Topnotch refresher and beginner book.......2006-08-10

This book utilizes logical sequence to improve your knowledge of the latest electrical controls. I especially like the early refresher in basics then it quickly moves on the more complex theory. The diagrams and photos are clear and easily understood. The old saying a picture is worth a thousand words. This book is being used by maintenance departments to help their mechanics learn electricity and electrical trouble shooting.

If you grew up in the '70s, you are a bad person. It's not your fault. Spending all those nights at the disco watching Gerry Ford and Karen Carpenter dance the night away with the cast of "Hello, Larry", that's going to leave a mark. But nothing cut quite so deep as the National Lampoon. This bound edition of material from the first several years(along with some previously unpublished articles) sums up the attack dog humor that would later be memorialized in SNL, Animal House, Caddyshack, and Jane Austin's Mafia. Well, maybe the first three.

In short, if you are a bitter, angry social malcontent who wishes to see hatred gleefully and comically spray-painted over everything you call holy, buy this book. Or they'll shoot your dog.

EXCELLENT!!!.......2007-06-19

I am not a programmer - not even close- but am responsible for developing complex Access & Excel applications. Most books are written as if the user understands programming concepts. This book did not. It explained EVERYTHING in detail. It was exactly what I needed. If you need a book that assumes you KNOW NOTHING - this is the book for you. I am so so so glad that I read user reviews. I am so happy, and excited about writing modules rather than avoiding it like the plague.

Most Excellent Book.......2006-08-01

I have many books on Visual Basic for Applications, none of them explain the concept like this one does. Mr. Evan Callahan breaks things down in laymans terms. I have learned and accomplished more using his book than any I own. I will not buy books written by other authors-Mr. Evan Callahan has all of my business from this day forward. Hat's off Mr. Callahan and am looking forward to a 2003 visual basic for applications.

Excellent for Beginners.......2003-03-10

So you have created your Access database and have exhausted every wizard and control that you can use without actually coding. You still need a little something, but aren't sure how to get a little (or a lot) more out of Access - then this is the book for you.
This book will ease you into writing come code while jumping right in with both feet. The examples are simple enough to understand, but you are given enough information to make them work for you. Many times when you are beginning, the example is exactly what you want to do, but you are not given enough information to insert it into your project and make it work - this is not the case here. I had this book (and its predicessor) open on my desk regularly during my first Access project and still crack it open for ideas and reference. (Sure I could look it up in an advanced book - but why?)
If you can only buy one beginner book on VBA - this should be it.

Very Good Beginner's Book.......2003-03-04

This book helped me a lot. I was at the point where I knew the basics of Access, but nothing about writing code. This book is excellent for taking you by the hand and helping you to start learning VBA. Another feature I really like is that the examples are examples that you are likely to find useful for the application you are developing. So I was able to got a very practical use out of this book (the Access 97 version is very similar).
On the negative side, sometimes the book gives poor explainations. For example, they never really explain why create variables, what's the advantage. There are several similar areas where the author simply never thought of explaining something that, to a beginner, is very confusing without an explaination.
So, by itself, the book is very helpful but you need other books to fill in the gaps. However, as far as I've seen, it's the best book I've seen to get you started in VBA.

Before I started I knew some VBA and some Access. This book helped to me learn the things I needed to know. Well written, organized, accurate.

It's NOT a good tutorial on either VBA or Access, tho.

In the years leading to the birth of Israel, Zerubavel shows, Zionist settlers in Palestine consciously sought to rewrite Jewish history by reshaping Jewish memory. Yael Zerubavel and Nadia Abu el Haj.......2007-08-16

Recovered Roots: Collective Memory and the Making of Israeli National Tradition by Yael Zerubavel discusses the construction of memory and the invention of traditions in Mandatory Palestine and in the State of Israel. The book describes some unusual Israeli or Zionist practices associated with Masada and Bar Kochba archeological excavations.

Rather like Nadia Abu el Haj in Facts on the Ground: Archaeological Practice and Territorial Self-Fashioning in Israeli Society, Zerubavel describes the use of archeology and other scholarship to construct Zionist national identity.

Other scholars have investigated the political use of archeology in various contexts. Not only Max Weinreich and Eric Hobsbawm provide similar analysis in their published works, but Constructing "Korean" Origins: A Critical Review of Archaeology, Historiography, and Racial Myth in Korean State Formation Theories by Hyung Il Pai addresses precisely that same issues with regard to the development of Korean national consciousness.

Even though Abu el Haj focuses more narrowly on professional archeologists whereas Zerubavel looks at Israeli society as a whole, both authors make similar points in their books, and Zerubavel provides support for some of the claims for which Nadia Abu el Haj has been most criticized.

Zerubavel received the 1996 Salo Baron Prize of the American Academy for Jewish Research for her work while Nadia Abu el Haj is the target of an international campaign to drive her out of Columbia/Barnard. The difference in the responses evoked by the two authors merits a scholarly study in itself.

