Book Description
In February of 1996, Columbia University and New York University marked the centennial of the French labor movement by jointly sponsoring a conference to reflect on the history of this movement and on the future prospects for trade unionism in France. A Century of Organized Labor in France is a collection of papers presented at that conference, written by distinguished historians and social scientists from both France and the United States, as well as by important French trade union leaders. Offering an interdisciplinary approach that is rare among studies on this subject, this volume examines the trajectory of the French labor movement and provides rich lessons for students of contemporary France, Western European politics and society, and comparative labor movements.

The title of this book is just the kind of gag that made John Callahan famous: he can't stand up because he's paralyzed from the neck down. This "quasi memoir" is a collection of essays, gag panels, and comic strips that reveal the weird tragedies and amusing moments that come with being America's most offensive quadriplegic cartoonist. He includes cartoons that were deemed too tasteless to be printed in the alternative weekly papers that make most of their money from advertisements for strip clubs and phone-sex numbers that appear alongside the "anything goes" personal ads. There is also a collection of irate letters from readers who didn't "get" Callahan's jokes about disabled people, and letters of praise from disabled people who did understand his humor. Will the Real John Callahan Please Stand Up? is a must-have for Callahan fans as well as for anyone with a taste for excess and amusement.
Customer Reviews:
For Complainers Everywhere!.......2006-01-15
I don't know about you. But I get sick and tired of asking how someone is - and getting a tale of woe. Perhaps I am a bit hard on them. But frankly, having lived amid the so-called differently-abled for about 20 years...it is so remarkable that they are the least likely to complain; love John Callahan's books; laugh at themselves; and give me (a so-called "normal") the courage to go on. Thanks John! But could you please write some more books? We all really need them!!!
Beyond compare..........2001-06-29
Humor beyond compare. This book belongs in every nursing home, living resources center, self-help library -- not to mention on the nightstand of anyone who's ailing and needs a good laugh. A prolific cartoonist, all of Callahan's books are excellent, and none of the cartoons repeat in any of his several volumes. The vision of John Callahan is monumental. Don't miss the laughter; it will make you well.

Theorizing About Intercultural Communication
ASIN: 0292751990 |
Book Description
As United States television programs, movies, music, and other cultural products make their way around the globe, a vigorous debate over "cultural imperialism" is growing in many countries. This book brings together experts in economics, sociology, anthropology, the humanities, and communications to explore what effects the North American Free Trade Agreement will have on the flow of cultural products among Mexico, the United States, and Canada. After an overview of free trade and the cultural industries, the book covers the following topics: dominance and resistance, cultural trade and identity in relation to Mexico and to French Canada, and intellectual property rights. Based on present trends, the contributors predict that there will be a steadily increasing flow of cultural products from the United States to its neighbors. This book grew out of a 1994 conference that brought together leaders of the cultural industries, policy makers, and scholars. It represents state-of-the-art thinking about the global influence of U.S. cultural industries.

The Manly Art: Bare-Knuckle Prize Fighting in America
ASIN: 0820468061 |
Book Description
Whereas many of the men of Reagan's '80s seemed stereotypically hypermasculine, a host of '90s images suggest a new phase of more sensitive manhood. In the Clinton era, both academic and popular writers suggested that a "crisis of masculinity" had taken rootone that had men questioning traditional male ideas and seeking new identities. This book explores the conflicted ways in which this seemingly new climate of masculinity was negotiated. From Bill Clinton to The Promise Keepers and Titanic to Friends, a host of '90s heroes put this rhetoric of crisis to work to win elections, audience members, and ratings.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful and enjoyable - a rare gem........2006-02-10
Academic by nature, this book ran the risk of reading like a doctoral dissertation. However, Malin cleverly sidesteps that trap by infusing his work with humor and insight into the relationship between modern man and popular culture. The result is a piece worthy of scholarly recognition, yet accessible to everyone. A true rarity.

