A Piece of Junk!.......2005-08-12
First, I rarely rate books since I don't have that much time on my hand. But I must do so this time since this book is so bad that not only should I get a refund, I should get paid for the time I wasted to read it!
The Title of the book is and Trading Decisions. I brought this book based on the title when it first came out since there were no user ratings yet. It is the worst TA or Systems book out of the 10 or so that I have. The information provided is so vague that probably anyone who uses TAs to trade and has a college degree can write a more informed book. DO NOT BUY this book until you have actually seen it yourself in a book store. Once you do, try to really read it for at least 10 minutes and you will see for yourself how much jiberish there is in it. For example, he has a chapter in Exits and "explained" it in just 5-6 pages, with no technical ideas behind any of it. The whole book only has around 10 formulas or so.. for a book that is titled Pattern Recognition! (Oh, and in case you are still wondering, there's is not a single "real" Pattern Recognition information in the book whatsoever.
For real Pattern Recognition & Trading Decisions, look for New Trading Sys and Methods - Perry Kaufman , and Professional Stock Trading: System Design - Conway. Even those books contain tradestation codes you may not find useful, the rest of the information provided is worth every penny of it.
Putting different investing techniques together.......2004-12-14
I have read about fundamental analysis, I have read about technical analysis, and so on - but this is the first book to put it all together in a way that makes sense for the non-specialist investor. OK, it is quite mathematical, but with backing from people such as Martin Pring and Merrill Lynch's Dan Kapetinakis, it is certainly worth the effort. The Author's Notes on the web-site at www.tfl.biz give some indication of how the book is structured, which also helps.
Horrible.......2004-11-01
First, the book is mistitled. Why is a chapter of the book devoted to "Introductory Fundamental Analysis"? Unfortunately, the contents are a hodgepodge of misleading and sometimes laughable technical analysis. For example, on page 161 in the middle of the book, the author states "In an established uptrend, short-term moving averages are above long term." This is a prime example of a shockingly dumb observation, and you're already halfway through the book! The book has no coherence with brief forays into Elliott Wave, linear regression, etc. -- all ultimately unenlightening.
Here's another example of absurdity regarding a trader's portfolio. "If you are happy to rely on the ad hoc diversity that is likely to accrue anyway from having a portfolio and wish to use strategies based on "feel," then judgments about the content of a portfolio may not involve calculations." Anyone know how to program a strategy based on "feel"?
The flowchart on page 324 starts with "Trawl: look for criteria of interest; ensure that minimum acceptable criteria are satisfied. If so, continue down the flow chart." Next step: "Can the instrument be exploited for an adequate profit?" Next step: "Yes". Thanks Sherlock.
Patterns, phases and profits.......2004-10-29
The instant we began classifying seemingly random events into recurring configurations we discovered patterns; that day our simian ancestors gained an incontestable advantage over other species. Later, the ability to detect patterns was so vital to our survival that it became an innate evolutionary skill. Using these skills in the markets can make you loose your shirt. And even with proper training-one of the objectives of Dr. Satchwell's book-recognizing valid patterns is still a matter of understanding probabilities.
There are a few classic studies (Working's and Slutzky's in the 1930s, and Robert's in 1959) that play havoc with our supposed chart-pattern recognition abilities. Essentially, these statisticians plotted randomly generated data on graph paper. They then showed the charts to technical analysts who quickly started seeing rounded bottoms, symmetrical triangles, head-and-shoulder tops, and similar designs.
Dr. Satchwell's book helps us distinguish between a possible chart pattern and a probable configuration; between a fake and a potential trade.
But the book does much more than that because it provides tools that will help us define the phases of the market. On a given day the market will behave like a manic-depressive and offer you dollars for fifty cents; another day, in an orgy of euphoria, the opposite will be true. Then, it will turn around and behave randomly, with the senseless Brownian motion exquisitely described by Bachelier, Fama, Samuelson, et al. A bit later, the market will show persistence and develop unimaginably long trends. And then, for no reason whatsoever, it will trace a Mandelbrot fractal and take us to the very onset of chaos. And just when you thought that you had it licked, it will start to behave like a mean-reversion machine-with a shifty mean, of course.
Bayesian analysis, Cobweb theory, Regularization, Non-linear forecasting, and Trend2Noise, among others, are brilliant tools that can be used to define the ever-changing phases of the market. I am a professional money manager with a solid, long-term track record. I have finished reading the book, now I have to study it.