Interesting.......2007-07-31

This book has a fascinating collection of data pertaining to events in ancient Israel and early 20th century pre-state Israel.

These include the Bar Kochba Revolt, the fall of Masada, and the murderous 1920 Arab assault on the Jewish community of Tel Hai in the upper Galilee, which killed six, including the legendary Jewish hero of the Russo-Japanese war of 1904, Joseph Trumpeldor.

There is also much useful data concerning the Jewish national consciousness.

Unfortunately, however, in the process of discussing Jewish history and the formation of national symbols, the author buys lock stock and barrel into complete fictions concerning the "discovery" of Palestinian national identity.

Unlike national Jewish identity, the Palestinian "national identity" was completely fabricated in the late 20th century, a bi-product of the Islamic war against the existence of a free and independent Jewish state, where Jewish, Christian and other (that is to say, non-Muslim) citizens maintain full citizenship and rights without the onerous burden of the traditional Islamic head-tax, or jizya.

In the context of accepting that false competing history, the author (perhaps unknowingly) also takes on the persona of a dhimmi, a non-Muslim willing to pay the head-tax (at least figuratively) and to diminish her own history into the bargain.

I found parts of this discussion interesting, and informative, but the conclusions completely ahistorical and useless.

This book stands unique among efforts to discuss comemoration and Israeli national character. Her selection of the three examples is brilliant in providing a window into collective consciousness and the construction of a people.

One can only hope that more such work will arise and be published. This book is a MUST HAVE for anone interested in Israel.

Just six numbers govern the shape, size, and texture of our universe. If their values were only fractionally different, we would not exist: nor, in many cases, would matter have had a chance to form. If the numbers that govern our universe were elegant--1, say, or pi, or the Golden Mean--we would simply shrug and say that the universe was an elegant mathematical puzzle. But the numbers Martin Rees discusses are far from tidy. Was the universe "tweaked" or is it one of many universes, all run by slightly different, but equally messy, rules?

This is familiar ground, though rarely so comprehensively explored. What makes Rees's book exceptional is his conviction that cosmology is as materialistic and as conceptually simple as any of the earth sciences. Indeed,

cosmology is simpler in one important respect: once the starting point is specified, the outcome is in broad terms predictable. All large patches of the universe that start off the same way end up statistically similar. In contrast, if the Earth's history were re-run, it could end up with a quite different biosphere.

Rees demonstrates how the cosmos is full of "fossils" from which we can deduce how our universe developed as surely as we infer the earth's past from the relics found in sedimentary rocks. Excellent Overview of Cosmology.......2006-10-08

There are many books on cosmology that cover essentially the same material. As can be expected, some of these books are better written than others. In my opinion, this small book is one of the better ones. Combining the very large, e.g., the universe, galaxies, etc., with the very small, e.g., atoms, nuclei and sub-atomic particles, the author discusses six numbers whose values are essential to our existence. He explains that if the value of any of these numbers was different from what it is, we would not be here to contemplate them. He also explains, in very lucid prose, why that is. The author's writing style is very clear - something that is essential when discussing such a complex subject - and quite engaging. This book would be of most interest to science buffs, but it can also be enjoyed by anyone wanting to know more about the strange, non-everyday concepts that fuel the field of cosmology.

ESSENTIAL reading for anyone interested in the cosmos. Just Six Numbers are the key properties of this universe. The slightest tweaking and this universe as it is would not exist.

Rees calculates the odds of the suite of universes capable of evolving sentitent beings to discuss said universe at one in 10 to the 243 power!!!!!!!!!!

"There are three great frontiers in science: the very big, the very small and the very complex. Cosmology involves them all." - Sir Martin Rees.

It takes sound grasp, knowledge and intellect to explain with clarity and simplicity. Sir Martin Rees achieves this here. He provides a useful, absorbing and accessible contribution to lay understanding of cosmology, astrophysics, mathematical astrophysics and so on.

In explaining why a 'Big Bang' (or 'Expansion') might account for our universe, Martin Rees pins his exposition around six key properties: 2 relating to basic forces, 2 to scale and structure, and 2 describing space.

By the end of this book you will understand more about cosmology and how it relates to chemistry, Newton's laws, the general theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, superstring & membrane theory, the search for a Grand Unification Theory, and so on.

Sir Martin also admits what remains to be discovered and how this might refine or deflate the 'Big Bang'. He also explores alternate theories and challenges (but does not here address 'Plasma Cosmology' or the revived interest in 'scalar particles'. However, due to the rate of new ideas entering the field since any such book's publication, this kind of omission is inevitable). Mercifully he does not embrace or expound any facile drivel of the 'Goddidit' variety.

If you wish to broaden or deepen your comprehension of cosmology, you will develop fascinating insights and a more encompassing horizon on the subject here.
