      Book Description

The strictly mathematical foundation of conventional economic theories has resulted in circumscribed analyses of world economic history. Larry Allen's groundbreaking The Global Economic System since 1945, in contrast, re-evaluates world economic history in a context that recognizes and avoids the inherent limitations of mathematical models.

The Global Economic System since 1945 does not shun economic theory, but rather uses it as a tool to reassess recent world economic history. Allen describes how, starting at the end of World War Two, powerful corporations lobbied governments in an effort to reduce the perceived constraints of regulation. In the past twenty-five years these voices have grown increasingly influential, as governments worldwide adopted free-market policies, reduced economic regulation, and promoted the virtues of free-market capitalism.

The Global Economic System since 1945 presents a fresh and wide-ranging synthesis of economic history and theory that will be valuable to both scholars and curious participants in today's global economy.

                Book Description

In the first book on the geology of Venus to incorporate findings from the Magellan spacecraft's four-year mapping mission, Peter Cattermole introduces the reader to the strange world of Venusian landscapes--some reassuringly familiar, others spectacularly non-Earthlike, and all produced by geological processes of intriguing differences and parallels to those of Earth. Cattermole presents the latest research on Venusian plate tectonics, volcanoes, hot spots, cold spots, mountain belts, fracture zones, winds, erosion, craters, and lithosphere structure.

With nearly 150 detailed maps and dramatic, high-resolution images, some in full color, Venus: A New Geology presents state-of-the-art information in a stunning visual format. While many of the topics regarding Venusian geography remain controversial, Cattermole offers an unbiased presentation that makes clear which recent data may be subject to reinterpretation in the future. This is the definitive book on a subject of interest to scientist and nonscientist alike.

                    Oh, Brother!

I'm watching my brother swagger through our New York City apartment...smiling. Rhys, the detached, surly man who turned brooding into an art form. But he's not brooding now. No, he's practically threatening to pistol whip me for shaking hands with the beautiful, half-dressed creature named Jane who just tried to sneak out of his bedroom. Weird. Brother Grim has a sex drive?

That's not all that has me freaked out. Something terrible happened last night, something that made Rhys break his own rule and save the life of a mortal. Trouble is he doesn't remember anything from the past two hundred years. Like that he's a vampire, not a Regency viscount with an English accent.

All I know is this mortal woman has managed to touch my brother's frozen heart, and I, Sebastian Young, will do whatever it takes to help him keep her...

                    5 out of 5 stars Dark & Dirty.......2007-08-07

This is truly a supernatural romance novel. Sometimes the romance is greater than the supernatural or visa-versa. This book is a lovely blend of both. Our story revolves around a new New Yorker, Jane, who meets a vampire, Rhy, while being assaulted by some jerk outside a bar. Rhy has two brothers who are both vampires as well. The story revolves around Rhy's love for Jane and his deep seeded issues with being a vampire. I found this story gripping and heart wrenching at times. You will want to know what happens with Jane and Rhy as soon as you pick up this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not that great.......2007-04-21

I read Christian's story first, really liked it, and was looking forward to the other books in the series. I'm in the middle of this one, and honestly, I'm not sure I can finish it. The heroine is so insipid--yes, she wants sex; no, she doesn't want sex. She melts at his kiss, repeatedly jumps into his bed, "does the nasty," but then claims they shouldn't do it again. Ugh. I want to shake her, "Make up your mind!" If I were Rhys, I'd dump her. And the amnesia thing is getting old real fast. I'd like to read Sebastian's story, but after this, I'm not so sure. From the reviews, it sounds like it may be another schizo, wimpy heroine.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Excellent!.......2006-12-20

Kathy Love immediately drew me in with the intriguing characters of Rhys and Jane (what brought them to the bar in the first place). Then, why was Rhys' brother, Christian, so miffed with him that he wanted to kill him? Nothing gets told right away (exactly what happened with Rhys and the woman Christian thought he loved?), but just enough to keep me interested. The characters had depth and were actually believable (vampires, believable?) -- and likable. Rhys' other brother, Sebastian, was hilarious with all the stunts he pulled on the amnesiac Rhys (a vampire with amnesia who forgets he's a vampire?).

The love scenes were mesmerizing. I've read several romances and the love scenes got to the point where they were tedious; I thought I'd become jaded. Kathy Love's love scenes were highly original and I read with bated breath. When I thought she couldn't possibly throw in another love scenario, she did. Personally, I like the bathtub scene the best.

A great book to read when you have enough time set aside. Don't expect to be able to easily set it aside and get back to it. I made the mistake of starting to read this book at night. I had a hard time putting it down as it's such a page-turner. Needless to say, I lost a lot of sleep.

This was the best vampire romance book I've read so far as it had wonderful characters, plot and suspense. I will definitely be purchasing more of Kathy Love's books.

                    3 out of 5 stars All right....but less fangy then I hoped.......2006-08-08

Maybe its just because I've been spoiled reading Charlaine Harris, Kim Harrison, and MJD but I found this book a little lacking in the suspense, action, and angst. The relationship development between Jane and Rhys left me satisfied and the love scenes were brilliant but it didn't FEEL surprising to me. I thought about purchasing the next in the series, especially because its about Christian who ends up being the semi-bad guy in this book but after a few minutes worth of deliberation I realized I need less NORMAL in my PARANORMAL romances.

