"In the beginning, God created Alabama," from which Adam Bob and Eveleen were banished because they ate the forbidden asparagus. This book humorously outlines the Old Testament from a Southern perspective without losing the integrity of the message.
Customer Reviews:
Aight, no what we gonna do is read this book frum cuver..........2001-01-09
This book is very well-written. It puts a humurous twist to the Old Testament, minus the prophets. The only way for y'all to get the jist of it is to read it for yurself (it's even funnier if u know the original stories). Just be careful if someone is readin' it to ya while yur drivin'. I don't think insurance covers "wreckless driving because of fits of uncontrollable hysteria". And y'all thought a redneck couldn't understand big words =)
Warning: consult your doctor before reading!!!!.......1999-04-28
This is one of the funniest books I have ever read. Each chapter keeps you in stitches as Charlie Thompson tells your favorite bible stories the way they were meant to be told-the southern way!
yee haw! this is the funniest book!! :).......1999-04-09

Book Description
In 1952, Charles Schnee won the Best Screenplay Oscar for The Bad and the Beautiful, the story of a Hollywood producer who is part genius, part louse.
Based loosely on Gone with the Wind producer David O. Selznick and played by Kirk Douglas, Schnee’s protagonist is producer Jonathan Shields, who desperately needs the help of three enemies from his past to make a comeback. Schnee presents the story through a series of flashbacks in which the three—director Fred Amiel (Barry Sullivan), actress Georgia Lorrison (Lana Turner), and writer James Lee Bartlow (Dick Powell)—describe their relationships with Shields.
Nominated for six Academy Awards and winner of five, The Bad and the Beautiful unfolds against the background of the movie industry of the 1930s and 1940s, as producer John Houseman points out in his foreword to this filmscript. In addition to the final script and Houseman’s foreword, Matthew J. Bruccoli has provided the original ending to the screenplay and Anne F. Hardin’s discussion of the David Raksin score that was used in the film and of adding music to film in general. The Bradshaw short story, "Memorial to a Bad Man," is also included in this volume.

Book Description
From Fanatics to Folk rejects conventional understandings of Brazilian millenarianism as exceptional and self-defeating. Considering millenarianism over the long sweep of Brazilian history, Patricia R. Pessar shows it to have been both dominant discourse and popular culture—at different times the inspiration for colonial conquest, for backlanders’ resistance to a modernizing church and state, and for the nostalgic appropriation by today’s elites in pursuit of “traditional” folklore and “authentic” expressions of faith. Pessar focuses on Santa Brígida, a Northeast Brazilian millenarian movement begun in the 1930s. She examines the movement from its founding by Pedro Batista—initially disparaged as a charlatan by the backland elite and later celebrated as a modernizer, patriot, and benefactor—through the contemporary struggles of its followers to maintain their transgressive religious beliefs in the face of increased attention from politicians, clergy, journalists, filmmakers, researchers, and museum curators.
Pessar combines cultural history spanning the colonial period to the present; comparative case studies of the Canudos, Contestado, Juazeiro, and Santa Brígida movements; and three decades of ethnographic research in the Brazilian Northeast. Highlighting the involvement of a broad range of individuals and institutions, the cross-fertilization between movements, contestation and accommodation vis-à-vis the church and state, and matters of spirituality and faith, From Fanatics to Folk reveals Brazilian millenarianism as long-enduring and constantly in flux.

Customer Reviews:
The first half is interesting and provocative but ..........2000-09-12
Among other available books about video games, the most important and unique contribution of this book is the attempt to discuss the video game phenomenon from a psychological perspective. For example, the theory of partial reinforcement is used to explain why people are hooked and addicted to the various video games. The author ascribed the cause to the rewarding but unpredictable feedback of a game, which gives the players a feeling of "almost getting there" and the victory is likely to be "right around the corner". This leads to the highest motivation and quitting the games becomes difficult. This book as a whole starts with similar arguments and explanations like this, which is interesting and illuminating. But, the latter half of the book is a bit irrelevant and disappointing, especially the last chapter about basic concepts of computer such as what are memory, input / output and CPU. This should no longer be able to interest the readers of today. Though it is understandable that there are actually not many serious researches and findings done about video games, the author seems to include this part in order to have enough to make up a book. Altogether, this book is a summary of psychological theories related to video games, and I think this book is a good background reading for studying video games.

