This is by far the best mutual fund investment guide on the market today. It's packed with timely information on choosing funds, and includes complete profiles on 100 of the year's top stock and bond funds, based on various rankings. The book is well-written and easy to read, even for absolute beginners. I highly recommend it.

For self study.......2007-05-01

I purchased this book for self-study of the finite element method. I had a natural vibrations problem of a curved-beam under rotation (for a wind turbine) and I had no experience in finite elements so I looked at several texts (Bathe, Huebner, Zienkiewicz). For many reasons I picked this book. It was very easy to read, and the organization was amenable to my learning style. The author provides information at just the right moment when you need it, such as different numerical methods for solving these problems. And when you need further details, the reference list is right there for you. His description of the overall formulations, such as variational methods, are very clear and simple, especially if you have been trying to understand these by looking at other texts. And then he segues very well into the application with the finite elements.

The first topic I looked at in this book was the derivation of the space frame element, which was exactly what I needed for my vibrations problem. This derivation was in the middle of the text and I was able to understand the development without having to review previous sections. The programs are also very handy, even if they are written in old FORTRAN. I will definitely look at Rao's other books in the future.

This book is not well organised.......2001-08-23

The book is not well organise, and cotains a lot of mistakes. For example, in Chapter 5, the author starts with membrane plate element, switch to 3D solid mechanics, come back to plate bending element again, and finally go on to talk about free vibration problem in rod! Trying to figure out the motivation of each chapter is a pain in the neck.

An excellent text book.......2000-01-29

This book by Dr. S.S. Rao has many COMPLETE programs, a significant departure from all those books which tell you the easy part of the program and leave the rest as an "exercise for the reader". The references provided at the end of each chapter are alone worth the price of this book.

NICE.......2007-09-27

This book is about five women who form a book club. It was soft, easy, and comfortable. Unfortunately, my pillow shares these same qualities, and like my pillow, I just have to think about this book and I start to yawn. I can understand how some people (women) might like this book and generously grant it five stars, although for me it was just - nice. In my opinion, it was worthy of 2.5 stars, but I gave it three because hey, I wanted to be nice too.

Not only was it so nice that it bordered boring, I've never read anything so well contrived. The characters were so obviously planned; they never let you forget that they were fictional. What's more, Laura Landvik must have had an extensive check list of issues that she felt must make an appearance in the story, it would have been fine with me had she cut the list in half and really concentrated on how a few of these issues have been addressed over the years. Instead, she touched so briefly on so many issues like: alcoholism, homosexuality, war, religion, menopause, spousal abuse, infidelity, drugs, mental health, AIDS, supernatural abilities, aging, racial issues, oppression, sex, and secrets, that it most definitely took away from the enjoyability factor.

The Development of These 5 Women Over 30 Years Finally Captivated Me.......2007-09-08

Worried about the rather flippant title, I went ahead and got this book for a trip just for an easy "beach read." It began as I suspected, rather shallow and a tad trite, but as I continued reading, I became more and more drawn into some of the characters and more curious to see how each of the 5 women would develop. Covering a 30 year span, 1968 to 1998, allowed enough time for each of their stories and personalities to really change and grow. I ended up loving it. As a bonus, each chapter is titled with an "Angry Housewives" Book Club selection and I am now reading some of these books. Thanks for the recommendations, Ms Landvik.

It is full of convoluted sentences, making it difficult to read. I consider myself well versed in the English language, but with this book I regularly have to read sentences a couple of times to find out what the writer is trying to convey. Anthony Esler should change careers and become an English professor. Then again, he would probably make students' lives in that discipline miserable too!!
