"If you had suggested to me ten years ago, even five, that I would methodically (if unconsciously) set about destroying my financial security, losing all the money I'd made on a bestselling book, losing, even, my furniture, I would have laughed. I would have told you I was over my biggest hurdles, that I knew who I was and had the financial comfort and psychological equanimity to prove it."

So begins Colette Dowling's Maxing Out, a compelling personal-finance autobiography. Dowling recounts the gritty details of three years of mindless overspending that culminated in a tax bill that forced her to sell off two homes in order to pay off part of a debt to the IRS. From there, the 55-year-old bestselling author of The Cinderella Complex culls her full life story (and incorporates short bios of half a dozen professional women) to forward her premise that even today's younger generation of women often fall into a stance of almost willful noncomprehension of personal finance in line with a cultural bias against women who are financially competent and independent.

Women on the hunt for detailed financial guidance will want more than this book. But for the insecure woman who's just acknowledging the limits of her financial knowledge, this book can give some helpful context to some women's struggles, as well as the sense that one's got--in Dowling--a very sympathetic and wise fellow student. --Jean Lenihan

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Prince Charming Ain't Coming to the Rescue.......2000-12-01

This book combines thoughtful insight into the emotional, behavorial and psychological reasons many women get into deep debt and fail to plan financially for retirement. There is no doubt that both men and women get into deep debt. Dowling suggests that women are more prone to lose control of their financial well-being because of gender scripting we get from a very early age. The challenge of the book is to see through this gender scripting, decide how it may be affecting your financial decisions and then take charge of your financial life. I loved it!

4 out of 5 stars Lots to think about here.......2000-01-23

Yes, there is a lot of personal information in the book and more repetition than necessary, but I also found lots to think about, and many good questions. Dowling doesn't present all the answers, but with this topic we need to find our own anyway. I think Dowling does a good job of presenting theory and research on why women have difficulty taking control of their finances. Everyone's story is different, but if you pay attention you will find research, stories and questions that should further your own exploration of issues you may have around money. I am very picky about what I read and I consider the time I spent reading this book time well spent.

1 out of 5 stars save your money; don't buy this book.......1999-06-30

I'd be better with money if I avoided buying books like this one. The author's recounting of her money trouble is interesting, but drawn out much too long. And too much time is spent praising Jerrold Mundis; I thought references to "Jerry" were cutesy and inappropriate. If you like your authors to rely on anecdotal evidence, generalize from their own experience to the universe, and write with the level of sophistication encountered in women's magazines, you'll love this book. If you want more than this, avoid it. It would have benefitted from a better editor.

2 out of 5 stars Has good content, but also has serious errors.......1999-01-02

Had opportunity to read this book. I saw both things helpful and also serious errors. The helpful part is towards the end of the book when Ms. Dowling tells of programs she's been in to control her spending habits. I believe this was debtors anonymous. I've seen how people can get into debt because of the combination of the seductiveness of places people shop and the strong desire to want something even though it can't be afforded. I would also criticize this book as Ms. Dowling refers to feminist bugaboos that have been debunked, particularly how females have been treated in classroom situations. This is a study by the American Association of University Women. Even this organization debunks these studies. Also, there is a tendency to blame things such as the "The Patriarchy" for women's problems. Again, this is victim-feminist propaganda. I would suggest in future writings to leave gender blaming alone. Stick to how to stay out of debt and if in it how to get out of it, even though it takes hard discipline.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting in part, but many blanket conclusions.......1998-11-05

Although the book gives some telling insight into the behavior of SOME women, she extends her suppositions to include ALL women. Also, her conclusion that all of womens failures in finance are due to culture is very poorly supported - in fact, she never mentions that there is some good evidence that some basic tendencies of both men and women may be "hardwired".

