5 out of 5 stars Excellent supplement and source for homework problems.......2006-10-20

While this book could not possibly be used as a textbook for a basic statistics class, it has significant promise as a supplement. It could be used as the source of homework problems that would not only be challenging, but also fun to complete. There are 58 different problems covering a wide range of statistical concepts. It begins with a review of basic mathematics principles such as order of operations and variable manipulation and goes through data sets, standard normal curve, regression, hypothesis testing, chi square, ANOVA and non-parametric tests.
There is a question at the start of each problem, some of which are:

*) What do you get if you cross a jeweler and a plumber?
*) Why did the muffler person quit her job?
*) What is in the "honeymoon salad?"

The answer to the riddle is found by working through the problems and then mapping the solutions to letters or words. There is a companion answer key for instructors. Before each problem there is a page devoted to a tip for success in statistics. They are fairly standard, some of which are:

*) Read the problem carefully, making sure you understand each word.
*) Don't assume that because the number appears on the calculator that it is automatically right.
*) Where appropriate, work the problem on graph paper.

This book could be used to teach statistics at both the high school and college levels. From my experience teaching education majors, I think that they would find it especially interesting and fun to work through.

Like many artists, Jack Nicholson has done some hideous things. Like some, he has insisted that they be kept quiet.

After reading this book it will be hard to enjoy him as an actor, but not impossible. One thing which does come through is his absolute devotion to his craft.

                And then there's his eyebrows.

He has a natural demonic appearach because he has arched eyebrows. They make him look Satanic and maybe worse...

                Enjoy the book!

In this book the author states that he interviewed me, included quotes as well. I never met nor talked with Mr. Thompson, even though he writes that he interviewed me in my "Palm Beach home". I've never lived in Palm Beach. He claims to have talked with my father. That meeting never took place. Alas, if this part of the book was fiction, where's the credibility to prove that the rest is true? Too many "confidential sources". Using that as a crutch you can say anything about anyone. I know the many truths in Jack Nicholsons real story and from what I can tell, Peter Thompson has fallen short on uncovering and perhaps even knowing what the truth is. By the way, biologically speaking, I am Mr. Nicholson's half sister.

                Book Description

In Disturbing Pleasures Henry A. Giroux demonstrates how his well-known theories of education, critical pedagogy and popular culture can be put to use in the classroom and in other cultural settings. Adding an entirely new dimension to his thinking about the cultural sites at which pedagogical practice takes place, Giroux illustrates how professors, school teachers and other cultural workers can appropriate what he refers to as a "pedagogy of cultural studies."

Using cultural texts rather than cultural theories as his point of departure, the first part of Disturbing Pleasures showcases Giroux's unrivalled ability to identify a range of pedagogical activity occurring beyond the classroom--at the movies, in front of the television, even by glancing at provocative advertisements. His stinging analyses of cultural objects and subjects--the interracial Benetton ad campaign, the Disney empire, the New racism in films like Grand Canyon, Whittle Communicationsand Julia Roberts' role in Pretty Woman--extend the reach of his theory by illustrating how learning popular culture becomes intimately linked not only to issues of commercialism and consumerism but to forms of pleasure, possibility and struggle.

The second part of the volume illustrates the multiple classroom applications of Giroux's theory. Choosing an accessible, even personal voice for this purpose, Giroux shares his own experiences as a teacher: how he conducts his classes, his struggles over the politics of his location as a teacher, writing exercises he organizes around popular culture and the texts he selects and interrogates. These personal reflections not only profile Giroux as a scholar equally committed to theory and practice, but more importantly, provide for educators and cultural workers valuable guidelines for thinking through the ways cultural texts can make a marked difference in the classrooms, educations and lives of students.

Giroux puts the world of popular culture under the microscope from an educator's perspective and successfully deconstructs such entities as Disney and the Edison project. It is a must read for educators or anyone disenchanted with the state of pop-culture in america and its pervasive nature.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, social, anthropological role-playing game.......2001-11-14

(Note: Additional stars may be applicable. See below!)

How did human cultures and mores arise? _Tribes_, a specialized sort of roleplaying game, attempts to answer it through play and experimentation.

_Tribes_ was created by SF author David Brin, and game designing legend Steve Jackson. It's a physically minimal game, with paper components. If you're interested in PLAY of game, and don't mind the lack of slick or commercial production, add a half-star!

