Customer Reviews:
Innovative.......2007-01-03
An interesting concept presented in an innovative novel. Easy to read and follow. Just like a novel once you start, it is a page turner and hard to put down.
I highly recommend this along with Goldratt's first novel, The Goal.
If you like learning from novels.......2006-10-24
A "made-for-TV" novel with a lesson about a new method of project scheduling. Goldratt invented the "Theory of Constraints," a general problem analyis and planning method which he then applies to various areas. Each application presented in story format.
"Critical Chain" = "Critical Path" x "Theory of Constraints".
Read this book if you want an easy read and a fun introduction to the subject. But if you actually want to apply the Critical Chain method, you'll probably need a textbook format. Or make the effort to abstract the method from the dialogue of the story.
5 star concepts in a 3 star novel.......2006-10-04
Eli Goldratt is one of the most respected experts in the field of Project Management. His work on the Theory of Constraints provides project managers with some very useful tools for keeping projects focused, on budget, and on target. I have definitely benefitted from Goldratt's insights into these topics.
Unfortunately, this work of fiction, with three largely separate story lines, makes for an awkward read. The 246 page novel has about half of its page count spent on two stories that add little to the main message of the book. The ongoing storylines about fixing the business school's executive MBA program and the main character's relationship with his wife Judith have nothing to do with project management. Fortunately, these two superfluous stories are at the end or beginning of each chapter and it is easy to skip over them and get to the useful subject material in the main story line, the running of projects and their problems. Skipping over about 100 pages of the book makes me question the value of paying for a book that could have easily been less than half as long. I might be OK with that if the stories were interesting or well written, but they are not.
Using the book as a reference would be challenging. It has no Table of Contents, no Index, nor a Glossary. The Chapters do not even have titles, or a summary of the key concepts at the end in most cases. I would struggle to find an important concept if I went back to the book more than a week or so after reading it.
A much slimmer, edited version of this book, with just the TOC and project management material, laid out end to end would be an instant must have, and a valuable learning tool.
A must for every potential project manager.......2006-08-11
I've been introduced to CCPM (critical chain project management) years ago in school, but thought it was boring. Reading Goldratt's novel opened my mind to it in a much deeper way, and I'm now using it at my work with great success. I also recommend his other business novels.
if you manage projects for a living..........2006-06-27
Face it, everything that happens in a business is either a process or a project. Even companies that manage projects for a living (e.g. construction, software development) often are lousy at managing internal projects (working ON the business). If you have anything to do with projects, you need to read this book. It will change how you look at projects forever. This guy is brilliant.

Book Description
What explains the national economic success of the United States, Britain, Germany, and Japan? What can be learned from the long-term championship performances of leading business firms in each country? How important were specific innovations by individual entrepreneurs? And in the end, what is the true nature of capitalist development?
The Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Thomas K. McCraw and his coauthors present penetrating answers to these questions. Creating Modern Capitalism is the first book to explain for a broad audience the interconnections among technological innovation, management science, the power of entrepreneurship, and national economic growth. The authors approach each question from a comparative framework and with a unique triple focus on national economic systems, particular companies, and individual business leaders.
Above all, the book focuses on how specific entrepreneurs influenced the economic success of their countries: Josiah Wedgwood and Henry Royce in Britain; August Thyssen and Georg von Siemens in Germany; Henry Ford, Alfred Sloan, and the two Thomas J. Watsons in the United States; Sakichi Toyoda, Masatoshi Ito, and Toshifumi Suzuki in Japan.
The product of a three-year collaborative effort at the Harvard Business School, the book combines cutting-edge scholarship with a finely tuned sense of the art of management. It will engage general readers as well as those with a special interest in entrepreneurship and the evolution of national business systems.
Customer Reviews:
A pleasant read.......2007-09-24
The book covers the history of capitalism in great detail outlining the major turning points and how it has evolved to shape modern capitalism. A definite must read for whoever is interested in the nature of a capitalist society.
Harvard MBA reviews his Professor's Works.......2000-05-06
This is an excellent collection of articles describing people, firms, and nations that succeeded in modern capitlism. Looking a the four most successful economies of the past two centuries: England, US, Germany, and Japan- Prof. McCraw's expertly edited and coherent collection of articles gives the reader a flavor of what made for great success in the capitalist economy. Each country has three articles: a firm, an entrepenure, and the country itself for a total of 12 articles each written by true experts. McCraw's understanding of capitlism is somewhat skewed toward the modern, however on the whole the book is extremely balanced. Of partiuclar note, is Prof. David Moss's article on the Deutch Bank which dicusses the succcess, failures, rewards, and dark side of capitalism.