Book Description
Fuelwood, agricultural residues, animal waste, charcoal, and other derived fuels, referred to as biomass energy, currently account for about 14% of world energy consumption. Biomass is the main source of energy for many developing countries and most of it is non-commercial. Hence there is enormous difficulty in collecting reliable biomass energy data. Yet good data are essential for analysing tendencies and consumption patterns, for modelling future trends and for designing coherent strategies. Data on biomass energy use and production are also needed to evaluate whether its use enhances or damages the environment, and to measure its effect on global emissions of carbon dioxide. This IEA workshop, held in Paris on 23-24 March 1998, focused on the work done by the IEA and other organisations to understand better the transition from non-commercial to commercial energy forms. Special attention was dedicated to the statistical and modelling aspects of the subject. It brought together some 50 biomass energy experts from international and non-governmental organisations, governments, universities and private industry. The presentations in these proceedings provide an extensive, up-to-date overview of the current knowledge and analysis on biomass energy.

Book Description
This book provides a critical overview of the state-of-the-art in biological systematics, and presents a broad perspective of the subject covering its history, theory and practice. The most important current theoretical issues are reviewed, with the emphasis on the species concept, the methodology of phylogenetic reconstruction and contrasting views on the relationships between phylogenetics and systematics. The book concludes with a review of the current state of taxonomy of the main groups, and a discussion of evolutionary patterns.
Book Description
The book deals with push moraines on Spitsbergen. The main body is a translation of the original German report by Karl Gripp on a 1927 expedition. The quality of Gripp's work is evaluated to see whether it stands the test of time. It is found that it is very modern, every year people still go into the field with the same research questions. It is also found that most likely Gripp's report contains the first description of features that we now take for granted, for instance the description of looped moraines to detect surges. Push moraines are still being studied and to show where we stand now two papers have been added that analyse two particular examples, Holmströmbreen and Sefströmbreen. The two examples are geographically close together, but reflect two completely different settings: terrestrial Holmströmbreen and tidewater Sefströmbreen.
Since a few years we know of the De Geer Archive, a collection of glass negatives of Spitsbergen, relating to De Geer's expeditions between 1882 and 1910. The negatives have only emerged recently and a collection of prints relating to Holmströmbreen and Sefströmbreen is included here. Together with a third paper incorporated in the book, this time an evaluation of De Geer's photos and maps of the Sefströmbreen surge, this material shows the importance of incorporating historical documentation in our studies.

Book Description
It is now more than sixty years since radar began in Britain. In the intervening years, airborne radar has become one of the most important branches of civilian and military radar. In Radar Days, "the father of airborne radar," Dr. "Taffy" Bowen recounts his personal story of how the first airborne radars were built and brought into use in the Royal Air Force, and of the Tizard mission to the USA in 1940, of which he was a member. Written from the point of view of the individuals who worked at the laboratory bench, the story begins with the building of the first ground air-warning radar at Orfordness in June 1935. The book proceeds to describe how this equipment was miniaturized to make it suitable for use in aircraft and the lengthy, sometimes hazardous flight trials conducted before radar went into service with the RAF. The author also details the activities of the Tizard mission, which was instrumental in installing the first airborne radars in US aircraft. The greatest achievement of the mission was to pass on the secret of the resonant magnetron to the US only a few months after its invention at Birmingham University. This was the device that brought about a revolution in Allied radar, putting it far ahead of the corresponding German technology for the remainder of the war.

Here's something different: a vampire novel that's light, funny, and not at all hackneyed. Between scenes of punks bowling frozen turkeys on the graveyard shift in a supermarket, or snapping turtles loose in a loft and gnawing on designer shoes, this novel has comic charm to spare. But it also packs an appealingly downbeat message about the consumer culture: Becoming a vampire has given the twentysomething heroine "a crampless case of rattlesnake PMS"--a grumpy mood in which she realizes that she can dress to the nines as a "Donner Party Barbie" and still end up disillusioned and unhappy, just another slacker doing her own laundry and watching sucky TV 'til the sun rises.
Book Description
Jody never asked to become a vampire. But when she wakes up under an alley Dumpster with a badly burned arm, an aching neck, superhuman strength, and a distinctly Nosferatuan thirst, she realizes the decision has been made for her.
Making the transition from the nine-to-five grind to an eternity of nocturnal prowlings is going to take some doing, however, and that's where C. Thomas Flood fits in. A would-be Kerouac from Incontinence, Indiana, Tommy (to his friends) is biding his time night-clerking and frozen-turkey bowling in a San Francisco Safeway. But all that changes when a beautiful undead redhead walks through the door ... and proceeds to rock Tommy's life -- and afterlife -- in ways he never imagined possible.