          Book Description

International law is not static; it develops constantly. Namibia is a classical case which illustrates the changing law of nations. This can best be demonstrated by an analysis of the legal and factual elements present in the creation, boundaries and territorial claims of Namibia, and the determinations of the League of Nations and the political organs of the United Nations which developed and clarified the rules of international law. Given the unique international status of Namibia which commenced in 1920 and terminated in 1990, and the diplomatic history regarding title to Walvis Bay and the Penguin Islands which commenced in 1486 and ended in 1994 following the joint administration of these territories by Namibia and South Africa, a consideration of a large number of different topics within public international law is required. Some of these issues are very complex and technical, as they involve major questions of international law and politics. The author relies heavily on primary sources, case law, State practice and the opinions of eminent jurists. The work will prove invaluable to all those interested in public international law, international relations, political science, history and geography.

The Law & Anthropology Yearbook brings together a collection of studies that discuss legal problems raised by cultural differences between people and the law to which they are subject. Volume 11 of Law & Anthropology includes eight studies that discuss various forms in which the rights of indigenous people are violated. Topics include: the emergence of indigenous law in Chile as an example of legal pluralism; the impact of Peruvian national legislation on indigenous peoples; and the fishing dispute in Atlantic Canada following the decision of the Supreme Court of Canada acknowledging that the aboriginal right to fish was never extinguished.

                  Book Description

Volume 7 of Law and Anthropology brings together a collection of studies that discuss legal problems raised by cultural differences between people and the law to which they are subject. This volume developed from the idea that it can be useful to consider current discussions in various legal systems facing issues of cultural difference that cannot be regarded as legal problems related to indigenous societies alone. The book focuses on contradiction between national law and complex and diverse kinship structures, which are essential for the cultural identity of both indigenous groups and cultural minorities. The social construction of gender relations and gender conflicts is an important theme in many essays. Some of the essays examine the area of conflict between cultural practices and universal human rights standards. The demand for cultural rights may collide with human rights standards, especially with the principles of gender equality. This volume will be of great interest to academics and to all those with practical involvement in the field of cultural pluralism. Previously published by VWGO Verlag in Austria, Law and Anthropology will be published and distributed by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers from Volume 7 onwards.

                    Book Description

The Law & Anthropology Yearbook brings together a collection of studies that discuss legal problems raised by cultural differences between people and the law to which they are subject. Most of the contributions to Volume 9 were presented at the IXth International Symposium of the Commission on Folk Law and Legal Pluralism, and focus on the subject of `Natural Resources, Environment, and Legal Pluralism'. The natural resources which form the environment of rural people are subject to increasing pressures. Intensive forms of resource extraction increasingly endanger the continued availability and ecological quality of land, forest and water resources. Especially in regions inhabited by indigenous peoples, struggles over the control and social and economic function of natural resources are directly linked to conflicts over political and economic self-determination. Inevitably, the different legal systems, and the substantive and procedural possibilities they provide, become involved in struggles over political, economic and ecological values and objectives. The focus on natural resource management issues therefore is a particularly fruitful field to examine the contemporary functions of folk law in complex legal and economic systems.

                              Book Description

Various problems in climate research, which require the use of advanced statistical techniques, are considered in this book. The examples emphasize the notion that the knowledge of statistical techniques alone is not sufficient. Good physical understanding of the specific problems in climate research is needed to guide the researcher in choosing the right approach to obtain meaningful answers. The second edition of this book, originally based on contributions given during a school sponsored by the European Union on the Italian island of Elba, continues to be based on these general principles. The general outline has been kept the same, covering aspects such as the examination of the observational record, stochastic climate models, analytical techniques, e.g. EOF, teleconnections and so on, but the chapters have been revised and updated, in some cases extensively, to cover the advances in the field in the years since the first edition.