garbage.......2001-08-31
Amazing to look back at the garbage that was written and eaten up by paranoid US management. Life time employment, company loyalty , and payment based on tenure are the exact things that have undone the Japanese companies. Sorry Bill but you should have picked a letter earlier in the alphabet.
The opinion of a lazy american worker.......2001-06-11
William Ouchi claims that American productivity is stagnant or declining and he's right. But what he fails to mention is that corporations are firing their workforce here , in favor of nations where they can get people to work for slave wages, in order to increase productivity ( this done courtesy of american tax payer). And profits for these Companies are not stagnant or declining, but are reaching record-breaking highs. The fact that this is being done renders any of the points Ouchi makes in this book invalid. Why learn any lessons from Ouchi about how to increase productivity in the US when you can just fire your work force, pack up and go to another country while a lazy tax payer like myself foots the bill?
Eye-opening insight of Japanese organizational structure........1998-02-22
Japanese business has grown and thrived. The organizations are built on a paternal structure with lifetime employment at one company: virtually unheard of anymore in American business. The employees are trained and work in all facets of a company, not just in one department. They are expected to work long hours and not be home too early lest the neighbors think that they rank low in value at work and the honor of the family name be put in jeopardy. They begin training children as early as four years of age to groom them for the most prestigious universities.

Identity and the Modern Organization presents a lively exchange of ideas among psychology and management scholars on the realities of modern organizational life and their effect on the identities that organizations and their members cultivate. This book bridges the domains of psychology and management to facilitate a multi-disciplinary, multi-level integration of theory and research on identity processes.
The volume highlights answers to important questions raised by shifting organizational forms and arrangements, such as:
*How are identity processes affected by, and how do they affect, the motivations of individuals and organizations?
*How do identity and identification shape the social processes that unfold between individuals and groups?
*How do strong versus weak contexts affect identity processes as the boundaries of organizations and social categories within them become more permeable?
An effective tool for understanding a wide variety of organizational phenomena, this book is intended for scholars and students in the fields of management, organizational theory, organizational behavior, social psychology, and industrial/organizational psychology.

Book Description
Genomics in Asia focuses on issues dealing with the development and application of molecular biology and bioengineering technologies in Asian societies and cultures. The workshop on which this book is based aimed to gain an insight into bioethical issues with relation to the dynamics of Asian societies, cultures and religions. It was to generate debate on Asian Genomics and create a basis for comparative research into the relationship between the development and application of modern genetics, cultural values, and local interests in Asian societies. The papers first of all reflect a great variety of bioethical views discussed from the angle of different disciplinary and cultural backgrounds, creating a basis on which a further comparison between different local knowledge systems in relation to genomic practices will be feasible.
This book provides insights on research into the social, political and ethical aspects of genomics, and reflects the bioethical experiences of researchers from Japan, China, the Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, Pakistan, India and Malaysia. The subjects of discussion vary from genetics in China to religious perspectives on cloning and genetic therapy. Themes include the commercial and medical application of new bioengineering technologies, such as the impact of preventive genetic medicine, genetic counselling, genetically modified organisms [GMOs] and stem-cell research on wealth distribution, cultural traditions, social well-being, and political and legal regulations and institutions. In the study of bioengineering in Asia, various perspectives were brought together at a concrete research level. The authors tried to avoid macro-concepts incorporated by dichotomies of East and West and to acquire new insights into the relationship between local knowledge systems and cultures and interests groups on the one hand and the constellation of various interests of scientific research, governments and MNCs on the other.