Very Good Study Guide - Test Engine Could Be Better.......2006-10-15
The text is joy to read; it is both lucid and succinct. However, with a 2003 copyright, it is beginning to show its age. There is no mention of Juniper's new routers, such as the M320 or the T-series, though these might not be covered on the JNCIA exam. And the preferred placement of some configuration statements within the JUNOS hierarchy has changed in more recent JUNOS releases.
Many of the questions included with the test engine include 15-20 line snippets of JUNOS configuration. Unfortunately, the test engine only allows a few lines of a question to be displayed at any time, so scrolling is needed to read such questions. Moreover, the test engine provides no facility for remembering from session to session which questions you answered right and wrong so that you can limit the questions presented in a later session to only those previously missed. The assessment test and end of chapter questions are printed in the book, so pencil and paper methods may work better for these.
Great Study Guide.......2004-01-07
I highly recommend this book as a review for the associates exam. I hadn't touched a Juniper in two years this study guide got me through recertification.
Good book - Helps alot with the exam.......2003-12-29
The book does a good job at preparation for the JNCIA exam. It goes over each topic well, and gives some good real world examples that make sense. Be prepared though, this is not a CCNA type exam that asks you theory and questions that do not apply to real life (ie. classful routing). This book (and exam) do concentrate on operational aspects, so the book does a good job at introducing CLI commands and the JunOS CLI architecture. It is recommended that you get ahold of a Juniper box to play around in to get the hang of things.
I have to disagree with the authors writing about the BGP architecture on the Internet, though. To state that only Tier 1 ISP's connect at exchange points (atleast how it was depicted in a drawing) is completely wrong. And usage of the Tier1/Tier2/Tier3 names should not be used in todays internet. Today plenty of people are paying for peering from some of the larger networks out there to give themselves the image of "Tier 1". It seems perhaps the authors should be more aware of real ISP operations in respects to how peering is actually done on the Internet today (ie. read the peering playbook by Bill Norton).
JNCIA: Juniper Networks Certified Internet Associate Study G.......2003-06-05
This is a great book! It will not give you the test questions and answers for the test. What it will provide is a great source of information relating to routing and an introduction to Juniper's routers. The depth of information in Juniper Networks Certified Internet Associate Study Guide is sufficient to pass the test. The questions in the book and on the CD require the same level of understanding as the actual JNCIA exam. In fact I scored the same on the bonus exams (located on the CD) as I did on the actual test. I have been working with Cisco equipment for over eight year and with Juniper routers for a little over a year. I have my CCNP and CCDP. With my background, this book and three weeks, now I have my JNCIA certification. Don't take the JNCIA certification test lightly. I would rate it at the same level as the CCNP and CCDP. With this book and some time you should be able to pass the exam.

Customer Reviews:
AP Euro Student.......2005-09-18
I took AP Euro as a Sophmore. This book was a major factor in me getting a 5 on the test. Its dull a times but with the right teacher this book will do you woneders on the AP test in May. Im takin AP Us now and my book is anecdotal and written in a narrative style. thus its almost impossible to take notes in. This book separated into chapters, some of which pertain to social themes of that particular time, otheres to political and economic. In short if you are looking to get 3 or above on the AP Euro test, this is the book for you.
Bit convoluted, but still useful.......2005-08-18
Although the text tends to skip around in regards to dates (one paragraph is on the 1300s, then the next section is back to the 1200s) it is overall a good tool for the European history scholar.
To Kagan!.......2005-03-07
Within my AP Euro class we affectionately referred to this book as Kagan (the first listed author, as compared to McKay our other textbook). I must say the opposite of another review talking comparing this textbook to Bailey's The American Pageant. The concensus I have found now that my grade is studying American is a nostalgia for Kagan as we find Baily to be pretensiously written. Kagan was filledwith memorable yet not onoxious writing. The sort of high quality writing that when you answered a question in class your answer would automatically use the same used as in the textbook without your notice.
terrible!.......2005-02-28
This textbook is boring, pretentiously written, and does not present the information in a concise, understandable way. I am currently using it for an AP European History class, and after a year of using Bailey's "The American Pageant" for AP US, the difference is so blatant. The American Pageant breaks down time periods concisely into clear paragraphs and you don't fall asleep reading it. Often with this text, I find myself having to read the same page 10 times to actually comprehend it, it's that dull. I passed the AP US exam, but I'm not so sure about the AP Euro (due in part to the teacher, and in part to this inferior text.)
Drink a lot of caffeine before reading this book.......2003-09-29
Up until now, I have been completely infatuated in anything European and anything to do with history. I then naturally enrolled myself in the A.P. Euro. Hist. course at my school. I must say that I have never read a textbook more boring and less comprehensive than this, and I most definitely feel that it is wearing away at my deep-founded love for history. It explores concepts at an extremely vague level, almost to the point where it makes the reader (or at least me) want to take it out and burn it. I have asked my teacher if I may use an older textbook called "The History of the Modern World", which, despite its advanced age and total lack of pictures (I love my pictures), I find so much more interesting and far, far, far more comprehensive than "The Western Heritage" could ever be. Compare reading this book to spending and hour and a half each night watching and studying "Mr. Roger's Neighbourhood", and you'd understand what I mean by "boring". My best advice would be to drink large amounts of caffeine before attempting to read this book.