This edition pairs Mary Hays's Memoirs of Emma Courtney (1796) with Amelia Alderson Opie's Adeline Mowbray; or the Mother and the Daughter (1804). Emma Courtney represents the radical side of the debates in England about appropriate behavior for women in love at the end of the eighteenth century. Adeline Mowbray has been more often read as a warning about the dangers of putting into practice the radical reforms advocated by women like Hays. Reading together these novels by women who were both close friends and associates of Mary Wollstonecraft in the heady revolutionary days complicates their easy division into "radical" and "conservative" or "Jacobin" and "anti-Jacobin" categories. Debates of the time on abolition, childhood education, rakish masculinity, and the consequences for women of sexuality outside of marriage are central to both of these novels, and readily explored by offering both under a single cover. The College Publishing edition includes an introductory essay detailing the importance and problems of biographical approaches to these two novels in particular, and works by women writers in general. Additional short essays are interpolated throughout, providing helpful contextual material, while the varied responses of eighteenth and nineteenth-century readers are represented by a selection of contemporary reviews of each novel in the appendix.

                                Book Description

First published in the turbulent decade following the French Revolution, Memoirs of Emma Courtney is based on Mary Hays' own passionate struggle with romance and Enlightenment philosophy. A feminist and ardent disciple of Mary Wollstonecraft, Hays reveals the lamentable gap between `what women are' and `what woment ought to be'. The novel is one of the most articulate and detailed expressions of the yearnings and frustrations of a woman living in late eighteenth-century English society. It questions marital arrangements and courtship rituals by depicting a woman who actively pursues the man she loves. The novel explores the links between sexuality, desire, and economic and social freedom, suggesting the need for improvement in the laws of society which `have enslaved, enervated, and degraded woman'.

Any fan of Mary Wollstonecraft should turn next to books like this one. Hays's novel is part of the first wave of responses to *A Vindication of the Rights of Woman* (1792) and shows that Wollstonecraft could produce thoughtful responses from British radicals that balance the unthinking ones from conservatives. With Amelia Opie's *Adeline Mowbray*, this novel tells us much about early British feminism and its interest in the novel. Broadview's texts, furthermore, are excellent and provide wonderful supporting materials; this one is no exception.

I usually love reading books written pre-20th Century, as this one was (1796) but I didn't really enjoy this one as much as I expected. Even though it caused a mild scandal when first published, it is (naturally) rather tame by today's standards. The heroine's great crime is to declare her love for a man before he declares his. How shocking!

The book is written as a series of letters to her beloved's son telling him about her great crime, in order to save him from making the same mistakes. I did admire the way she examined and analyzed her feelings, and how she could stand back and see how her actions didn't always coincide with her intentions. She just loved this guy passionately and she couldn't talk herself out of it, no matter how hard she tried. It got to be rather tedious though, after a while, and I wished she could just get over it and get on with her life.

All the melodrama in the book comes in the last thirty pages, which is such a contrast to the mild, slow-paced rest of the book. It seemed very foreign to the first part, like the author felt she ought to throw in some action at long last. All in all, it was okay, but not great.

                                Book Description

Over the past several years, "the American in Tuscany" has become a literary subgenre. Launched by the phenomenal success of Frances Mayes's Under the Tuscan Sun, bookstores now burgeon with nimble, witty accounts of this clash in cultures-Americans trying to do American things in Italy and bumping against a brick wall of tradition.

Before this subgenre exhausts itself, it's only fair that we hear the other side of the story-that of a native Tuscan and of dozens of Americans who have stormed through his life and homeland, determined to find in it whatever they are looking for, whether quaintness or wisdom, submission or direction.

There is no one better to provide this view than Dario Castagno. A Tuscan guide whose client base is predominantly American, Dario has spent more than a decade taking individuals and small groups on customized tours through the Chianti region of Tuscany. Reared in Britain through early childhood, he speaks English fluently and is therefore capable of fully engaging his American clients and getting to know them. Too Much Tuscan Sun is Dario's account of some of his more remarkable customers, from the obsessive and the oblivious to the downright lunatic.

It is also a primer on Tuscany--its charms and its culture. Structured around a typical Tuscan year, Dario takes us through the sights, smells, and sounds of Chianti during each of the twelve months, including the festivities and pageantry that accord with the season, most notable the Palio-the bareback horse race that consumes the social energies of the people of Siena for all of July and August.

