I am impressed by this book at many levels: (1) it provides a much needed resource for all of us who work with college students and wish to help these students succeed. Dr. Hirsch accomplishes this with clear writing, appropriate humor, and excellent resources; (2) it can be used by anyone who work with students: faculty, student affairs professionals, and in the professional preparation of the above. (3) it is practical in its orientation, yet does not patronize the reader. I plan to use this as a text in my graduate counseling fieldwork course. I highly recommend this book to anyone affiliated with college students. The book fills an important gap in our applied literature and Dr. Hirsch's thorough work is most appreciated by this faculty person.

This is a good resource for students, too........2001-11-11

Hirsch argues that colleges have done students a disservice from separating counseling from academic helping. Hirsch's view is that helpers must evaluate why the student is there and how motivated the student is. He suggests ways to figure this out and targets his interventions accordingly, framing them with numerous "case studies." His entire tack is that academic helping is not a one-size-fits-all field (is there any?) but that it should be adapted to the student's abilities, preferences, and emotional climate.

He also gives a large number of helpful tips for many "success" problems, such as low motivation, anxiety, lack of attention or concentration, classroom boredom, and procrastination. Hirsch's writing is very clear, and his lists are fairly extensive (with items in bold to pick out the key points easily). I believe that there will be something of use here to anyone interested in student success, including students themselves.

For those who have taken the MBTI, he also gives several pages of evaluation directed towards each axis' learning style, possible weaknesses, and study skill suggestions. For example, I's need time alone to process information, P's may have difficulty closing the book on an assignment, and N's should try writing study questions that force attention to detail.

Starting with the organization of tobacco workers and a few other groups in the last years of Spanish colonial rule, Robert J. Alexander traces the growth of the labor movement during the early decades of the republic, noting particularly the influence of three political tendencies: anarchosyndicalists, Marxists, and "independents." He examines the generally unfavorable attitudes of early republican governments to the labor movement, and he discusses the first central labor body, the CNOC, which was at first under anarchist influence, and soon captured by the Communists. The role of the CNOC vis-a-vis the Machado dictatorship, including the "deal" with Machado in 1933 is also discussed. Alexander then looks at the unions during the short Grau San Martine "nationalist" regime of 1933 and the near-destruction of organized labor by the Batista dictatorship of 1934-1937; the revival of the labor movement after the 1937 "deal" of the Communists with Batista and the establishment of the Confederacion de Trabajadores de Cuba, as well as the struggles for power within it, resulting in a split in the CTC in 1947, with the dominance of the Autentico-party controlled group. During this period regular collective bargaining became more or less the rule. He then describes the deterioration of the Confederacion of Trabajadores de Cuba under the Batista dictatorship of 1952-1959. Alexander ends with a description of organized labor during the Castro regime: the early attempt of revolutionary trade unionists to establish an independent labor movement, followed by the Castro government's seizure of control of the CTC and its unions, and the conversion of the Cuban labor movement into one patterned after the Stalinist model of a movement designed to stimulate production and productivity--under government control--instead of defending the rights and interests of the unions' members. Based on an extensive review of Cuban materials as well as Alexander's numerous interviews, correspondence, and conversations with key figures from the late 1940s onward, this is the most comprehensive English-language examination of organized labor in Cuba ever written. Essential reading for all scholars and students of Cuban and Latin American labor and economic affairs as well as important to political scientists and historians of the region.

Good leadershipship principles by U.S. Grant........2007-09-22

Grant may have been a poor President, but he was a great General. This book expounds the leadership principles of his war years. Grant was not only decisive, but he could also admit to mistakes. His treatment of his fellow officers shows he was a born leader. In three years, he rose from being a store clerk to a four star general. He did this using his courage, common sense, and good decision making. Lincoln may have saved the Union through his political leadership, but U.S. Grant saved it militarily with his good leadership.

This is a easy to read book. The book is in excess of three hundred pages, but most of the pages are not full. Some two hundred and fifty principles are detailed in the leadership of U.S. Grant. Too bad Grant did not use some of these principles in his Presidency.

Kaltman has done the research for you and put it all in a great lesson by lesson format. Any leader can refer to this book for day to day operations.

True to Grant's Character and Management Theory.......2007-03-15

Well researched book that explored both Grant's personality and effective leadership. I found it a nice change of pace from most management texts. Done in small bites, it would be great for use in class or discussion group. I felt it started rather simplicistically, but improved quickly. I especially appreciated the chapter at the end that explored why such a successful General was considered far less effective as a President. Good investment for any management bookshelf.

Excellent practice exams, need to add MBS case study.......2005-05-10

This book includes good review sections that are short and concise. It also includes four excellent practice exams: two for A and two for AB. Unlike some review books, descriptions of problems are very clear. The free response questions are about the level of actual exams, while the multiple-choice problems may be slightly easier than actual ones.

As pointed out by other reviews, the book does not include MBS case study. It also does not provide explanations on the answers. It could also improve the review section by adding some more details; yet still keep the reviews in its concise style.

Good Review, Horrible Explanations........2004-03-28

This is an okay book, it has a good review(and not very long like Barron's book), good questions, and adequete tips for both the multiple choice [section] and the free response. One big problem I had with this book is that there are NO explanations for any of the answers to the questions. If there is a review book for any test and no explanations for any of the answers it hase a serious problem. Also, there wasn't anything that showed you how to grade the practice tests, not even how to calculate a raw score. At least show us how to calculate a raw score, then we will have just some idea of how well we are doing. If you are going to buy this book I would suggest buying either Litvin's or Barron's (though it reteaches you the material) book along with this book.

The Practice Exams in this book are good in general, but be careful they don't include the Marine Biology Simulation Case Study at all. (Litvin's book does cover the MBS case study adequately.)

One of the few temporary sucess for the Indians.............2005-01-12

A very interesting book on a rare event where the Indians actually drove out their white conquerors from a long established colony. In 1680, the Pueblo Indians of northern New Mexico rose up in massive revolt against their Spanish overlords and managed for a short time, to regained their independence from colonial rule. This revolt came after nearly four generations of colonial rule where continued Spanish misrule generated this revolt.

The book proves to be well written and researched as the author explained how this revolt came to be. According to the author, much of for the revolt had to do with the following factors. Rejection of Christianity, economic dependency on the white, inter-racial marriages between whites and Indians and how that reflects on the fact that small numbers of Europeans were controlling larger numbers of Indians. In four generations, many of the Spanish colonialists have intermarried with the local Indians, blurring the racial lines. White intimidation fades as the conqerors and the conquered blended in.

The book proves to be a short read but it turned out to be very informative and rather an eye-opener. Spanish did managed to reconquered New Mexico once more in the 1690s, never again were the Indians sucessful in pushing out their European overlords which have been in place for generations. (It would be like if the 1862 Dakota Indian Revolt in Minnesota were successful!) The book come highly recommended for those interested in western colonial history.
