Book Description
This book shows how to combine game theory and option pricing in order to analyze dynamic multiperson decision problems in continuous time and under uncertainty. The basic intuition of the method is to separate the problem of the valuation of payoffs from the analysis of strategic interactions. Whereas the former is to be handled using option pricing, the latter can be addressed by game theory. The text shows how both instruments can be combined and how game theory can be applied to complex problems of corporate finance and financial intermediation. Besides providing theoretical foundations and serving as a guide to stochastic game theory modelling in continuous time, the text contains numerous applications to the theory of corporate finance and financial intermediation, such as the design of debt contracts, capital structure choice, the structure of banking deposit contracts, and the incentive effects of deposit insurance. By combining arbitrage-free valuation techniques with strategic analysis, the game theory analysis of options actually provides the link between markets and organizations.

Description:
We present a modeling framework for the analysis of investments in an oligopoly market for a homogenous commodity. The demand evolves stochastically and the firms carry out investment projects in order to adjust their production cost functions or production capacities. The model is formulated as a discrete time state-space game where the firms use feedback strategies. The firms are assumed to move sequentially to ensure a unique Markov-perfect Nash equilibrium. Once the equilibrium has been solved, Monte Carlo simulation is used to form probability distributions for the firms' cash flow patterns and accomplished investments. Such information can be used to value firms operating in an oligopoly market. An example of the model is given in a duopoly market. The example illustrates the trade-off between the value of flexibility and economies of scale under competitive interaction.

Book Description
Magmatism is the only true endogenic process for generating new material on the Earth's surface. Obviously, magmatism and tectonic movements are reflections of geodynamics, that is, physical processes which occur in deep-seated environments.
What are the interrelationships between magmatism and tectonics? How did the character of terrestrial magmatism change through time and are there any irregularities in this process? Were there particular "crisis" (catastrophe) points, when current tendencies in the evolution of magmatism changed sharply?
Answers to these cardinal Earth sciences questions and many others can be found in this book, which bridges a long-recognized gap in the literature.

Book Description
Fractal structures are found everywhere in nature, and as a consequence anomalous diffusion has far reaching implications in a host of phenomena. This book describes diffusion and transport in disordered media such as fractals, porous rocks and random resistor networks. Part I contains material of general interest to statistical physics: fractals, percolation theory, regular random walks and diffusion, continuous time random walks and Levy walks, and flights. Part II covers anomalous diffusion in fractals and disordered media, while Part III serves as an introduction to the kinetics of diffusion-limited reactions. Part IV discusses the problem of diffusion-limited coalescence in one dimension. This book will be of particular interest to researchers requiring a clear introduction to the field. It will also be a valuable source to graduate students studying in areas of physics, chemistry, and engineering.
Customer Reviews:
A fantastic introduction to the field..........2001-06-22
I am a graduate student in statistical physics with a primary interest in diffusion-limited reactions. I have found the above book to be invaluable, so much so that I'm disappointed that I didn't know about it earlier, as I'm sure it would have accelerated my understanding. It is, in my opinion, the best introduction to the field of diffusion-limited reactions that I'm aware of and certainly makes the research literature in this area much more accessible. I have also found the other sections of the book to be particularly illuminating and essential background reading, with Part I covering many of the principles of statistical physics. Each chapter contains a list of exercises to enhance understanding of the material and a list of "Open Challenges" which provoke new avenues of research. I personally think that the book references the research literature extremely well (indeed the authors have themselves made substantial contributions to the field) which makes it easy to pursue further details on areas of interest. I regard the book as essential for anyone wishing to develop an understanding of anomalous diffusion in disordered media and to be particularly accessible to graduate students and young researchers. It has certainly made it easier for me to make the transition from student to researcher in this area of statistical physics.

Book Description
New York rule #1: Don't make eye contact...
Samantha Leiffer has a self-centered self-help guru for a mother, a cadre of off-kilter Greenwich Village pals, and an ambisexually-cheating ex-boyfriend. She doesn't need more grief. Then she spies two people dumping a dubious-looking ice chest into the Hudson River, and she has a chilling hunch about what's inside.
Not being the kind of girl to let two psychos get away with murder, Sam sets out to unravel a mystery-and is soon being stalked by a sinister, shadowy figure who's wearing one-of-a-kind mirrored contact lenses.
Now, aided by a tough (but still very hot) detective, Sam is poking into some unsavory places, and finding out more creepy stuff than she ever wanted to know.

