Book Description
The last 20 years have seen an influx of women into the practice of public relations, yet gender-based disparities in pay and advancement remain a troubling reality. As the field becomes feminized, moreover, female and male practitioners alike confront the prospect of dwindling salaries and prestige. This landmark book presents a comprehensive examination of the status of women in public relations and proposes concrete ways to achieve greater parity in education and practice. The authors integrate the theoretical literature of public relations and gender with results of a major longitudinal study of women in the field, along with illuminating focus group and interview data. Topics covered include factors contributing to sex discrimination, how public relations stacks up against other professions on gender-related issues, challenges facing women managers and entrepreneurs, the experiences of ethnic minority professionals, the salary gap, the glass ceiling, and how to foster solutions on individual, organizational, and societal levels. This volume is an essential resource for public relations professionals, scholars, and educators. Students of public relations, mass communication, organizational sociology, management, and women's studies will find it an informative and accessible text.

Book Description
While for many years NMR spectroscopy was one of the most useful methods of analyzing smaller molecules, nowadays it is an indispensable tool in determining the structure of complex biomolecules too. One reason for this is not least the development of increasingly powerful appliances that enabled this complicated analysis using tiny amounts of the substances in the first place. Just as the image of a 2D spectrum allows an insight into the spatial structure of a molecule, the chronological examination of an NMR experiment enables the description of the molecular dynamics. It is only by explaining such characteristics that we can really come to understand the functioning of biomolecules.
This book is neither a purely analytical nor bioorganic work, and as such fills a gap for everybody working in determining the structure of carbohydrates and their conjugates. In a clearly comprehensible manner, the text summarizes the latest knowledge surrounding the use of NMR spectroscopy with such biologically important substance classes as polysaccharides, glycoproteins and glycolipides. Furthermore, it provides an insight into the interactions with other biomolecules such as proteins, nucleic acids or carbohydrates. A valuable guide for all glucochemists.

