Book Description
Bad Jobs is an anthology of talesboth humorous and tragicabout the worst jobs people have ever held.
This collection of stories, comics, and photographs depict, in gory true-life detail, examples of bad jobs. We all shudder at the thought of our own worst jobs-waiter, cashier, parking lot attendant-but these take the cake, demonstrating just how bad bad jobs can be.
Bad Jobs is full of wry, subversive tales, comics, and assorted miscellany from the trenches of the working world. You think your job is bad? Meet:
The flyer delivery guy who sees poetry in broken glassfrom a beer bottle some kids threw at him. The phone sex operator who can bring a man to orgasm while reading Ms. Magazine. A customer service rep who only hates two things about her job: the customers and everything else. A one-time stripper who performs her first- and last-mainstage routine to Aretha Franklin's R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
The sex-shop clerk who, when confronted by a deaf-mute demanding a dollar, makes sure he can read her lips mouthing, "Fuck you. Get a job!" The factory grunt who knows firsthand what really goes into "Crushed Party Ice." The fabric wholesaler whose coworker insists he never raped a woman who didn't love it. The applicant whose interviewers end up breathing real hard through their noses, until she points out that half of their interview questions are illegal. An environmental canvasser who turns up in the local paper's "Crimewatch" column-and considers turning himself in for the reward money.
By turns beautiful, surreal, hilarious, and awful, Bad Jobs will get under your skin with stories about how really awful a truly bad job can be.
Customer Reviews:
Not one of my favorite 'real-world' books..........2002-12-09
Some of the employment horror stories are funny but several chapters were quite honestly, vulgar. This book is loaded with graphic, sexual content and strong language. When reading the chapters I felt that some of the supposed "real-life experiences" were exaggerated or even fabricated. I have heard better "on-the-job-horror-stories" from my co-workers than what I read in this book.
A Vital New Literary Form.......1999-04-19
This is a very cool collection of stories, comics, and photographs depict, in gory true-life detail, examples of bad jobs. Included is the tale of a phone sex operator who routinely brings men to orgasm while reading Ms Magazine, the stripper who performs her first-and last-routine to Aretha Franklin's "R-E-S-P-E-C-T", and the factory worker who knows firsthand what goes into "Crushed Party Ice." Truth is alternately more irritating and stranger that fiction as with the story of the applicant whose interviewers end up breathing real hard through their noses, until she points out that half of their interview questions are illegal or an environmental canvasser who turns up in the local paper's "Crimewatch" column - and considers turning himself in for the reward money. By turns beautiful, surreal, hilarious, and awful, BAD JOBS brings together a plurality to the aesthetic responses to each author's 'true stories' just as some forms of badness require different remedies. The stories in this collection mix subversive laughter at absurdity with the sadness, frustrations and failed hopes that makeup many workplace experience. Perhaps best of all Bad Jobs is a vital and welcomed new model for complaint and renewal in storytelling from the rare perspective of the bottom up.
Book Description
The reach of the car today is almost universal, and its effect on landscapes, cityscapes, cultures – indeed, on the very fabric of the modern world – is profound. Cars have brought benefits to individuals in terms of mobility and expanded horizons, but the cost has been very high in terms of damage to the environment and the consumption of precious resources. Despite the growing belief that a Faustian price is now being paid for the freedom cars have bestowed on us, we are none the less manufacturing them in ever greater numbers. Autopia is the first book to explore the culture of the motor car in the widest possible sense. Featuring newly commissioned essays by writers, critics, historians, artists and film-makers, as well as reprinting key texts, it examines the effect of the car throughout the world, including the USA, Western and Eastern Europe, Japan, China, Cuba, India and South Africa. In this book the car is treated neither as a technological fetish object nor as an instrument of danger. Instead, it is examined as a hugely important determinant of 20th-century culture, neither wholly good nor an unmitigated disaster, and certainly endlessly fascinating.Contributors include Michael Bracewell, Ziauddin Sardar, Al Rees, Martin Pawley, Donald Richie and Peter Hamilton. Key texts by Marshall Berman, Jane Jacobs, Roland Barthes, Marc Augé and others.