Book Description
Continental Drift: Colliding Continents, Converging Cultures is as much an account of the impressions Western culture made on Constantin Roman as a young researcher from behind the Iron Curtain as a personal history of the developing new science of plate tectonics. The book elucidates the author's struggles against a web of bureaucracy to secure his rights in the free world while exploring historical events. A refined observer of the contrast of cultures between East and West, Roman's personal story relates his encounters with eminent scientists, artists, and embassy officials. Constantin Roman defied communist restrictions by coming to England in 1968 on a NATO travel grant. After being encouraged by Keith Runcorn at the University of Newcastle to stay in Britain for a higher degree, he received a Ph.D. scholarship at the University of Cambridge. This is where he studied under Sir Edward Bullard when plate tectonics was in its infancy, when the concepts of continental drift and sea floor spreading were galvanizing geology. As a continental student adrift on English shores, Roman soon staked his claim on the plate tectonics map with his work on the deep earthquakes of the Carpathians. But the stakes became higher with a race against the clock to be the first to publish a plate tectonics solution to the Himalayan earthquakes. Continental Drift delves into all of this and more. It will delight earth scientists, physicists, and general readers as well as historians of science, who will find a wealth of personal recollections of key figures in the continental drift story.

Don't bother.......2007-08-30
This book is full of cliches, making it pretty much unreadable. I don't think I've ever read anything so poorly written.
Don't waste your money!
The Remarkable Miss Frankenstein is Right!.......2007-04-08
This was great fun to read, though it may not be for everyone, I'd still say give it a try, it's not that bad...honestly. I don't know why some people are all up in arms about the historical inaccuracies; didn't they read the author's note? It states: "I have taken certain liberties with many historical facts and literary characters, making this all definitely all fiction. Please forgive me but I couldn't resist.
To twist Mark Twain's famous quote on his The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn:
`Persons attempting to find sense in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find historical accuracy in it will be shot.'"
Now if you cannot stand historical inaccuracies in any way, even intentional, I'd stay away from the book. But if you are looking for a light, fluffy, fun, punny, and extremely entertaining book, I'd snag this book up right away! While I probably missed plenty of Beatle's songs since I'm from a younger generation and don't know them all; I noticed a lot of other things. There was Durlock Homes and Dr. Whutson, E.A. Poe, contemporary slang, and loads more, but I don't want to give anymore of them away. More fun to read them in the book! I loved that the monster had a name and he was part of the family!
The only thing that annoyed me were all the references to Clair's chest and Ian's reactions to them, got to be too much, but I'm glad to say that that slacked off towards the end. I'm happy to know that Jane Van Helsing is getting her own book (The Reluctant Miss Van Helsing) and I can't wait to read that (wonder if it has Asher in it!)!
All in all, this was a fun book with great characters and I loved both Clair and Ian, especially Clair, she was great! The chapter titles were quite amusing too. I highly recommend this book!
great book..........2006-08-20
i really enjoyed reading this book,,,i thought it was well writen,,,and fun to read,,,i recommend this book to everyone!!
Not bad.......2006-01-11
I found it difficult to rate this book as it was alternatingly laugh-out-loud hilarious and boring. Clair Frankenstein is a scientist who wants to win the Scientific Discovery of the Decade Award and is therefore investigating the supernatural, much as her uncle did when he assembled the Frankenstein monster (now known as her cousin Frederick)from various body parts. Her first attempt to find a vampire results in her meeting Baron Ian Huntsley whom she determines is not a vampire when he asks her to go riding in the park in broad daylight. Ian attempts to prevent Clair from discovering the supernatural creatures by distracting her through seduction attempts and then directing her towards the harmless Duke of Ghent. The situations Clair finds herself in are quite humorous, particularly when she witnesses the liasion between Lady Montcrief and the Honorable Christopher Wilder. The intermingling of people and characters from various time frames was also amusing, including Durlock Homes and Professor Whutson, Edgar Allan Poe, and Vincent Price (with his trademark laugh of course). However, I was annoyed by Clair's naive and ditzy letters to her friend Jane Van Helsing and her seemingly inability to use any common sense. Overall, this novel was worth reading but not nearly on the level of Lynsay Sands, Katie MacAlister, or MaryJanice Davidson.
Please Don't Waste the time.......2005-12-02
I thought this would be a fun read, being an historical buff and one to love whimsy.... I was much dissapointed with with what others have mentioned as well. The need to use the Beatles????!!! In an 1800's book? Why? For what purpose?
Off with thier heads, she claims was a common phrase for Queen Elizabeth 1st...whose Mother died from that very thing, so while people were executed by QEI?? It was the Red Queen from Alice in Wonderland. How hard would simple research?
I had thought this would be a cute read, something for my bath, instead? I was so irritated by the whole effort of dealing with the authors thought of being cute? It messed up my night.
Truly? Just go and find Julie Garwood's Bride, or Jude Devereaux if you want a good book, this one would best be used as filler for your bird's poop.