Fundamentals of Statistical and Thermal Physics (McGraw-Hill Series in Fundamentals of Physics)
ASIN: 0070386625 |
Book Description
This last volume of the Berkeley Physics Course is devoted to the study of large-scale systems consisting of many atoms or molecules:thus it provides an introduction to the subjects of statistical mechanics, kinetic theory, thermo- dynamics, and heat. The approach is not patterned upon the historical development of these subjects and does not pro- ceed along conventional lines. The aim has been to adopt a modern point of view and to show, in as systematic and simple way as possible, how the basic notions of atomic theory lead to a conceptual framework capable of describing and predicting the properties of macroscopic systems.
Customer Reviews:
great book, awful printing.......2003-07-14
This is probably the best introductory textbook on Statistical
Physics ever written. Unfortunately, this printing has the
quality of a photocopy of the original edition, and a bad
quality photocopy I should say.
Several pictures are completely blurred and the details are
impossible to see. It is really a shame that the publisher
McGraw-Hill charges such a high price (almost 90 dollars)
for this badly done photocopy of such a great book.
Book Description
It's autumn in Harmony, and Pastor Sam Gardner has vowed to be ready for Christmas. Determined to redeem a dreadful history of gift giving, Sam enrolls in a scrapbooking class to make a Christmas gift his wife will never forget. However, Sam's absence from their home every Wednesday night, coupled with his fishy alibi of attending a men's group, raises her suspicions.
Meanwhile, Sam struggles in the class and must attempt to complete his project with only the help of his faithful secretary, Frank. As Christmas fast approaches and rumors of Sam's Wednesday night absences swirl along with the snow, a series of mishaps leads to a Christmas no one will soon forget.
Customer Reviews:
Slightly Disappointing.......2007-07-01
Unlike the earlier Harmony stories, this one seems to work too hard; the usual flow is missing. Still a good read and fun to check in with our friends in Harmony.
Delightful Christmas story.......2007-01-15
Sam Gardner, pastor of the Harmony Friends Meeting, usually gets in trouble because of the pathetic Christmas gifts he gives his wife, Barbara, every year. This year he has a great idea and decides to make a scrapbook for his wife. He enrolls in a scrapbooking class and finds himself the only male there. The teacher soon discovers that he doesn't have many skills which can be used in scrapbooking and she makes his life miserable. Added to this, Barbara becomes suspicious that something is going on with Sam and he is not attending a men's meeting on Wednesdays as he has told her. Soon much of the town of Harmony is involved in Sam's subterfuge on some level. This book contains a lot of chuckles but also some insight into what makes for a perfect Christmas gift.
Another Happy Harmony Story.......2007-01-09
If you have read the Harmony books, here's one that you won't want to miss reading during the Christmas season (or anytime!). I just love how Gulley takes a simple town and an ordinary family story and adds such humorous twists and turns. Those of us who live in a small town can relate to the rumor mill and how easily stories are created and spread. Well, our lovable Quaker minister is the victim here. It's a very funny and heartwarming story, one that will bring you old fashion comfort - like drinking a cup of hot cocoa with Grandma's homemade afghan wrapped around you!
Hilarious!.......2007-01-07
Pastor Sam Gardner knows he's clueless about choosing Christmas gifts for his wife, Barbara. Even after 17 years together, he still winds up buying her potholders and suchlike. This year, though, Sam's determined things are going to be different. He enrolls (secretly, of course, to avoid spoiling the surprise!) in an adult education scrapbooking class, to make Barbara a gift she's sure to treasure.
Things go awry, to put it mildly, as Barbara tries to figure out where her husband is going so secretively every Wednesday evening. She moves from one mistaken conclusion to another, and before long the entire town of Harmony - a Norman Rockwell sort of community - is playing that old parlor game favorite, Gossip, with hilarious results.
Sentimental and cliched at times? Sure it is. But it's got one memorably original character in Sam's church secretary, Frank, an elderly and crusty war veteran. It's also got the Christmas spirit as it ought to be. Generally speaking, I hate cute. I hate sentimental. I hate inspirational. And I loved this story just the same!
The Christmas Scrapbook.......2007-01-05
I enjoyed the book very much and think anyone who scrapbooks would enjoy this good read. Thanks for recommending it to me.

Book Description
Based on the diary Marion Kelsey kept while in the Womenâs Land Army during World War II, Victory Harvest is a personal remembrance of wartime Britain through the eyes of a young Canadian. Financed by a cousin, Kelsey travelled to England to be with her soldier husband. She joined the Womenâs Land Army and spent the next four years planting crops, milking cows, and driving a tractor. Through Kelseyâs diary the reader discovers - as Kelsey did - that agricultural work was vital to the overall war effort in Britain. Kelseyâs observations range from descriptions of the bombing raids on civilian populations to more personal accounts of the difficulties of obtaining a bath. She and her husband were reunited on his quarterly leaves and Victory Harvest records their travels through much of England, Ireland, and Scotland amid air raids, bombings, and machine-gun fire, providing a unique travelogue of Britain in the 1940s. Kelseyâs tour of duty was cut short when her husband was seriously wounded by shrapnel at Falaise in 1944. Marion Kelseyâs indomitable character and enthusiasm shine through her writing and, as a woman and a Canadian, she provides a new perspective on the war.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book about a Real Land Girl.......2003-06-21
During the beginning of War-Time Britain young women were asked to join the Woman's Land Army so the men could fight. Marion Kelsey, a Canadian, who came to England to be near her husband answered the call and joined. This book by Ms. Kelsey tell her adventures as a Land Girl. This is a great book for anyone who would like to learn more about the changes of women's roles during the war.

