Professor Keown has written an excellent overview of the personal finance issues and topics that impact our lives. This is a thoroughly readable text covering a wide range of topics including financial planning, cash and money management, insurance, investments and tax-related subjects. The author skillfully combines theory and practical application to educate the reader in a meaningful way. Highly recommended as a resource to increase your financial literacy quotient.

In my view this book will be a milestone in the study of evolution."-JOHN TYLER BONNER, Princeton University Leo Buss expounds a general theory of development through a simple hierarchical extension of the synthetic theory of evolution. He perceives innovations in development to have evolved in ancestral organisms where the germ line was not closed to genetic variation arising during the course of ontogeny. Variants that favor both the proliferation of the cell lineage and the organism harboring them were sequentially incorporated in an increasingly sophisticated epigenetic program. In contrast, variants that favor the replication of the cell lineage at the expense of the individual were eliminated and ultimately favored the fixation of variants that limited the production and/or expression of subsequent variation, creating a stable developmental system. The author traces the origin of the modern preoccupation with the individual as a unit of selection to its historical foundations in the works of August Weismann, exposing defects in the translation of the nineteenth-century germ-soma doctrine into modern evolutionary language. Recognizing that the germ-soma barrier is a derived evolutionary state, Professor Buss illustrates how patterns in embryonic cleavage, gastrulation, mosaicism, induction, and competence arise as a consequence of the often conflicting evolutionary interests of cells and individuals. Building on this foundation, he argues that evolution of controls over the heritability of cell lineages have come to fix developmental programs and establish heterochrony as the principal vehicle of evolutionary change. Finally, Professor Buss argues that the perspective applied to development can be generalized and applied to other transitions between units of selection that have occurred in the history of life. Leo W. Buss is Associate Professor of Biology at Yale University.

A Bold Contribution to the Evolution of Development.......2007-07-11

Dr. Buss's work is a theoretical attempt to conceptualize the history of life as a history of ever-increasing cohesive units; the "individual" as we know it, as a discrete, functionally integrated unit, is taken for granted in modern evolutionary theory and generalized over the whole of biological diversity and history. However, Buss contends that, at present as in the past, "individuality" so taken is a matter of degree. Tightly knit functional multicellular individuality has evolved because of archaic competition between cell lineages with interests that have often been at odds with the wholes they comprised. He offers supporting evidence from embryology, developmental biology, genetics, and evolutionary biology to support his position. Though very heavy on theory, a good dose of exposure, or at least appreciation, of the above fields is helpful to navigate through his many illustrations. Overall, an interesting work and, no doubt, a bold contribution to contemporary evolutionary developmental biology.

This book is the first of three volumes in which the recent knowledge of the extent and chronology of Quaternary glaciations has been compiled on a global scale. This information is seen as a fundamental requirement, not only for the glacial workers, but for the wider user-community of general Quaternary workers. In particular the need for accurate ice-front positions is a basic requirement for the rapidly growing field of palaeoclimate modelling. In order to provide the information for the widest-possible range of users in the most accessible form, a series of digital maps was prepared.

The glacial limits were mapped in ArcView, the Geographical Information System (GIS) used by the work group. Included with the publication is a CD with digital maps, showing glacial limits, end moraines, ice-dammed lakes, glacier-induced drainage diversions and the locations of key sections through which the glacial limits are defined and dated. For major parts of Europe also the extent of the maximum Eemian transgression has been indicated. The digital maps in this volume cover all of Europe and parts of northwestern Siberia.
Both overview maps and more detailed maps at a scale 1: 1,000,000 are provided.

All of Nancy Martin's books are fun, fast and easy reads. They are entertaining, will make you laugh, and great summer books for relaxing. It is enjoyable to try to figure out Who Done It. Great characters.

fun, witty mystery.......2007-05-01

Cross Your Heart and Hope to Die is the 4th full-length book and the 5th story (including the novella in the Drop Dead Blonde anthology) in the Blackbird Sisters Mystery series.

This episode marks a change in the series, as the murder socialite-turned-society reporter Nora Blackbird has to solve this time is the murder of her boss.

From a fashion show featuring the revolutionary Brinker Bra, which Nora's sister Libby can't remove, to sister Emma hooking up with a washed-up country music star in rehab, to Emma's boyfriend being the prime suspect in the murder, the laughs propel the mystery to its surprising conclusion.

The Good:
The witty banter. It brings to mind the screwball comedy movies and is just pure fun to read.
The characters. Despite the humor, the characters feel real, and are people you can care about.
The change in the series. Very often, mystery series, especially ones with amateur sleuths become stagnant. The murder of Nora's boss makes that less likely--or at least puts it off for a while.

The Bad:
The silliness. You do have to have a tolerance for occasionally over-the-top adult humor. Selling sex toys, a bra you can't remove... if you don't find those things funny, you'll enjoy the book less.

The Verdict:
I'm looking forward to the next book in this fun series.

not very good.......2007-03-26

I wasn't impressed with this book, my first foray into a "Blackbird Sisters" mystery. Characters, action, plot, all ho-hum. I thought the dog, Spike, was annoying and needed to be sent to obedience school.

Not Her Best.......2006-04-29

I like this series a lot, but I wasn't all that impressed with this installment.

The back and forth with Mick and Nora was pretty annoying, and I really didn't care for the ending. Also, I was really disappointed to see the departure of Spike, one of the more entertaining "characters" in the series. Unfortunately, while we lost Spike, we still have Libby. Her "Maybe I should make < > my target customer" got old after the second time, and it seemed that there was way too much time and emphasis put on her stupid new "career." The author would've been better off sending her to New Zealand and keeping Spike around.

I hope the next installment is better.

My 1st and I'm Hooked.......2006-03-21

This was my first read in the Blackbird Sisters series, and I'm hooked on the premise. Nora Blackbird finds herself in the spotlight when her boss, society columnist Kitty Keough, is found dead on Nora's back porch. When suspicion begins to turn toward Nora's boyfriend, Michael Abruzzo, son of a crime mobster, Nora's in a panic and trying to find the real killer. Meanwhile, sister Emma's escaped from rehab and taken up with a cowpoke. Other sister Libby has a new job selling marital aids.

This was a fun read, although I'm getting a little tired of all these protagonists who wear fashion-designer clothing, along with chick-lit books that drop names throughout. It all seems so cliche-ish. But the sexual tension between Nora and Michael works, Nora's two quirky sisters make this mix that much more interesting, and the mystery fairly good.

I'm going to backtrack now and read the first books in the series and look forward to what's next.