Dario also intersperses an account of his own life and times-that of a transplanted British "little lord" who learns to love the wilds of Chianti; of his discovery and adoption of abandoned peasant farmhouses; of his apprenticeship in the wine industry; and of his arduous transformation from bohemian layabout to thriving Tuscan guide.

But the bulk of the book is devoted, with humor and affection, to the Americans he has met-the vain, the silly, the ignorant, the ambitious, the horny, the condescending, the charming, and the outright pathological. Some of them have made his life hell and live in his nightmares; others became lifelong friends.

I have been doing a lot of reading, in anticipation of a trip to Italy later this year, and this book is the best I have read so far. I do not believe Dario is whining about American tourists. Rather, I think he is saying, I didn't believe this when it happened, and I just have to share it with someone. Let's face it, tourists can be boors, and I am just about willing to believe that American tourists are among the most boorish. Reading about these boors and laughing at them is far more entertaining than having to suffer them in person. I fully believe that Dario always acted like a gentleman while leading the tours. He is proud of his country and wanted to provide a special touring experience, i.e., small groups getting his personal views. He talks about his struggles to get established, and shares very personal and precious insights into Italian culture and history. I am so excited that he has a new book coming out. I enjoyed this one thoroughly.

                                3 out of 5 stars A bit too much..........2007-04-30

I agree with some of the reviewers that this book is a bit insulting to Americans, however to give the author credit, he does tell stories of Americans he has become fond of, even lifelong friends with.
And that's pretty much what this book is - a bunch of stories. Some better than others. I think Mr. Castagno may have actually created some fictional characters to make the story interesting. Or at least embellished on a few things.

For example, the story about the 40ish year old lawyer, Chet, who is travelling with his father and his step-mother (or his father's "trophy wife") who is in her 20's. The author talks about how she treats Chet like a baby "tucking in his napkin" and "cutting his meat for him". Also when Chet shows the author an "ancient coin" that he bought from a street vendor in Rome (with the date 42 B.C. on it) the author is applalled that Chet actually thinks it is authentic. I mean - come on!! I find this story a little hard to believe. This Chet is an attorney!

There are some more interesting stories and I'm sure some of the American ignorance is true (ex. the lady who thought "Circa" was a Renaissance painter, and the woman who had no idea who the Etruscans were), but I thought the book would be funnier. The part about the history of the Palio was informative. The remainder just cosi cosi.

Too Much Tuscan Sun ! Certainly the author has suffered this fate.....the result being a book that should be titled Too Much Tuscan Whining. For 268 pages we are subjected to month by month account how Dario, a tour guide by profession, was inconvenienced, irritated and annoyed by his paying clients. I have read many travel books and until now I have found something enjoyable in each. NOT THIS ONE. It is like spending days with one of those people that talks only about themselves and if they mention anyone else it is only in a negative context to further point out their superiority. Chinese water torture. It is beyond me how an intelligent person could find humor in repeated stories of the number of Diet Cokes his clients drink or the walking speed of elderly seniors (ha ha ha so funny, especially the sixth time he belabors the point!). The writer is a tour guide. One would expect in years of leading tours he could write a book that would be very funny or at the least a bit interesting............NO, boring, rude complaints, no humor, very little information of interest about Tuscany. The only redeeming feature of this book is the warning it provides to people seeking a tour guide in Tuscany............avoid Dario Castagno

4 out of 5 stars Too Much Tuscan Sun review.......2007-03-11

This is a fun read, especially after one has returned from Tuscany, and especially if one has used the services of any local guide. Anyone who's done any amount of travel, whether with a group or independently, in Italy or elsewhere, will recognize some of the Americans the author describes. Sad to say, the "ugly American" still exists, and this books makes it OK to laugh at them. They are laughable. It's hard to believe they don't see themselves in that light. The only drawback I had was that, during the author's lengthy description of the palio in Siena, he launches into a political screed, which I found totally unnecessary and a bit gratuitous. He could've completed his description without a word of politics. Other than that, and putting that aside, this is a thorougly enjoyable and easy read.