Book Description
Courage, loyalty and devotion to duty in time of war, strife and emergency are qualities that Canadians have demonstrated throughout their history. The participation of women during such times extends back to the French and British colonial eras when, as civilians, they played an active role in the struggles leading up to Canadian nationhood. While there has been many contributions of bravery by women that are part of Canada's rich heritage, it is the story of women in uniform that is the focus of attention.
During Canada's early military history, it was in the nursing work that women exerted their greatest influence. The nursing tradition formed the basis for the first six decades of women's service with the armed forces of Canada. In 1901, the Canadian Nursing Service was created and responded Canada's involvement in the First World War, serving in hospitals in Britain, on the Western Front and elsewhere. The advent of the Second World War saw the role of women expanded beyond the traditional one of nursing and by 1942, all three armed services had established organizations for women. Though disbanded afterwards, the Korean War and the dawn of the Cold War era brought Canadian women into uniform once again. This time their organizations would endure.
The succeeding decades witness an increase in the number of military occupations open to women and the move towards full gender integration within the Canadian Armed Forces.
The year 2004 marks the 119th anniversary of the first response by Canadian women to their nation's call to service. The intervening years have seen triumph and tragedy, heroism and quiet duty, and the development of the tradition of service that is presented in this lavishly illustrated book.

What life and death were like during the "Great War".......2001-05-23
Clare Gass was a nurse with the rank of lieutenant, serving with the Canadian Army Medical Corps in France during World War I for four long years. She documented her daily experiences from her military training in 1915 to her return from Europe in 1918. She had a gift for recording the sights, sounds, and smells of war, and in addition to her nursing duties, found time to explore the countryside around the hospital and took photographs as well. Ardently recommended for students of twentieth century military history, medical history, women's history, and unique autobiographies, The War Diary Of Clare Gass, 1915-1918 offers a unique, eye-witness, "window through time" to what life and death were like during the "Great War" as seen through the eyes of a battlefield nurse.

Book Description
In these Red Cross memoirs, thirty women tell their stories of volunteer work with the Canadian Red Cross Corps in overseas postings during World War Two and the Korean War. These dramatic narratives take us across oceans infested with enemy submarines to witness Canadian women on duty in the U.K., in Europe and in Asia. Laced with humour and filled with grace, these stories are a testament to the vital yet often overlooked responsibilities that thousands of women gallantly accepted for the Allied war effort. Women Overseas is a companion volume to the national bestseller Blackouts to Bright Lights: Canadian War Bride Stories.