Edward Lasker's Magnum Opus!.......2007-04-05
In this, his magnum opus, Edward Lasker (1885-1981) allows us to experience a bygone era. "I must admit," he confesses, "that chess has been directly or indirectly the source of much happiness to me, and I should probably be grateful for this to my great namesake, Emanuel Lasker. Had he not won the World Championship when I was a little boy of five, my father would hardly have thought of teaching me the game." Later on, the two Laskers would become close friends.
How does one review a book like this? I can tell you that it is a thick book (428 pages). I can tell you that it was published in 1951. I can tell you that it has 32 drawings of the great and not so great masters (Pillsbury, von Bardeleben, Tarrasch, Bernstein, Nimzovich, just to name a few) by Kenneth Stubbs. I can tell you that there are 77 annotated games in descriptive notation. I can tell you it is a fascinating autobiography, but how do I convey the essence of this book? Certainly not by sterile statistics!
What follows is meant to whet your appetite. Hopefully, I will succeed. These excerpts are suggestive, by no means are they complete. Let's begin with Kurt von Bardeleben: "One master on whose presence at the Cafe Bauer I could unfailingly count any evening, was Kurt von Bardeleben. He was an easy-going person, in his fifties. When he had any money at all, you could tell it by the bottle of Bordeaux on his table; he sipped one glass after another in the leisurely manner of the connoisseur." What was extraordinary about the shape of von Bardeleben's forehead? Why did his aristocratic family cast him off? These questions and more are answered by Lasker. Of his namesake, Emanuel Lasker, Edward makes the following observation: "The striking difference between him and the other masters was that he hardly ever spent any time at the chessboard...He seemed always preoccupied with problems of mathematics or philosophy." Why, Edward asks, did Emanuel Lasker draw up a document in which he confirmed that "[Ossip] Bernstein had irrefutably proved his status as chess idiot"? Finally, let's conclude with Edward Lasker's comments on Aaron Nimzovich: "There was a bizarre streak in Nimzovich's make-up, which manifested itself not only in his exotic behavior but in his writings as well. In the last analysis, this probably explains why he was unable to keep up with Alekhine and Capablanca, both of whom coupled a strong practical sense with their fine positional understanding. This practical sense Nimzovich lacked. He also lacked physical endurance." During the Hamburg Hauptturnier tournament, 1910, Lasker discussed his forthcoming book, "Principles of Chess Strategy," with Nimzovich. "Though he complimented me on all I had done towards systematizing the knowledge every chess student needed...Nimzovich explained with good-natured irony that a master had to understand much more. And after he had shown me some of his new ideas which he proposed to publish in book form under the title 'My System,' I thoroughly appreciated the gap which still separated me from his class. Among the bizarre things he said...." Well, you really need to read this book to find out what Nimzovich had to say!
How strong a player was Edward Lasker? Good enough to score 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 in a match with Frank Marshall for the U.S. Championship in 1923. The annotated games are an integral part of Lasker's autobiography, but, if it is instruction that you are looking for, then I would suggest you look elsewhere. (The lessons are there to be learned, but they are scattered throughout Lasker's autobiography.)
For fifty years, and some seven hundred chess books later, this sensitive, insightful book has remained one of my favorites. If chess nostalgia is your cup-of-tea, then you will love this book.

One Great Piece Of Chess Literature.......2006-09-15
This is one magnificent chess book. Reminds me of some of the characters I remember when playing chess in my younger days. Lasker skillfully recounts his memories of famous and lesser known chess players of his period. Also contains game selection by those same players! A hard book to find, but worth the search!!
Everything wonderful in a chess book.......2006-02-11
I must affirm Mr. Bervaldi's review; this is a brilliant chess book, that is equal parts history, great annotated games, and entertainment. All of Edward Lasker's books together make an entire chess library.