Customer Reviews:
Yup it's bad alright.......2007-05-11
Just want to echo the negative reviews below. I've owned and read a lot of programming books in my life and this is one of the worst. Avoid it.
Just bad writing.......2006-08-13
This book is very poorly written and badly organized. Essential introductory topics are sprinkled throughout the book seemingly randomly. Much of the writing is horribly ambiguous or just plain unreadable. I am a beginning programmer, though I am highly proficient with Excel. I was lucky to be familiar with some other programming languages because the explanations of object-oriented programming concepts in this book (as well as other topics covered) would have been completely incomprehensible without a moderate level of background experience. The examples in the book are neither practical, nor particularly well designed to illustrate the VBA concepts that the authors are trying to teach. Instead, the authors seem to be preoccupied with designing examples to convey stylistic programming conventions that they personally favor.
A Cautionary Note.......2005-08-29
I have not read this book, but it is obviously based on a book by the same authors, Excel 2002 VBA Programmer's Reference.
That book has numerous errors: incorrect code that will not run, code that has incorrect variables, code that has nothing to do with the text above or below it, screen shots that have nothing to do with the text.
It also has an eclectic index that on occasion leads you to what you want.
The authors have been let down by the Wrox editors, but on occasion one can find gems of useful information in their book. I would be quite tempted to review the present version of the text, but my past experience with Wrox-edited books makes me hesitant to spend more money on such texts.
I hope someone who has actually read the book can supply us with a better review than this one.

is not a good start from here .......2005-03-30
sorry to say that i'm very dissapointed to own this book. For those who are new to VBA, it is not a good start from here. I also find that the example and the function covered is not practical enough to use to develop your own program. I would recomend a book written by John Walkenbach which the examples and function cover more practical
Everything is Here, Organization a bit confusing........2004-11-23
This huge (1176 page) book is intended for Excel users and programmers from beginning to advanced, this book presumes you have a reasonable working knowledge of excel and a full installation of the software. It does not presume that you have a working knowledge of VBA, after all, that's it's subject.
In fact, chapter 1 is titled Primer in Excel VBA. Excel VBA is, of course, a specialized version of Microsoft's standard VBA, where those specific points that cater to spread sheet manipulation are differrent from the VBA's associated with other parts of the Microsoft Office package.
This book gives a general introduction to VBA, but it is entirely within the context of Excel. This is indeed a Primer. It starts with how you open the Visual Basic Editor and goes on from there. Generally the book grows step by step. But not always. ==On page 83 it says: "OnTime - You can use the OnTime method to schedule a macro to run sometime in the future." OK, I understand this. But only 7 pages later it says: "VBA does support interface polymorphism. Interface polymorphism is orthogonal to class polymorphism." Huh? Does this help me schedule something to run in the future? Is this supposed to mean anything at all to me? Since I have no idea what it's talking about am I supposed to go look up all these new words somewhere? Is this really going to help me? Anyway, you skip a few chapters and you're back into getting some useful information about things like creating user forms.
All in all I rate the book quite high. Everything you always wanted to know is there. And it is supposed to be a reference manual, not a tutorial. My only complaint is that I think it could have organized a bit better.
Book Description
This is the first comprehensive history of all the British Special Forces, from their beginnings during the Second World War to the Falklands War. The birth of many of the Special Forces was controversial - they were accused of being 'private armies' and a waste of valuable manpower that could have been better used within the regular forces. Their existence was justified only by their successes.
The secrecy that still surrounds some of the Special Forces makes writing an authoritative history no easy task. William Seymour's fascinating narrative draws on a wide variety of documentary sources and eye-witness accounts from surviving members of the Forces. The Special Forces covered are: The Commandos, the Special Boat Section, Combined Operations Pilotage Parties, the Long Range Desert Group, Popski's Private Army, The Special Air Service, the Special Boat Squadron and Raiding Forces, and the Royal Marines Special Forces. From the chaungs of Burma to the African desert, the Greek islands to the D-Day landing beaches, Special Forces played a vital part in Allied victory in the Second World War.

