Book Description
The papers published in this volume are based on an IMF seminar held in 1998 covering a broad range of topics dealing with monetary and financial law. Topics presented at the seminar focused on the liberalization of capital movements, data dissemination, the IMF's goals in financial surveillance and architecture, and responses to the financial crises in Asia and Latin America. Recent issues in the financial sector were addressed including the supervision of banks and the major international effortthe Basle Core Principles of Banking Supervision. Updates on insolvency and liquidation of banks as well as lender-of-last-resort issues were presented along with how payment systems are adjusting to continuous financial modernization and the resulting legal issues. The activities of the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) were discussed from several viewpoints as was the issue of good governance. Information was also provided on the developments in the enforcement of bank claims and the law of security.
Book Description
To be labeled "of ill repute" in medieval society implied that a person had committed a violation of accepted standards and had stepped beyond the bounds of permissible behavior. To have a reputation "of good repute", however, was so powerful as to help a person accused of a crime be acquitted by his or her fellow peers. Labeling a person in medieval times was a complex matter. Often, unwritten codes of behavior determined who was of good repute and who was not. Members of the nobility committing a "fur-collar crime" might have considerable leeway to oppress their neighbors with violence and legal violations; however, a woman caught without appropriate attire and without the proper escort hazarded the label of a "woman of ill repute." Gender, class, social statutes, wealth, connections, bribes, friends, and the community all played a role in how quickly or how permanently a person's reputation was damaged. 'Of Good and Ill Repute' examines the complex social regulations and stigmatizations that medieval society used to arrive at its decisions about condemnation and exoneration. In eleven interrelated essays, including three previously unpublished works, Hanawalt explores how social control was maintained in Medieval England in the later Middle Ages. Focusing on gender, criminal behavior, law enforcement, arbitration, and cultural rituals of inclusion and exclusion, 'Of Good and Ill Repute' reflects the most current scholarship on medieval legal history, cultural history, and gender studies. It looks at the medieval sermons, advice books, manuals of penance, popular poetry, laws, legal treatises, court records, and city and guild ordinances that drew the lines between good and bad behavior. Written in a lively, accessible, and jargon-free style, this text is essential for upper level undergraduate history courses on medieval history and women's history as well as for English courses on medieval literature.

Book Description
Since their first description in 1875, Merkel cells have remained an elusive cell type. Their origin as well as their classification as mechanoreceptors have been a matter of controversy and intense discussion. The peptidergic granules in these cells are suggestive of neuroendocrine functions, but their discovery has raised additional questions regarding Merkel cell function.
Essential aspects of structure, development and function of normal Merkel cells and Merkel cell carcinoma are presented in short chapters, providing concise and up-to date information on this fascinating cell type.

Book Description
This book was conceived during the workshop "Emission of Chemical Species and Aerosols into the Atmosphere" which took place in Paris in June 2001, involving many experts who presented a number of state-of-the-art papers. Many of these papers are presented in this book where they are set in the wider context of other published work, providing comprehensive documentation of many aspects of this field of Earth science.
The book is divided into 12 chapters, most dealing with inventories of emissions related to anthropogenic emissions or biomass burning, emissions from vegetation and soils, emissions of mineral and sea-salt aerosols, and emissions of sulphur compounds from the oceans. The final three chapters show how atmospheric observations have been used to improve our knowledge of emissions, such as the use of isotopes, large observation networks as well as the latest inverse modelling techniques and their application to surface and satellite observations.

Book Description
Knowledge of the excitation characteristics of matter is decisive for the descriptions of a variety of dynamical processes, which are of significant technological interest. E.g. transport properties and the optical response are controlled by the excitation spectrum.
This self-contained work is a coherent presentation of the quantum theory of correlated few-particle excitations in electronic systems. It begins with a compact resume of the quantum mechanics of single particle excitations. Particular emphasis is put on Green function methods, which offer a natural tool to unravel the relations between the physics of small and large electronic systems. The book contains explicit expressions for the Coulomb Green function of two charge particles and a generalization to three-body systems. Techniques for the many-body Green function of finite systems are introduced and some explicit calculations of the Green functions are given. Concrete examples are provided and the theories are contrasted with experimental data, when available.
The second volume presents an up-to-date selection of applications of the developed concepts and a comparison with available experiments is made.

Customer Reviews:
My 14 month old LOVES to be read this book!.......2007-09-15
I have to disagree with those who said this is not a good children's book. We were given this book as a gift by my aunt who loves cows and has no idea who Terry Pratchett is. She was rather surprised by the book but sent it anyway. I have read some of Pratchett's other books so I knew more of what I was in for when I read it to my daughter, who now insists on hearing it several times a day. She loves the pictures, they are detailed and cartoony at the same time. And she loves all the different animal noises and voices as long as they are read with enthusiasm. I think children love being read to by the adults that love them regardless of the story, and wouldn't you rather read your kids a book you enjoy too? One of my favorite things is hearing how different people read the story, like my mother-in-law. I wish I could find more books like it.
Not what you're looking for in a children's book..........2007-07-25
While I love Terry Pratchett's witty satire in his DiscWorld books, I think he is out of his element in this "children's book". I have a two year old daughter, who like most children her age has a limited attention span. I was looking for something similar to the simple straight-forward version in Thud, something maybe 10-20 pages long (if that) that kind of went through different animals and maybe a dragon or a wizard and finally a cow, so that the young reader can shout "that's my cow!"
What you get is an increasingly convoluted plot that tells the story of Vimes reading to his kid. The illustration is an obviously computer-generated mish mash of busy images which do nothing to enhance the story. So instead of becoming a household name in children's books like your Maurice Sendak's or Dr. Seusses, Pratchett appears to be a money-hungry author looking to capitalize on some cross-merchandising, which he has done before with all the companion books to the DiscWorld.
It seems to me a case of too many people involved in this project, and none of them stopped the process and said, "I think we're trying to do too much with this. Let's remember who our target audience is."
But Pratchett is one of my favorite authors, and I eagerly look forward to his next work of ADULT fantasy.
Pratchett.......2007-06-14
What can I say, it is Terry Pratchett. As with all things written or produced by this strange man: It is outstanding.
If you know Pratchett, you NEED this book.......2007-06-01
So we're in the bookstore, and my husband says "You have to read this book... right now." And then he hands me a large flatboard picture book called "Where's My Cow?" I am baffled. I'm even further baffled when I see "by Terry Pratchett".
We're both huge Pratchett fans... but of course, I've never seen him write a picture book before. I am intrigued. I open it up.
I am laughing from the first page. The laughs get harder and harder as I progress. By the time I get to -- well, a certain city ruler, I have to sit down on the floor of the bookstore because I'm laughing too hard to stand up.
What an absolute treasure. In addition to being the funniest thing I've ever read, it's a fantastic children's book that rings true for any parent. My son loved it, and being ten, of course he's not read Pratchett... yet. We're starting him with Guards! Guards! this summer.
Needless to say, we purchased the book right then, and we're ordering more copies for friends. My only qualm is that I know some people who aren't versed in Pratchett, and will therefore not get it. I'm pushing them to start reading now in preparation for "Where's My Cow?"
Terry Pratchett, you are the MAN.
I Love It!.......2007-05-14
I am a big fan of the Discworld series. Now I can share it with my kids! Yay!