The players -- I'd say you need at least six, while twelve is too many -- represent members of a tribe of early humans. The winners (one male, one female) are the ones who end the game with the most surviving children. (An early version of the game was called "Darwinopoly.")

The game is played on a very simple board with four regions (plains, hills, swamp, forest) each of which has a different variety of plants and animals to hunt or gather. Much of the playing surface is occupied by charts and tables, e.g., a timeline to determine how far along your kids are toward maturity.

In each round, players decide whether they're going to spend their time hunting, gathering, guarding children (there are hyeanas about), and making craft items (baskets or spear points). Also, they decide who they're going to sleep with! Successful mating means the female character gets pregnant, of course.

This is a VERY social game. Lots of arguing and bargaining occur. The games I've played (I was a playtester) were all VERY enjoyable. The game is successfull in that, from a simple set of game rules, _social_ rules emerge.

_Tribes_ isn't something you'll play super-often. It's something to have fun with once in a while. The good news is it's easy to learn, so you can spring it on friends and acquaintances who might not normally be into a role-playing game. Add another half-star if this doesn't bother you.

3 out of 5 stars Not a book, but an interesting game........2001-03-10

This is a game by David Brin and Steve Jackson. It's fairly cheaply made - consisting of a thin black & white rulebook and a cardstock sheet of counters which you have to cut out yourself. But they weren't expecting to sell the game to the masses anyway. In short, it's a simple simulation of tribal life during the stone age. You hunt, gather, procreate and try to survive. If you're interested in anthropology or fairly quick and simple but interesting games, give it a try.

                4 out of 5 stars Worth a read..........2001-02-14

Interesting documentary style storyline. Definitely worth a read if you like Brin style racconts...

Master the latest MPLS VPN solutions to design, deploy, and troubleshoot advanced or large-scale networks

With MPLS and VPN Architectures, Volume II, you'll learn:

MPLS and VPN Architectures, Volume II, builds on the best-selling MPLS and VPN Architectures, Volume I (1-58705-002-1), from Cisco Press. Extending into more advanced topics and deployment architectures, Volume II provides readers with the necessary tools they need to deploy and maintain a secure, highly available VPN.

MPLS and VPN Architectures, Volume II, begins with a brief refresher of the MPLS VPN Architecture. Part II describes advanced MPLS VPN connectivity including the integration of service provider access technologies (dial, DSL, cable, Ethernet) and a variety of routing protocols (IS-IS, EIGRP, and OSPF), arming the reader with the knowledge of how to integrate these features into the VPN backbone. Part III details advanced deployment issues including security, outlining the necessary steps the service provider must take to protect the backbone and any attached VPN sites, and also detailing the latest security features to allow more advanced topologies and filtering. This part also covers multi-carrier MPLS VPN deployments. Finally, Part IV provides a methodology for advanced MPLS VPN troubleshooting.

MPLS and VPN Architectures, Volume II, also introduces the latest advances in customer integration, security, and troubleshooting features essential to providing the advanced services based on MPLS VPN technology in a secure and scalable way.

This book is part of the Networking Technology Series from Cisco Press(r), which offers networking professionals valuable information for constructing efficient networks, understanding new technologies, and building successful careers.

                        Book Description

Tea came late to popularity in England—after its arrival in Portugal, Holland, and France—but it quickly became a national obsession. And business. Tea gardens and tea shops sprang up everywhere in seventeenth-century England. Demand soon spread to the colonies, where the heavy taxation on tea led to smuggling on a massive scale and, in the New World, cost England her American empire. Tea also drove the British to war with China, to guarantee the supply of pekoe, and it prompted colonists to clear jungles in India, Ceylon, and Africa for huge tea plantations. In time the cultivation of tea would subject more than one million laborers to wretched, often inhuman working conditions. Hundreds of thousands of them would die for the commodity that for four centuries propelled Britain’s economy and epitomized the reach of its empire. Bringing colorful detail and narrative skill to this history, author Roy Moxham—once a tea planter himself—maps the impact of a monumental and imperial British enterprise. In this book, he offers a fully fascinating, and frequently shocking, tale of England’s tea trade—of the lands it claimed, the people it exploited, the profits it garnered, and the cups it filled.