Book Description
Digital evidence--evidence that is stored on or transmitted by computers--can play a major role in a wide range of crimes, including homicide, rape, abduction, child abuse, solicitation of minors, child pornography, stalking, harassment, fraud, theft, drug trafficking, computer intrusions, espionage, and terrorism.
Though an increasing number of criminals are using computers and computer networks, few investigators are well-versed in the evidentiary, technical, and legal issues related to digital evidence. As a result, digital evidence is often overlooked,
collected incorrectly, and analyzed ineffectively. The aim of this hands-on resource is to educate students and professionals in the law enforcement, forensic science, computer security, and legal communities about digital evidence and computer crime.
This work explains how computers and networks function, how they can be involved in crimes, and how they can be used as a source of evidence. As well as gaining a practical understanding of how computers and networks function and how they can be used as evidence of a crime, readers will learn about relevant legal issues and will be introduced to deductive criminal profiling, a systematic approach to focusing an investigation and understanding criminal motivations.
Readers will receive access to the author's accompanying Web site which contains simulated cases that integrate many of the topics covered in the text. Frequently updated, these cases teaching individuals about:
* Components of computer networks
* Use of computer networks in an investigation
* Abuse of computer networks
* Privacy and security issues on computer networks
* The law as it applies to computer networks
* Provides a thorough explanation of how computers and networks function, how they can be involved in crimes, and how they can be used as a source of evidence
* Offers readers information about relevant legal issues
* Features coverage of the abuse of computer networks and privacy and security issues on computer networks
* Free unlimited access to author's Web site which includes numerous and frequently updated case examples
Customer Reviews:
Very complete book........2006-11-10
It describe all aspects about digital crimes using a clear language. It's very good for neubies.
Excellent book from a real expert.......2003-09-03
This is an excellent book from a real expert.
Everyone and their brother are writing books about computer security and digital forensics.
The difference here is that Eoghan Casey knows what he is talking about.
Excellent book!
The book of digital crime.......2002-01-14
If you are new to this world this is where you should begin. Digital Evidence contains all the knowledge one could amass by obtaining PHD in computing. Especially when you don't have time for a Diploma. I have bought 5 books pertain to digital crime from USA and UK. But this is the one and only book I am recommending to any one in any continent who want to learn or new to this arena. All the other books in this field for Attorneys or with similar requirements are some what academic and may be boring. The CD-ROM accompanying the book gives you much needed hands on training, otherwise which will cost you at least US $ 4000, if you are to go to a training centre to do the same.
Best computer forensic book available.......2001-06-28
Sometimes, defense attorneys have it easy: one slip-up by the prosecution and evidence is thrown out. Knowing that, law enforcement goes to great lengths to ensure that evidence is appropriately collected and protected. That works well in the physical world, where law enforcement has many generations' worth of experience. But in the modern world of computers and digital networks, where the simple act of rebooting a computer is enough to wipe out large amounts of evidence, law enforcement clearly needs thorough guidance.
Such a resource is here: Digital Evidence and Computer Crime, an excellent book that details the elements of digital crime. Author Eoghan Casey does a superb job of applying forensic science to computers. The information presented here is critical to a diverse audience: law enforcement, attorneys, forensic scientists, and systems administrators, for instance.
While cybercrime law is in some ways similar to other aspects of criminal law, it nonetheless has its own language and categories. For instance, jurisdiction is a key element in both the physical and digital realms, but it is a much trickier concept in the latter. Casey develops this topic and many more. Those new to computers and networks need not worry: the book begins with an explanation of how they function. With the basics out of the way, Casey details how computers can be used in crime and how the evidence created from these activities can be used for later analysis....The accompanying CD-ROM contains simulated cases that integrate many of the topics covered in the text. In all, the book and CD are an excellent introduction to an increasingly important area of law enforcement.
University Text Book.......2001-06-09
This text was used for the digital evidence and computer crime class that I just completed. The book is clear and easy to understand. It goes into detail only when needed. I was concerned that this information would quickly become out of date, but the ideas presented are current and provide a solid background for understanding any newer technologies that come down the road. I usually sell my books after the semester ends, but I have decided to keep this one.