5 out of 5 stars Brothers are a favorite of mine........2006-08-07

Fun read Kathy. I can identify with Rhys, but I love Sebastian. You had me laughing at inapproriate times in the middle of the night! Learned a thing or two about the undead (I'm new to vamp books) - and lost my heart to true love!
Can't wait to read the rest of the brothers' stories.

As hard as I tried I just could not get into this book. Our heroine Cheopatra is not the brightest crayon in the box. And Michael is a most disappointing hero.

Michael is a campanion (regular food source of blood for a vampire)not a slave but always on call. A vampire can have several campanion's and it doesnt have to be sexual unless both agree. Cleopatra is a vampire (very rare for a female to be made) and her sire kept her ignorent of the fact that there are campaion's and a vampire society etc....that when it stops being interesting.

This books has no stucture. Things seem to to added because you find that as it goes along it isnt making sense the author must realize this to and trys to cover it by suddenly bringing in an explanation out of the blue. Instead of deveoping all of this, alot of time is spent on the sex. Now I love a good sex scene that's why I buy these books, but not at the expense of what could be a good story, its just not enough.

5 out of 5 stars Cricket Starr never disappoints!.......2006-02-26

Former 1930's Hollywood actress, vampire Cleopatra Lutz is at a crossroads in her life. She has grown tired of trying to find her next meal, as well as from hiding from the paranormal society that is hunting her kind. Cleo comes across Michael Brown, a newly released nightwalker companion, and he offers her his services, both in bed and out. In bed as her lover, out of bed as her regular blood source. She takes him up on his offer to become her lover, but didn't realize that, once their sexual encounter was complete, she did not completely remove her fang marks from a very sexy part of Michael's lower body. Hence, he is now her nightwalker companion, whether she wants him to be or not. Now she must place her mark in the correct spot, on his neck, for all to see.

Michael Brown has been a nightwalker companion most of his life. Newly released from his companion bond because his nightwalker found a mate, he is anxious to show Cleo how close nightwalker and companion can become. However, Michael has two big problems: Cleo doesn't trust him and the paranormal society is trying their best to find her. In order to win her over, Michael kidnaps Cleo, locking her in an old movie studio where he and his friends try to get her to remember and recapture her movie star life prior to becoming a nightwalker. Alas, the paranormal society finds her, then things really begin to heat up!

All in all, Fangs for the Memories, was a cute book. Even though Cleo was an extremely stubborn vampire, I found myself sympathizing with her. Her heart had been broken and she was scared to love again. As for Michael, I can only wish for a man such as he to see to my total comfort and needs. Sigh. Fangs for the Memories was enjoyable, as are all of the other Cricket Starr books I have read. I am happy to say that she continues to be an automatic read for me.

Although this book is heavy on pre-colonization tribes, it also has information from then to the present. In the center is an incredible map of all the tribes. Great for someone like me trying to narrow down possible tribal affiliation of ancestors.

In Eyewitness to Science John Carey has assembled more than 100 pieces of science writing into a kaleidoscopic tour of the field. As befits Carey's status as professor of English at Oxford University, some of the most interesting juxtapositions are between great scientists and great writers. For instance, J. B. Lamarck on "How the Giraffe Got Its Neck" is grouped with George Bernard Shaw's preface to Back to Methuselah and with a poem by U.S. poet laureate Richard Wilbur. Some of the more literary excerpts include John Updike on entropy, George Orwell on toads, and John Steinbeck on sea cucumbers.

                                Book Description

Plotting the development of modern science from Leonardo da Vinci to Chaos Theory, John Carey chooses accounts by scientists themselves that are both elegant and arrestingly written. The classic science-writers are here: Darwin, Huxley, Fabre. So, too, are the luminaries of the late-twentieth-century genre of popular science-writing which, Carey argues, challenges contemporary poetry and fiction in its imaginative power.

John Carey's Eyewitness to Science is identical to The Faber Book of Science except for the cover and weight of the paper stock used. Since the latter is now out of print, those of you who have missed the opportunity to read this delightfully eclectic anthology of science writing may wish to consult this edition before it, too, goes out of print.

5 out of 5 stars A choppy book about great connections in the web of nature.......1998-03-09

As a geologist, I read the samples that seemed relevant first, and found many surprising and wonderful things like Huxley's geology of Europe derived partly from careful observations of a piece of chalk. I went on to read biology, physics, poetry and abnormal sex. I am teaching a freshman literature class this winter quarter and managed to lighten up Conrad's gloomy brooding view that we evolved from soulless animals by reading Cumming's (Pg 262) retort; "As for me, I am proud of my close kinship with other animals. I take jealous pride in my Simian ancestry. I like to think that I was once a magnificent hairy fellow living in the trees and that my frame has come down through geological time via sea jelly and worms and Amphioxus, Fish, Dinosaurs, and Apes. Who would exchange these for the pallid couple in the Garden of Eden?"