Book Description
"Excellent book! As his text moves from the discoveries of Madame Curie to the immense benefits that radiation processes provide to mankind, Alan Walter shows how her words, 'Nothing in life is to be feared, it is to be understood,' guided her work and those of later researchers. . . . From her pioneering work to a broad-based range of industries contributing more than $400 billion annually to the US economy and over 4 million jobs, Dr. Walter weaves a fascinating narrative of human exploration and technology utilization." US SENATOR PETE DOMENICI, Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee
"The importance of this book is immeasurable. Dr. Walter's engaging discourse broadens our understanding of the impact and value of radiation technology in every realm of our lives. His insights reveal the humanity of the history and application of Marie Curie's science and may ultimately provide the essential knowledge we need to deliver us from our fears." THE HONORABLE J. BENNETT JOHNSTON, Former US Senator, 1972-1997
"Dr. Walter takes us on an incredible journey through a vast universe of beneficial uses of radiation that contribute to abundance in our supply of energy, water, and food; protect our health, our homeland, and the environment; and make possible our scientific exploration of the human genetic map and the far reaches of space. His narrative style makes this vitally important story accessible and interesting for us all." JOE F. COLVIN, President and Chief Executive Officer, Nuclear Energy Institute, Washington, DC
"Alan Walter has written an invaluable and highly readable book. Readers will be stunned by the indispensable role radiation has come to play in our contemporary lives, from awe-inspiring medical and agricultural uses to everyday consumer and safety applications. It's hard to imagine how anyone could be nuclear-phobic after this." SUSAN EISENHOWER, Chairman of the Eisenhower Institute, Washington, DC.

Excellent Overview of Applications of Nuclear Technology.......2006-08-17
I have worked as a physicist in the nuclear field for just over 30 years. Since my work has been of a very narrow specialized nature, I never kept myself fully up-to-date on the incredible diversity of uses for nuclear technology. Consequently, reading this book was indeed an eye-opener for me. The author, a nuclear engineer, discusses a variety of uses of nuclear technology in a wide range of areas, including agriculture, medicine, power generation, industry, transportation, space exploration, public safety, arts and sciences, environmental protection and modern economy. Writing in a very chatty style, the author is quite detailed in most of his descriptions, but he interspersed them with several personal anecdotes, thus adding to one's reading enjoyment. Although an early chapter contains basic information on radiation, i.e., its nature, sources, means of measurement and health risks, a reader who is completely unfamiliar with the subject matter may find a few passages in the book a bit harder to follow. However, these passages are few such that this most informative and well-written book can be enjoyed by a very wide audience. I highly recommend it!
Pro Radiaton, not Con - One thing at a time!.......2005-02-25
The tenor of the book is sincerely enthusiastic. It reminded me of my youth, when from a yearbook of science and technology I learnt that with nuclear power plants, we could expect electricity for practically no fuel. As an engineering student I learnt, as if that was a law of the solar system, that electricity consumption increases immutably, by 8% per year. Also familiar from my youth, over half a century ago, is the idea of desalination plants to irrigate deserts in proximity of oceans. Waltar reports that desalination requires a lot of energy, but that nuclear power can now provide that, and even produce nuclear-based electricity and drinking water simultaneously in one integrated plant. Other ideas that could not fail to impress me are the elimination of most of the nuclear waste disposal problem by using breeder reactors which recycle waste into new fuels, and the use of antimatter power in space flight, which would be ten billion times more efficient than chemical power like from a Saturn V booster rocket. Fission power as now used in some places on Earth is only ten million times more efficient.
What the cost of all that efficiency might be, Waltar does not aim to explain. Opposition to radiation technologies is mentioned rarely and mostly condescendingly. To convince consumers that radiation in our lives cannot be rolled back, he lumps informational applications of radiation and nuclear power together into the radiation technologies industry, which is bigger than General Motors (in terms of "economic impact", by plain sales it would not be). Jobs created by radiation technologies are shown off, but jobs lost with the industries or occupations displaced are not mentioned. And he points out that radiation is all over the universe. This is a fact - but not a relevant one: We humans are here, with other living beings, only because we have an atmosphere that protects us from the harshness of the rest of the universe. Waltar covers many technical and historical details by referring to other publications, keeping the book reasonably easy to read for ordinary literate people, though rich in scope. Studies cited about the harmlessness and even purported health benefits of low level radiation were typically done in remote countries (or in military secrecy) under difficult record-keeping circumstances, and are viewed sceptically by careful life scientists, in contrast to physicists and engineers like Waltar. In potential public impact, the book is a major challenge.

Radiation and Modern Life.......2005-02-21
This was an excellent book to read for any lay person or student on the many uses of ionizing radiation in modern life. It was amazing to learn of the many applications and benefits we have received as a result of radiation, and Prof. Waltar did an excellent job providing this information in a very readable narrative explaining the benefits as well as short comings of radiation. This book covers the benefits of nuclear medicine, nuclear power, agriculture, transportation, water, waste lean up, the arts, scientific exploration of space and more. Great Job! Fun to read!