Memoirs present wartime experiences for a new generation.......2000-02-08
Frances Martin Day, Phyllis Spence, and Barbara Ladouceur, eds., Women Overseas: Memoirs of the Canadian Red Cross Corps (Overseas Detachment). Vancouver: Ronsdale Press, 1998. Women Overseas is a collection of memoirs of 31 women who volunteered to work with the Canadian Red Cross Corps overseas during the Second World War. Included here are also stories of Canadian Red Cross Corps personnel who served in the Korean War. The individual stories are based on recollections many years after the war, notes from diaries and letters, and archives of the Red Cross Overseas clubs of Victoria an Vancouver. As some of the contributors have since passed away, the book becomes a legacy many people who have veterans in their families wish they were able to have on paper. For example, we have the contribution of Audrey C. Kitching, who became the wife of Major-General George Kitching after returning home. The reader is presented with the lives of these volunteers in their various wartime phases: civilian life prior to joining the Red Cross; training in Canada and awaiting word to travel to Great Britain in the ocean-going convoys characteristic of wartime; descriptions of experiences in France or Italy, or in the case of the 1950-1953 war, in Korea. Even if a reader's first interest is the military history of the Second World War, this book offers much information about such topics as the build-up to D-Day in June, 1944 or the extent of civilian casualties in Normandy after the June-August, 1944 war, where an estimated 40,000 civilians were killed. From the memoirs there are narrations of incidents when the Red Cross staff would meet wounded soldiers being evacuated out of battle, with the mud of the battlefield, as one author describes, still permeating their clothing and boots. In such encounters, the women at the field hospitals expressed surprise at how much the soldiers felt a need to talk about their battle experiences and under what circumstances they became wounded. While other books provide more of a structured account of how the hospitals and evacuation routes were established, the reader does learn much from Women Overseas about the workings of General Hospitals, or the more forward field hospitals, and Casualty Clearing Stations. And much is presented about the workings of the Canadian Red Cross Overseas: the duties as ambulance drivers, escort officers, food administration, and handicrafts officers, working with such groups as blind veterans. The organization is described as finding much success in its work in Great Britain and on the continent in its work with soldiers and civilians, as well as in its liaison with its counterparts among the allies. Examples of the dangers of the work are also described in the memoirs. For example, in her account of "Sunny Italy wasn't warm or sunny", Dorothy Falkner Burogoyne Doolittle, from St. Catherine's, Ontario, describes what had happened to the No. 14 General Hospital that had been sent to Italy before her group. They were on a convoy that was bombed in the Mediterranean in early November, 1943. "No lives had been lost, but they had lost all their possessions, and word had got back to London that the Red Cross girls at No. 14 needed anything and everything." Women Overseas accomplishes much more than was perhaps intended as a record of personal accounts of the Canadian Red Cross Corps (Overseas Detachment). The reader is presented with a work that educates about Canadians in the Second World War through biographical narrations of women who were part of the support structure both for our soldiers and for civilians in such countries as Great Britain, France, Belgium, and Italy during the Second World War. As an important addition, so as not to neglect the Korean War, the addition of those memoirs are also most welcomed. Such a book offers great ideas for further research. On a personal note, Helen M. Egan's chapter, "We found the drivers very protective of us" mentions a reference to Jean Lamb, who "had already worked in Italy with the Canadian offensive which had pushed up from Sicily, but she had returned when the order came through that all married girls had to return to London." My father was a batman to a Captain Lamb in Italy, until the officer's death. Now I have something close to home to research. It is such little aspects of the vast and complicated story of Canadians in war that help a person continue with an interest to learn more and more.

Book Description
Focusing on idealists and visionaries who believed that Justice could reign in our world, this book explores the desire to experience utopia on earth. Reluctant to await another existence--another form, or eternal life following death and resurrection--individuals with ghuluww, or exaggeration, emerged at the advent of Islam, expecting to attain the apocalyptic horizon of Truth. In their minds, Muhammad's prophecy represented one such cosmic moment of transformation. Even in the early modern period, some denizens of Islamdom continued to hope for a utopia despite aborted promises and expectations. In a moment of enthusiasm, one group called the Qizilbash (Red Heads) took up arms at the turn of the sixteenth century to fight for Shaykh Isma'il Safavi, their divinely inspired leader. The Safavis succeeded in establishing an empire, but their revolutionary sensibilities were exposed to erasures and expulsion into the realms of heresy. The social settings in which such beliefs were performed in early modern Iran are highlighted in order to tease out the relationship between discourse and practice, narrating the ways in which a Persianate ethos uncovered new Islamic identities (Alid and Sufi). Mystics, Monarchs and Messiah explores these belief systems within a dialogue between Semitic, Indo-Iranian, and Hellenic cultures that continued to resist the monotheist impulse to delay the meeting of the holy with the human until the end of time.

In the Name of Iran.......2006-06-01
This book was fun to read because it was focused on Safavid Kings and how the Kings utilized cosmology in order to govern Iran. Moreover, this book covered Zoroastrian faith and how Zoroastrian faith shaped Iran's Shi'ite sect and culture. This is a great book.

Book Description
This book is about desertification. The author describes vegetation degradation as a part of the integral process of desert ecosystem degradation in Central Asia under the impact of human activities. A connection is made between political and social factors and degradation of desert environments in historical perspective. Fragile desert ecosystems suffer first of all from the loss of vegetation. Wildlife is reduced, productivity of desert rangelands fall and the people also suffer from a shortage of food. The after-effect of this process is catastrophic, not only for the desert itself but also for the people living in the desert. Several measures are also discussed in the book for conservation of desert vegetation and rehabilitation of desert lands.