Book Description
Do new information technologies always produce progress and enlightenment? No, at least not according to observers in seventeenth-century Europe. As Brendan Dooley demonstrates in The Social History of Skepticism, the transformation of information about present and past politics into a saleable product, whether in the form of commissioned histories or in the form of journalism, turned writers into speculators, information into opinion, and readers into critics. The result was a powerful current of skepticism with extraordinary consequences. Combined with late-seventeenth-century developments in other areas of thought and writing, it produced skepticism about the possibility of gaining any historical knowledge at all.
Joining the history of ideas to the history of journalism and publishing, Dooley sets out to discover when early modern people believed their political informants and when they did not. He examines some of those who got the information first: the manuscript gossip writers of Rome and Venice. He then considers the writers of printed gazettes, who bought their own information or else received it from those in power. He explores historians, both of independent means and employed by governments, and the episodes -- political, social, and cultural -- that caused them to write. He also examines the readers who knew better than what they read and the cultural critics, such as Pierre Bayle, who bemoaned the politicization of truth. The skeptical outcome, he shows, helped bring about a historiographical reform movement that introduced theories and techniques still in use today for discovering the past.

Book Description
The explosive rise and shining future of Santa Fe's informatics industry, where scientists are converting abstract theory into real profit.
How did a small Southwest town transform itself into a hotbed of research science, advanced technology, and money? Tracking key figures in Santa Fe's emerging industries, Ed Regis explains how entrepreneurial scientists are using complexity theory and powerful, experimental computer programs to create practicaland profitableapplications. Their efforts to convert vast, diverse data, whether chemical or biological or computational, into useful information is leading to new drugs and medical therapies, ultimately revolutionizing our understanding of effective business strategies. With cutting-edge technology, companies are able to test chemicals, drugs, and interactions virtually before committing huge laboratory investments.
Profiling four firms at the forefront of this scientific and business revolutionincluding the BiosGroup, led by complexity theory pioneer Stuart Kauffman, and OpenEye Scientific Software, founded by Anthony Nicholls, the Steve Jobs of the Info MesaRegis offers behind-the-scenes experiences of the brilliant, often eccentric leaders in this heated competition for scientific innovation and commercial success.
Customer Reviews:
Better than Mambo Chicken!.......2004-05-18
Ed Regis is an exceptional writer.
This book is actually based on research, or least we anticipate a journalist's report of details. If you read his earlier book Mambo Chicken and the Transhuman Condition you might choke on a few missing details. Ever hear of a transhuman? Regis applied this title grabbing "transhuman" to a few people who didn't know what the word was, let alone meant.
Regis' use of "transhuman" was wide of the mark. His writing was marginalized when he neglected to point out the transhuman futurists in Los Angeles. Even one who coined the term, let along with a hundred others. At least they called themselves transhumans, unlike the Silicon Valley geeks. But then Wired magazine appealed to Silicon Valley and LA was Hollywierd. Sounds like Regis was noshing his editors at Wired.
At least Regis is moving in an interesting direction with alchemy, can't factualize that.
Roy Whitman
Well Written and Researched Complexity and Santa Fe Hype.......2003-07-06
This is a well researched, well written, interesting book about scientists in Santa Fe developing entrepreneurial start-ups based on complexity science. The science and business combination is fun and wide ranging. It belongs to a genre of books about the Santa Fe Institute, of which Michael Waldrop's Complexity is one of the earliest and best. Many of the characters are the same in both books. My criticism of the Info Mesa is that much of it reads like publicity hype. It overstates the scientific accomplishments of the Santa Fe Institute and the importance of complexity research. It overstates the health of the tech business climate in Santa Fe. It romanticizes the people who work at SFI. It romanticizes the town in which they work. The descriptions of Santa Fe are so over the top as to be laughable to those of us who live here. Not even our tourist brochures hype Santa Fe so well. So, in conclusion, the Info Mesa's story isn't really so. All of you should just stay home, and leave Santa Fe to those of us who got here before you. ;-)