Book Description
This totally original architecture bookthe first comprehensive work on brick, the essential building materialranges over every culture throughout history. It follows the story of brick from 5,000 BC to the twenty-first century, from the vast baths and basilicas of ancient Rome, through the wonders of Gothic brick in Germany, Buddhist shrines in Burma, and Mughal mosques in Iran, to the modern revival of brick in the hands of architects like Gaudí.
Marvelously illustrated with specially taken photographs, the book is at once an historical account of how bricks have been employed by architects of every period, a technical survey of brickmaking and bricklaying, and an essay in architectural and cultural history. More than one hundred themes are covered, from bricks in ancient Egypt to their distinctive use by Louis Kahn, Alvar Aalto, and Renzo Piano. Works of engineeringrailway tunnels, viaducts, dams, and bridgesare given prominence alongside the great cathedrals and country houses, castles and temples, testifying to the versatility and importance of brick and brickwork.
An illustrated glossary explains all technical terms and the various construction and bonding methods in use. The book will prove indispensable to anyone professionally involved in, studying, or simply interested in architecture, design, and materials. Over 600 illustrations, 570 in color.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2006-01-17
Purchased this for my father's, who is a retired brick mason, 67th birthday. The quality of the book, pictures, and writing are all excellent. Upon receiving it, my father immediately began reading and studying the book which is a real testament to its ability to capture and maintain ones interest.
Surprising Brick.......2005-03-05
A powerful and original book. Wonderfully rich and beautiful photographs accompany a lucid text.
A must have.......2004-11-09
This is, simply, an outstanding book. While Campbell delivers in taking an unlikely subject (brick? who would have thought?) and making it interesting to the general reader, the real draw of this book is its breathtaking photographs. Suffused with light, stunning in composition, masterful in perspective they practically glow as one turns the page. Will Pryce is clearly one to watch. This is a book that will delight general audiences and architectural historians alike. Buy it!
Particularly nice book design and photography.......2004-05-18
The author writes easily, seems to know everything, and has a completely unpretentious style. He also chose his subjects well, with many less-well-known examples and only a few icons. As a historian, he occasionaly suffers from their tendency to document, say, the names and ruling periods of the Middle Ages Persian kings before getting to the interesting parts about the use of brick in that era. The photographs are all similar to the one on the cover--deep colors and bright sunlight--and their consistency adds a nice touch. The organization of the book was good too, presenting the subject in manageable bites.
Great pictures, great text, a truly beautiful book.......2004-01-01
After reading favourable reviews by architectural critics, I was pleased to find that this book exceeded my expectations. The book is an authoritative history of the use of world's oldest building material. Despite its massive size, it is easy to read and covers a lot of ground, from the origins of the brick in mud-bricks in the Near East to the modern day. The clearly written text is complemented by sumptuous colour photographs. For these reasons, it stands out.
This book certainly opened my eyes to the variety of buildings in which brick has been used and introduced many that I would like to visit myself. It makes you look at the world in a whole new way. It not only covers the shows the wide range of design possibilities but also the practical aspects of building in brick. For the serious student, there is an illustrated glossary at the end. A fascinating book for both students and laymen alike.

Bricklaying
ASIN: 081223782X |
Book Description
For more than 10,000 years, people have been shaping clay into brick for use in creating permanent shelter. With increased skill, they used brick to form arches and gateways in complex buildings of different sizes and shapes. Eventually bricks were used to decorate walls and floors, and what had once been a strictly utilitarian item began to take on an aesthetic role.
Current attention to architectural ceramics, the interest in installations, and the advance of public art have transformed brick into an increasingly popular medium. Artists now collaborate with brick factories to produce a wide range of work utilizing the unique properties of brick. Some of them carve the clay while it is green and then fire it; others use already fired bricks to produce their art.
In Brickworks, Gwen Heeney shows the amazing creations of an international group of artists who work with brick and also gives practical information about getting commissions, working with brick factories and designing with bricks. In addition she offers insight into the technicalities involved in producing brick artworks. She covers the process from the initial pile of raw bricks, through design, the making of the piece, dismantling, firing, and reconstructing in situ.
Illustrated with images that will both enlighten and engage artists, architects, and those involved in public art, Brickworks is the complete guide for anyone wanting to work creatively with this medium.

Fantastic Creative Source.......2006-03-18
I own hundreds of books on ceramic design, instruction, etc. This book seems to end up in my hands on a regular basis when I want to read something just to enjoy the creativity of other artists. It is well written, the pictures are fantastic, and it is full of inspiration. If you have any interest in clay, brickwork, etc, this book is a must buy!

Customer Reviews:
Practical advice aimed at students.......2004-07-24
The illustrations and the book design are very up-to-date. The text is from several authors, so some advice is occasionally repeated. Repetitio est mater studiorum, as they say.
There's detailed instructions on simple walls, layout advice for maintaining the bond around openings, coverage of advanced topics like arches and corbelling, and background topics such as brick manufacture. All in metric and referenced to British building codes by the way.