If someone had told me a few months ago that there was such a book as chick-lit romantic suspense, I would have said they were crazy. Alas, little did I know that not only does such a book exits, it's a totally awesome new genre! You really don't want to miss HIDE YOUR EYES by Alison Gaylin, and you definitely don't want to overlook her brand of sassiness, sarcastic humor, and down-and-dirty romantic suspense.
Poor Samantha Leiffer-the girl just cannot get a break! She moved to New York to be with the love of her life, Nate, a man more breathtaking than a god and more charming than a snake. The only problem was, Nate really was a snake, one who boinked everyone within walking distance of his and Samantha's apartment. And by everyone, I mean everyone-seems old Nate wasn't very discriminating when it came to the male or female status of his conquests. So here's poor Sam, working two jobs-one as a teacher at the Sunny Side nursery school, the other in the box-office of an off-off-off-off-off Broadway theater named the Space-and on Valentine's Day, that day of love and passion, she just so happens to witness a man and woman drop an ice chest into the Hudson River. That alone might be suspicious, but after all, it's a low point in Sam's life, and she's suspicious by nature.
What follows is something that even her mother, Sydney Stark-Leiffer, self-help guru and mostly off-her-rocker publicity hound, wouldn't be able to come up with a quick answer to. There really was something suspicious in that hastily dumped ice chest-a body, to be exact, and one with it's eyes gouged out, to be even more exact. Suddenly, Sam's life is in more upheaval than her Space coworker who took a three-year vow of silence to save her voice for her upcoming one-woman show.
Now a mystery psychopath in mirrored sunglasses is following her around, she's getting heavy-breathing and intimidating phone calls in the middle of the night, and a one-man Hercules show by the name of John Krull is helping Sam in her find-the-bad-guy detective show.
HIDE YOUR EYES is, beyond and without a doubt, simply awesome. Told in first person, you'll nevertheless feel as if you're walking beside Sam as she comes to terms with everything that's going on in her life-the departure of slimy Nate, the entrance of yummy Krull, the schizophrenia of her mother, the eccentricities of her circle of friends, and not to mention her need to single-handedly bring justice to New York. Alison Gaylin has penned a true winner, and I can't wait for the sequel to this book, which is slated to hit the shelves in January of 2006.
Extremely Good!.......2007-02-26
Sam works as a ticket-taker at an off-Broadway theater. She is happy with her own little world until everything changes one evening. While walking home, Sam sees two people throwing an ice chest in the river. A few days later, she hears on the news that an ice chest containing the body of a child was found. Sam is dumbfounded. She doesn't know what to do. Then she notices she is being followed. Sam doesn't know what to do: figure out the crime herself or go to the cops. Either way, she will have to figure it out fast or she could be next.
Excellent book! I was captivated by Gaylin's writing style and found the plot to be interesting and fast-paced. I will definitely be checking out more of Gaylin's work.
uneven storytelling.......2007-02-01
I liked aspects of this book.
The pacing seems a bit rough to me through most of the book.
The characters are not quite cookie-cutter, but nothing
freshly original, either.
I think the apsect that works the least is the
juxtapostion of humor and gruesome crime.
Some authors write about gruesome crimes and can have
their lead: detective, or coroner, or amatuer sleuth crack
one-liners, go off and fall right back into their lives as if nothing has happened and have it work and not seem callous. The attitude seems to fit the character. Not so for Samantha. Somehow, for me, the humor
doesn't come off in this book.
By no means a bad read. Just, uneven.
I will be giving Gaylin's next effort a try.
Maybe three and a half stars .......2006-10-02
Samantha witnesses two people throwing a perfectly good ice cooler off the pier. Normally, this wouldn't cause alarm, except that the man is wearing mirrored contact lenses that spook the crap out of her. Then she meets an evil man with those same lenses and thinks the worst. The storyline goes from one absurd scenario to an even sicker one.
At first, I thought this author would write like Janet Evanovich since it started out in first person and was filled with a collection of cooky characters. However, Alison Gaylin is no Evanovich, Please don't confuse the two. The styles of writing are completely different.
Hide Your Eyes starts out slow and even when you know what the plot is about, it takes awhile before you actually start getting into the storyline. Even then, the theories about what really happened seem far fetched. By the time you learn the killer's real motivation, it is even more disturbing.
Is it worth buying?
I'm a little up in the air about this one. For some people, I think they may really like it, but others I feel will not only be disappointed, but disturbed as well. It's not that it was a bad book and I've read plenty of books that were considerably sicker, it's just that the author had the tendency to go from one extreme to the next. On sale or library check out is my suggestion, but I'll let you be the judge. Sorry this wasn't more helpful.
Eminently readable.......2006-06-17
Highly enjoyable and eminently readable. The suspense built at a perfect pace and the main character was extremely likable. I love Gaylin's style. There were a few metaphors that made me laugh out loud. It was a true page-turner. The only reason I'm giving it 4 rather than 5 stars is that I wish children hadn't been tortured and killed in the book. It's too uncomfortable to read about. I'd rather only adults be killed.

Product Description
From Publishers Weekly
In journalist Gaylin's sharp debut suspense novel, preschool teacher and off-off-Broadway box office staffer Samantha Leiffer is happy with her offbeat life in downtown Manhattan--"the kind of muted happy that you don't notice at the time." Then, sitting on an abandoned pier taking a break from a tough day, she witnesses a couple disposing of an ice chest in the Hudson's chilly waters. Sam realizes that the man has seen her watching--and when the chest turns out to hold the body of a mutilated child, she's drawn into a world of intrigue. Attacks on Sam as well as key friends force her to try to unravel clues to the murder. Her chief ally is policeman John Krull, whose quiet solidity leads her gradually toward love. Though the crime plot overshadows several of Gaylin's most appealing secondary situations late in the book, this is a consistently entertaining evocation of Manhattan's strange and artsy underside, narrated by a heroine with a beautifully judged blend of warmth and wit, independence and edge.
