                1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-04-18

This was a promotional piece for Stora Enso paper. I'm a graphic artist so I have billions of these things laying around - I suppose the reps at shows I attended were more than happy to dump them as these little buggers are heavy. There are no words save the end credits and exactly four, one-sided pages with little quippy questions regarding annual reports.

On the art end - if you've fooled yourself into thinking there's more to post mod commercial art than there really is - you will find this book delightful. I can only wish for the day my artistic clout will land me a job as simple and quick to pull off as this one.

For those who appreciate a serious exertion by the artist and/or are seeking materials within the paper company promotional books arena, I would recommend looking for Potlatch Design Series - American Design Century.

                5 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2006-12-05

I've had this book for years and I still notice new images and details. In fact, every time I pick up this book I have a new experience with it. It's great as a flip book and its great to slowly go through and look at images. You can have a linear experience with it if that is what you want or you can just drop in anywhere which is what I tend to do. The small size of the pages combined with the formidable thickness of the book make a little unwieldy, which forces a kind of active involvement with it. I tend to like art that shows more than it tells and this book fits that description.

                1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money.......2005-01-12

I ordered this book thinking I was going to actually get some quality information concerning annual reports. Cahan & Associates are well-known for producing quality annual reports and I had assumed that this book would be a worthwhile read. Instead of being a read of any sort, it's a bit of visual fluff; a miniature format book filled with a lot of silly pictures and a word or two here and there.
544 pages of self-indulgence by Stora Enso paper company designed by Cahan & Associates. Just a sales tool for Stora Enso's coated paper stock.

                5 out of 5 stars Amazing-insightful.......2001-11-08

I found the book to be amazing from a design perspective and enjoy having it on my coffee table for all to see.

                          Book Description

Macrophytes and macrophytes ecology have gained an added importance with the introduction of, and legal requirement to implement, the European Water Framework Directive. This reflects the valuable role that aquatic plant communities play in assessing the ecological status of water bodies. Significant changes in the status and general abundance of these communities has been recorded in the last three decades, consequent on such factors as global warming and, increasingly, on the spread of aggressive alien species. These changes have been most felt in those waters that are exploited for amenity and recreational pursuits.

The increased biomass of aquatic vegetation in water bodies has adversely impacted on leisure use of these systems but has also impacted on their use for agricultural, flood relief, municipal and domestic purposes. The loss to national economies resulting from this excessive plant biomass has been appreciable and has put pressure on water managers to develop weed control procedures that are efficient, environmentally sensitive and cost-effective. The results from the most up-to-date research activities and field trials of leading aquatic plant scientists and managers in all five continents, aimed at resolving these weed problems, has been drawn together in this volume.

The title of this special issue, 'Macrophytes in aquatic ecosystems: from biology to management', is wide-ranging and reflects the broad scope and scale of the papers presented therein. It further recognises the old paradigm: 'knowledge to achieve management and management to achieve knowledge'.

                            Book Description

There is a growing need for appropriate management of aquatic plants in rivers and canals, lakes and reservoirs, and drainage channels and urban waterways. This management must be based on a sound knowledge of the ecology of freshwater plants, their distribution and the different forms of control available including chemical, physical, biological and biomanipulation. This series of papers from over 20 different countries was generated from the highly successful European Weed Research Society symposia on aquatic plant management, this being the ninth. The contributions provide a valuable insight into the complexities involved in managing aquatic systems, discuss state-of-the-art control techniques such as biomanipulation using fish and waterfowl and the use of straw, and deal with patterns of regrowth and recovery post-management. Careful consideration is given to the use of chemicals, a practice which has come under scrutiny in recent years.
Underpinning the development of such control techniques is a growing body of knowledge relating to the biology and ecology of water plants, including growth responses under different trophic conditions, the impact of pollution, and aspects of photosynthesis. The authorship of the papers represents the collective wisdom of leading scientists and experts from fisheries agencies, river authorities, nature conservation agencies, the agrochemical industry and both governmental and non-governmental organisations.

From Apocalypse to Way of Life is the most stirring, comprehensive account of the environmental crisis since Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. In vivid prose, Frederick Buell illustrates the growing complexity of our ecological catastrophe as well as the suffocating political and cultural forces that blunt our response to it.
In some quarters, the prophecies of doom have produced a Chicken Little syndrome: If the sky has not yet fallen, why should we believe it will? Buell counters with the hard facts about contemporary threats to human health--deforestation freshwater depletion, ocean pollution, biodiversity loss, synthetic hormones--while tracing the expressions of environmental apocalypse in popular culture.
With passion and eloquence, From Apocalypse to Way of Life shows us the crisis that is staring us in the face, and explains why we can no longer see it.

Well-written, intelligent, daunting. One of the best environmental books I've read in a few years, and I teach, write, edit, and review in this field.

I know of no better book about the environmental crises in the US today than this one. It is full of ideas and information but is also full of feeling and is a great read! The book also tells the often sad and outrageous story of environmental politics from the conservative "revolution" to the present and explores many of the very bizarre ways in which we Americans have attempted culturally to adapt to living with and in environmental crisis. I highly recommmend it.

From Apocalypse to Way of Life gives a riveting account of environmental crisis in all its many forms--as a catastrophe in progress in nature, as a threat to human health, and as a dysfunctional aspect of society. It deals with trashed ecosystems, chemical and other pollution, the extinction of species, the risks of new technologies, scary human health problems, and the environmental effects of global inequities. It gives an often amusing (sometimes hilarious) and sobering account of the various attempts to convince us that environmental crisis does not exist (or more blatantly, that it is actually good for us) that have entered American politics and culture over the last three decades.

Buell's book on environmental crisis is that rare breed of serious book. It's really important, and it's also thoroughly readable and entertaining. Every major aspect of environmental crisis is discussed, and how the crisis has played out in American politics and culture is also fully presented. It's a must read for anyone who wants to really try to imagine the next hundred years.

                                          Book Description

This book is an introduction to integrability and conformal field theory in two dimensions using quantum groups. The book begins with a brief introduction to S-matrices, spin chains and vertex models as a prelude to the study of Yang-Baxter algebras and the Bethe ansatz. The authors then introduce the basic ideas of integrable systems, giving particular emphasis to vertex and face models. They give special attention to the underlying mathematical tools, including braid groups, knot invariants, and towers of algebras. The authors then go on to give a detailed introduction to quantum groups before addressing integrable models, two-dimensional conformal field theories, and superconformal field theories. The book contains many diagrams and exercises to illustrate key points in the text and will be appropriate for researchers and graduate students in theoretical physics and mathematics.
