Respect People.......2005-06-24

The former CEO of Ford Motor Company firmly believed that the way to achieve quality work is to respect people, get them to "buy into" the idea that their work matters, and signficant positive results will follow. The theme of this book is the Golden Rule Jesus taught, "Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you."

Petersen saw the need for this approach to management because he was treated with such disrespect in one of the units where he was placed early in his career. His epiphany was that this work unit was operating in a way that caused misery at work, and mediocre output. He realized that relationships among people in an organization are vital for success. Edwards Deming was brought in as Petersen worked his way up the corporation. Deming's strategies included measurement techniques to gange corporate success. Employees across the board realized that their input mattered, and things changed for the better. Petersen is a good man speaking well. He makes a lot of valid points in this book.

In economics, the emergence of New Growth Theory in recent decades has directed attention to an old and important problem: what are the forces of economic growth and how can public policy enhance them? This book examines major forces of growth--including spillover effects and externalities, education and formation of human capital, knowledge creation through deliberate research efforts, and public infrastructure investment. Unique in emphasizing the importance of different forces for particular stages of development, it offers wide-ranging policy implications in the process.

The authors critically examine recently developed endogenous growth models, study the dynamic implications of modified models, and test the models empirically with modern time series methods that avoid the perils of heterogeneity in cross-country studies. Their empirical analyses, undertaken with newly constructed time series data for the United States and some core countries of the Euro zone, show that models containing scale effects, such as the R&D model and the human capital model, are compatible with time series evidence only after considerable modifications and nonlinearities are introduced. They also explore the relationship between growth and inequality, with particular focus on technological change and income disparity. The Forces of Economic Growth represents a comprehensive and up-to-date empirical time series perspective on the New Growth Theory.

Satellites enable European broadcasters to televise programs to vast transnational audiences. This activity is supported by a regime of freedom of transborder broadcasting under EC law, European human rights law and other areas of public international law. The program contents of broadcasts will on occasion give rise to claims of injury to private law interests, including the interest in reputation. The defamation laws of Europe's nations are however by no means uniform: the same transmission may give rise to liability under one national system but to no liability under another. The material outcome of a given claim will thus rest on the existing regime of private international law applied by Europe's national courts, including rules governing forum, choice of law and foreign judgments. It is against the above background of private international law that Defamation via Satellite examines Europe's prospects of realizing the public international law regime of free transborder broadcasting.

The theoretical background of cytogenetics as well as the practical methods to investigate chromosomes from Drosophila to mammals and humans are presented in this book. Theory and practical protocols on the following topics are included: Cell culture methods, chromosome preparation and banding techniques, radioactive and fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) methods and their derivates (chromosome painting), meiotic chromosome methods using light and electronic microscopy, the polytenic (Drosophila) and lampbrush (urodeles) chromosomes as well as flow and slit scan cytometry. The editors, all at INRA, played a prominent part in the development of cytogenetics. Paul Popescu, a specialist for domestic animals worked with gene mapping, Helene Hayes, together with Popescu showed the homology of bovine and human chromosome disorders, and Bernard Dutrilaux focused on human cytogenetics.

the second worst textbook out there.......2004-03-05

the only thing that makes this book shine is that it isnt as incomplete as my professor's own personal book... its almost as if any teacher that requires these materials secretly wishes the students to fail miserably... written at the third grade level with plenty of, "Isn't physics nifty!" and no actualy help in the computational realm... for a class that is supposed to have advanced calculus as a prereq, the math is presented in an oversimplified matter making the only way to learn the material to struggle through the problems to discover something that could have been explained in place of one of the many cartoons that litter this exscuse for scholorly material...

Not the Best Physics Textbook.......2001-01-13

I have used several physics textbooks both as a high school and college student. This is one of the worst textbooks I have used however. It is very inconsistent. Some chapters are overly simple and progress too slowly. Others are short, difficult and lack sufficient examples and explanations. The book rarely explains the origins of a formula enough to get a good understanding of its use. Furthermore, there are frequent misprints throughout the text. Unfortunately, most of the people who purchase this book have no choice because it is required for a class.

This has to have been one of the worst books I've read in years. The writing was difficult to follow. The subject matter was offensive, and didn't come off as remotely funny. I was totally repulsed by this book.

Another Crazyass novel by the wickedly funny Lucy Ellmann.......2006-03-06

Wow...Lucy Ellmann is not for everyone, and I actually thought Dot in the Universe is a better book, but I still heartily recommend Doctors and Nurses. That said, this book is not for everyone. Ellman's over the top style and in your face grossness may freak out the weak of heart, but if you like very dark, biting humor this books is for you!