                        5 out of 5 stars Tea: A Magnanimous Perspective.......2007-01-19

I agree with the comments already posted. My love for tea began with a trip to England and France 5 years ago, then India in Jan '06. I have over 45 pounds of loose tea, and have tried over 150 different teas. Reading this book changed how i felt while drinking tea. This "took some of the fun" out of tea drinking for me. I am more aware of the economic hardships tea pickers endure, and the horrid conditions they suffered for decades. I am now getting into Fair Trade/Organic loose teas, and try to educate people/buyers at the gourmet food store i work at. If you think you know tea, read this book! It will open your eyes, and maybe push you into some action.

4 out of 5 stars Tea, Tea and More Tea.......2006-11-02

I found the book to be a fascinating look (from a British prospective) and the history of tea. From the plant's beginnings in China to its spread to India and then Africa it's all there. What is different is the majority of the book is dedicated to the overwhelming suffering of the people who grew and harvested the tea from the plantations. Even the Chinese suffered as the British sought to balance the trade imbalance by hooking the Chinese on opium, with devastating effects. One problem I do have is that the author spends so much of the book on the suffering of the growers that his very interesting personal story is cut off. It's as if he was told he had 272 pages and no more. I can't see how the proof-readers and editors went to press with such a hang at the end. This is the reason I give the book 4 stars. Overall it's a great book; just don't expect to find out what happens to the author at the plantation he was managing in Africa.

                        5 out of 5 stars Engaging book.......2005-11-05

Roy Moxham's book on Tea is an absorbing read, and is peppered with very useful information and traces the history of tea. Perhaps, Moxham has started off a trend of sorts on single commodity books. His first was about salt and the great hedge of India. In that book his focus was more on the hedge, and less on salt. However in this book is focus is exclusively on tea and how it made its way to the western world.

Moxham's stint as a tea-planter in Africa certainly helps him to gain keen insights into this drink, that is beloved to so many of us. A cup of tea is meant to soothe your jangled nerves, and comfort you. But, what you did not know is that this comfort drink went through a bloody and dark period when it was introduced into Great Britain.

The book is rich with details, and Moxham's love for this plant comes through clearly. After reading the book, everytime I drink a cup of tea I look at the drink with a different perspective. We often forget the hard work that goes into making this comfort drink easily available to us.

5 out of 5 stars The British Love Affair with Tea .......2005-10-04

Tea plantations are beautiful and the tea industry has an antiquarian charm. The author, Roy Moxham. captures some of that charm in this book -- but doesn't neglect describing the seamy side of British colonialism in India, China, Sri Lanka, and Africa. Moxham doesn't go much into botanical descriptions of tea or growing and harvesting techniques, but focuses on the history of tea consumption and production.

Moxham catalogs the growing addiction of the British to tea in the 18th century and the efforts of British colonialists to grow the stuff in the 19th and 20th century. The story of tea growing in the Assam district of India is dirty indeed -- typical of colonial ventures around the world. Some of the stories of the exploitation of workers during the early days of tea growing are horrific. The author also describes briefly the principal tea dealers in England, past and present, and their marketing techniques. So addicted are Britains to the daily 'cuppa' that tea during World Wars of the Twentieth Century was considered a vital commodity.

One of the more interesting sections of the book was the author's brief description of his work on a tea estate in Malawi (Nyasaland) in the 1960s. The book concludes abruptly as he finishes his first year on the estate, giving the impression that a sequel may be in the works.

This is a good little book with a few illustrations and maps, a list of the various kinds of tea, and a good bibliography for those inspired to dig more deeply into the subject.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Thoroughly Fascinating Book.......2004-08-05

I borrowed this book from my local library to read on vacation. Once I started it, I found it hard to put down. Mr. Moxham made even the mundane parts of tea's history fascinating. I felt as if I had gone back in time and witnessed the many incidents he relayed. I particularly enjoyed how he opened and closed the book with his own experience on a tea plantatation in Africa in the early 1960s. This book was a real historical eye-opener for me on many counts, as well as entertaining and well written. If you enjoy your tea and history, I highly recommend you read this book!

I bought this book for my 11 year old son. Our encyclopedia set was a bit overwhelming for him so I thought a science dictionary would be less intimidating. He just loves it. He spends hours just flipping pages and reading entries that interest him. Definitions are concise yet not over simplified with plenty of examples and pictures to keep everything clear. Major topics are discussed in length making this more than just a dictionary. I enjoy browsing through it myself. Science is fascinating when properly explained. He brought it to school and the other kids all agreed that this book is "cool". This is an excellent book for adults and children. This is a must have book for your reference collection.