Something Anyone Would Enjoy.......2007-10-06
Whether you're a connoisseur of vampire books or a virgin to the sub genre, this book will tickle fancies you weren't even aware you had. It's an odd little book with more humor than romance and more quirk than horror, but this should please even the pickiest of readers. I only do a bullet review ever blue moon (and I've yet to see a blue moon, mind you), but I feel one coming on. Let me break it down...
THE WRITING: Christopher Moore starts of "Bloodsucking Fiends" in the midst of some very odd happenings. The first scene is centered around a bizarre character who isn't introduced at all; it might seem a bit jarring at first to not understand what this character really is about, but things become very clear if you just stick it out a few pages. You'll be glad you did, because the prose flows liquidly across the pages like its coming straight from the neck of a vamp-victim.
THE HUMOR: Strange situations centered around strange characters. There's a relatable writer, a Kung Fu dude, a bum/Emperor, more than one vamp, a tough-guy gay cop, a not-so-tough-guy straight cop, a necrophiliac (thankfully his scene is short), immigrants who want to marry a man for citizenship, and a couple of guys who will bronze anything. Sounds like a recipe for campiness, sure, but the thing is this; it all makes sense within the story. And when that harmony of humor and believability happens, the end result is very, very good.
THE MYTHOLOGY: Not touched on very much, but interesting and different from what most modern vampire series show. Some things that were introduced as major factories in the mystery were left unexplained (why one victim was reduced to dust but the rest weren't), but overall, Moore had a great handle on his version of the vampire mythology.
THE PLOT: The plot was well-planned and the set-up was great, though the climax and the ending came off a bit rushed. Everything is wrapped up rather quickly, making me feel like I missed a little something. However, that's okay, because there is a sequel (You Suck: A Love Story) and, if it's anywhere near as good as "Bloodsucking Fiends," then I'm on board.
8/10
If Carl Hiaasen or Bill Fitzhugh wrote a vampire novel this would be it!.......2007-09-19
This is another very enjoyable hilarious mild horror adventure that once finished will have you looking for everything else Christopher Moore has ever published. Bloodsucking Fiends is his third novel and easily one of his best. This book was written back in 1995 and has proved so popular he has recently written a second vampire adventure with some of these characters You Suck.
If you like the surreal eccentric character comedy novels also check out the authors Bill Fitzhugh (Pest Control's a great place to start), Carl Hiassen (Stormy Weather's as good as any other), Dave Barry (Tricky Business) and Max Barry (Syrup). If classic horror vampire tales are more your thing you can't go wrong with I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.
In Bloodsucking Fiends Jody is your average woman in her mid twenties, she lives in San Francisco, has a mother who's very disappointed in her life, a deadbeat boyfriend and a 9 to 5 job. Her life suddenly gets (or more accurately ends) a lot more exciting when she wakes up under a dumpster with a burnt hand after being attacked on the way home from work. She quickly works out she's a vampire and cannot venture outside in the day so will need a partner to get her car out of impound, find her an apartment and do a heap of other things you can't do at night. This is where yet to be successful write Tommy C Flood comes into play.
Tommy's recently moved to SF from Indiana and is having problems adjusting. He lives in a dorm room with a heap of Chinese guys named Wong. Mysteriously he keeps finding flowers on his bed which is weird considering he hasn't even encountered that many women let along interacted enough to get a secret admirer. A kind homeless man known by everyone as The Emperor tells him of a job as a night stacker manager going at the local supermarket, which turns out to be true and his. There he meets his fellow employees who are known as the animals. Along with unloading trucks they spend the nights skiing behind floor cleaners, bowling with frozen turkeys and other stuff day staff and customers don't know about. This is also where he will meet Jody who is about to make his life a lot more exciting and complicated! Fans of Moore's first novel Practical Demonkeeping will be pleased to know that homicide police officer Rivera has also moved to San Francisco and is one the case of a serial killer who is somehow draining pretty much all the blood from the bodies of the victims.
Humor...with Bite.......2007-09-05
If other vampire yarns are getting too melodramatic for you, or you just want to relax and read something that'll make you laugh out loud, you can't go wrong with this superlative novel about life after undeath.
What FUN.......2007-08-21
My first Christopher Moore novel BLOODSUCKING FIENDS: A LOVE STORY delights, enthralls, and heartily amuses in tearful fits of laughter, all in the context of a vampire love story spun into a hysterical parody. BLOODSUCKING FIENDS sucks you right in, and even during the slower mid-to-late portions of the novel, I couldn't put the book down. I absolutely loved the contemporary western prose replete with references to American movies, writers and products, I was enchanted by all of the characters, I enjoyed the San Francisco backdrop, and I was charmed by the love story itself. Nothing special in the plot, Christopher Moore writes to his strengths: absolutely relentless humor and a satirical parody of sorts. This book had me laughing out loud at various places as Moore relentlessly packs every paragraph with his offbeat, quirky humor. The book contains adult language and at times some violence (thought nothing too bad).
