numerical solutions technique .The most attractive part of this book is the simplistic approach to mathematical complexities and Dr. Brooks excels in handling the mathematics and the language. His examples are in Borland C++ so VC or other C users need not be intimidated as the basic C++ principles are the same for any type of proprietary C++ language. In fact Borland is a good way to get introduced to the visual C++ modeling approach at the graduate level, it definitely reduces the entry barrier into coding.

Code Available.......2003-05-17

If you have shopped around you may be aware that this is one of the only books available that is dedicated to pricing derivatives using C++. Perhaps like me as a student of Pure and Applied Mathematics you have wondered why all those Financial Engineering grad schools are pushing so hard for C++.
You can expect that this book will introduce you to a set of traditional algorithms for option pricing at a basic level. It will be helpful if you already know standard C++, and also if you have seen mathematical models of what is being implemented here.

This book examines the biological, especially the neural, substrates of affiliation and related social behaviors. Affiliation refers to social behaviors that bring individuals closer together. This includes such associations as attachment, parent-offspring interactions, pair-bonding, and the building of coalitions. Affiliations provide a social matrix within which other behaviors, including reproduction and aggression, may occur. While reproduction and aggression also reduce the distance between individuals, their expression is regulated in part by the positive social fabric of affiliative behavior.

Until recently, researchers have paid little attention to the regulatory physiology and neural processes that subserve affiliative behaviors. The integrative approach in this book reflects the constructive interactions between those who study behavior in the context of natural history and evolution and those who study the nervous system.

The book contains the partial proceedings of a conference of the same title held in Washington, DC, in 1996. The full proceedings was published as part of the Annals of the York Academy of Sciences.

Great for Teaching "Romeo and Juliet".......2007-04-22

This book has saved me more than once! I used it just the other day when teaching the famous balcony scene, "What's in a name....". Out textbook suggested having the students translating this particular passage into modern English, but gave no translation. So, I pulled out this book and it saved the day! I also suggested it to another teacher who was having the same problem. It would be nice if a school district would purchase these books for all of their students (with today's budgets, that won't happen). This book is well worth the money spent.

Deceptive Advertising.......2006-03-23

The Manual for Romeo and Juliet is not at all what it is advertised to be. It does NOT contain the original text of the play nor any "translation" of the play into modern English. It contains only brief summaries of the play's scenes and a modicum of analysis. If that is what you need, buy Cliff Notes for half the price.

The classic love story.......2004-05-12

"Romeo and Juliet" is a simple love story that is brought to life by the poetry and beauty of Shakespeare's writing style. This is the story of two lovers who are caught between their feuding families and are unable to publicly show their affections. In the end they both die for their feelings conveying the message that love is the strongest bond between two people. The sonnet-like stanzas seems to breath life into the characters and create an emotional connection between the reader and the story. Shakespeare captures the deep feelings of each character by simply using powerful dialouge that leaves the reader breathless. I would recommend this play to anyone at an advanced reading level, since the language can at times be hard to decipher. This story will grab the hearts of even the toughest person, and bring tears to the eyes of those people who adore a good love story.