Reading Christopher Moore was like being a kid in a candy store.
The Story.
BLOODSUCKING FIENDS features 26 year-old, "cute-but-not-beautiful," green-eyed, red-haired, Transamerica employee Jody Stroud breaking free from her shell of insecurities and fears. Jody can't seem to live without a man in her life and attracts the worst kind of handsome, hunky jerks who exploit her sweet, passive nature. She's lived with so many guys over the years, she's lost count.
As the story begins, Jody is meekly walking home to her latest, hunky jerk of a boyfriend, Kurt. After she's suddenly attacked in a dark San Francisco alley, she wakes up the night after with heightened senses, a bunch of money and a wry retaliatory disposition, the vampire predator in her finally fighting back. Jody rebels, she rebels against people walking all over her, she rebels against her jerk of a boyfriend and knocks him out to suck some blood, and her survival instincts kick in as she seeks dark shelter from sunup to sundown. We're treated to the fun superhuman intricacies that go along with learning to cope with your new Vampire-self. Jody kicks some serious butt and the book rises above the hangover a lot romance novels have over insecurities in appearance. But then again, this isn't exactly a romance novel as much as it is Christopher Moore's hilarious parody on vampire love.
"[Jody] thought, There must be a hundred thousand dollars here. A man attacked me, choked me, bit my neck, burned my hand, then stuffed my shirt full of money and put a dumpster on me and now I can see heat and hear fog. I've won Satan's lottery."
Meanwhile, C. Thomas Flood's family and friends ostracized him from his home in Indiana for trying to make it as a writer and being a bit on the sensitive side. Tommy doesn't exactly fit in with stereotypical hickville consisting of bowling, beer and rampant sex. After his car burns down from the drive to San Francisco, Tommy now needs a place to stay and a job to support his potential writing career. A comical, older homeless man known as "The Emperor of San Francisco" suggests a Safeway store for Tommy's job. By the way, the Emperor and his dogs, Bummer and Lazarus that he affectionately refers to as his "troops," are in some ways the heart of the novel. The Emperor rocks!
Tommy meets Jody meet and things progress. Despite growing closer intimately, both still feel lonely since they're not like each other (one's a vampire, the other a human), and a younger Tommy constantly laments, "You're going to break my heart, aren't you." Jody answers, "Irreparably."
Jody and Tommy experiment over the fact vs. fiction of vampire culture. The exchanges are funny and I thought Moore handled the interchanges between a younger Tommy and an older Jody well. Since he's younger, Tommy does get a bit whiny at times, but he never manages to lose his sense of humor. It's a tumultuous relationship but a funny one nonetheless and Moore gets guys right: horny, sex-crazed beings of lust that can show tremendous love. Thankfully, Moore avoids the endless lovesick introspection romance novelists force upon their heroes' thoughts for their heroines and yet BLOODSUCKING FIENDS: A LOVE STORY still captures our hero Tommy's emotional affection for Jody.
Intermingled with this romance, Moore weaves the growing concern over the mysterious deaths of terminally ill people. Our homicide detectives investigating the deaths, the gay-but-rough Cavuto and the serene Cuban/Mexican/Colombian Rivera, make for an intriguing pair in their own right. The older vampire who initially turned Jody seems to be at large, and Jody and Tommy suspect the older vampire. It's funny, some of the interchanges between a feisty Jody and the laughing, older Vampire reminded me of the myriad of hero-and-heroine interactions from romance novels. The hundreds year-old vampire is darker and more mysterious than Tommy and that darker, mysterious quality fits the romance-hero mold much more so than our humble, skinny writer-boy Tommy.
In many ways, Jody and Tommy represent Moore's iconoclast figures in love stories.
Tommy interrupted, "Actually, there's only one body in the freezer. The other is my girlfriend."
"You sick [!#@]." Cavuto drew back as if to hit Tommy.
BLOODSUCKING FIENDS: A LOVE STORY had me in a constant state of laughing, chuckling, smiling and anticipating fervor. Good book, the love story itself may not work for some, but I enjoyed that aspect as well.
Vampire book..........2007-08-08
This was my first book of Christopher Moore's and it won't be my last! His humor is wonderful and adds more than a little flair to the book. I can't wait to read the next one!
